The Great Fast & Furious… Fast & Furious Data-Dump.

The fact that the sordid details about Operation Fast & Furious (short edition: the federal government allowed guns to be illegally resold to Mexican narco-terrorists, who then proceeded to murder people with them) are all breaking during the debt ceiling situation is either the absolute best or the absolute worst luck for the Obama administration. On the one hand, the administration is not getting hammered with new details and demands for information every day: on the other, eventually the debt ceiling situation will be over, and when all that happens, the details will have piled up most alarmingly.

Don’t believe me? Let me just list the stuff that we’ve learned this week.:

  • Let’s start with this report from the House Oversight Committee, which helpfully informs us that BATFE officials active in Mexico were allegedly deliberately not told by their superiors – and the rest of the government – that there was a program in place to allow guns to be illegally resold to Mexican narco-terrorists and then lose trace of the guns. Once those officials found out about this on their own, they were allegedly told that the program had been completed several months before it actually was… only by which time both Mexican and American personnel were dead. To say that these officials are displeased that their own organization violated their training and made them unwitting dupes in an international incident is, to put it mildly, a vast understatement.
  • Please also note this Heritage piece on the damage that this has done with our relationship with Mexico; the only problem with said piece is that the phrase ‘ugly American’ appears nowhere in it.
  • Which is why we’re having BATFE officials apologizing to Mexico right now. Naturally, they’re not the officials that caused the problem.
  • Oh, and in case you were wondering: House Oversight Chair Darrell Issa (R) has indicated that the government is attempting to intimidate whistleblowers out of providing full details on this debacle.
  • BATFE, by the way, attempted to stonewall Issa by claiming that no F&F guns were used to actually kill Border Agent Brian Terry (F&F guns were found on the scene). Guess what? The FBI’s own ballistic reports didn’t rule out the possibility.

Oh, it only gets better from here, for a given value of ‘better.’ For example… who was involved in this disaster, anyway?

  • Well, according to BATFE former Phoenix field office head William Newell, the program was shared out by BATFE, DEA, IRS, and ICE.
  • And watch the video below, in which an exceptionally angry Pat Meehan (freshman Republican Congressman* and former US Attorney) rips Newell for trying to claim that they had no intention of letting the guns go to Mexico when the plan was to let sellers go to Mexico and successfully sell guns there. No, really, watch it: it will give you an idea of how seriously our legislators are taking this story.

  • Needless to say, we already knew that the Justice Department was likewise in this up to their necks, but it’s nice that they’re admitting it.
  • And - this is the revelation that threatens to really upset the applecart – Newell testified that he shared information on F&F with National Security Director (North America) Kevin O’Reilly (in other words, somebody in the White House). The White House’s response was that… O’Reilly may have been told; but he wasn’t told-told, if you know what they mean.

And this is just Wednesday. Imagine what we may know by Friday.

PS: I’ve said this before, but let me repeat: government scandals take a while to mature and ripen. Much like garbage in the sun.

People need to be arrested, indicted and impeached.

This is what happens when children are left to play with matches. It can’t even be said to be the actions of fully-formed adult minds.

What has come out thus far is already beyond belief, and there is doubtless far more to come.

That’s the way to ask the question…

It can’t be either the weapon-smuggling or the alleged narco-criminal tie-ins….

  • ss396

right after they showed the link into the White House. Granted, that one was to Attorney General Mitchell, who I suppose outranks the National Security Director for North America. But, hey, the night is young. We’ll get Holder’s fingerprints sooner or later. (drip, drip, drip)

What did Rahm know, and when did he forget it?

  • banzaibob

Should not be getting apologies, they should be getting the heads of the folks who ran this program. Especially if it came from the top, yeah that means you AG Holder.

  • irishgirl

where he is grilling Newell. He really gets after it.

  • msctex

Moe makes a great point in that when they are finally forced to acknowledge it, the details will have already come out and will be beyond “management,” as they say.

Obama/Holder funded it with stimulus money as announced by Deputy DOJ attorney, David Ogden…

“Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion. DHS is making similar commitments, as Secretary Napolitano will detail.”

And our “dear leaders” tell us they can’t find any places to cut spending. Here’s another in a long line of places that obviously need cutting. Fire those involved, and implement massive layoffs. Eliminate the BATFE Department altogether, taking the top 10% of employees from the existing BATFE and merge them into the FBI.

…is that it’s the parent operation, and not in itself automatically pernicious. It’s specifically Operation F&F where the breakdown in procedure took place, with disastrous results. In other words, you need to link an official to knowledge of F&F, not Gunrunner – which is why the WH got so alarmed when it came out that one of their staff was briefed on the former.

  • Tbone

Hey, darn near everything else that has happened in the last 40 years has been blamed on Watergate.

Just a *hope* that this leads to some *change*… of (alleged) leadership…

  • http://theheartlander.wordpress.com/ heartlander

    It is purposeful, deliberate malice.

If you want to use a playing-with-matches metaphor, it is grown adults taking matches and deliberately, purposefully burning the place down.

It’s arsonists who not only love burning down buildings, but deliberately seek out buildings with hundreds of people inside, whom they know with certainty will die as a result of their action.

Impeach? HELL, no, Eric Holder and whoever else was in on it need to be put on trial as accessories to murder.

In fact, because the drug cartels (and the Hezbollah terrorists who now are entangled with the cartels) are enemies of the American people, I would argue that they should be tried for treason.

The Undercover Operational Proposal Committee (UOPC, which you may have heard Meehan mention in the clip above) that had to sign off on this operation, is:

a body composed of senior executives from every US enforcement agency?Justice, ATF, DEA, DHS, ICE, FBI, Secret Service et al?any department or agency whose interests might be affected or intersected by the operation.

Not only that, but the Export Control Act:

prohibits the sale of certain deadly weapons and serious military hardware to foreign nationals without the express consent and the issuance of an exemption from [the Dept. of] State.

So we are talking about involvement of possibly four different Cabinet-level Departments: Justice (Holder), Homeland Security (Napolitano), Treasury (Geithner) and State (Clinton). Plus, as we learned this week, Obama’s National Security Director for North America. It is, quite frankly, laughable to suggest that that many huge players in the Administration would be jointly involved in an operation without Obama being involved.

Let us also not forget that we’re not just talking Operation Fast and Furious out of the Phoenix-area office. That’s only one tentacle of this monster. We’ve got Operation Castaway out of Tampa (sending over 1000 guns to Honduran gangsters including MS-13, one of the bloodiest, cruelest, scariest gangs on earth).

We’ve recently learned of ATF gunrunning operations based from Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth, the latter supplying guns to the Los Zetas drug cartel, which is stockpiling them in huge stashes on both sides of the border.

With every passing week, this operation seems to get bigger and bigger and bigger. It’s HUGE. Much, much, much worse than Iran-Contra… and of course, infinitely worse than Watergate.

Conspiracy, violations of export laws, obstruction of justice, contempt of Congress, perjury, accessory to murder, and TREASON. Committed by some of the highest officials in the land. It boggles the mind.

Lock these mass murderers up and throw away the key.

  • http://theheartlander.wordpress.com/ heartlander

See my comment further up in the thread.

Fast and Furious was out of the Phoenix office. But we’ve recently found out that at least three other offices had similar operations going on. Houston, Dallas-FortWorth (supplying the Los Zetas cartel) and Tampa (supplying MS-13 and other deadly gangsters in Honduras).

Fast and Furious is just the tip of the iceberg.

  • http://theheartlander.wordpress.com/ heartlander

These monsters need to be tried in a regular court of law for conspiracy and being accessories to mass murder. And for treason.

  • SoFiMil

Totally not cool, especially with your three-letter and four-letter abbreviations.

  • msctex

But in this instance as with many others, it is purposeful, deliberate malice, executed in an unbelievably poor, slipshod fashion. So it certainly is incompetence. It’s just that these people are so fundamentally warped they can’t even get dumb Evil right.

he just breaks laws of other countries that kill a few people and they sue us for billions.

I noticed Obama is giving 1.3 billion to hispanic and female farmers. I should have my wife fill out a form and get an easy $50,000. More wealth spreading.
