Hi, Larry Marchant! [UPDATED]

[UPDATE] Prove it, Larry. And no looking at Willy Folks’ test paper, either.

Bye, Larry Marchant!

[South Carolinian] Republican gubernatorial hopeful Andre Bauer said today he has asked for and received the resignation of a political consultant for “inappropriate conduct” but would say little more.

Lt. Gov. Bauer announced that adviser Larry Marchant gave him his resignation at noon today.

(Via CCP Blog)

Funny how things work out, huh?

And, Andre?

WE SEE YOU.

[UPDATE]: If you need more background, go here and start scrolling down.

the inappropriate conduct was, other than snozzling Will Folks.

The pieces are beginning to fit together.

This just keeps gettin’ gooder and gooder!

  • aesthete

tired of this non-story? We have out-of-control legislatures, skyrocketing deficits, attacks on our freedoms from all sides, a terrible HCR bill that should be scrapped, two wars… and this “he said, she said” story is what’s capturing the nation’s attention?

  • antisocial

I am wondering if AP from HA will post on this.

I have asked. And I will wait.

    Actions have consequences.

  • http://www.spartanburgteaparty.org karenmartin

This is actually an important story, at least in SC, because of the corruption exposed in the “good old boy” network, which is not just a cliched, cartoony, laughable joke, but a very real and dangerous cesspool of greed, power brokering, and extreme arrogance. The “he said/she said” component is the unfortunate vehicle through which the money … influence peddling … election dealing … and outright disgusting attacks have been exposed. But make no mistake … this is not merely a story about an alleged affair. Palmetto Politics

    http://palmstatepolitics.blogspot.com/

shows the big picture. and this is truly just the iceberg we are now able to see above the scummy water.

  • aesthete

In my case, that action was limited to an exaggerated eye roll and a shake of the head, but to each his own, I suppose.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

…people might actually not be aware that the just-fired Bauer staffer now making the second accusation of an affair is linked to the first accuser. Which lack of awareness would have a bad effect on the electoral chances of a candidate who we’ve been boosting for over a year.

If you don’t like us keeping an eye out for our favored candidates, by all means: don’t read those posts.

Assuming that there were some corrupt political network, geriatric males or no, it is of some political concern, and assuming that Folks had something to do with it, such a story would be relevant. If Andre or another politician is behind the hatchet job, then he should be out of the running for being unserious, peddling falsehood, and smearing a fellow Republican. My beef is more with the fact that this douchebag got so much initial play on multiple sites, and that the saga continues. So long as Nikki didn’t do anything illegal, I don’t see why an allegation of infidelity should have been a big deal, particularly when you consider the array of issues we’re facing as a nation (and which I’m sure SC is facing as a state). Nikki’s presumed infidelity, regardless of its veracity, doesn’t affect anyone in any way, nor does it add or detract from her exemplary record. Why is the affair, and whether it transpired or not, more important than her qualifications for the job she’s running for? (For the record, I highly doubt that it happened, but even if it had, wouldn’t make any difference to me.)

Presumably, what makes political networks so pernicious is not their personal sex life, but the very real damage they do to their states in the form of myopic and self-aggrandizing lawmaking, incompetent appointees, and a perversion of our democratic institutions.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Character counts, so this allegation counts if it’s true. That makes it a story.

But the accusers aren’t credible. That’s also a story.

  • aesthete

Folks’ masturbatory and self-aggrandizing musings on his “inappropriate physical relationship” with Haley would have floundered on some slashfic site where they belonged :)

I like Haley, too, just don’t see why her sex life (or lack thereof) is of interest any whichway. Seems to me that we play into our opponents’ strategy by loudly denying such non-sequiturs, in the same way that responding to claims of racism with, “my black friends” is ineffective. A cool denial in the same vein of Reagan’s reply as to whether he was a racist would do just fine, IMO. Let those who purvey such stories perish without receiving what they want: attention and relevance.

  • aesthete

I’ll refrain from commenting on such posts. Have a nice evening, Moe.

i part because of his marks as a stellar family man. Reagan was the first divorcee to be elected President. I’d argue that personal characteristics matter in the absence of a record of public service, but that having built up a record, it will be a surer predictor of future character in office than personal character. Indeed, our entire system is built up in such a manner: very few of us feel the need to ask our bankers, lawyers, etc. about their love lives, because their job performance is sufficient. Anyone who saw Obama’s public record could have easily predicted that he would be a radical liberal who would pursue policies damaging to America, but that he would also be ineffective. Lo and behold, those who read his book and saw his record as a legislator were right in their inferences, and those who babbled about hope and change, “family values”, and superficial and highly stylized details of his personal life were proved wrong in their beliefs. There’s a time and a place to use personal failings in evaluating a candidate, but this isn’t it.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

But fine, if you think that being immorality is irrelevant to political campaigns, think what you want.

But we care about more than just money at RedState, in general.

You know what the love of money is? Greed.

  • Good_Captain

Finds it more likely that Folks slept w/ Lindsay Graham than Nikki Haley? This has been nonsense from the the start but it does demonstrate that our battle is not just against Dems but rather it is against the political establishment in general. I can tolerate R political types (“pols”) more easily (in general) but the general fact of the matter is that a true Pol is generaly in it for themselves first and not the good of the state or th country.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

Even if he would be theoretically so inclined, surely everybody can agree that Senator Graham would have better standards.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

    Some think it’s the same.

  • aesthete

None of my posts have the word, “money” in them, and pecuniary interests are the least of my concerns, but thanks for the non-sequitur. At any rate, if you’re interested in labeling your own political beliefs in property rights and the gamut of small government issues (I’m assuming that we, and Nikki Haley, share a common belief in small government) as “greed”, I suppose you’re perfectly free to do so. I am concerned by the implication that you’d throw a perfectly good candidate to the wolves solely because of a personal failing. I’d like to know if you’d do the same with those who provide you with services on the free market.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

The idea that running a budget deficit makes a politician’s character irrelevant seems ridiculous to me.

  • http://www.reddogreport.com reddogreport

This story is just the gift that keeps on giving. Just as soon as you think the whole thing has died down, BOOM! another major political explosion.

The adulterer, in effect, has hit his/her spouse. Just because a state law wasn’t broken doesn’t make the act of adultery less vicious. That being said, these are only allegations. After all, John Edwards’ campaign aide claimed to be the father of Edward’s daughter.

  • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

And if was intended to imply Merchant’s allegation is true, Bauer’s in collusion with the rest of those cronies. Bauer needs to immediately clarify what he mean by Merchant’s “inappropriate conduct.” Is Bauer stating he believes Merchant’s allegation? Or, is the “inappropriate conduct” Merchant going to the press with this story.

Unless Bauer is just incredibly inarticulate, no one says the “inappropriate conduct” was going to the press, but rather the *act of adultery* is inappropriate. Sure, in the technical definition of the term, Going to the press just before the primary is inappropriate conduct, but it’s also a crass political act (regardless of whether the allegation is true). Bauer getting out in front of the news by asserting Merchant’s claim is true is likewise an incredibly crass political act.

  • JamesSmith130

and why I’m unable to trust any politician who cannot be faithful to their spouse. And I generally refuse to support them either, regardless of party. Adulterers should leave office immediately.

If I lived in Louisiana, I would abstain from the Senate race. Same thing in Nevada in 2012 if Ensign runs again.

  • Adjoran

But a commenter at Palmetto State really showed his ignorance by comparing these tactics to the late Lee Atwater. Atwater played hardball, not sleaze.

Bauer better watch it, or those pictures of him and Charlie Crist in that South Beach hot tub may come out next . . .

  • acat

I don’t know that I’ve seen Senator Graham having any standards at all, other than “put money in my g-string” …

But then, I don’t live there.

I’m not saying that he should be on anybody’s Christmas card list, but he’s clearing what’s turning out to be a pretty low freaking bar.

She would be the most reliable conservative vote in Congress. We hire these pols to do a relatively easy job of voting yea or nay on pretty easy choices. Graham has shown he can make something simple into something complicated on too many occasions. Folks is a clown that obviously wasn’t spanked enough as child and who needs his ass kicked now by a chivalrous South Carolinian, whether its true or not.

Haley is going to show the good ole boys the door with a splash of sweet tea.

  • acat

between Lindsay’s positions and those of John McCain.

While I *think* I agree with McCain on quite a few issues, it’s hard to tell some days. Also, McCain’s amazing ability to alienate fellow travelers and potential allies, to leave knives deep in the back of groups with long memories, and in general to make it all about himself instead of about conservatism or about the country.

In short, while McCain, and arguably Lindsay Graham can do some good in Congress, and at the end of the day I’d vote for either one over the Dem, they both have a demonstrated tendency to go their own way that I find .. concerning.

  • Adjoran

The little weasel . . . he was “forced” to come out with this, see – because he had “no idea Will Folks would make an issue of it” or that “Haley would be so defiant in denying it.”

Transparent little POS – how does HE know what the deal between Folks and Haley was? He couldn’t, of course.

His “proof”? That he and Haley were in Salt Lake City for the same conference, had dinner together and went to TWO – not one, mind you – bars also.

I saw the clip on the local Charleston news, but it was a feed from upstate somewhere, live just a few minutes ago. It’s not up on their website yet – http://www.live5news.com/ .

Watch it, and I doubt you’ll need to know much about this guy’s sorry sleazy history to know he is lying his butt off.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

Also: Salt Lake City has bars? …No, wait, they loosened up on that a while back.

  • Brian Hibbert

I don’t believe this guy would be fired if Erick hadn’t done it.

Now lets hope the backlash on the false accusation gives Nikki a 10 point boost!

  • http://www.reddogreport.com reddogreport

What’s the rest of it? How about where is the beginning of it? Show me something other than they went to the same conference together.

Folks’ Text and Phone records showed absolutely nothing, but at least he had them.

With all the lame rumors and innuendos out there, I am going to need pictures or DNA evidence before I believe any of these clowns.
