DSCC chair Patty Murray tries to get her some Koch campaign cash.

Apparently, Satan was screening his calls.

I can almost understand why DSCC chair Sen. Patty Murray would try to hit up the Koch Companies for ‘five figures’ (read: the maximum allowed by federal election campaign finance law).  First off, Sen. Murray is not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer (she’d almost have to be, given that Murray actually left a voice message as well as sent a letter*).  Second, what’s the worse that the Koch Companies are going to do?  Say no?

Well.  There’s no, and then there’s no.

Below the fold is the letter that the Koch Companies wrote back, and which they have also helpfully put on their website.  It does not really require much in the way of elaboration, or anything else except a certain aesthetic appreciation for the way that its author (Philip Ellender) manages to call Senator Murray (to say nothing of her party) a vicious, stupid hypocrite without once actually using any of those words.  I have spent some time trying to learn how to be elegantly rude to people who richly deserve it, and let me tell you: Ellender has the right skill set.  Enjoy.

Senator Patty Murray, Chair
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee

Dear Senator Murray:

For many months now, your colleagues in the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee leadership have engaged in a series of disparagements and ad hominem attacks about us, apparently as part of a concerted political and fundraising strategy. Just recently, Senator Reid wrote in a DSCC fundraising letter that Republicans are trying to “force through their extreme agenda faster than you can say ‘Koch Brothers.’”

So you can imagine my chagrin when I got a letter from you on June 17 asking us to make five-figure contributions to the DSCC. You followed that up with a voicemail* indicating that, if we contributed heavily enough, we would garner an invitation to join you and other Democratic leaders at a retreat in Kiawah Island this September.

I’m hoping you can help me understand the intent of your request because it’s hard not to conclude that DSCC politics have become so cynical that you actually expect people whom you routinely denounce to give DSCC money.

It is troubling that private citizens taking part in the discourse have become the targets of White House and DSCC fundraising missives, and we would certainly encourage you to rethink that approach. Ultimately, I expect voters will see through that and will weigh the issues on the merits alone. But in the meantime, if you could provide me some insight on what exactly you are asking of us and why, I would be most grateful.

Sincerely,
Philip Ellender

*I suppose that it is possible that Senator Murray simply picks up the telephone when told to and reads the words that her staff puts in front of her when told to, without ever actually thinking about what those words actually mean, or who ends up getting them (after all, this could have been an automated call).  Whether that scenario would be an actual improvement is debatable; particularly if it was automated…

It is so sad there is so much corruption in Washington State to keep re-electing her.

Who in the hell would want to be on an island with Democratic leaders?

  • blooch

on Kiawah Island of Dr. Moreau–with a touch of Democrat “Deliverance”, of course–are running through my head.

of her type are far more adept at asking for money through a car window.

This is just one item of a bunch of good stuff from them:

What nerve to ask for a handout from people who are constantly harrased by the democrats. The koch brothers are the devil according toall the democratic points I read.Send them a dollar and thank them for thinking about you. What nerve.Well thats the democrats for you.

  • hidlins

to send her even a dollar! If thousands of people send her one dollar then she wouldget more than she deserves! What were the people of her state thinking when they re-elected her??? The only thing that accomplishes is to keep the postman busy!

“I suppose that it is possible that Senator Murray simply picks up the telephone when told to and reads the words that her staff puts in front of her when told to, without ever actually thinking about what those words actually mean,”

Yes, but did she use the word “extreme”?

“I always use the word ‘extreme’, I met with the caucus and that’s what they instructed me to say” – Chuck Schumer

What makes you believe the Lefties of Washington state ever think prior to, or in the act of, voting? Not to mention the ability of Kings County (Seattle) to belatedly “find” * a few more than the number of votes necessary for the Democrat to win a close contest.

    * For example Kings County voting officials “found in a warehouse” about 700 previously uncounted votes for Democrat Gregoire after either the 1st or 2d recount which had left the Republican candidate for Governor leading by a bit over 300 votes.

Great concept! I’m going to work on that so I’m geared up for holidays-with-a-few-of-our-lib-relatives.

Nice company you got there, would be a shame if anything happened to it?

  • romeg

    Just Wow!

I wonder if Scott Pelly will be covering this item.

  • romeg

You failed to include ‘Extortion’ in the list of categories under which this item should be posted.

  • bclare

The Kock folks should have contacted Fox News and get them to put up the money for the donation… then bring Grif Jenkins as their date for the weekend to Kiawah. Oh to be a fly on the wall for that one.

and had a lot of difficulty finding unbiased print media while I was there. One point was made very apparent : When Washingtonians do not like something, they go after it with a vengence. Even though cars are essential, parking in D T Seattle is GangSter expensive. the D T parking meters only took Crdit Cards on WaterFront. No real surprise hearing this as most seemed nice enough, but VENAL when even smelling conservative ideas. ( conversing with locals is SO TELLING, is it not?) Could it be that this was just one of many on The list , and proofreading said list was “Not My Job” for anyone but the Janitor? What was it to Him/HER?

  • ludah

This is one Washingtonian that agrees with what you are saying. Patty Murray is as dumb as a fence post and there are far too many left wing liberals in this state. I have a bumper sticker that has a picture of obummer and it asks, “Does this *ss make my car look bigger”? I frequently have people showing me that their IQ is “one”. It however makes my day and results in me having a good laugh.

  • lizaz

First insult you, then ask for money?? We lived in WA for 13 yrs. and “not the sharpest knife in the drawer” is an understatement, big time!! And so in these days of government “austerity” the dems have a big “party” planned on some island??? Just more proof, they don’t get it!!! Here’s hoping most of them will be looking for work come Nov 2012. This is just UNBELIEVABLE!!!

chastise people for going to Las Vegas for fun,
and then hold a big fund raiser on a paradise vacation island.
Why people can’t see this hypocrosy is beyond me.

  • soljerblue

My Dad, rest his honest soul, used to say that diplomacy is the ability to tell someone you don’t like to gotohell and make them feel happy to make the trip.

Ellender’s letter comes as close to that as anything I’ve ever seen.

    Right ON!

  • willhen50

Since the Koch brothers have been so kind to respond with their request, at least the republicans should do is ask Soros, he always likes to help a “good cause.” Better yet ask Soros to come to a TEA Party…….
