Abortion clinic reform passes Virginia Senate.

The bill requires that facilities that perform more than five first trimester abortions per month be subject to the same regulations as hospitals, which will hopefully help keep down the kind of abuses that were documented here by Live Action (and, much more horrifyingly, the atrocities committed in Pennsylvania by Kermit Gosnell).  This rather commonsense consistency in regulating abortions would be normally out of reach of the pro-life movement, as the Virginia Senate is 22/18 Democratic/Republican: however, two Democrats switched their votes after a parliamentary procedure forced them to take a stand on the bill.  This made the vote 20/20, thus allowing Lt. Governor Bill Bolling to break the tie.

Because elections matter.

People may also remember that this has been building up since August of 2010, when Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli ruled that abortion facilities could be regulated as if they were hospitals – which ruling helped set up this bill.

Because elections matter.

The bill now goes to Governor Bob McDonnell, who will sign it.

Because elections matter.

If Roe can’t be over turned in the near future, then we can pass regulations that will cause abortion mills to close down.

    No truce on saving lives.

Especially, in this case, the voters who got involved and made sure that good candidates ran and won in the primaries, as well as the general election.

    Well done, Virginians.

Its good to know that there are states where the minority sticks around to do their job, and the governor doesn’t shirk his reponsibilities either.

A few more guys like this governor, and we’ll get things done in many states. There IS hope.

Abortion clinics have been sliding under the radar for years regarding the quality of care that is being provided. I’m glad to see this state take some action to prevent this from continuing I hope that the state agencies will take their duty to safeguard the citizens of Virginia from unscrupulous practitioners such as Dr. Gosnell seriously.

And we got this one very right.

Great job Virginia and kudos to Bill for casting that vote!

Next up – Jim Webb’s seat.

I urge every Virginian out there to get involved. Support your favorite candidate in the primary and which ever Republican wins that, throw your enthusiasm and your support behind them.

Rest in Peace: Dr. Bernard N. Nathanson
    in activism in memorium pro-life
The pro-life community lost one of its most devoted members on Sunday, former abortionist turned pro-life activist Dr. Bernard N. Nathanson.

Dr. Nathanson was the director and narrator of The Silent Scream, a film that showed an unborn baby on an ultrasound crying out in pain and discomfort as it was aborted. The film was a boon for the pro-life movement, seen by millions of Americans, including President Ronald Reagan, who showed it at the White House.

He also directed, filmed, and narrated Eclipse of Reason, which depicted a late-term abortion.

Dr. Nathanson was not always pro-life; he was one of the founders of NARAL, and he served as their spokesman and medical adviser. It is estimated that he performed around 75,000 abortions before his conversion to the pro-life movement. He was convinced by ultrasound technology that unborn babies are indeed human life, which lead to his argument:

[Nathanson] began to develop what he called the ?vector theory of life.? By this he meant that from the time of conception, the unborn child has a self-directed force of life that, if not interrupted, will lead to the birth of a human baby. He knew this was not ?potential life,? as the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade.

As he wrote in 1974, “[t]here is no longer serious doubt in my mind that human life exists within the womb from the very onset of pregnancy.”

Having performed thousands of abortions, Nathanson was able to describe the mindset of an abortionist:

?[I]cy; conscienceless; remorselessly perverting his medical skills; defiling his ethical charge; and helping, nay seducing, with his clinical calm, his oh-so-comforting professionalism, women into the act that comes closest to self-slaughter.?

Dr. Nathanson authored two pro-life books, Aborting America and The Hand of God, in which he exposed the lies of the abortion industry, including the falsified numbers of alleged illegal abortions before Roe v. Wade.

He later converted to Christianity and regretted his past life as an athiest deeply, saying ?I am one of those who helped usher in this barbaric age.?
