FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Jimmy Webb (D, VA) cuts and runs.

Just couldn’t handle the thought of running again for VA-SEN, apparently – although I’m sure that the lack of money didn’t help much there, either.  Or the fact that Webb was practically guaranteed a messy primary, thanks to his race-related thoughtcrime last year.  What ever it was, this isn’t a surprise, of course: it was obvious last week that Webb didn’t have the right stuff to run again in a year where things weren’t guaranteed to go his way.  I wonder whether enabling the extremist agenda of the exact same people who spit on his troops was worth it to the man?

…Actually, no, I really could care less whether it did or not.

Moe Lane (crosspost)

PS: Please run Tim Kaine for VA-SEN, Democrats. Please, please, please, please, please, please run Tim Kaine.

If the guys on our side insist on sending shirtless photos to girls on Craigslist. It doesn’t do conservatives any good when elected officials behave like stupid teenagers. Then we get the “ha ha ha, family values indeed” garbage from the left.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/02/09/rep-lee-declines-comment-report-claiming-sent-shirtless-photo-craigslist/

I find it more and more difficult to take any elected official seriously.

  • nov2012

I agree that it would be great if Tim Kaine decides to run for Senate and even better if he continues to make remarks like
    – The Obama administration has helped the U.S. economy “turn the corner” after nearly a decade of irresponsible fiscal policies -

  • earlgrey

He actively participates in the destruction of this country and doesn’t have the guts to back up his positions to the voters.

  • earlgrey

GOP district, and hopefully it will be a good lesson to the others.

  • rbdwiggins

What you can take seriously is the House Republican leadership’s ability to swiftly enforce the new zero tolerance policy.

    Family values indeed…

Rep. Lee was gone within four hours of disclosure.

Conversely, Barney Frank and Charles Rangel still wade through the swamp on the other side of the aisle.

And, Sen. Webb makes three on the way to Twelve in 2012.

  • flannery

Dear Mr. Webb – Now that you have confirmed the lameness of your lame duck status, maybe it is now the time to exit the painful DC scene. Then the Governor could appoint someone who is actually representative of the people of Virginia. And maybe someone who did more than talk the talk concerning the troops. Good-bye, leave soon and don’t let the door hit you in the — on your way out.

  • earlgrey

    Cut him loose.

  • Scope

“the guys on our side” when you are no more on our side than the man in the moon. Look at the weak sorry punishment that Rangel got from the Democrat ethics committee. He had to apologize on the floor, and did, but then took back his apology, and said he didn’t do anything wrong. How about the case against Maxine Waters, whose case has been put on the back burner, probably forever. The Democrats have as many ethics problems as the Republicans, but they get an easy pass. I promise there are many more, but, since the Democrats controlled the Congress, only the worst rose to the top.

  • Scope

Why would it be a stupid move on his part if it is pretty safe GOP? He’s a Democrat. He isn’t only from a district in VA, he is a Senator, that covers the state. I’m confused.

  • Scope

there was almost an immediate Facebook page- Draft Tom Perriello. That’s the Rep. from the 5th district, which includes the very liberal Charlottesville, and he couldn’t hold more than one two year term. Then you have Timmy Kaine, the recent, but replaced DNC chair, and former Gov. of VA. On the Republican side here are some names out there-

Declared- George Allen and Jamie Radtke. There is also talk of Bob Marshall, Cory Stewart and Bishop Jackson.

So far, the talk is that there will be most claiming the most conservative role with those other than Allen. As happened in the 5th district (Tom Perriello’s district) there will be a split in the conservative vote, and George Allen, tagged the moderate, will sweep the nomination. That’s how moderate, and Cantor pushed, Robert Hurt won the 5th district nomination. That’s politics folks.

  • belcatar

I’m certainly not on the side of Waters and Rangel! I’m not quite sure what I said to give you the impression I was against conservatives. If you can point it out, I’ll at least have the opportunity to defend myself.

But if it’ll clear things up, I’ll say for the record that I am pro-life, pro-military, and and I strongly support any efforts to shrink the size of government. I supported Paul LePage for governor of Maine, Jason Levesque for ME-02, and the Constitution Party candidate for President. I couldn’t cast my vote for John McCain because he isn’t much of a conservative.

I have no idea how I might be confused for someone who had anything nice to say about Rangel or Waters, or that nitwit Jefferson with the money in his freezer, or any other corrupt jerk from either party.

I consider anyone who opposes Obamacare, the Stimulus, TARP, and all those other expensive, dumb federal programs on “our side”.

  • takemccain2

I remember the reports of your inappropriate comments to President Bush at the White House.

You were a classless Senator and a classless human being.

    You wont’ be missed.

  • IJB

Frankly, I hope they get their way on this – Perriello would be a *seriously* weak statewide candidate (much worse even than Kaine), and will guarantee this seat is a GOP pick-up.

  • powertothepeople
  • belcatar

It’s good that the matter was settled quickly. At least the guy stepped down and didn’t blather on with ridiculous denials or excuses…as certain former Presidents who did much worse while also breaking fraternization rules without getting into any trouble at all did.

And three is a good start. If only there was some way to make Olympia Snowe number four!

  • proudmarinemom

never answered emails, refused to meet with constituents, sulked and slinked and hid for five years, only emerging to rubber-stamp every bill sent up by Pelosi and to bash Bush.

This seat will be a GOP pickup. Even here in progressive Northern Virginia, people have had it with Obama.

While Allen may not be the best candidate, he would beat Perriello. Let’s hear more about Jamie Radtke.

  • bhjets

Provide cover for socialists and then cut and run. And the man fancies himself a patriot.

  • rickbull

with the shirtless pic sent to a female advertiser on craigslist. Chris Lee is a NY Republican Rep.

Sorry, I think you got sucked into a thread hijack.

  • rickbull

was easy to spot: he was pulling the lever with his right hand and holding his nose with his left . . .

I have a healthy distrust for anyone that retires from the military and comes out a Democrat.. but that is just me.

  • rbdwiggins

and she is a Republican, albeit a liberal-Republican.

Three is in reference to likely Republican pick-ups in the Senate.

So far, there’s Conrad, McCaskill, and now, Webb.

Twelve in 2012 is a plan the NRSCC should begin to employ now. Target the most vulnerable Senate Democrats with the goal of flipping at least twelve seats in 2012.

  • jimmyneutron

that the local PC and voters take a look at all of the conservative candidates and pick one that they really like. Then run that one in the primary instead of 3 or 4 conservatives so that the conservative vote is not split. I haven’t had time to do much research, but I have faint memories of George Allen that make me think that he is not the most conservative or best candidate for Virginia.

  • belcatar

I wanted to lump her in with them because she’s disappointed me too many times. Of course, I know there’s a better chance for Barry Goldwater’s cleverly hidden clone to emerge and become President than for an actual conservative to beat Snowe.

  • rivahmitch

and down here in the tidewater, they’re pushing for the resurrection of (one-term) Glenn Nye. He’s a better candidate for the enemy, because he did finally (with strong input from his constituents and with much agonizing) vote against Obamacare but that’s probably doomed him in any Dem state-wide primary…. I love to watch these guys squirm….

  • edintexas

To the extent that he was discussing a Republican Representative from the Buffalo, NY area who resigned because of a moral lapse, in a post about a Democrat Senator from Virginia who has made the decision not to run for re-election because he might not even win his party’s primary (much less re-election), he probably thought he was sufficiently on-topic.

  • edintexas

Perfect line, applicable to Conservative voters as well as Republican voters.

  • Scope

When I heard that someone set up a facebook page, within hours of Webb’s announcement, to draft Perriello, I had to laugh. It would not be unheard of for Perriello to have had someone from his former staff to set that page up. I’ve wondered what Perriello has been doing since he lost his re-election, and I believe we now know. He has been just biding his time for the 2012 Senate run. The funny part about Perriello is that he was rejected in a district where the highest population areas are Liberal, such as Charlottesville. If he couldn’t win just that district, he can’t win statewide. Everyone knows of his close ties to Soros and John Podesta, and that information will intensify if he runs. The local talk show host, who had Perriello on his show once a month has warned that Perriello does have the ability to talk out of both sides of his mouth. When you ask him a direct question, you are left with wondering what he said, as he sounds like he supports both sides. Example, he said that he never voted for any of the Obama budgets. Problem is Obama never passed any budget. He is a slick talker and mover.

  • Raven

I happen to agree, as do quite a few folks.
Too bad for him his side doesn’t even tolerate the idea.

  • egghead

I was very angry with Webb when he insulted President Bush at the WH meet and greet for new members. It was crass and uncalled for. He does have a reputation of being a nasty piece of work if you disagree with him. But he is no coward–Marine Officers do not win the Navy Cross in Vietnam by being cowards.

And he clearly does not relish the in-crowd, junior-high clique crap of modern politics. For that he may be praised.

  • Scope

we need to find a strong candidate to run and hold that seat. No more John McCain’s though.

  • Doc Holliday
  • powertothepeople

and it does not work. While he was, most likely, a brave man during Vietnam, that still does not mean he is not now a coward. I served multiple tours in Vietnam as a Marine CO. I was in the war from almost day one and did not leave until almost every Marine was gone. I received many awards and was wounded twice, I was no coward. But if I acted like Webb has over the last years, I would have no ground to stand on should someone call me a coward. The leftist platform in itself is a cowards platform. They are scared to tell the welfare folks they must stop sucking the tit of this country dry, they are afraid to tell leftist militant groups to shove off, now is not the time to worry about whether or not people drink from plastic bottles, etc. He has lived his political life as a coward, he has spoken to people like a coward knowing he never had to back up his nonsense and there was little they could do to him, and he lived his political life as a coward pandering to all the special interest groups out there in order to keep his seat.

He was and is a military hero, was a true man in that war, had guts and bravery out the wazzooo back then, but he gave up all those admirable characteristics to join a scum bag party and to be a cowardly puppet of that party. He deserves respect for his time serving this country in uniform but past that he deserves nothing but contempt.

  • rbdwiggins

Sen. Jon Kyl is retiring, and will not seek reelection in 2012.

But the end-result remains the same. We still need to field a strong conservative candidate from the great state of Arizona.

No more mavericks, and certainly, no loose cannons.

  • earlgrey

I have I think really improved as far as blog etiquette, but clearly flubbed this one.

My true feelings on Senator Webb is that he is a coward. He voted for an extreme liberal agenda and he should have the guts to defend it.

  • mikeevergreen

Not sure why, but he didn’t have his usual hefty war chest.

  • williamjameson

and I’ll add that too much diversity has sunk into schools so that some under educated types get into colleges. Its one thing to give preference over race but risky to curve the entrance requirement scores. If someone can make the grade they deserve an equal shot but how low do we want to go just because liberal groups think we can water down everything. They do it for the votes and to back off multicultural groups. For instance Harry Reid thinks we can lower the education requirements for doctors and nurses……..your Doc first Harry.

Jim Webb is a calamity of gaffes and foolish comments. He knew the far left was out to get him too……its fall the noobish leader or be cast aside just like Bart Stupak and other dems who tried to buck the godless secular mule of liberalism.

“After a full generation of such debate, WASP elites have fallen by the wayside and a plethora of government-enforced diversity policies have marginalized many white workers. The time has come to cease the false arguments and allow every American the benefit of a fair chance at the future.

I have dedicated my political career to bringing fairness to America?s economic system and to our work force, regardless of what people look like or where they may worship. Unfortunately, present-day diversity programs work against that notion, having expanded so far beyond their original purpose that they now favor anyone who does not happen to be white”

  • proudmarinemom

?After a full generation of such debate, WASP elites have fallen by the wayside and a plethora of government-enforced diversity policies have marginalized many white workers. The time has come to cease the false arguments and allow every American the benefit of a fair chance at the future.”

Or: “Smart people who work hard should be given the same chances as other smart people who work hard.”

  • williamjameson

and I don’t see a problem with them though I’m against his Senate record and welcome his last day in office. Why do you dislike his stance on diversity?

    Who wrote the second quote?

Why exactly do you want the Alvin Greene’s of any race to get the same chance as others who are better qualified? Its like some people think just because someone wants to be an Astronaut means they should fly to the stars. Do you want someone with a lower IQ operating on your body?

The norms for education should be consistent with the norms of societies expectations. If a student can’t make the grade and meet entrance requirements and that less educated person gets into a better school it displaces a better qualified student……..and that better qualified student could be black, white or latino and so on. We have colleges with lesser entrance requirements to give lesser educated types an education they can complete.

Moe can you tell me if any of the potential VA senatorial hopefuls have actually declared themselves as candidates. Our local Republican Committee in Northern Virginia are inviting George Allen to social events. I have not heard them mention any other Republican candidates. Should they not be inviting all of them? I know of Jamie Radtke and Cory Stewart. I don’t think Bob Marshall has decided yet. Any info will help.
