MO Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) cuts and runs.

It’s official: the last remaining ostensibly politically viable member of the once-powerful Carnahan dynasty has decided to not seek a third term. I say ‘ostensibly’ because it was actually unclear that Robin Carnahan was ever going to recover from her humiliating shellacking at the hands of Roy Blunt in last year’s MO-SEN race (13 points is pretty bad). And I say ‘last remaining’ because her brother Russ Carnahan is, metaphorically speaking, a dead man walking: the Missouri legislature took the opportunity offered by redistricting to excise Carnahan’s seat in a heroic act of political eugenics.

As you may have guessed from the above, I am not particularly enamored of the Carnahan dynasty. Truth be told, I mistrust any American political dynasty that doesn’t have John Adams as a primary genetic ancestor: frankly, they tend to turn to the bad by the third generation*. So you can imagine that the news that Robin is not going to wait around to be tossed out of office is a pleasant one for me… particularly since it means that Tom Carnahan has a little bit of a patronage problem now for his wind boondoggle business. As in, a little bit of a lack of patronage problem.

No wonder Tom is sucking up to the President, these days.’Government patronage’ is pretty much his company’s business model.

Moe, didn’t you get the memo today? Redstate is about mocking a fellow Republican today all day long. Let’s save these trivial posting about Democrat woes until tomorrow.

  • azaeroprof

And Moe could have done it in a truly funny and snarky way that apparently only he can do. Erick’s approach is just, well, lame.

  • dacisme

Good idea, the next time Erick wants to mock someone I suggest he check in with Moe first. Moe at least could add some wit!

  • evilleramsfan

Moe, you hit it head on! Having watched these people from just across the river in Illinois. It will be a good day when there are no longer any Carnahans in politics….

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

I didn’t quite hear that: it sounded like you were using my post to passively-aggressively threadjack/whine about RedState’s schedule of posts today.

    But that would be contraindicated.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

My only problem with the posting schedule today is that Erick didn’t use the theme from Jeopardy like I suggested he should.

  • Jack_Savage

No push back allowed? Disagree with the content / hit the door? If you don’t think Palin really deserves this, and maybe the theme today is a bit beneath RedState, then beat it?

Got it. I know, I know, private property, no free speech here, blah blah blah. Heard it before.

I missed the previous purges, looks like I’ll finally get nailed by this one. Dammit, Sarah. The things I go through for you.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

…it is that there is a plethora of Sarah Palin-related front-page posts where people may comment. This is not one of those posts, and I do not appreciate people trying to either threadjack it, or else use me to try to get some hits in on Erick.

    Threadjacking is expressly forbidden.

Don’t get a big head here. If you get banned it will be because you broke the rules.

  • dacisme

Hmm, it is possible that Redstate.com is really just a club run by the popular crowd and if any of us little people speak up we get smacked down. I do not think I was whining, but it does sound like I’ve struck a nerve with you. Whoa to the next republican that doesn’t play the way redstate wants them to. And silly me I thought the conservatives were above this silliness. What was I thinking!

  • Aaron Gardner

    You could’a been a contender…

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

Now, since this unpleasant interruption has been dealt with, did people want to talk about Robin Carnahan?

  • azaeroprof

I was responding to the comment and contributing to a threadjack without thinking.
And I know where the door is and am just throwing out some parting comments before going through it. I guess RedState has been too important to me over the last few years to just walk away quietly.

  • Jack_Savage

My thoughts exactly. I guess it shouldn’t have, but this caught me a bit off guard. It’ll be hard for me as well.

See you on the other side of the door, prof. And just for grins, you guys should Google “Erick Erickson Sarah Palin”. Enlightening.

2012 is gonna suck without this place.

and I thought the followers of the cult of Paul were bad…

Anyhoo, I didn’t think Robin had the intestinal fortitude to back out.

I’m trying to recall last year my forecast for the Carnahans, Robin included and I just can’t remember… other than deciding it was better to call her by her married name instead of her maiden name.

I don’t think Robin had anywhere to go and she knew it. Would she willingly step down and take a legislative seat? I don’t recall the district she actually calls home – it’s probably a red district anyhow or warmed by an old Democrat horse who’s not going to go quietly for a Carnahan.

With her not running, who does that leave for the Republicans and conversely, who does that leave among the Democrats to run for the State Sec. seat? I would not be surprised at all to hear Republican Schweich deciding to run for State Sec. He’s auditor now and it seems to be that the seat is nothing more than a platform for higher office.

Robin will land on her feet though, never fear. Those politicians run in a small enough pool, no telling how many backs she’s scratched to get some IOU’s for retirement.
