Left freaks out over Moe Tucker.

For those who don’t know – and come, I will conceal nothing from you; until five minutes ago, this included me* – Ms. Tucker was a drummer for the Velvet Underground, which for a certain segment of the population makes her instantly cooler than squeezable bacon. Well, in April of 2009 a ‘Maureen Tucker’ showed up at a Georgia Tea Party:

…and Instapundit, Reason, and I are all entertained to discover that this is freaking out people, now that that the story’s out (a year and a half later). They are actually depressed and in denial at the thought that an older lady and mother who once played the drums for a band they liked might be upset that the economy’s in free fall; searching Google blogs for “moe tucker” should be good for at least a half hour of entertainment. That is, if you’re the sort who would enjoy watching random people from the Other Side go through an episode of existential dread and mild terror at the thought that one of their icons is one of… one of… one of THEM.

No, it’s not exactly cognitive dissonance; this is more the activating event that causes cognitive dissonance. I’m sure that the rationalizations will start pretty soon, though.

As Moe said, major cool points for the Velvet Underground nexus.

(I’ve never heard of Vincent Gallo.)

As has been stated before, tea-party members are Democrats, Independents, and Republicans.

So there goes that Tea Party meme.

Maureen Tucker has had a pretty working class existence lately.

the classic country music of the 1930′s to the 1960′s. Okay I like the 1920′s too but theres only a limit amount of music from that era. I don’t believe I have ever heard a Mariah Carey song–I believe she topped Elvis for the number of #1 records.

I thought Lou Reed played for the Knicks in the 1970′s but maybe that was Lou Brock for the Cardinals.

The Left must maintain the illusion that all right-thinking people fall under their umbrella. It hurts them to lose the arty, creative types, since Leftists also must maintain the illusion its followers do any thinking for themselves.

    >>I have never been ?cool.?

Being “cool” is for people who are prepared to work at it in such fashion that their actions are self-nullifying.

I am reminded of Dennis Miller’s explanation of why Madonna is Madonna (from the 90s): She’s the only one who wanted to be Madonna quite that badly.

Replace “Madonna” with the dreadful “Lady Gaga” for the instant update.

The cool and those who worship them: A pox on both their houses!

Effortlessly cool (the only way to fly): Chris Christie – Prez run in ’12? Give this guy his own TV show! (Surely a TV pilot about a rotund governor is in the works even as I hunt and peck. “Carter Country” redux: “Handle it, Roy! Handle it, handle it, handle it!”)

Cooper is known as a good-cheer, affable character as well as an actor, DJ, restaurateur, and 3-handicap celebrity golfer… but this man is also a serious born-again Christian and a political conservative. Although loathe to use his celebrity to promote personal beliefs, his patriotic, common-sense views have become better-known in recent years.

When asked how a shock-rocker like himself could be a Christian, Cooper responded: “Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a Christian, that’s a tough call. That’s real rebellion!”

A person is cool, doesn’t mean they’ve lost their mind in the murky insane forest of warper liberalism.

  • aesthete

Guess we can add another one to the list.

… and I find it hilarious that the Left is dismayed by one of their icons espousing anti-Socilaist views.

If, however, she had become a crack whore or died with a “spike in her vein” in a back alley somewhere, nobody would’ve heard or cared about it, much less found it remarkable.

Not everyone dies young or stupid or both. Some of us grew up and become conservative.

That is where the name Velvet Revolution came from. The left must not know much history if they don’t know VU already had an influence in getting rid of the commies in Eastern Europe.

  • swami7774

You’re referring to the band, correct? Didn’t they do lots of anti-nuclear stuff?

  • Vegas_Rick

under the links Moe provided are hilarious. Check them out.

  • aesthete

so I think that it makes sense to categorize them as part of the American right (though I don’t think they’d fit into the European right-wing).

  • rfpzzzzz

One of their big hits was “Heroin”.

I wasn’t surprised at all that Tom Scholz and Roger Waters (of Boston and Pink Floyd, respectively) were for Obama in 2008. About 90 percent of entertainer-types tend to be liberal/progressive. That’s why I was so amused to see Rosario Dawson at the Republican National Convention that year; I can’t imagine many black celebrities were willing to come out for McCain and against Obama.

I would hope that a Libertarian would not fit into a National Socialist/Democratic Socialist grouping.

The thing is that I’m totally used to being into bands whose members have a left slant, sometimes a pretty strong one. I have just learned to say “whatever” and enjoy the music. Same goes for movie stars and movies. Like Pablo Picasso stated, “The art is more beautiful than the artist.”

But the fascists on the left won’t hear of that. They really can’t make that kind of separation, so they demand fidelity to their views before they become a fan. It’s really funny in a pathetic sort of way, like saying “I’m not going to enjoy your music even if it’s enjoyable because I don’t like your ideas.” Heck, yeah, Streisand is a great singer. So is Madonna for that matter. Pink Floyd–awesome, even though Roger Waters is completely whack. And I could go on….

  • dudette

see or buy a movie or CD by Streisand or whoever or Clooney and Sean Penn. Not one thin dime will i let slip from my wallet to somewhere anywhere near their bank account. Detestable slugs.

  • ihateliberals

    Don’t forget.

super slutty personae, But there is a difference, Some of Madonna’s songs were actually quite good. She had some real talent.

  • gunsrus

except in the left wing media. I was a local Rock & Roller in the late sixties in Detroit. We were all capitalists as you learned real fast, finding work was easy, getting paid was the real trick.
At a “Blues Festival” at a local college campus they had managed to get a fairly large crowd attending. Magically Hanoi Jane shows up with her antiwar diatribe and finally gets violently driven off the stage.
The scales fell from my eyes when I got home that evening and the NBC news was showing how she was welcomed and cheered for, whenever she mentioned Nixon the crowd booed.
This was the most creative editing I had ever seen and caused me to NEVER believe anything on the Mainstream media again. The only time the crowd actually cheered was when she left the stage. They had a cut to the cheering crowd when she took the podium. It was also changed from a Blues Festival to a Anti War rally.

there is a natural tendency to see things in a left/liberal viewpoint. Maybe it is because, although they do work hard at their craft, they don’t really live in the real world.

If you make your living singing, or acting, you can get away with sleeping late, doing drugs(for a while anyway) having affairs and wild parties. In fact your job opportunities are probably enhanced by all of that.

And if you happen to be one of the ones who makes big money doing that then you might feel that luck, especially the luck of what talents you are born with, has more to do with success than merely working hard.

In addition, being good at any artistic pursuit takes a lot of your time, therefore very little actual time is devoted to finding out about the rest of the world. To such people liberalism is an easy way to make sense of the world, it does not require a lot of knowledge.

to see it. When the Tea Party marched on the Mall they down played how many people were there. Yesterday when they had a rally and had to pay people to come they tried to exaggerate the numbers. This time it back-fired. The AP couldn’t even make it seem like more people. The Mall when it is filled like it was with the Tea Party holds around 1 million people, The reflecting pool area when filled is only a few thousand people. The good thing is that people are getting wise to their lies. November 2nd is “Take the Trash Out Day”.

  • rightwingmom52

but not as good as it’s gonna get come November! I can’t wait to tell my son about this.
