Operation Fast & Furious… Rocket Launchers?

You’re going to see the below quoted text a lot, because it’s an excellent summation of the problem that we’re having with the Obama administration’s catastrophically incompetent Fast & Furious disaster*:

Let’s review: When we first learned about Fast and Furious, the news was that a number of assault rifles had been sold to straw purchasers. Soon, we learned that the number was approximately 2,500 and that some of those were .50 caliber sniper rifles. Then we learned that somewhere between 1,200 and 1,300 of the weapons were unaccounted for, and that the ATF had allowed another upstanding gentleman to walk grenade components into Mexico (I guess he ended up in Mexico: no one knows because the ATF lost him). And finally, we’re learning that just a few days ago, on our side of the border, U.S. Border Patrol Agents found rocket and grenade launchers, assault rifles, and C4 explosives.

(More here, including an observation that I’d rather not think about.)

That last bit references this local report (via Town Hall)- “U. S. Border Patrol agents seized six assault rifles, one rocket launcher, a grenade launcher, and three packages of what appeared to be C-4 explosives Tuesday near the Rio Grande.” – complete with helpful picture, just in case you were wondering whether they might have just seized an artist’s portable carrying case, or something. Mind you, this particular seized contraband may not have had anything to do with Operation Fast and Furious (certainly you can’t buy fully-loaded rocket launchers in gun stores. At least, I hope) – but is it safe to bet that way? After all, the ‘grenade components’ thing refers to this story about an American citizen smuggling grenade parts into Mexico; in case you were wondering, yeah, the ATF knew about him and let him go. Last year**. The .50 caliber sniper rifle story? Here you go.

The whole mess, in a nutshell? Here and here and here and here and here: bottom line is, the US government massively screwed up by deliberately letting guns get run into Mexico – and into the waiting, eager hands of Mexican narco-terrorists. The Mexican government is fuming: it’s their citizens getting shot, and the Ugly Americans didn’t clear any of this with them. Gun rights organizations are fuming, too: they have suspicions about the ultimate goal of the Obama administration here, and there’s admittedly evidence that can be reasonably seen as backing them up on that. And the center-right is fuming most of all: and that’s because in a just universe, starting Monday, Attorney General Eric Holder would be spending his working hours sitting at a House Government Oversight table hooked up to a polygraph machine and describing his activities, day by day.

To which I can only say what I have to say: these things take time, and Grassley/Issa aren’t going anywhere. And they know who has to answer to this, in the end.

*Which is not to be confused with the Obama administration’s catastrophically incompetent Solyndra meltdown, or the Obama administration’s catastrophically incompetent Lightsquared scandal, or the Obama administration’s catastrophically incompetent stimulus meltdown, and I can do this all day.

**Also via Town Hall: Katie Pavlich seems to be covering this story over there.

    Scariest part of the article.

  • FlyingTigress

… I can think of many things to which he should be hooked-up – other than a polygraph (which, reportedly, does no good at assessing the lies of sociopaths/congential liars) – to get some straight answers.

I’m also sorry that, right now, I’d even vote for an inanimate carbon rod if it meant getting the crooks and mobsters out of the White House and various Executive departments.

  • clintonformccain

if that’s what it took to get rid of these people.

  • throwback59

won’t do any good since he can walk on water.
I guess we will just have to wait till next Nov.

  • andy_in_texas

it is almost Chicago like….oh yeah.

When you think you’re always correct and know everything, it is amazing how many stupid errors you can make, not taking into account potential harm both politically and in actual lives of innocent human beings. The One is becoming the best example of this, ever.

The stimulus will fix the economy! Er, no. The health care bill – if you like your current insurance, you can keep it. Er, no. Now, in trying to make gun sellers look bad, he’s helped kill a lot of people, further destabilize our neighbor, and further exposed himself as a liar. Barry, do us all a favor and stop trying to look so “smart”. We’ll all be better off, and so will you, because you screw up so royally every time you “fix” a problem.

November 2012 cannot arrive soon enough for our nation, and – Mexico!

  • msctex

    But for two:

    MEXICAN PRISON.

  • ombd

I wonder why? A glance at a couple of photos in today’s Washington Post might provide a few hints … http://www.ombudizen.com/2011/09/17/a-picture-is-worth/

  • smagar

We can always send Forward Air Controllers (FACs) out with the Border Patrol.

I.e., we already have the tools we need to even the score on the ground…as long as the civilian leaders in the Beltway give the green light.

  • johnt

Eric the Dumb may be working on it, though he does have to clear it with The O, that is when O is not in one of his stupors, medically induced or otherwise. They’re starting to fall apart, the stupidity and over reliance on media support gave these dangerous fools too much confidence.
Will the NY Times do another lying hit piece on Issa? Will it matter?

  • ezservant

I don’t understand why our legal system is passing the buck on such an obvious travesty. It’s always a few against many when it comes to the good guys vs. the BAD. How long do we tolerate these calculated intrusions of our liberty? It’s not that they can’t, they wont enforce our laws or even do what’s right. In my opinion, it is as it seems, It’s all about Gun Control and a way for them to take our Gun rights away.

  • FlyingTigress

.. this IS our legal system.

What party, would you say, is the primary recipient of donations from the ABA?

  • Scope

has been very bad for the American taxpayers, but, it didn’t get people killed as the Fast and Furious debacle has. Every time you think Issa et al have found the smoking gun, the focus is taken off the rifle only to focus on yet another possible smoking gun. Hasn’t it been the goal of the entire Obama administration to create so many crises at one time that it’s hard to get to the bottom of any of the crises. I suspect that there will be so many ongoing investigations that even after Obama is gone come Jan. 2013, he and many in his administration will have to high tail it out of the country, or over to his favorite international saviour organization the UN, in order for international law, as well as his liberal internationalist judges like Soto will save him from the fate he so richly deserves.

“CBS News has learned that the Mexican Government has retained an American law firm to explore filing civil charges against U.S. gun manufacturers and distributors over the flood of guns crossing the border into Mexico.

Sources say Mexico’s frustration with U.S. efforts to stop the flow of weapons has pushed them into this novel approach. The law firm is looking at charges that may include civil RICO. The contract was signed on November 2, 2010 by a representative of Mexico’s Attorney General, at their Washington embassy.”

    snip

“According to sources, investigators will obtain makes and serial numbers of guns seized by Mexican authorities and trace them to their U.S. distributors and manufacturers.”

Ummm, no need to do that boys. We, uh, kinda know all that stuff already, and you can trace the guns all the way back to the US Justice Department. “Stop the flow of weapons”? – hell, Holder and Obama CAUSED the flow of weapons.

  • lineholder

And I’m not sure how to put this because it could be interpreted “borderline conspiracy theory”.

There is plenty of evidence to indicate that liberals would love to go after 2A. Situations of this sort, where Mexican gov’t goes after manufacturers…just strikes me as an “end around” method of sorts to achieve gun control libs are after.

Do you see any evidence of that or am I reading too much into it?

  • jeepnpat1

Is that they could have been used as means to obtain said launchers as well.

  • victrola

To me this scandal is far worse than Watergate.

My hope is that Republicans are waiting closer to the election before making this a front and center issue because right now, this scandal barely gets mentioned. People actually dies from this administration’s incompetence.

With a 9% unemployment and an economy on the cusp of a double dip PLUS all of these scandals, I’d be terrified to be a Democrat in 2012.

  • Jack_Savage

I do not believe it was the primary purpose of this “plan”, but I believe it was viewed as an additional benefit and a tidy little bonus for the administration and 2A foes. Worst case, negative publicity for gun dealers and owners and a talking point for the left (which we saw before we knew the truth), best case, further restrictions on gun rights.

I have no doubt that the reaction of the Mexican government and leftists in America was foreseen by the Justice Department and the administration, and welcomed.

On a related note, I always viewed the incredible deficit spending as intentional on two levels. First, as a payoff to blue states and Democrat donors. Second, it was so outrageous that any uptick in the economy would result in a reduction of the horrible deficit, which the administration would take full credit for without anyone remembering who caused it in the first place.

These jerks are busy setting fires just so they can claim credit for putting them out. Trouble is, the fires got out of control.

  • in_awe

It sure seems like the old community organizer is following Alinsky and Cloward & Piven – overwhelm the system in order to cause its collapse. Sort of a “spin the heads of the enemy so they can’t focus or direct fire”. It ultimately causes exhaustion of interest by the public. they eventually just assume someone is guarding the gates and go back to caring more about Charlie Sheen and Lady Gaga.

I am sure that Obama’s campaign staff is already filming the commercials about all the harassment heaped upon him by all those Republican hate mongers driving committee investigations in the House – distracting him and his brain trust from creating and saving jobs.

  • drfredc

At times It sure seems the Obama WH is hell bent on destroying America thru this and that policy.

One might project that the way things are going, Fast & Furious is on the verge of taking this to a new level — equipping a force of illegals and crooks with our own weapons.

What’s not clear is this a purposeful equipping of an assault or defensive force, or both, and for assaulting or defending what? Perhaps it’s all about making it so no one will challenge illegals coming across the borders to apply for Obamacrat’s Dream Act? Or is this just more Obamacrat ignorance and stupidity on steroids…?

  • johnt

or maybe keep the vote at home, or a possible poll watching corps. They could work with the patriots of La Raza, the blue collar heros of Jimmy Hoffa and the kindly Richard Trunka, & the volunteers who would come out of the shadows of Daily Kos and other homes of enlightened leftist “progressives”. All for the noble purpose of saving democracy.& further pumping up the deficits, like Greece has done.
    Everybody needs a noble cause.

  • RetiredFF

incompetency in any of these cases. It is deliberate and they will destroy our Constitution, our Bill of Rights and Capitalism by overwhelming whatever they can by any means necessary. There is no “rule of law” here in this administration. The sad part is there are too many out there that will never see the true damage already done and that Obamacare will be the “death” of our Freedom and our Republic.

  • Michael Dugas

the deaths and damage to private property as a result of the heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine that has crossed into the USA from Mexico. All the costs incurred from Law Enforcement to housing prisoners to subsidized rehab/treatment programs. While we are at it lets sue them for the cost of dealing with all their citizens who are here illegally and who are encouraged by that same government to come here and work and send money home.

    It could be endless……….

  • Adjoran

and why it, although certainly one of the most important scandals of the federal government – no one died in Watergate or Teapot Dome or even La Affair Lewinsky (well, taste died, maybe, but you just can’t anthropomorphize everything) – doesn’t get the coverage of a Solyndra or even a LightSquared.

You can explain other scandals, they make sense in some way or another: someone is spying on political opponents, someone is getting rich, someone is getting laid. F&F just makes no sense at all. You can’t explain what the heck they might have been trying to do with it, other than arm Mexican drug gangs.

  • swamphermit

Also, in Libya, Obama and the Dems just lost about 20,000 shoulder-launched missiles. Some good for 11,000 feet…

  • seattlebruce

“They?re starting to fall apart, the stupidity and over reliance on media support gave these dangerous fools too much confidence.”

That and the 63 million votes Obama got in ’08. Oh yeah, what was that about the media…OK…

  • seattlebruce
  • johnt

& they continue to foster the grotesquely inaccurate image of normalcy, even competence if you can believe it. A lost cause I would think though O still lives in a fantasy world of press clippngs and the cheers of a decreasing number of the dim witted. No 63 million 2nd time around,

  • The_Gadfly

turn him over to the families who have lost a loved one to the American supplied arms. No pointy sticks or machetes allowed.

  • The_Gadfly

and request that the judge dismiss the case because the companies were cooperating in an ongoing DoJ operation.

No need to feed the sharks more than you have to.

  • The_Gadfly

But Solyndra has legs and is sexier.

In any event, Republicans CAN walk and chew gum at the same time, so I’d say hit him with both the day after he accepts the nomination at the Democrat conclave.
