Democrats suppressing GOP visits to Gulf.

(Via Instapundit) It’s the little things that underscore the pettiness that’s infesting the Democratic party’s leadership these days:

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) wanted to fly 10 lawmakers down to the Gulf of Mexico to see the damage caused by BP’s gigantic oil spill first hand.

House Democrats said no.

To summarize: House Members have funds that they can tap into to go back and forth from their districts; Rep Scalise wanted to tap into that in the process of organizing a visit of about 10 lawmakers to Louisiana to assess conditions in the Gulf before voting on drilling restrictions; the Democratic leadership has authorized using the funds in such a manner in the past; and they’re not doing it now, because they want to control access by filtering it via committee (and, oh, yes, the Democrats forgot to mention that last bit to the GOP ahead of time).

Now, if you’re a normal person, you might think that being able to tour the Gulf before voting on it is hardly unreasonable… particularly if you’ve already made the mistake of taking the Speaker’s own pet mouthpiece seriously.  In reaction to the fairly obvious observation that the Democrats are hampering Republican efforts to directly assess Obamaspill:

“Every Member should see the result of eight years of failed Bush-Cheney energy policies that have done nothing to secure our energy future,” said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill.

You get used to baldfaced, reflexive, and boneheaded mendacity if you live in the DC area for any length of time, but this. This is something special. There is negative semantic content in that statement: somewhere, it’s making an angel cry.

    1. Fly American Airlines and go.

    2. Hold a big press conference by an oil infested marshland.

    3. Talk about the federal response and how the feds aren’t helping.

    4. Be energized and involved!

  • hoootie

What in the hell does that have to do with the situation now ???? What a waste of protoplasm. I know her parents were standing in the shallow end of the gene pool. This woman needs serious psychiatric help. She’s about three french fries short of a happy meal. I can say this….Hell hath no fury like a Conservative scorned. You have been warned !

  • raoul_duke

… and let ‘em hold a nationally televised press conference while standing hip deep in contaminated marshland while they do some more apologizin’ to BP for being “shaken down”.

  • loupgarou1317

in a campaign ad!! Think, people THINK!!! This is a perfect thing to use on them……..they have handed us a PERFECT item to use IF we have the balls to USE IT!!

  • Crowe

If you had actually written out “apologizing” rather than the much more pointedly down-home “apologizin’” I would easily have ignored your point. But since you were sly with the apostrophe I was much more deeply affected. Thank you for being serious, yet folksy; deep, yet accessible. I think I’ll club fewer baby seals tomorrow for it.

Abbreviations are important. There’s no time to waste. Al Gore’s doomsday clock is tickin’.

    Boom!

It washes up on shore every day.
This will be one of those times when the the truth is so big and overwhelming that no dirty trick or media spin can conceal it.
Millions of people see it and live it every day.

The Obama administration has proven to be powerless and ineffective when it really counted.
    You cannot hide that fact.

neglecting their responsibilities to the people of this country if they did NOT take their rotting carcasses down to see the evidence for themselves.

It is the truth. They should be responsible enough to view the evidence before making a decision.

  • raoul_duke

… and I mean everyone, from the Federal Government to the Oil Industry to the best minds of the engineering world… all are “powerless & ineffective” against a flow of 60,000 + bpd of crude spewing from the bottom of the gulf for nearly 2 months now… and for how much longer?

No amount of hooverin’, no quantity of barriers and containment floaties is gonna be effective until someone figures out a way to stop the flow. Any expended cleanup effort prior to suspending the flow into the gulf is literally an exercise in pi@#ing in the wind.

So far, haven’t heard any great ideas on how to stop the mess comin’ from the House GOP leadership either.

    I’m just sayin’…

…either too dumb to stop mucking about with the recovery, and/or too scared to annoy their base (government agency workers) by doing so. It’s certainly not our fault that your party’s too petty to let anybody else fix their mistakes, too.

    Deal with it.

PS: Really, the apostrophes are just making you look vaguely silly.

  • gohogs

to fly his own butt down there. I have no sympathy left for these congress people.

…she appreciates your assistance in arguing that a sitting representative cannot expect to be reimbursed for doing due diligence on a bill when doing so might hinder a Democrat.

  • raoul_duke

… REAL recovery will begin, we can all only hope, once the flow is stopped & only then. There is NO WAY to clean up a mess that continually recharges itself on a daily basis to the tune of 60,000+ bpd. GOP leaders grandstanding in the midst of what futile efforts are being undertaken at the moment, just so they can vote to approve more off-shore drilling after having seen the devastation for themselves seems, pardon me, rather pointless unless they are going to be donning rubber gloves & plastic coveralls and working to help with the cleanup effort while they are there.

No apostrophes were harmed in the making of this response.

On Nov. 2 she’ll be shut up.

until the flow is stopped? If it is producing 60 or 60K bpd, you put enough skimmers out there to process what it is producing and keep it off the shoreline. Of course, if you’re a communist owned by labor unions and generally a faculty lounge expert, you can’t make decisions and you certainly can’t do anything that your union and envirocommie friends don’t like, so you aren’t going to use readily available resources. Besides, all those Crackers down there vote Republican and the Blacks will vote Democrat no matter how stupid it is to do so, so Comrade Obama thinks it is a safe play.

People like me are going to have to extirpate idiots like you so that we never have another Comrade Obama as President of this once great Country again.

This one would have been a bipartisan group of 10 to visit a rig in the Gulf.

    Nancy said “no”.

Except that this happened last year.

    So at least she’s consistent.

Didn’t want her folks learning anything before the accident.

Doesn’t want her folks learning anything after the accident.

Just stay in D.C. & hold hearings.

    These people are pathetic.

Failure to recognize that early on was Obama’s biggest f’up so far.

Instead, he defaulted to his lawyerly training and focused on the blame game. He defaulted to his community organizer (Alinsky-trained rabble rouser) experience and began demonizing BP.

Only there was never any real dispute that BP, as operator of the well, was ultimately responsible, and they said early on they would pay.

It was also obvious early on that Obama was making a strategic mistake by threatening and alienating the only people who could realistically do anything about the well.

Just like when Congress wrote the rules of engagement in Vietnam, it’s a big mistake to inject politics into what should be tactical & technical decisions best left to experts.

    This guy’s a leader like I’m a prima ballerina.

  • Jack_Savage

So unless one is going to the Gulf to help clean up, they should not be allowed to travel there and have no input whatsoever, even though they are elected legislators who have a vested interest in the matter on behalf of their constituents? And who would be “grandstanding” by not letting them go? This shallow, worthless, POS Dem leadership – from Barry on down.

I’m sure MSNBC will run with this one.

The next time the dems want to grandstand on an issue using government travel the R’s should remind them of this and deny it or beat them over the head with the dem’s abuse of fed funds…

Go anyways! Wealthy adult (technically) congresscritters can afford this out of their pocket change… if they just have to have it on the taxpayer dime then mebbe they shouldn’t be in congress…
