Meet Ed Martin (R CAND, MO-03).

Ed is running against Russ “Yes, he really does look like that” Carnahan, who is mostly known (publicly) for his last name and (privately) for his growing disinterest in keeping the job.  I’m not being cute, here: I’ve heard from several different Missouri political types that Russ Carnahan doesn’t even really want to be a Congressman anymore… which is kind of fortuitous, because Ed Martin doesn’t want Russ Carnahan to be a Congressman anymore, either.  Ed and I spoke this morning:

    I’m not sure which is worse: career politicians, or the political aristocracy.

    I’m sure Russ Carnahan is a nice guy, but he needs to find a real job outside of the family business, after three terms in The House.

    Here’s the genealogy:

    John Russell Carnahan … is the son of the late Mel Carnahan, the former Governor of Missouri and posthumous U.S. Senator-elect, and Jean Carnahan who was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat to which her husband was posthumously elected. His grandfather, A.S.J. Carnahan, served in Congress for seven terms, and also as U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone.

    Sister Robin is Missouri’s Secretary of State, and running as the Democrat Candidate for Senator. Family business.

    Republicans lost to a dead Calahan in 2000, and another dead Democrat (Patsy Mink – HA) in 2002. Party history is not so good.

    Fortunately, Russ and Robin Carnahan are lively Democrats … I hope Ed Martin and Roy Blunt do well against a prince and princess. A few commitments to cease spending would help, as well.
