Operation Fast and Furious’ fast and furious unraveling.

So.  Somebody in the Obama administration is telling lies to the House Oversight/Government Reform Committee. That’s not smart.  When people tell lies to House committees, people go to jail.

Background on this: this is all about the BATF/Justice Department Operations Gunrunner and Fast & Furious, which were originally purported to be methods by which [illegal purchases of] guns could be detected and arrested*.  However, they instead turned into methods by which Mexican drug cartels were able to get their hands on [illegally-purchased semi-automatic] weapons. You see, the problem was that while selling the guns to middlemen (‘straw purchasers’) [who intend to sell the guns illegally] is in itself a standard ‘sting’ operation, somehow the guns continued on down the supply chain until they resurfaced in Mexico.  The end result was inevitable: somebody used a BATF-supplied gun to kill Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

As you can imagine, nobody in the BATF or DoJ wishes to be officially responsible for selling criminals the guns that said criminals used to kill federal agents, so there has been a remarkably comprehensive drive to stonewall the investigation; alas for the administration, the House of Representatives flipped last November.  And new Chairman Darrell Issa is very keen to get to the bottom of this.

Hence, the lying.  But who is lying?

It’s an interesting question, but let me summarize these emails released by Issa’s office: the Acting Director and Deputy Director for the ATF were getting weekly briefings; ATF’s Deputy Assistant Director for Field Operations got at least one special briefing; and the Acting Director was at one point watching the live feed of guns being sold to the middlemen.  So I think that we can safely assume that the standard ‘overzealous underlings’ defense is not likely to fly…

PS: You can read Issa’s/Grassley’s report here.  ‘Scathing’ doesn’t begin to cover it.

*It is also widely believed to be a government operation by which gun sellers could be surreptitiously and deniably harassed by the gun-grabber faction in the Obama administration, but never mind that right now.

  • Locked and Loaded

This whole fiasco runs counter to common sense, the rule of law, the missions of the DOJ and BATFE, and respect for national sovereignty, that of Mexico and the USA. It indicates corruption in everybody involved and an inexcusable failure of leadership.

  • blooch

The plot thickens if Issa doesn’t go wobbly. Watching the battle of the government Branches on CSPAN is starting to get interesting.

I get the sense that somewhere a green-light was signalled, and soon the Justice Department will be more forthcoming with things it does not wish to disclose. Holder gone by the end of the year?

  • gawken

it will turn out that, according to them, nobody authorized the opereration, I guess it just sort of spontaneously happened…if which case, Holder should resign/be fired for incompetence.

Jason Chavetz was very impressive, and effective today. Lawd, I hope he runs against Hatch..

  • toothpick

    Or maybe Watergate?

I do indeed hope Darryl Issa remains stubborn and persistent. He could do some real damage to the administration. And a real service to the country (but I repeat myself).

  • standingonthewall

At this rate, the SEIU and friends will be “keeping an eye on him, his family, his home…

Even if a new “Deep Throat” should surface, do any of us believe the WaPo or Pravda East/West [NY & LA Times] would even report it? Nah, doesn’t fit their mission statement: Protect 0 at all costs.

  • Red_in_SC

Given Obama’s massive ego and control tendencies, it would be hard to imagine that he gives any lesser beings, even Holder, free rein. If Issa can connect the dots to the White House, Obama may find the temperature in the Oval Office soaring to global warming proportions.

I live in Texas. The border has become a war zone. Shots fired from Mexico into America are not unusual. Securing the border isn’t some exercise in futility. It’s not an exageration to say American lives are in danger – not only Border Patrol agents (God Bless them for all they do), but average citizens going about their business when gunfire breaks out. Until Mexico gets their act together, I’ll take that moat, that wall, and the National Guard. Send the DOJ bigwigs to man the border for a month and see what their empty headed liberal policies acheive in the real world.

You need to remember that this involves BATF(E). There have, over the years, been a couple of attempts to dissolve the BATF because of a propensity to disregard the law and Constitution in conducting operations. These efforts failed because the Congress thought the BATF personnel should be provided jobs in another Federal Law Enforcement Agency, and no other Agency would take the BATF personnel.

Ignoring the law is nothing new to BATF. During the Clinton Administration (that is Governor Clinton) I was in a gun shop in Arkansas. I observed two people using a laptop to record data from an FFL’s “Bound Book”. As I knew both to be BATF Special Agents, I asked the dealer if they were conducting an investigation. He answered they were not, they came into his shop about once each month and recorded all firearms transactions since their last visit. I pointed out that this sort of activity was not legal, to which the dealer responded “I have a business to run and a family to feed.”

Those seditious organizations you mentioned no longer control the “news cycle”. IMO they haven’t dealt in “news” in many years now. Other than local stuff, often they have covered “olds”, stories others have broken and they have been dragged kicking and screaming to coverage.

That the President is *responsible* goes without question — it’s his job and the central point of the oath he took — but whether he *knew* in any more than the most general sense is debatable. Day by day we see more evidence that Obama is no more than the face of this administration, a dupe entranced by the flattery of those who hold his strings but who has no conception of what is really going on around him and only a dim (though prideful) understanding of what is being done in his name and over his signature.

that the chosen one was unaware of the operation, I agree with you. And I can’t wait to see the explanations…..

When I was stationed at Oberschleissheim Hubschrauberlandeplatz, about 5 miles from both Munich and Dachau, West Germany from December of 1960 through June of 1962. I was the Battalion Public Information photographer for the 8th Transportation Battalion, Lt. Helicopters. One of the things I did while there was photocopy about 40 or so black and white photographs of the liberation of that death camp. The naked, emaciated bodies depicted were not distinguishable by faith, just a common fate – a merciless death – even though some still drew breath, they were amongst the walking dead. While I would love to see the “Silent Majority” rise up as they did in the election’s of 1980/84 and then again in 1994. (That one did a lot of good two years later, didn’t it.) I said it during the Clinton administration: “It’s coming.”. That was during the Janet Reno/Jamie Garelick “Actions” to “Save the Children” at Waco, Texas (by killing them), and at Ruby Ridge, Idaho (by killing a mother with a babe in arms in order to capture someone who may (repeat, may) have violated the minimum rifle barrel length by 1/16th of an inch). To what “It” was I referring? The revolution by Americans to return our country back to it’s constitutional roots. Now, much to my sad recognition, the “Bloodless Coup” has not yet been confronted by the “Non-Bloodless Counter Revolution”. Am I happy over this apparent inevitability? Hell no! Am I resigned to it’s inevitability? Sadly, reluctantly, disgustedly, I’m beginning to see no other way out of this decent into Fascism. Benito Mussolini would be proud of GE, PHILLIPS, GENERAL MOTORS, CHRYSLER, (or anything run and/or funded/controled by George Soros) et al, and their conjoining with big government to curtail competition from their competitors. God preserve us. (He knows the current administration won’t.) I say that as a not overtly religious man, but “I Am An American” who firmly believes in the founding principles of our country, first, last and always. Always aim just below the helmet. No matter what color it is. According to a dear friend of mine: “Paranoia is what they call perceptivity, before you’re proven right”.
