Reid’s Pet (D CAND, DE-SEN) broke promise, raised taxes.

Via The Other McCain and The Tech Guy we see this helpful reminder; as New Castle County’s head official Democratic Senatorial candidate Chris Coons managed to somehow turn an inherited surplus and a firm no-tax pledge into multiple violations of said pledge and Delaware’s most populous county headed towards bankruptcy (by his own admission).  And Coons had to preemptively address the tax issue, which is politician for “Man, but did I screw that one up!”

No wonder Reid loves him.

Christine O’Donnell for Senate.

Moe Lane

PS: You know, there’s been a lot of netroots sniggering lately at Christine O’Donnell’s social views, which apparently include her disapproval of what is apparently one the Left-blogosphere’s favorite activities.  Fine, if they wish to pleasure themselves this way it’s… sadly typical, really, but their right.  But here’s the thing: a Senator O’Donnell’s views on the state of your libido will not actually matter, in your private life; a Senator Coons’ views on the state of your wallet actually would.

Oh, I’m sorry: did that kill the mood for you?

The best thing about this story is that after raising taxes 3 times in 4 years, Chris Coons is trying to convince voters that he is a “Fiscal Conservative” and that his views are going to cause some tension between himself and the tax and spend liberals in the Senate.

    It’s absolutely laughable!

Christine O’Donnell has the perfect candidate to run against. She’s going to win this race!

that Christine can’t win. She needs only convince an additional 1/16th of the total voters to support her at the ballot box, and she defeats Coons. As Reid and Coons keep providing more ammunition, it will just get more likely. This race is not a foregone conclusion.

“bearded marxist’ in college. ‘Nuff said.
When he loses he can always take Van Jones’ position in the administration, they are a marxist short.

legned is an old political story from here in TN. When Estes Kefauver ran for the US senate in 1948 he was attacked by Memphis’s Boss Crump. Crump took out a series of newspaper ads (remember them) attacking Estes K. as being a thief in the night like the “Coon”. The Coon prowls at night and will often stare at you as it continues to go about its business. So Estes K. was really crooked -in Boss Crump eyes-as he would look you in the eyes and pick your pockets.

Kefauver was not amused by these charges and came up with the famous retort”I may be a big Coon but I ain’t Boss Crump’s pet coon”. That was a huge crowd pleaser and to highlight the retort Kefauver started to travel with a caged coon that he brought to the stage during every speech. Caged Coons can be unpleasant so Kefauver switched to a Coon skin cap-ala Davy Crockett like. This was in 1948 and the retelling of the Coon skin story drove him to the US senate. Later on in the 1950′s the Davy Crockett Disney movie spurred on many Coon skin cap mania.

The trend now is for legislator to be lawyers.
    Why is that?
They almost uniformly admit to not reading or being able to comprehend the bills that are written.
So what does that leave them with?
Being able to distingush the will of the people who voted them into office and vote accordingly.
Seems to me the voters have the harder job of researching the candidates and deciding which one will adhere to the will of the people and unless Sen. Reid is your ideal then his pet Coons couldn’t be either.

I don’t know anything about Delaware politics, but I can see the political narrative now shaping up for the Coons vs O’Donnell election as the bearded Marxist in college versus the anti-masturbation witchcraft dabbler.

    Let the goof-a-thon begin!

The good news is that everyone including the Democrats was certain Castle was a shoo-in, so their strongest challengers didn’t bother running and left the nomination to Coons, a failed county administrator of limited experience himself. Not that Delaware Democrats have such a strong bench – witness Biden and Carper as their top stars – but Coons is certainly almost the weakest they could have nominated for the seat.

The bad news is that it is still Delaware, and may be well behind the national conservative trend.

The race is winnable, but O’Donnell is still a heavy underdog. We need Castle to step up and endorse – that would cut some of the gap, which I believe reflects many Castle supporters bitter about the rough primary. After that, the trick would be to get her enough resources to win without diverting money from races where we are better placed to take a seat.

this state has some of the lowest overall taxation in the nation. There is a reason so many companies are incorporated in Delaware. Delaware is also strong on Second Amendment rights. And as Joe Biden said proudly, “it used to be a slave state” lol.

Delaware have very conservative corporate law precedent. Coupled with no state business income tax, it was the place to be. Delaware has what are considered to be top notch bankruptcy judges and state court judges that hear businesses cases. Delaware does not have a huge city in it (fewer than 1M people in the entire state), so they don’t have the urban problems requiring the tax dollars to deal with.

There are a bunch of Delaware copycat states out there now. For example, Nevada actively markets itself as a copycat state. A Nevada judge will look to Delaware case law on a corporate law issue.

You are right that Delaware is no SF (and its even no Vermon or Conn either) but don’t make too much of all the Delaware corporations—-that is simply a golden goose that people were smart enough not to kill. Its living off the decisions and reputation of people long since dead.

The media will bury this kind of stuff for Coons.

It will literally take Coons killing a baby with his bare hands on live television between now and election day in order for Christine to win. As a matter of fact, it would probably have to be a cute baby. I don’t think an ugly baby would do.
