FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Charlie Cook’s List of DOOM.

For those who don’t know: Charlie Cook is one of the more respected political handicappers out there, with a solid reputation for accurate forecasting.  I can personally attest to that, given that in 2008 I glumly used his site to assist me in the task of watching things spiral downward for the GOP.  As you can imagine, the 2010 election cycle has been a lot more enjoyable in that regard: and never so much so as recently, when Charlie Cook broke a rule.

You see, he doesn’t like to rate incumbents in trouble as being more in trouble than “Toss-Up.”  It’s a reasonable restriction, given that incumbency remains a powerful advantage for candidates, even when they’re in trouble – and Charlie Cook followed that rule back in 2008; even at the end of October of 2008, the only non-open seats that made it past the cut-off line were Tim Mahoney (D), who had just been discovered (if I remember correctly)  to have used campaign money to pay off a mistress; and Tom Feeney (R), who was… Tom Feeney, really.  In other words: in a bad year for incumbent Republicans, Cook unbent enough to call two beforehand.

Cook is already forecasting twelve, this cycle.

There is no question that Democrats have their backs to the wall. It’s unprecedented to see so many incumbents running behind their challengers.

While the Cook Political Report has a general policy of not putting unindicted incumbents in categories worse than our “Toss Up” column, which is akin to the critical ward of a hospital, we are now looking at moving a dozen or so Democratic House incumbents into the Lean Republican column..

Below is Cook’s List of Dead Incumbent Democrats Walking:

Race Democrat Republican
AZ-01 Ann Kirkpatrick Paul Gosar
CO-04 Betsy Markey Cory Gardner
FL-08 Alan Grayson Daniel Webster
FL-24 Suzanne Kosmas Sandy Adams
IL-11 Debbie Halvorson Adam Kinzinger
OH-01 Steve Driehaus Steve Chabot
OH-15 Mary Jo Kilroy Steve Stivers
PA-03 Kathy Dahlkemper Mike Kelly
TX-17 Chet Edwards Bill Flores
VA-02 Glenn Nye Scott Rigell
VA-05 Tom Perriello Robert Hurt
WI-08 Steve Kagen Reid Ribble

And that’s just the list of Democrats that Cook has pronounced dead on arrival; he at the same time declared another half-dozen as being Toss-ups, which up to now was as bad as it got in Charlie’s system.  Most of those names are no real surprise; there’s a couple who have been pretty much targets since before they were even sworn in, and most of the rest have achieved that status months ago.  What’s interesting is that they’re in this mess even though they knew full well that they were at risk.

Then again, knowing that a sixteen ton weight is rapidly descending towards your head is nice and all, but if you don’t have any way to do anything about it, well…

It couldn’t happen to a more deserving group of people (unless Nancy Pelosi was included).

Nov. 3rd could be a very happy day for me.

  • throwback59

    things to come:
I attended a fall festival today in Yorktown NY, NY19 congressional district.
While walking around I saw Congressman John Hall milling about, Lurch-like,
expressionless, stiff, clearly not happy to be there. He seemed to ignore the crowds.
Later on Republican candidate Nan Hayworth was working the crowds. She was happy, enthusiastic and greeted everyone she could. When she saw me looking her way she made a bee-line to me and cheerfully asked for my support. After I told her I was a supporter, we chatted for another 30 seconds.
This seems to support recent stories that the polls are moving Hayworth’s way.

  • SteveLA

My ex Congresscritter Maxine Waters D Corruption being on that list would bring great joy to me, but racial politics being what they are in LA County, not going to happen.

  • usadying

But I’m happy to see Ann Kirkpatrick.

all three House Dems are in big trouble. (Not counting Pastor or Raul)

  • snowsoul

Kirpatrick, my congresswoman, is on the list. I wish it was Bradley Beauchamp to the right of her there, but I’ll still be happy to vote for Gosar.

290 votes to override in the HOUSE and 70 to choose from to override in the SENATE. YES WE CAN, with the devine help of GOD almighty. Pray for a Conservative Turnout! No to Acorn and SEIU, etc., cheating and stealing the ballot.

  • banzaibob

It would be great to see her rot somewhere in the House. After they take the gavel out of cold Botox hands they need to find the smallest office and put her there. Also find a way to keep her off any of the committees and find the most menial tasks to make her life miserable.

Republicans should cut off any earmarks for the SF area just to punish those folks for keeping her in office. Just to make sure the other Dems don’t try to help let them know what’s in store for them if they do.

Sorry – I’m an SC grad and couldn’t resist.

  • http://charlemagne-the-hammer.blogspot.com/ DerKrieger

…Vic Snyder would be on this list but he opted not to run again because he KNEW he’d be wiped out, crushed, destroyed. He’s a coward.

He does however IMO illustrate that in normal times people will reelect the worst incumbents because they simply aren’t paying attention to the goings on in DC. It takes an Obama to awaken the usually sleepy American to the danger in their midst.
The votes for Obamacare, Cap & Tax, TARP, et al have highlighted just who in DC is for BIG government and who isn’t and those votes opened a lot of eyes.

  • http://charlemagne-the-hammer.blogspot.com/ DerKrieger

We’ll get a lot of Dems joining us on conservative legislation because they know the bills will never survive an Obama veto so they get the best of both worlds; they get to support a Conservative agenda item confident in the knowledge that Obama will veto it. It;s typical DC duplicity.

  • merryj1

But I’d really prefer to see them ban all earmarks. If they fail to do that, though, let’s go with your Pelosi-SF idea.

Here’s the list of D’s most recently moved to “Toss-Up” by Cook:

    AZ-08 – Giffords (YaY!!)
    GA-02 – Bishop
    KY-06 – Chandler (Sweet!)
    NJ-03 – Adler
    NY-23 – Owens (he’s toasty now!)
    OR-05 – Schrader

The only race that was downgraded was OH-13, which Cook moved to “Likely Dem” from “Lean”, but I think he’s basing this just on the phony sex. harassment lawsuit against Ganley and I think Cook’s wrong that that will get any traction.

Despite the fact that Cook still has it rated as “Lean Dem”, I still say that IN-02 is the district to watch early on Election Day: if Donnelly holds on, I’m not sure we’ll take the House; but if we take IN-02, we’re pretty certain to take the House, and if Donnelly loses badly it’ll likely be a real bloodbath for the D’s on Nov. 2…

  • snowsoul

    I’m actually in Prescott, also.

  • IJB

She won’t hang around to finish out her term if the Dems lose the House (which I think is very, very likely to happen).

I imagine there will be a special election in CA-08 by Summer of 2011…

The O won’t allow her to retire. She will be the biggest stalwart amongst the Progressives that still remain in Congress. He talked about hand to hand combat if the Republicans win. Who better than Pelosi to keep delivering the blows. The O will desperately need Pelosi to keep his message alive. The witch will die in office, even if she has to pay her own way to get back and forth between San Fran and DC. She is committed to the “cause.”

  • http://charlemagne-the-hammer.blogspot.com/ DerKrieger

I called my Senators, Lincoln and Pryor (D-AR), all during the Obamacare debate pleading for them both to vote against it and telling them what they both already knew, that 70% or Arkansans opposed the bill and yet both voted for it. Now Lincoln will likely suffer the worst defeat ever in Senate history. She brought this on herself and Pryor is next. The purge of the socialists must be merciless.

Nasty Nancy is 70 now, I can’t see her hanging around or wanting to loose Air Pelosi and all the perks she has now if the Donks loose big.

    I will not be sad.

  • IJB

It’s an R+2 district, so it’s slightly GOP-leaning, but not overwhelmingly so.

But, to take the House, ‘marginal’ districts like IN-02 (and some others like KY-06, NC-07 & NC-08, CA-11, FL-08, etc.), are going to have to be won by our side. Districts like this are especially important ‘wins’ when you factor in that we’re probably not going to take all of the strongly-R districts that we *should* be taking (e.g. ID-01, OK-02, MS-04, UT-02)…

Anyway, Donnelly is hard ‘beat’, but it’s doable, and on Election Night (early), I’ll be looking closely to see if he, and Chandler of KY-06, are going down…

  • The_Rebel

the crowning moment of our victory in 1994 was when I watched Newt Gingrich receive the Speaker’s gavel from Dick Gephardt, after 40 years in the wilderness. I never thought that I would ever see an event that could top that. To see Pelosi hand over the gavel to Speaker John Boehner, or whomever the Republicans elect as Speaker, will be a sight to behold.

  • tngal

Need that on a shirt. Whether its cooks or rasmussen or whatever, on the morning of 11/02/11 we will all wake up with a mix of excitement, expectation and anguish as we fret on individual races in some districts we never knew existed. The logical part of the brain says we shouldn’t get too excited at this stage, but when you bump into new people everyday in a blue county talking about how much they hate the current administrationit, just gives you the warm fuzzies.

  • Mike Ferguson

I saw him speak at my brothers law school graduation and in between the waves of nausea I heard him say. “As many of you no doubt know I have decided not to run for congress again.” Since I didn’t want to embarrass my brother I refrained from clapping, however his next statement took the cake, Vic has triplets, I believe its triplets, anyway he said the reason he wasn’t running again was it was difficult when you “start having children in litters.” After the proceedings I was milling about in the crowd and heard a group of obvious libs talking about how great it was that he would give up his political ambitions for his children. I just couldn’t help myself so I joined the conversation and pointed out how good I thought it was that he would quit for his children as well and that I was sure that it had nothing to do with the fact that at the time he was 17 points behind a Republican……that was ANY Republican. Surely that had no effect on his decision. I then enjoyed the stunned looks for a few seconds before I strolled on and met my family for by brothers graduation dinner. So long Vic you will be sorely missed…by someone….I am reasonably sure anyway.

  • qsclues

Tim Walz is now in the “Lean D” column from “Likely D”. That’s definitely a winnable seat…go Randy Demmer!

  • Mike Ferguson
  • indylawyer

He’s already got 22 Democratic seats at least leaning R, 60 that are at least toss-ups, and a total of 110 Democratic seats in play. Only 17 Republican seats in play, and 10 of those are likely R.

  • Jonbontx

I have never understood why the strong-R districts keep voting for D’s. Especially due to some of the votes the D’s in those districts have taken. Prime example is TX-17 (Chet Edwards), that is a R +20 district, but hopefully this is the year he gets voted out.

I won’t be able to watch TV, or be online, in the evening on election day, will be too nervous. I always feel that I bring bad luck to the “teams” that I want to win if I watch them. I know it’s silly, just can’t help it.

Anyone who thinks we are going to get Dems out of office without pulling them out by their feet while they are hanging on to the drapes is crazy.

Perriello is running extremely effective ads in VA, including advertising on Rush, and I have yet to hear a Hurt ad. Etheridge is bombarding the airwaves in NC, and Price is mobilizing his racist ACORN thugs as we speak in NC-04.

This is a long, long way from being over, and if we don’t watch it we won’t take the House, much less the Senate. I am serious.

  • qsclues

which is the highest number since 1994.

    Moderate- 27%

    Liberal- 18%

Moderates are now at their lowest level since 1994. Liberals have always been the smallest number.

When you add in Independents leaning Republican, the number goes up to 57%.

I hope the squishy moderate Republicans in DC read these polls, including Cantor who this morning once again begged the Democrats to work together with them. No Eric, I want the Republicans to run a steamroller over the Democrats in DC. They don’t play nice Eric, not any of them.

  • Scope

or downright false, like the one with the elderly lady saying that Perriello voted to save her Medicare, and that Hurt will bankrupt Medicare. Perriello is the one who voted for Ocare, that included cuts in Medicare. Many of his ads are trying to make Hurt look like the incumbent, rather than himself. That has been pointed out often on local talk radio. . At the end of one ad, he says, we can’t afford 10 more years of Hurt. Hurt is a State Senator, not the sitting DC Congressman. In others he is blaming Hurt for not voting for extended unemployment, and that Hurt is sending jobs overseas.

Yes, Perriello is advertising on FOX TV and radio which obviously goes far beyond the district. He is counting on his supporters in NY to help him out once again, along with his SEIU buddies that he bussed in and paid for his Ocare Townhalls last year.

I’ve heard plenty of Hurt ads on the radio, and on local TV. Hurt has remained positive in his ads, while Perriello went very negative very early. That isn’t sitting well with the voters here in the 5th, and, it will backfire on him. Perriello’s “internal” polls are a joke. They were done by far left radical NY Strategy Groups. As the radio host has pointed out many times, SurveyUSA who has Perriello down 23 points was the most accurate polling in the district in 08, even though Perriello is claiming they are useless. He liked their polling results in 08. They weren’t useless then.

The only way Perriello wins in 10 is if he steals the election again, however, we have a Republican Governor this time, that has appointed a new Secretary of State.

  • uselogic

He is a vile piece of human garbage. And in his case, it ain’t just his political bent.

We still have to be careful…. he is just the kind to try something illegal to steal the election. Especially with his out of state groups & money. I’m giving Dan a little more and bringing my vid cam to the polling place.

  • uselogic

people are so stupid about school and kids. I cant remember the last time anything to do with k-12 and money lost. The public has totally bought into the dollars / student crud.

  • tess_in_va

Perriello is running ads everywhere: radio, TV, even on Hulu! Just because his ads are everywhere that is not evidence the ads are effective.

He is running scared because his constituents loathe and despise him! I attended one of his townhall meeting regarding healthcare and he was booed!

The only way Perriello can win this election is by stealing it.

  • Christine (Trelaina)

but if I’m reading it right, for Murkowski?

RCP has Miller in the lead, although not by much, but with a caveat that it’s hard to poll a race with a write-in candidate…

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2010/senate/ak/alaska_senate_miller_vs_mcadams_vs_murkowski-1700.html

  • Jack_Savage

The one with the two old guys talking to each other. And if you aren’t paying attention, which many voters aren’t, it is not that hard to believe the absolutely shameless lies Tommy Boy is telling. Much like Etheridge in NC.

MSNBC has a Perriello on at least once, and the media are doing all they can to help him.

We’ll see. I hope he gets waxed in this election, and the granola eating, LSD addled hippies in Charlottesville all jump off the Rotunda at UVA.

  • Adjoran

He’s not set up to show a different Republican nominee than the incumbent when the incumbent was running, I suspect.

There is almost no chance of Murky winning. She might draw off enough votes to elect the Beglich, but not to win herself. Write-ins always underperform polls which offer their names. At the polling place, her name will be nowhere to be seen, and voters will either have to actively seek the machine button for writing in or request a paper ballot. Very few actually do this, which is why write-in campaigns, even by well-known and respected candidates, don’t succeed.

The one exception was Strom Thurmond, and that was a very special circumstance where the beloved incumbent Maybank died after the primary, and the Democrats showed disrespect by picking a replacement behind closed doors on the day of his funeral. The public was incensed over this insult, and Thurmond stepped forward and won.

I don’t see many Alaskans getting passionate about Murky.

  • http://www.sunshinestatesarah.com sunshinestatesarah

Thanks to the hard work of conservatives around the state and even all over the country, we actually have a chance to turn Florida solid red from Orlando north to the border. I’m not kidding.

Southerland is kicking Boyd’s tail, Stearns and Mica are snuggly safe in their seats, Grayson is setting a world record for how many times he can shoot himself in the foot, and Kosmas has been left out in the woods to starve by the DCCC (they are pulling back their ad buys).

The only remaining liberal blemish is Corrine Brown in District 3 (look up “Corrine Brown Go Gata” on youtube to see this embarrassment in action). District 3 is as “perfect” a Democrat district as they could hope for, or at least it was the last time it was drawn. Unfortunately for Corrine, people don’t stay where they are put, and there have been an awful lot of new Rs and NPAs moving in the district. Add in Corrine’s sky high negatives – even in her base – and she’s actually vulnerable this year.

The Mike Yost campaign commissioned a poll by Pulse Opinion Strategies (the same group that does the polling for Rasmussen), and it showed he was within single digits of beating her. That was a month ago, and since then Dick Morris has endorsed Yost and provided fundraising support (see http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/give-to-the-neediest-house-candidates/ ).

I never thought I’d be able to say this, but District 3 is potentially winnable. Please check out the campaign and consider donating. www.Yost2010.com

She is a classic case of the dementia brought on by self-worship. She got that gavel in her hand and really thought it made her some kind of all-important being. 70 years old and look at her. Full of Botox and silicone to the point of exploding. Refuses to give up her youth, just like the power in the house. Truly delusional piece of garbage that needs to be put on public trail for all to see.
