FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Klein’s Crazy Constitutional Commentary.

(H/T Instapundit) This comment is going to haunt Ezra Klein for the rest of his career as a ‘wonk:’

…as it should, because it was an incredibly stupid thing to say – even considering that it was said on MSNBC, which means that almost nobody saw it anyway. For those without video access, Klein (in the process of sneering at the GOP’s plan to start the 112th Congress with a reading of the Constitution*) rather bravely admitted that he has a learning disability which makes it difficult for him to read English properly:

The issue with the Constitution is not that people don’t read the text and think they’re following it. The issue with the Constitution is that the text is confusing because it was written more than a hundred years ago.

At least, I assume that’s what he’s admitting. Because the alternative is to take seriously his notion that there really is something difficult to comprehend about a document so simple and straightforward that its mere existence argues strenuously against the notion that nothing well-written ever comes out of committee.

As you might have guessed, I am not taking seriously Klein’s notion.

Moe Lane (crosspost)

PS: I am stepping lightly over the fact that Klein apparently had to have somebody with a working knowledge of American history correct him over the actual age of the US Constitution (note the difference in the quote here and here). We all make these little mistakes, to be sure. Although usually not on TV and in the national spotlight, to be sure.

*A practice that might have stopped the Senate from mucking up passage of the recent food safety bill during the lame duck session. As you recall, they passed their version in clear violation of Article 1, Section 7: All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills. For the benefit of Ezra Klein and other liberals, what that passage means is that the Big House of Congress is the one in charge of getting money for Uncle Sam; but the Little House of Congress can nag the Big House about it by changing bills around. At any rate, the Little House didn’t let the Big House go first, and the Big House had to yell at them a little for that until the Little House mumbled that it was sorry and that it wouldn’t do it again.

Hope that helps, Klein: I can’t dumb it down much more.

[UPDATE]: I have been reminded that there is a history, here.

Ezra, there are these things called the Federalist Papers. Maybe they can help you out.

The problem for leftists is not that the Constitution is difficult to figure out, it is that it makes implementation of their agenda difficult to implement.

We the community of persons of the United States, in order to make a really awesome country, make everything fair and equal, keep everything chillin’ 24/7, take away guns, promote universal health care, welfare and foodstamps, yada-yada, blah, blah, blah, so is, like, this Constitution totally cool, or what?

A benevolent American dictator might immediately silence fools like Ezra Klein. Alas, the Constitution stands in the way!

  • kevnad1966

The point isn’t that “nobody knows what the Constitution says because it was written over 100 years ago”………… the point is that Congress has IGNORED the Constitution and the House reading of the document is to REMIND Congress why they are there: We The People!

This takes me back to 20-ish years ago when I was first cutting my political debating teeth on the Internet. The charlatans of the left would seize upon the phrase “well-regulated militia” as some kind of endorsement of gun control by the Founding Fathers, and when it is pointed out that the remainder of that very sentence contraindicates that interpretation of the phrase, they would just cybershrug and philosophize about how inscrutable the Constitution is.

And now those same people are “respected” policy wonks. God help us.

    foreign language to most liberals.

As others have said, Ezzzerahhh has no problem understanding, quoting and promoting the Marxist Manifesto, which is also over 100 years old.

Ezzzzzzerahhhh is going to start up the Leeeeast again.

They don’t care about the Constitution to begin with, they haven’t followed it in many years anyways. so they could care less about the math!

  • romeg

The left would like for people to BELIEVE that because the Constitution was written “…more than a hundred years ago…” that it is now irrelevant and should be ignored. After all, it is a “..living breathing document…” which “…must be adapted to the times…”.

IOW, the usual intellectually vacuous babble for which they are so well known and so thoroughly despised.

  • n2dstormwego

    Ezra,

You?ve really got to think a little harder than that. Spouting such ignorance while in the public eye will make even the marginally educated think that you?re a complete moron. You should, at the very least, work a little harder at projecting an appearance of some intelligence. Purposefully displaying such a half witted countenance makes me wonder if somehow you?ve decided that stupidity must be some sort of virtue. Please? if you?re going to say something that stupid again in public, try practicing in front of a mirror beforehand. Jeeezzzz? I just ate lunch and you?ve gone and made me sick. Now, be a nice boy and run along.

I wonder how many teenagers will now use this same “excuse” when it comes to having to read Shakespeare, Chaucer, Poe, etc.? Funny, people like Ezra seem to understand Marx and his work is over 100 years old.

    Glad you posted that.

Plus he was acting like it was devalued because of its’ age. We aren’t talking about a car. No respect whatsoever for the document or the principles behind it.

mocked via twitter on her remarks about the Boston Tea Party – wasn’t it Andrea Mitchell who started that and tried to back-track? Laugh riot.

Just another fine example of the super-smart, biggest-brains-in-the-world above it all posers trying to impress each other. Man, they’re so cool!

  • Adjoran

He was a fairly obscure leftist until the Short Pants Brigade began touting him as one of their pet “liberals we can have an honest exchange of ideas with” like Yglesias and Sullivan, among others.

This gave WaPo cover to boost his career as a “respected” blogger, leading to Journolist, his rabid and dishonest touting for national health care, and this nonsense.

He’s a far-left hack, and always has been. Nothing more.

  • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

should not be given any credence in political matters whatsoever, period, end of story.

He should be laughed at and mocked every time he appears in public, by conservatives for this and never allowed to live it down.

Time to start giving the left some of their own Alinsky treatment right back at them.

  • 1stRichard

You had me confused, at first the video looked like a professional news service, and then the words of blasphemy and ignorance caught me by surprise. You need a larger warning when posting this stuff, I just got a new keyboard and it almost took its first drink of coffee, horrible.

The way I see it there are two possible outcomes from this Marxist propaganda, not to say it is happening yet but so much as considering this path is beyond blasphemy. The lesser of these two evils would be a violent purging of this ideology, another era of McCarthyism but much worse. All this needs is some tipping point, a trigger for the majority to say enough is enough, and stuff like this is pushing everyone toward that tipping point. Evidence that we are heading toward this tipping point does not come from the right but the left, as of now you can see they are trying to demonize McCarthyism, attempts of damage control and using Alinsky antics on this.

I did say there are two possible outcomes in my opinion, the third option of backing down this path we are on is too much of a distant possibility to consider. Where do you think the road we are on with this will lead, I do not see many other options.

A universal punch line for any joke out there–Ezra Klein. Try it, people will roll around on the floor gasping for breath; it works every time.

I find that the uneducated Englishman is an almost total sceptic about History. I had expected he would disbelieve the Gospels because they contain miracles: but he really disbelieves them because they deal with things that happened 2000 years ago. He would disbelieve equally in the battle of Actium if he heard of it. To those who have had our kind of education, his state of mind is very difficult to realize. To us the Present has always appeared as one section in a huge continuous process. In his mind the Present occupies almost the whole field of vision. Beyond it, isolated from it, and quite unimportant, is something called “The Old Days”–a small, comic jungle in which highwaymen, Queen Elizabeth and knights-in-armour wander about. Then (strangest of all) beyond The Old Days comes a picture of “Primitive Man”. He is “Science”, not “history”, and is therefore felt to be much more real than The Old Days. In other words. the Pre-Historic is much more believed in than the Historic. God in the Dock

… except that in our own Old Days wooden-toothed Pilgrims threaten to push noble Native Americans off the edge of the world unless they promise to pay $24 in pieces of eight to get their names into the Emancipation Proclamation before Ben Franklin drops the atom bomb from his kite onto the witches of Salem.

Oh My God one is as important as the other when it comes to the Constitution.
In fact I am sure both were meant as entertainment mediums and neither should be taken seriously.

If ignorance is bliss, libs must be euphoric! I said that.

  • gunslingr45

I am quite sure Nancy is OLDER than the Constitution. She sure looks it.

Get your tax refund early?mug a GM or Chrysler worker tonight.

  • reason33

If our constitution is old, and therefore hard to understand, what about the 10 commandments? Or, what part of “thou shalt not kill” do you not understand?

This is an example of another mindless liberal comment.

Ezra is just a blogger who got elevated by pMSNBC to sucker the masses into thinking an alleged whiz kid is a book of knowledge on the Constitution let alone congressional bills. Its easy to denouce fools and tools of liberalism. He’s a tool and a liberal hack pretending to be a wonk. If he were really a wonk then he’s say ObamaCare is too expensive and lacks price controls and he’d admit the country won’t save the $138 billion the Obamabots claim, Over half the savings comes from student loan income to the Fed, in other words Obamacare will save us bunk.
