Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in remarks Thursday, ranked U.S. ally India with China as a rising threat to the U.S. in Asia. The Pentagon quickly sought to roll back the remarks.
“We face the threats from rising powers — China, India, others — that we have to always have sufficient force protection out there in the Pacific to make sure they know we’re never going anywhere,” Mr. Panetta said during a visit to a shipyard in Groton, Conn., where he toured a submarine, the Mississippi, in the final stages of construction.
(Via Hot Air Headlines) It is quite bad enough that Panetta’s equal fool of a colleague Attorney General Eric Holder has damaged our relationship with Mexico to the point where their Attorney General apparently no longer trusts us to try gun runners on our own (and AG Holder had better hope that AG Morales doesn’t decide that she wants to put out a few arrest warrants on American law-enforcement officials); so I would appreciate it if the Secretary of Defense did not utterly muck up our relationship with India, which was one of the previous administration’s most useful long-term diplomatic projects. If this proves to be beyond the Secretary’s feeble powers, then the Secretary is invited to simply stay in his office and turn off the phone; he’s got only thirteen months’ worth of service left (maximum) anyway.
The terrifying part? Foreign policy is the area where the Obama administration does arguably best. Which apparently means that they only catastrophically mess things up every other month.

PS: A colleague of mine wonders whether this gaffe actually represents either: an admission that Malthusian thought processes form the basis for our current foreign policy; the revelation that this administration directly equates population size with threat level; or some demented combination of both. For the sake of the country, I’m hoping that this was instead just standard, pig-ignorant Ugly Americanism.

You know, I’ve noticed that I’ve had to hope that “blindingly stupid incompetence” was the true reason for a lot of what the Obama White House has done recently…

And Panettta is touted as one of the bright ones in
Tbone (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 9:42AM EDT (link)the Administration. I guess that just makes him a good hack.
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
Sadly, Tbone....
Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 10:01AM EDT (link)Panetta is one of the brighter bulbs in this particular fixture.
Mr. Obama is pretending that an economic “recovery” is underway when he knows damn well that the banking system is just blowing smoke up the shredded *** of what’s left of that economy – James Howard Kunstler
Clearly, the Obama administration
aesthete (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 11:32AM EDT (link)invested in an, uh, energy saving bulb when they hired Panetta.
“It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.”

Buying the Hype?
edintexas Friday, November 18th at 9:46AM EDT (link)What in the world caused you to write that “Foreign policy is the area where the Obama administration does arguably best. Which apparently means that they only catastrophically mess things up every other month.”
Could it be that they don’t engage in foreign policy every month? Or is it that the MSM doesn’t cover their every flub? Maybe that’s it, “flubs” don’t count – only catastrophes. Or does it exclude the overall result, concentrating instead of individual errors. Michael Barone had a pretty good column the other day about the general direction of Dear Leader’s foreign policy.
India
neoavatara (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 10:08AM EDT (link)I know quite a lot about India…and these comments will be blown out of proportion there, and will cause a short term rift, at least.
India poses NO THREAT, ZERO, NADA. Their interests align with ours on virtually every level. Pakistan? Al Qaeda and Muslim terrorism? Red China?
Check, check, and check.
This comment will do damage, no matter how much they down play it. Stupidity on the highest level.

India even has good relations with Israel.
avgjo (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 11:00AM EDT (link)As you said, this will do damage.
Ceterum autem censeo, Obamaecuram esse delendam.
It’s the morality, stupid.
I'm assuming ...
skorrent1 (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 10:37AM EDT (link)That it is the utter ignorance of military matters on the part of the MSM that resulted in the strategic term “force projection” being mistranscribed as “force protection” — whatever that is supposed to mean. Damn Spellcheck, anyway.
They are both military terms.
daendda Friday, November 18th at 1:12PM EDT (link)But in this case force projection is likely what is meant. Force protection is the ability to prevent the enemy or environment from degrading combat power.
So Herman was a big dunce
kajun Friday, November 18th at 11:48AM EDT (link)but he’s only running for office of President. Panetta is the serving official and doesn’t know jack about our allies or evidently our foreign policy. So how come is ole Leon getting a pass on his remarks???
