New Alaska election write-in rules eliminate ‘Lisa M.’ gambit.

"I'm guessing the Murkowski campaign is regretting this decision about now."

The above quote comes from a colleague, upon hearing the news that a fairly successful ‘get your name on the write-in list’ registration drive was formed in response to the Alaskan Supreme Court’s decision to suddenly make write-in candidate lists available for voters.  You see, if you look at the old list you’ll see that there’s already a “Lisa M.” on there (Lisa M. Lackey); and if you look at the original article you’ll see that anybody who requests the write-in list will have his or her ballot separated out, in order to facilitate any possible appeals.  That means that it’s going to be fairly easy to find all the flawed ballots where the voter was too unclear about which ‘Lisa M.’ was meant.

Hey.  Rules are rules.  What are we supposed to do, ignore the courts?

Moe Lane (crosspost)

PS: Joe Miller for Senate.

I suggested it last month. Glad to see that I’m ahead of the curve once in a while.

Do you have a link where I can donate to Lisa M. Lackey :-)

    She deserves it.

NPR blog headline on home page:

“Murkowski Foes Pack Write-In List To Cause ‘Chaos’ ”

    Gee, who started the chaos?

Murkowski defying the voters in the primary or those pesky American people who will not be denied?

  • jollygiantsd

You know that this will cause the loony lefties to force month long recounts so that Murkowski can continue to claim that all the “Lisa M.” votes are for her and not the other candidate.
I just hope in reality all the votes with “Lisa M.” are invalidated as it does not show any clear intention of which candidate the voter really wanted. Of course the libs will be steaming mad that it did not go Murkowski’s way, but the rules are clear and the write in votes that only show “Lisa M” are not.

  • powertothepeople

if the idiots who want to vote for her can not take the time at home to prepare themselves so they can spell the name of the candidate they want to write in, they deserve to not have their vote counted.

What I am waiting for is the results in that state. I want to see how many so called republicans and conservative republicans do their best to hand the election to the democrat by voting for that (w)itch. I used the “W” but feel free to use the same or substitute another letter.

  • distantvoter

The Democrats certainly won’t. They’d prefer her to Miller, but they aren’t going to pour a lot of money into a bunch of legal battles just to get a RINO elected. That won’t give them enough power to make it worth it.

I don’t see this kind of thing unless it is really, really close.

  • CincoSolas_del_Bronx

Sorry. Memories. No mas. Carry on.

  • victrola

Even with a liberal interpretation of a write in vote, I though Lisa’s chances were dismal.

The only real threat left is how many votes will she siphon away from Miller? Even if voters write in the “wrong” name in, those could still be potential Miller votes. Murkowsi won’t be able to win this, but if 15% of Republican voters throw their vote away, could the Dem slip through?

I doubt it though, my guess is she ends up with 5% of the vote, but Republicans really should have made an example out of her so we don’t have to devout resources and money to what should be a safe seat.

  • papabear

The final tally is 147 official write in candidates (from http://www.elections.alaska.gov/ci_pg_cl_2010_genr.php#uss ). The “Real” Lisa is #104 on the list. Lisa M. Lackey is 84th on the list :-)

I’ve published a sorted list of the candidates as a Google Doc spreadsheet ( https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Amk5d6E5erO1dHQ1VlRLdmpvSUtScTJMLWcxbnV2SWc&hl=en )

The Murkowski Campaign is mailing out junk mail touting the endorsements of the NRA and Sen. Patti Murray.

Fact Check. The NRA endorsed MoooCowSky in the primary. The NRA is neutral for the general election. While Patti Murray praised Murky for bi-partisan in the past, Murray is backing McAdams. In fact, the MoooCowSky campaign is running ads calling a vote for McAdams a wasted vote.

With the Operation Chaos of Write-In candidates, liberal votes may decide to dump Murky and rally around McAdams.

  • The_Gadfly

a DOOM II category for establishment R’s who lost but continue to Buck the Tea Party anyway.

    Good news, nice post.

  • JadedByPolitics

I imagined a very angry man not seeing this coming after suggesting a write in candidacy. I personally will enjoy the backlash against those in the Republican Party of Alaska who will be DRUMMED out of the Party after this election…..I hope they are miserable and broke, looking for work and not finding it!

  • chihank

Dittman Research has the race Murkowski 37, Miller 27, McAdams 23.

I don’t know about this polling company.

The past 2 polls showed Murkowski leading. However one was done by the Murky PAC, The other was done by a Labor Union.

Also who knows how many Murky votes will be tossed out due to Operation Chaos. I’d say Murky needs to be polling ahead by at least 10 to have a shot of winning.

Just the other day… started to reply to a post of Moe’s… but decided against it ’cause it involved a word that conjurs up pictures of “unicorn pachaderms”…

Sheeeshh… if I had aposted what I thought the other day… I was afraid Moe and his two brothers… Larry Lane and Curly Lane… would whup my gluteous maximus.

for being reliable. I doubt there is any solid polling, bottom line is get out and vote for Miller and encourage everyone you know to do the same. Besides Miller, on the state level there is a union effort to dump Mike Kelly who needs support and we have Pete Higgins in district 8 to replace Thomas (another union hack). There are also the bond issues to defeat and the liberal supreme court justice to recall.

  • clement

Due to either registering too late or not meeting age requirements.

  • america1st

I would leave the poll analysis to Neal, who seems to have a talent for it. I sent Joe my money and my good wishes. I have to say that if I were an AK voter and Joe were not in the race, I’d take some meds to suppress my gag reflex and vote (D) in this race. I didn’t know much about this sleazebag before, but I have to say she has made an indelible impression as an intolerably arrogant elitist and it would have to be someone far less appetizing than the dim in the race to make me vote for her. In fact, I would probably vote 3rd party rather than give this yapping toy poodle my vote.

  • andysmith

the fact that the GOP establishment hedged their bets by NOT kicking Murkowski out of her senate committees. I think the only reason why there’s not a more vocal support for Joe other than here from national GOP types is that Murkowski either threatened or made a deal with GOP leadership to stay out of her way or she’ll caucus with the Democrats…and the fool leadership took it.
Miller, like any other candidate, has his faults, but I would hold this one at the leadership of McConnell and Cornyn if Murkowski or McAdams pull it off.

  • takemccain2

There is no doubt in my mind that the NRSC and the GOP Leadership tried to play this both ways instead of finding their marbles and telling Lisa that she had to go after losing the primary.
They are mostly responsible – if not completely – for this farce just as they are for the mess in Florida due to endorsing Crist.
If Miller loses because of the backroom dealings of GOP Senators, then I ask that the winning Tea Party candidates have nothing to do with Murkowski, McConnell, McCain, Cornyn or any of the other backstabbers who engineered this coup. All those mentioned are as much ideological enemies in my mind as are the Democrats across the aisle. We need to electorally purge this party with every future election cycle until we rid ourselves of these liars and professional politicians.
I watched as John McCain purchased a primary win with the help of RNC and NRSC cronies and I won’t stand for it if they steal another one from true conservatives. Stand with us, Tea Party Republicans. Keep your principles in the ‘not for sale’ category and fight for the Constitution, not senate tradition. We will take care of these others when their turn on the ballot comes around.
    I hate the GOP leadership.

  • papabear

The column on the left only lists the 147 official candidates. The column on the right includes the 20+ additional candidates that were too late or did not meet age requirements.

  • takemccain2

We really need to win this one so I encourage anyone and everyone who can to pitch in. Let’s help get a good man elected who will uphold the Constitution, cut earmarks and end GOP elitism.

  • takemccain2

They’ve always showed Murkowski ahead, even in August and September, and usually by 8-10 points whereas most other polls have showed Miller with an average of 2-3 point leads.
If their data looks suspect it is because their data is suspect. They basically lead respondents when they poll them.

Lisa with all her lawyers can individually and summarily sue all the “phony” candidates of “electioneering”.

But this is TRUE FREEDOM AT WORK. There is a huge huge lesson here to come.

    Pray for the Alaskan conservatives.

Murkowski foes did try to pack the write-in list. This is what Miller supporters (Murkowski foes) themselves readily admit. Why is this simple and succinct headline anything but accurate?

Anyone can be a write-n candidate. Why not Murkowski?

Joe Leiberman thought the Democrats nominated a senate candidate way more liberal than people in Connecticut wanted. So after he lost the Democratic primary, he ran (and won) as in independent. Were you offended then?

Maybe Joe MIller is not too conservative for Alaskan Republicans, but maybe Murkowski realizes that he IS too conservative for the rest of Alaska. Good for her.

What are you afraid of? That she might be right? Funny how the mavericks are all about thinking outside the box, until they’re not. Hypocrite!

  • mikeinnyc

Lissa Murkowski’s full name must be on a write-in ballot for it to count.

  • mikeinnyc

If the Democrat dropped out, she would certainly win.

  • mikeinnyc

and the Republican party will be relegated to permanent minority status

  • mikeinnyc

Murkowski is running close to Miller, both with 30+% It’s the Democrat who trails.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Those polls are deceptive because they prompt people for her support, but HER NAME WON’T BE ON THE BALLOT.

  • fbks

needs to consider what they are getting if Lisa makes it. Having Fagan, a radio host pulled off the air is a serious breach of his 1st amendment rights in the pursuit of power.
The other issue is her main backers are the Native Corporations protecting their questionable no bid exemption status. The Dems are already looking into this and how will the Republican senate caucus respond to accusations of harboring corporate corruption when it is. Do they make fools of themselves to keep Lisa in the caucus, or risk losing her to the Dem caucus? If it were not for the Native Corp backing and money, Lisa would not have a chance. Who will she be looking out for?
Her whole platform is based on the claim that her seniority places her in the best position to garner earmarks and steer pork to Alaska. How does that fit into the need to reduce the deficit and wasteful spending? Miller does have issues and has run a very poor campaign, but he is a much better fit for a Republican party that needs to restore a reputation of fiscal constraint. If he is defeated and either Lisa or the Dem are elected, a fair share of the responsibility is on the Republican senate leadership for not dealing with Lisa quickly and decisively after the primary loss.
I am not indicating that I think Miller is toast, I got out and voted for him today and am bringing my wife and others to vote tomorrow. Aside from blogging for his campaign, I am volunteering for poll watching and in every way backing him. He has a good shot and it all relies on the GOTV. I would encourage Redstaters to not forget Alaska and realize this state is in jeopardy and needs as much support as possible.

  • Zaber

She should have honored the commitment she made to support the Republican voters’ choice post-primary, instead of being a spoiled, entitled child?

The only hypocrite here is Lisa Murkowski. She didn’t get the result she wanted in the primary, after taking NRSC money, and so she turned her back on her party and did her own thing.

There is zero defense for her actions. The people spoke in Alaska, but the only thing she can hear are the voices in her own head.
