Maxine Waters (D) case delayed via Democratic incompetence?

That’s what the Washington Post reports, at least (H/T: The Daily Caller).  To refresh people’s memories: Rep. Waters used her position on the House Financial Services Committee to intervene on behalf of OneUnited Bank, which happens to be a bank with a personal connection with Waters.  The case was set to go in September, only to be delayed at the last second.  It will be looked at in the next Congress, much to the displeasure of Democrats.

Highlights from the WaPo article:

  • The ostensible reason for the delay of the Waters case is that new information in the investigation was suddenly deemed necessary for a proper prosecution.  Current Ethics chair Zoe Lofgren (D) took this event as an opportunity to try to get two investigators fired; this was blocked by Rep. Jo Bonner (R), who is the current Ranking Member*.
  • Lofgren allegedly mucked up the investigation from the start by not being aggressive on subpoenaing either Rep Waters and/or Rep. Barney Frank (chairman of Finance) and his staff.
  • Lofgren also allegedly encouraged an unseemly haste to the proceedings, from trying to lock in a pre-election trial date to cutting investigators’ allotted time to present their case by four-fifths.
  • By all accounts, Lofgren had also not prepared herself or her committee for a scenario where Rep. Waters was prepared to fight the charges; thus creating a leadership crisis when Waters did not make a deal.

It’s that last bullet point that most suggests incompetence, rather than malice; if Rep. Lofgren had been attempting to deliberately muck up the proceedings she probably would have been less obviously gobsmacked when Rep. Waters decided to play chicken with the Ethics committee.  Admittedly, Lofgren could have been trying to sabotage the case and was later unpleasantly surprised to find out that Waters wasn’t prepared to accept any punishment for her ethical lapses; but the simplest solution is often the correct one.  And it doesn’t get much simpler than “the current class of Congressional Democrats have all the administrative and legislative acumen of moldy milk bottles.”

But the point is, as they say, moot.  Waters will be investigated by the 112th Congress, no doubt accompanied by her shrill cries of ‘racism!’ – and on an endless loop.  Such is life.

*There is some indication that Zoe Lofgren will not be Ranking Member on Ethics next year.  If so, this case and the Rangel disaster are probably the reasons why.

which proves the “Ethics” system in the House is just a joke anyway.

It is mildly interesting to note how stupid the Democrats can be, even when they are just trying to cover up for their colleagues. Lofgren never was the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, though.

Maxine’s delay is a setup to make the case that the GOP are racist since they are sure to take Maxine to the woodshed as soon as possible. IMHO, the GOP need to run some lilly whites into the process to balance things out… Surely there must be someone available to toss under the bus along with Maxine….

but he did you campaign funds in his last defense, a big no-no….NO?

I feel like Moe is giving undue credit as to Zoe’s critical thinking abilities here. You have to be pretty stupid to muck things up this badly. She also seems to be getting bad advice from another Mongrel-Socialist-pimp Dem.. That has to be where the firing 2 investigators was attempted. In the real world, you do these kinds of things at work, you are suspended immediately, until you prove you are innocent. Why do we let these Politicians run amok for years after they have been charged with serious abuses or crimes? Its no wonder today’s Politicians walk around with the idea they are a new breed of “Untouchables.” This has to be rectified. A few prison sentences and serious fines would go a long way to making these Tyrants think twice before committing crimes against America and her laws.

The sunlight coming these clowns way in 2011 better be righteous and full bore. A solid look into this whole ordeal could very well clean out a whole nest of incompetent Wanna-be Tyrants in the House. This is where Darrell Issa will come into play. I just pray Issa is half as serious as he alludes to, and it isn’t just another dramatic DC production. I mean for all the huff and puff about Rangel’s “trial”. he didn’t do one day in jail for the Federal crime of Income tax evasion over a period of 17 years! Did he even pay the penalties? Doubt it, as that data seems to have fallen into Obama’s secret vault as far as I can tell.

    Transparency my ass.

of Black Democrats and Black Democrats who have been caught breaking the law? It seems to be pretty damn high to me.

This is what happens when a people place their blind faith in one party. The demagogues, grifters, and kingfish take advantage of them.

And yes, it could happen to conservatives also if we are not careful, in fact it has in the past. Just because a person has an R by their name and knows all the conservative hot buttons does not mean they are any good.

West has administered federal justice as an Army battalion commander. West can also speak with authority about the responsibilties leaders have, to act above reproach.

Let Waters call Scott and West racists, or Uncle Toms. OK…Waters won’t do it directly, but her cronies will.

IIRC, West is already a prime Dem target for 2012. He might relish a public fight with a racism pimp and slimy operator like Waters. IMO, the voters of West’s district will be pleased, not angered, to see West go toe-to-toe with Waters.

If neither West nor Scott can be on Ethics, then let them be the talking heads of the House GOP as this brouhaha heats up.

Better yet—West and Scott should seek out African-American media, and ask loudly and often why Waters should get a break because of her race.

Something tells me that African-American media personalities may shy away from defending Waters IF they fear being questioned, loudly and publicly, as to why they’re giving Waters a break for everything slimy that she’s done.

Scott and West can ask those questions. West, especially, knows that “taking the offensive” and “keeping and maintaining the initiative” are two of the nine Principles of War.
