FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Israel intercepts Gaza blockade runners: 14 dead.

The Israelis are very, very serious about maintaining said blockade:

At least 14 people were killed and 50 were injured early Monday as the Israeli Navy took over the ships taking part in the aid sail to Gaza, Arab and Turkish media reported.

The IDF reported that four soldiers were injured during the takeover from live ammunition and knife stabbing. One of the troops was said to be in serious condition and three in light to moderate condition. The injured were evacuated to the Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer by helicopter.

According to an IDF source, “The sail’s participants were not innocent and used violence against the soldiers. They were waiting for the forces’ arrival.”

See also: Liberty Pundits, Israpundit, the New York Times, Hot Air Headlines, The Other McCain, and Pajamas Media.  It’s early in the morning for me and I’m only up because the eldest kid had bad dreams – as will I, once I go back to sleep – so I’ll add only this: violent resistance to a military seizure of your vessel will lead to violence in return, and PR disaster or no the IDF acted as a professional military force following the civilian policy of two sovereign governments (Egypt’s also maintaining the blockade).  But this is all the excuse that an Israel-hater needs to break diplomatic relations with that country.

Which means that we’re about to find out the true extent of this administration’s supposed antipathy to Israel.

The IDF was met with small arms fire upon boarding the ships… who ignored REPEATED warnings to port at Tel Aviv.

Hard to imagine what the Gaza activists were thinking, firing their pea-shooters at Israeli commandos armed to the teeth… thus the lopsided result.

And the IDF says it was a highly orchestrated ambush, too…

seemed to say that the soliers were shot at with their own hand guns. Guns taken from the first to repel in from helicopters which were met with clubs and knives.
I support what the Israelis did here, but we need to watch how this gets reported. The people on the ships were clearly aggressors, but it does not seem like they were equiped with their own firearms.
Words like “…highly orchestrated ambush…” or refering to the incident as an assault on a relief mission are just intended to inflame emotions, and neither seems to really define what happened.

Before reading your post, I thought “well, if Obama has been waiting for an excuse to walk away from Isreal, this is it.” Then I read your last paragraph (that’s what I’m confessing, I have a bad habit of doing that to see if I want to read the whole thing, bad, bad, bad). in trying to appease Europeans and others on this matter.

They should just invade the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the rest of the territory and just take it over. They should just kick the Palestinians out and tell them to find another place to go. Period.

Actually, I think that the entire Middle East region should belong to Israel, it would be a heck of a lot easier than dealing with countries like Saudi Arabia.

It probably isn’t a good idea for Israel to threaten Turkey. For a Muslim country Turkey has been relatively sympathetic to and supportive of Israel. Israel needs more friends than just the US, and lord knows it has plenty of enemies. Turkey can play a positive role in moderating Middle East attitudes towards Israel.

Rub the noses of all the idiots/enemies condemning them for taking the blockade runners in any evidence found that contradicts the claims against Israel. (starting with the video about the takeover)

if both parties do not desire it. Problem with your assessment is that Turkey, and other countries, play peace maker in front of the world camera, yet supply arms, training, men, etc for those trying to destroy Israel. There is undeniable proof that Turkey has been a start point for weapons and other such things that head into Palestine and into the hand of the Israeli enemies.

And Israel needs less friend like the US. They have been one of our best allies in the last 20 years and look how we ( not everyone just a country as a whole) are treating them now.

There will never be peace in that region, it is impossible. The two years I spent there, I saw more than one peace agreement broken by rockets coming from Palestine and human suicide bombers. And even then Israel showed constraint. The muslim people despise the Jews in a way we can never understand. They believe that no Jew should be left alive, period. They will never honor any treaty and will, till the day our good Lord returns, be an enemy of Israel.

Israel knows very well how to remain as safe as possible and how to keep their country intact. They also have one of the best, if not the best, intelligence groups in the world. They know who is aiding their enemies and who is not. When they attack, they do so for a reason and with all the needed proof.

But I would bet everything I have, if it has not started already, the leftist in this country and those in this country who hate Israel, will use this video, twist its pictures, and claim what we are seeing is those “poor souls” defending against Israeli aggression. Israel and its people were the beginning of it all, and when the world turns against them, the end will start there too.

  • commenter

let’s get this straight: Israel armed forces boarded a Turkish ship in international waters, 40 miles outside of Israel’s borders. Leave the aftermath alone for the moment — the simple act of boarding a vessel of a sovereign nation in international waters is an act of war.

Furthermore, Turkey is a NATO member, which is protected by articles 5 and 6 against an aggression. Article 6 clearly spells out “a vessel” and “the Mediterrenean”. So, Israel committed an act of war against a NATO ally! What should the US, UK, and the rest of the NATO members do?

My opinion: this is a terribly boneheaded move by IDF. They walked right into this PR trap — there was no way they would come out of this with any upside, and they managed to make the worst out a bad situation

My other opinion: i don’t know why IDF could not wait until the ships entered the Israeli waters (or Gaza waters)! This negates any legitimacy in their arguments about self defense: what are they defending 40 miles out?

Also, put yourself in the shoes of the ship’s crew and passengers (however loose the term passenger may be): what would you do if someone forcibly entered your house? your car? your ship? Israel has no jurisdiction over the waters or the ship, yet they land armed commandos from helicopters into a civilian ship! For all the bravado going on here, i don’t see anyone here welcoming an armed intruder into their personal space with open arms. So, any resistance by the ship’s crew and passengers is justified — IDF was too stupid not to wait until the ships entered its waters, and too violent to kill 16 people and injure over 50 (latest report i saw)

Now, Turkey is threatening to send more ships, this time protected by the Turkish navy! Mind you, this was the one country in the Middle East that actually had a positive relationship with Israel. “Nuke ‘em all!” type empty rhetoric may sound good and manly, but it not the solution to any problem, especially this one. And blind support of Israel regardless of the legitimacy, reasonableness, and justness of its actions will only prolong the Middle East problem

International waters are international waters. The Israeli military used to have a much lighter touch handling these events. And the Special Forces were both incredibly stealthy and patient.

I can’t believe that Israel’s sophisticated military and political elites could not have devised a plan in which (1) the flotilla was prevented from entering Israeli waters without injuries and deaths; and (2) an independent third-party offloaded the aid and delivered it to Gaza.

It certainly would have saved a lot of bad PR and a ticked off Turkey. Oh, and couple of dead people.

‘Activists’ sending at least one more ship.

Greta Berlin of the Free Gaza Movement, which organized the flotilla, said another cargo boat was off the coast of Italy en route to Gaza. A second boat carrying about three dozen passengers is expected to join it, Berlin said. She said the two boats would arrive in the region late this week or early next week.

Humanitarian organizations always have a leading spokesperson, the Flotilla has Greta Berlin. She wants to feed the hungry in Gaza, but not in North Korea. Her agenda is to destroy Capitalist Israel but not to disturb the dictatorship of Kim Jong 11. Expect Marxists and Jew haters to make Greta Berlin the worlds wealthiest humanitarian.

All the stuff on board can be documented and/or recovered by submersible equipment and/or divers.
The PR stuff has never done them any good anyway.
Any “escorts” will get sunk too, and if the nation they belong to wants to make an issue of it, they will find themselves at war with Israel, their territory soon to be transferred to new ownership.

Sinking the ships is a win-win for Israel.
