FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

State of the Race: Pat Toomey (R CAND, PA-SEN).

With less than two weeks to go and tightening polls, we decided to check in with Pat Toomey on how the Senate race was going. Short version: well, but this is no time to stop now.

Pat’s site is here.

The Scranton Times, the big newspaper in Northeastern PA, has been touting Sestak over Toomey and Carney (D-10) other Marino (R) for some time. Today, the Times’s front page is how Sestak is now ahead of Toomey by 3% according to new polls conducted by instate organizations. The poll, does, however, have Carney even with Marino.

Monday, the Scranton Times had three columns each summarizing the liberal, Obamacare-supporting Carney versus Republican Marino. The three columns on Carney were glowing and designed to present him as an independent conservative hunter (although records show he supported Pelosi 91% of the time), while 2 of the three columns on Marino were attacks on Marino.

If Toomey and Marino are to win, the voters have to see beyond the liberal media in PA and the constant Union bombardment (and the voting of dead people in urban enclaves). I gave up on the Scranton Times a number of years ago when I read the full text of an AP story in one newspaper and then saw that the same Scranton Times story had cut out every paragraph in the AP story that was favorable to Republicans. The local radio show here, which is aired right after Rush instead of Hannity, constantly attacks the Republicans.

It is an uphill fight, quite frankly, given the need to overcome the power of the Scranton Times and the amount of effort the union puts into the elections.

has been to triple my donations to Toomey. I’d like to think people have had enough.

I’ve said it before, this race is a bellwether for PA. Like Toomey says, there couldn’t be more contrast between two candidates. Sestak’s former district (PA-6) is rated D+3. Per his radical views, (which I can only assume include support for Sharia law based on his dealings with CAIR), he has no business being anywhere near D+3. How can PA be so out of whack?

Toomey needs to win this, not just for the country but for PA as well.

The Club For Growth is buying $1 million in ads to be shown in the Philly media market. These ads are going to blast Sestak on his ties to Pelosi & Obama. Of course, watch for the media and Sestak to cry about secret special interest groups.

…That seems very persuasive to me.

Even if you take the recent Quin. +2 Toomey poll, and apply a 2006 PA-turnout scenario (*very* unlikely in 2010!) the race is basically tied, with Sestak barely ahead (by about 0.5%).

Because the real turnout-breakdown is likely to be significantly more favorable than 2006, the least charitable thing that can be said is that Toomey is actually ahead.

But if you start applying a 2004-like (or better) turnout-breakdown to PA in 2010, Toomey zooms ahead to the about +6-8% differential that we were seeing until just last week or so.

IOW, I still very much like our chances in PA. (Frankly, at this point, I’m more concerned about CO than I am about either PA or KY…)

And just imagine…. if the media actually publicized Sestak’s involvement with CAIR and the WH bribes. You know, like we’d be hearing 24/7 if it were Toomey. Sestak isn’t just a radical leftist. He is corrupt and will fit in with the worst of the establishment types. I have to think PA is awake enough not to let this jerk in the senate.
