New Romney Ad: “Bump in the road.”

[UPDATE]: Nice take on this by one of our diarists.

It’s strong; I thought that it might have been a bit long before watching, but there’s nothing in there that doesn’t need to be.  Mitt Romney‘s campaign came up with a good one, here.  One with a theme that should be repeated by the eventual candidate, at every opportunity.

Via Jim Geraghty. Transcript (via email; no link, sorry) after the fold: note that the transcript doesn’t include the signs, which give a pretty good cross-section of the victims of this horrible economy that President Obama and his Democratic party has been inflicting on the rest of us (from either 2009 or 2007, depending on how you’re scoring things).  Granted, they’re also inflicting it on themselves – but then again, it’s their fault in the first place, so I’m not feeling entirely obliged to be upset on their behalf.

It’s a good beginning to a “He’s out of touch” campaign theme.

  • jeffstag

There’s a lot you can do with the “out of touch” theme. A family in need around their beat-up sedan with the president’s speech urging them to trade in for a hybrid or a line at a soup kitchen with the president’s line complaining about the price of arugala come to mind…

But it’s good because it’s true. If it was a lie it would seem hollow as many of those prez. ads do. All of the GOP candidates need to drive this point home. Obama’s policy’s are so bad that they are easy pickens’ for anybody running.

  • johnt

the economy on themselves. That never happens with or to a Ruling Class, and every ape in civil service, and certainly in higher legislative and administrative office, as well as the zombies of the media, exclude themselves rightly or wrongly from collapse. The higher the office the richer the spoils and shield from their malfeasance.

  • billinsuwanee

Good commercial. Too bad it’s for Robamaney.

  • http://theminorityreportblog.com Repair_Man_Jack

    an add entitled “Animal Farm”.

The voiceover Some Animals are more equal than others…

Scroll a List of big-time Dems getting ObamaCare waivers..

Conclude with. If there are two Americas instead of one, it’s because people like Brack obama want it that way.

  • throwback59

has a certain “Walking Dead” feel to it, but I like it.
    -Let the games begin.

  • arnd

I hope these themes are hammered hard and directed not just at Obama, but also the Obama-favoring media.

Chris Mathews, David Gregory, Anderson Cooper, et al. made their 2008 preference clear. What does it say about these talking heads when they prefer 15 percent unemployment under Obama to 8 or less unemployment under Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, or another Republican?

Voting for Obama in ’08 was a vote against “hate.” What does voting for Obama in ’12 mean?

  • renny

and a line at the unemployment office reporting not feeling any tingle at all.

  • azaeroprof

I’m not a Romney fan, but this ad is pure genius. Must give Mitt credit for hiring good people.

Two quick points with respect to this ad:

    1. An ad this good would be better suited closer to the election.
    2. If Romney doesn’t win the GOP nomination, whoever does should buy the rights to this commercial and photoshop their own name in.

  • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil truth

Though I don’t quite get the ending with the messages blowing away – what’s that supposed to mean?

And Romney’s logo looks too much like Obama’s for my taste.

Nonetheless, first bite does go to the Romney campaign.

  • http://seekingliberty.wordpress.com fmaidment

…but it’s going to ring hollow when people are reminded how closely Romney’s policies in Mass and current views match up with Obama’s policies and views, particularly on health care and the environment.

Give Romney credit, though. This is a powerful ad, one that could easily be cut shorter and made more exciting for a less politically involved audience to digest.

  • smitch61

Too bad I don’t care for the guy as president. Oh well, should he win the primary I will hold my nose and vote for him…. I have to do that a lot. As a matter of fact, the only time I left the voting booth with any emotional investment was when I voted twice for Reagan.

    At the Republican Leadership Conference

    http://www.rlc2011.com/agenda/

    Romney is speaking right???

Already confirmed to speak at RLC 2011: Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Jim DeMint, Marsha Blackburn, Bobby Jindal, George P. Bush, Mary Matalin, David Vitter, Rodney Alexander, Bill Cassidy, Jeff Landry, Steve Scalise, Tony Perkins, Star Parker, Erick Erickson, Chris Widener, James Strock, David Bossie and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

Hmmmm, must be a mis-print – No Romney or Pawlenty? These guys are Republican, right???

Looks like Erick is a speaker – maybe he knows if Mitt or Tim will show up.

  • chbroussard

The ad is worth whatever Romney had to pay for it. If any of these candidates follow Redstate, they might also want to contact jeffstag and Repair_Man_Jack. Both of those guys had a couple of real good ideas for future ads also.

  • Doc Holliday

but it seemed to be missing the conservatism. Maybe it is just me.

  • banzaibob

The same woman in the wheel chair being pushed over a cliff is sitting in a hospital talking to her doctor about the hip surgery she just completed. She turns to an unseen person and asks if he has taken care of the bill. Next we zoom in to see it is her 4 year old great-grandson using a credit card he will need to pay once he starts working.

  • aesthete

The underlying premise is that electing a politician will cause a sea change and restore the jobs. It’s a well-produced ad, but could have easily been made by Democrats in the recession during the Bush administration, or while Reagan/Volcker were dealing with stagflation at the beginning of his term.

Still, it’s well in keeping with Romney’s status as a “fixer” type.

  • fmaidment

You mean like the guy who “fixed” my air conditioning by bypassing the safety system instead of clearing the drain clog?

That’s kinda’ what Romneycare reminds me of, actually. Spend a lot of money while punting the real problem down the road.

  • izoneguy

Have the 4 year old doing the hip surgery on his grandma…..

There will be no doctors left after ObamaCare gets fully implemented.
There might be some govt. doctors left over working for the prisons.

  • lukematthews

I would like to see an ad with Obama laughing about shovel ready jobs not being so shovel ready. Then intersperse people talking about our bad economy with his little one liners and goofiness mixed in. It would continue with the underlying meme that we are all just widgets for their experiments as well as the image of NerObama fiddling while America burns.

  • toothpick

It’s a very polished ad, high production values…but what is the message exactly? “Obama sucks”?

I guess that’s a good start, but Mr. Romney, why would you suck any less? What would you do differently? What is it that Obama did that caused all of these “bumps in the road” to become unemployed / underemployed / struggling to make ends meet like never before, and what would you do to change that?

Sorry, but I’m looking for someone who can articulate a *conservative* vision, not just complain (albeit correctly) that the guy now running things is doing a gawd-awful job.

  • banzaibob

Look-alikes in a casino blowing money left and right. Obama then laughs how he embezzled the money from the shovel ready projects to gamble.

Break to Pelosi outside the back of the casino asking the “Chinese Loan Sharks” for more money and Reid is strong arming some kid to sign for the loan.

I gotta give it to the Romney video team. I love how this message will be able to be used by anyone who is unhappy with the President. This is the kind of ad that can really cause President Obama’s poll numbers to fall if we get enough people to watch it.

Southern Republican Leadership Conference Straw Poll: Mitt Romney
    for 2012?

If Republicans are stupid enough to nominate Mitt Romney for President in 2012, Barack Obama will win.

At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference this weekend, (2010) they took a straw poll. Mitt Romney edged out Ron Paul by one vote as the favorite for 2012. The straw poll field included Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Gary Johnson, Srah Palin, Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Pence, Romney and Rick Santorum.

Do these Republicans not realize if Romney wins the Republican primary, healthcare will be removed as part of the ammo against Barack Obama since Romney oversaw the same types of healthcare reform which are now failing in Massachusetts? Remember, Obamacare was modeled after Romneycare. While I have defended Massachusetts through the 10th Amendment for their healthcare system within their state borders, it is a failure and it neutralizes any attacks on Obama during the campaign.

Surely we have a Ronald Reagan waiting in the wings? Please step forward if you are that man or woman.

    AP 2006

“Romney Warns of Potential ?Bumps in the Road? for Health Care Law”

I wish commercials would focus more on specifics. Information versus imagination.

  • victrola

If the campaign is about the economy, jobs, and out of control Washington spending, we win. If we get distracted and make the election about other hobby horse issues, we lose.

Romney’s biggest appeal is he will come off to the average American as a “Mister Fix-It”, someone who has the ability to turn things around, no other candidate resonates competence like Romney does. I don’t plan on voting for him in the primary, but I’m wiling to overlook his flaws because I see him being strong in a general election, and on the big picture issues that matter, I see him being “good enough” with respect to judges, taxes, national defense and spending.

Of all the declared candidates running, I have zero doubt that Obama fears Romney the most. At the end of the day, beating Obama is much more important to me than finding a pure Republican to nominate.

  • chbroussard

my first thought was that all our concerns about the economy are just out there blowing in the wind because Obama isn’t listening to the people and their economic plight.

  • charliesalmanack

…and it highlights exactly what our side ought be doing as much as possible during the primaries: taking it to Obama.

The MSM is going to try and turn this into a bar brawl amongst Republicans early on….and sooner or later the elbows will get sharp as this contest heats up.

But the next several months is a golden time for all of our candidates to spend as much time as possible hitting Obama on as many news outlets as possible.

Again, nice job on this ad Romney team

  • http://www.redstate.com/jcrestonm jcrestonm

totally agree. He should save this one (and others like it) for around September and October 2012

  • Jewels

there were more people in the commercial. 100+ rather than a half dozen or so.

Also, more variety in the voices at the end. I could recognize a few repeats.

Other than that it was good. Message was spot on. Directed well. Just needed a little more impact.

  • MassExile

    Powerful stuff…

  • partyof1

He can talk about the low taxes in Massachusetts.

And how Romneycare has lowered health care costs there and how the cost to taxpayers has stayed within expectations.

And how Massachusetts leads the nation in job creation.

And how his policies reduced the number of abortions and ensured that taxpayer money would not pay for abortions.

    You know, stuff like that.

  • peg_c

I’m still growing to detest Romney. I mean MORE than before.

  • peg_c

Mark Levin’s been ripping Romney every which way. He’d still vote for him over Beelzebama and so would we all. Where did that get us in ’08? Romney’s record is dreadful and that’s without his new global warming/ethanol insanity.

Klavan is right – Mitt is the Death Star.
