Alvin Greene (D CAND, SC-SEN) up on felony charge.

You know, South Carolinian political shenanigans are ever so much more fun when they’re not aimed at anybody on your side:

South Carolina’s surprise Democratic nominee to challenge U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint is facing a pending felony charge.

Court records show 32-year-old Alvin Greene was arrested in November and charged with showing obscene Internet photos to a University of South Carolina student. The felony charge carries up to five years in prison.

No, I don’t know why anybody would bother further ensuring DeMint’s re-election: this goes far beyond ‘belt-and-suspenders’ and well into ‘plate armor’ territory.  But, seriously: where did this guy come from, where did he get the money to run…  and why has all of this been done for this race?  Is this some form of bizarre political performance art?

PS: Yeah, I know: between Alexi Giannoulias’ bank loan problem, Charlie Crist’s best-buddy-up-on-fraud-charges problem, and Joe Sestak’s the administration-tried-to-bribe-me problem (not to mention Andrew Romanoff’s)… we’re one felony arrest away from it becoming a default assumption for opponents to 2010 GOP Senatorial candidates*.  Done any gunrunning lately, Robin Carnahan?

*Much like we assume income tax evasion for Obama administration officials.

    NOT!! :)

Because he’s black, he got 100% of the black vote, plus any white Democrats who were reluctant to support the establishment candidate, Vic Rawl, who was heavily favored to win.

It isn’t as if anyone would have a chance against DeMint anyway, but some white Democrats might have felt having a black statewide candidate would boost black turnout in the fall and help the down-ticket.

It’s unclear how Greene’s troubled past might affect that thinking.

by Ds who want to replace him on the ballot with another candidate handpicked by the SC D establishment.

This again sounds like the Chicago Way. Squid politics – to use Tom Roeser’s analogy of Chicago politics.

When I glanced at the blockquote what I saw was “…Sen. Jim DeMint is facing a felony charge”.

I nearly had a heart attack.

Wishful thinking on their part, probably.

Did he get offers for a job from WH?

is on Alvin Greene’s email buddy list?

Another African-American Democratic candidate, thrown under the bus. The Democrats of South Carolina chose this gentleman less than 24 hrs ago, and now the establishment wants him to go away!?!?

    Just sayin’.

Compared to many of the politicians in South Carolina, this guy is pretty clean.

It got me thinking though; unemployed, watches porn, has an arrest record…

    maybe he’s a blogger.

…but when I follow the link, the AP story doesn’t have that sentence. Must have been updated.

Either that, or combined it with another one.

Finding out how/why this happened will be a fascinating case study.

Even if this guy didn’t have any charges against him, that’s amazing that he won the Democrat nomination over a four-term state senator.

I hope this backfires on the Dems and I say that in case of African American turnout

Hopefully he is kicked off but it ticks off African Americans and more stay home in SC. This will help us defeat Spratt as his district is 1/3 African American

that I’ve heard is that his name was first on the ballot. Yahoo poses this as the work of a Republican operative paying his filing fee. This makes absolutely no sense, but then the whole Watergate thing was senseless since Nixon was headed for a sure win.

By the way, the charge as I read it is showiing pornographic pictures to a fellow USC student then asking for sex. That’s a felony???

God I get tired of trying to explain SC politics!

Here’s one study by Larry Sabato’s group.

I heard a great theory from a collegue that Rawl actually got Greene into the race so that his allowed contributions from individuals would be higher ($1,000 x 2 for a contested primary and general election I think?). Someone is going to subpoena his bank records and find out where that $10,000 filing fee came from, count on it.

I watched two interviews. Painful. He has trouble forming complete sentences.

to get him to leave the race :)

“Is this some form of bizarre political performance art?”

Why? Because his campaign manager is Andy Kaufman?
