Rep. Steve Israel gets his payoff.

Back in the day, it was pretty strongly alleged that the Democratic party unceremoniously threatened Rep. Steve Israel in order to keep him from running against appointed Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in her primary this year.  Strenuously denied at the time, of course – remember, this was before the Sestak and Romanoff scandals erupted – but plausible, very plausible.  Both the threats (loss of donor money, active campaigning by the President, deliberate organizing of the African-American vote against Israel), and the promises (the gratitude of the Democratic party for not going up against a weak candidate, and maybe even a promotion to the inner circle).  And after all of that, oddly enough: Steve Israel didn’t run for Senate.

And now look here: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday named Representative Steve Israel of New York to lead the House Democratic campaign committee into the next election, putting him in charge of the party’s effort to regain the majority it lost in November.”  Which certainly qualifies as “inner circle” – and which keeps him from even thinking about a Senate bid until 2016.  Guess the Democrats learned their lesson from the Blanche Lincoln debacle: lock up the primary challengers early, and all that.  A little too smart for my liking: I prefer the Democrats to have the kind of thinking that causes them to keep the same House leadership team that threw away sixty-two seats and counting.

Still, nice to see that the Other Side is at least still sticking to the twin principles of Fundraising Above All and Incumbents First, Everybody Else Last

to get him out. Knowing that if he got reelected this would happen. He’s a lowlife and i’m sorry to know he’s going to spread his deceiving tatics across this country.

He beat a good man, John Gomez, too good. A middle to upper income area where one would think people know how to read and write, tie their own shoe laces, things like that. And this is what we get ! Maybe the exposure Israel gets will wake a few up in the next two years, but I wouldn’t bet a fiver on it.

That he thinks of this as a promotion shows he is none too bright – the NDCC Chairman isn’t going to have nearly the effect on Democrats’ prospects for the House in 2012 as Obama, Reid, and Pelosi (hey, hey, the gang’s all here). And all of them put together can’t have the effect the economy will . . .

The only President reelected with unemployment 7.5% or higher in the election year since they started keeping the statistics was FDR in 1936 and 1940. And make no mistake, every political move this Administration makes in the next two years will be made on the basis of how it promotes reelection, the House be damned.

Another electoral embarrassment just puts Israel in the position to take the blame. Since, as you know, it couldn’t possibly be the fault of Obama, Reid, or Pelosi, because they are just so awesome. Joe Biden says so.

At first I was thinking the NRSC had the corner on this, but then I realized theirs is RINO Incumbents First, Tea Partiers Last.

I am sure that you will have many other opportunities to express your hatred of the various national GOP committees and be on-topic while doing so.

after hearing the “incumbent first” thing a few hundred times this year. Wasn’t trying to thread-jack, just offer a bit of (apparently weak) humor. Sorry about that.

Was Gerrymandered specially for Israel – and was probably part of a deal to keep Pete King safe in the 3rd. The 2nd is mostly in Suffolk County but includes a piece of Oyster Bay that is very Democratic. The 3rd (Pete King R-Seaford) is mostly in Nassau, but has the Oyster Bay chunk carved out and in exchange gets a swath of the South Shore of Suffolk in Babylon township. My guess is that if you traded the two areas so that the districts didn’t cross the county line you’d have toss ups in both districts (currently the 2nd is D+4 and the 3rd R+4), which probably nobody wanted. It will be interesting to see how they adjust the lines for 2012 to keep these two safe.
