Almost the Ultimate Carter Moment in Damascus.

Here is a free hint to all appointed members of the Obama administration: if Syrian ‘loyalists’ follow up today’s attack against the US Embassy in Damascus…

Protesters loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad briefly broke into the US embassy in Damascus on Monday and security guards used live ammunition to prevent them storming the French embassy, diplomats said.

…by actually seizing the embassy?  If that happens, start updating your resumes.  And don’t bother with sending them along to Democratic House Members (and any Democratic Senator up for re-election in 2012): we’ll be throwing them out of office, too.

Fair warning.

Moe Lane (crosspost)

PS: I’d like to know what the rules of engagement are for our embassy guards in Damascus, too.

Return fire at will, until threat eliminated. Contact immediate superiors to request reinforcements. Persue at will. Contact Washington D.C., when 3:00 A. M. local time rolls around.

    a Limbaugh broadcast, that’s it.
On the other hand, is it possible that maybe Assad is rubbing our nose in it, knowing that the Plouffe/Jarreret brain trust [barf] may not even tell The O what to say. Perhaps we’ll get a dramatic throat clearing, combined with a media ass covering.
Except for Fox News, which doesn’t do news.
Either way, O is too busy fighting the real, existential enemy, Republicans.

From what I’ve read about him, Obama actually made a pretty good pick here. Ford doesn’t seem to be a tea-sipping toadie, and apparently he’s at least listening to, if not outright encouraging, the opposition to Assad. Republicans have been calling for his recall for weeks, but I think it’s more because they strongly oppose the legitimacy conferred on the regime by our embassy, and the perception that Assad is trying to use Ford.

Now Obama may be forced to make a quick decision to avoid hunkering down in a corner of the situation room watching our soldiers extract his fat from the fire. I don’t think Ford is the kind of guy who will let classified info fall into the wrong hands if it comes to that, but, again, he’s at the mercy of Dithering Dick to a certain degree. If this goes badly, watch for Ford to go under the bus.

to keep them from falling into the hands of the attackers.

    What?

Good idea, other than that the {illegitimately born} diplomats would probably demand hazard pay just for being near their guards and all…

Those folks should hide… and call 911 back in the U.S.

Stay on the line until the police show up.
