Andre Bauer’s unfortunate endorsement of Newt Gingrich. [UPDATE]

[Please note the edit below: the implication in the CNN article was that Bauer's endorsement of Gingrich was welcomed by the campaign, but there's still wiggle room for Team Newt. I've emailed the Gingrich campaign to confirm. - Moe Lane]

Team Newt announced today that they [CNN reported today that the Gingrich campaign] had picked up the endorsement of Andre Bauer, who is: a former Lt. Governor of South Carolina; a former gubernatorial candidate; and a potential candidate for the new SC-07 seat. If that name sounds familiar, it should… because Andre Bauer was also the person that current South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley gutted like a newly-caught river trout for Bauer’s (alleged) role in attempting to wreck Haley’s marriage and career:

…Yeah. For those of you without video access and/or sufficient recall of the situation, let me summarize: then-state Representative Haley had been the subject of some extremely salacious rumors (that have mysteriously never been confirmed, or even referred to, since the election) insinuating that she had been the subject of an affair. Said insinuations eventually resulted in one of Bauer’s staffers ‘heroically’ taking the fall by claiming an affair with Haley. Haley called Bauer on it in a televised debate; Bauer piously claimed that he had fired the dirty adulterous staffer in question as soon as he heard the rumor; Haley pointed out – sweetly; oh, so terribly sweetly – that Bauer’s campaign had tried to shop the rumor around before firing the staffer; and Bauer flopped around on the debate floor for forty-five seconds while Nikki Haley locked down the Republican nomination for South Carolina governor*.

All of which leads to my polite and honestly-meant suggestion to the Gingrich campaign: they may want to reconsider just how much they use this guy for the South Carolina primary. Nikki Haley currently enjoys a 64% approval rating among SC Republican primary voters, and I suspect that she remembers Mr. Bauer quite well, if not precisely fondly. Particularly since Bauer may have a talent for unfortunate remarks:

[Bauer] drew criticism for blaming South Carolina’s high unemployment on people too lazy to do field work. He said his grandmother told him not to feed stray animals because they reproduce, as he spoke of people being dependent on state assistance.

No, really, it’s actually what Bauer said. Only the Washington Post was being merciful.

    And I don’t like it….

talk out of both sides of you mouth on this site?

Who is better suited for the tasks at hand (currently in the running) than Newt? At some point you have to ask yourself this sensible question. I have been researching these candidates exclusively for one and 1/2 years .. I was all in for Ron Paul until I heard him speak about Iran. Sad, to say, under his administrationl we’ll all be dead.

That leave us with Bachmann (passionate and knowledgeable) Romney (Mr. Siding Saleman) Perry (sorry, I know he’s not but he comes off as an idiot) Santorum (who is a great choice but not electable at all) Huntsmen (not) Johnson (not) Cain (not).

So people who will we help get thru Iowa, New Hampshire and on. Think fast because TICK and TOCK.

  • Marcus_Traianus

    You don’t like what?

Just curious, since his campaign hasn’t responded to this endorsement yet. Nor did he ask for this clown’s endorsement.

  • andystone

to accept all endorsements, particularly if there are some problems with the endorser.

  • tricianc

Team Newt announced today that they had picked up the endorsement of Andre Bauer…

“Team Newt” “announced” “picked up the endorsement”

Obviously, this means he has responded, and is proud enough to announce it.

  • tricianc

Team Newt announced today that they had picked up the endorsement of Andre Bauer?

?Team Newt? ?announced? ?picked up the endorsement?

Obviously, this means he has responded, and is proud enough to announce it.

And quite obviously through this announcement, it means he accepted the endorsement.

  • izoneguy

    Read the first sentence again:

Team Newt announced today that they had picked up the endorsement of Andre Bauer.

I am assuming since Team Newt announced it then they accept it.

    Read Moe’s highlighted sentence again:

[Bauer] drew criticism for blaming South Carolina?s high unemployment on people too lazy to do field work. He said his grandmother told him not to feed stray animals because they reproduce, as he spoke of people being dependent on state assistance.

Like I said – I don’t like where Newt is going…..if you don’t get it – then you won’t – And if you don’t – I guess it does not matter.

how Perry can come across as an idiot and win the governorship of Texas 3 times?

Now, either you think Texans are fools or you must be a fool. Which one is it?

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

I’m reviewing the article, and it’s fair to say that at best the implication is that Gingrich is accepting the endorsement.

  • reggie182

I think it’s fair to mention that it is a bit of an advantage to be a Republican when running for Governor of Texas.

The last time a Democrat was elected Governor of Texas was in….

    1990

It was Ann Richards. Her opponent was Clayton Williams. At one time he led her in the polls by twenty points, then he did one of the most epically stupid things in political history and told a joke about rape….saying that it was just like the rain…inevitable….and you just had to sit back and enjoy. In lieu of the stupidity, Williams would have won.

Before that? Democrat Mark White defeated Bill Clements……in 1982.

  • sunshinek67

Fits nicely with Gingrich’s janitor-child labor comments.

  • izoneguy

Is get the kids working early before they get lazy….LOL

this kind of thing does happen to all candidates. Candidates can’t help who endorse them. In a two party system, there are a lot of nuts on both sides.

Unfortunately, the standard for not accepting an endorsement is almost the following: (1) breathes air; (2) no recent criminal convictions.

Hopefully Bauer will stay out of the limelight. This is hardly a reason to turn away from Newt. No presidential campaign is going to avoid all of these type of things—at least not a campaign that is in double digits.

I remember in 2007 that Spence Abraham (someone who was characterized as being open borders and soft on Jihad) actually worked Fred’s campaign. Some people acted like the linkage would sink Fred’s campaign. It was a laughable argument give Fred’s positions on those issues.

How many degrees of Kevin Bacon separate anyone from a nut?

When I first heard the quote, I feared that Newt had said it—and that would be a problem . . . a BIG PROBLEM.

That is a pretty tall order.

People read into things a wee bit much.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

The problem here is the ‘surrogate’ bit that CNN used, which implied a two-way relationship. But it’s fair to want a clarification on this, so I’ve emailed Gingrich’s campaign accordingly.

Personally, I’m hoping for a “Heck, No!” from Team Newt. Bauer’s been on the Bad List for a lot of us here for a while.

  • Tbone

Try to keep that in mind. However, in that you want to play, name the Republicans Perry beat for the nomination all three times.

because he has a better record all around, has the best policies/ideas to turn this ship around, hasn’t flipped on the major issues for conservatives, wore our nation’s uniform, has no personal baggage that a billion dollars and the Left can exploit in the general election, etc. etc.

Honestly, I cannot believe my party is holding some bad early debate performances (not downplaying-they were pretty bad) against the one candidate who has a proven track record of conservative success. He won the SC debate and tied for the win last Tuesday. The immigration issue is a non-starter also. Perry has been far more hawkish about border security and illegal immigration than any other republican candidate. We have allowed the MSM/establishment to direct our views instead of truly assessing who would be best to help our country.

  • Tbone

Can’t answer the question is a fail.

  • billymorris68

it’s really good news for perry, right??!

  • snowshooze

And he figures his best bet is to suck up to Newt.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

People write things that look thoroughly nasty, I tell them to clarify, they ignore me, I ban them, and I update their .sig files accordingly.

You’d think that they’d learn by now.

  • quad4x4

Negative and stupid stuff can lead ‘some ‘people to thnk they are great, whereas they need a license to be stupid.
THANK YOU, for exercising the right stuff.

  • jfpurdue01

After Mark Sanford went off his rocker, Bauer was all over TV demanding that Sanford resign, putting pressure on Sanford at the statehouse and in the media. Of course, he was doing that not necessarily out of what was best for Sanford, but what was best for Andre Bauer. If Sanford had quit, Bauer would have been governor and had the upper hand to beat Haley. Bauer is scum.

  • suzywuzy

Yes, allow me to respond .. Perry is doing great in those debates!!

~Which department was he gonna cut again?
~Which vaccines were getting crammed down women’s throats again?
~Which section of people were singled out to get free college education?

Please, go to 100 sites and see what the Conservative Women of your State are saying about your Texas governor.

Again, let me say to you, I know he’s not an idiot but he has certainly, thusfar, come off as one.

I have a great many Texas friends. My family is from Texas once upon a time. I’m sorry If I offended you personally especially since I wasn’t speaking about Y O U.

    Regards

  • gekster

You are so uninformed you embarras yourself.
You should read here for awhile before you comment again and beclown yourself even more.
Can you even name all of the departments in Washington.
How many girls got a vacine crammed down thier throats, and which state force Gardasil on little girs and boys with out an opt-out.
Do you even know what the Texas Dreamact entails.
Until you can answer those questions intelligently, you should refrain from posting.
You bring the IQ level of this site down.

  • nathanalbright

    …methinks this is one.

  • suzywuzy

I wish I was uninformed, if so, I’d be baking Russian Teacakes vs. reading your angry, addlepated diatribe and worrying moreover about the ‘state’ of Conservatives such as yourself.

You speak of ‘Constitutional Principles’ since when is it constitutional to force a mother or father to give their daughter a vaccine? Tell me please, since when? Even Gov. Perry doesn?t deny he did this (are you watching and reading) and he also admits he was wrong on this matter.

Gov. Perry also admits he forgot the Departments of Government which he?d cut from the budget. An honest mistake made funny, I liked that he was able to do this.

Gov Perry stands behind his effort to help Illegals? in Texas receive a college education. In his own words, he vows to make them productive member of our society. He is proud of the Dreamact.

Did you miss all of this while wearing your rose-colored glasses?

I?d like to suggest that you please keep an open mind, think strategically, and remember we cannot defeat liberals with clouded dedications and passions just because that is ?who we are for?. If our goal is to defeat Obama then we had better be able to explain to our Liberal friends and neighbors who our candidate is and why, even when he/she is imperfect that they are the best candidate for POTUS.

  • westcoastpatriette

Why don’t you get some sleep before you continue spewing your garbled attacks on Perry? Or change your moniker to stupid, hysterical suzywuzy? Cuz that’s how you sound in you diatribes.

Give us a break, will ya?

  • gekster

I understand where you get the wuzy part. Or is that pronounced woozy.
And there is no anger in my post, just frustration at posters like you who don’t have a clue to what they’re posting about.

I’ll ask again how many girls were vacinated, and how many were forced.
You clearly didn’t see the opt-out for any reason given w/r to the Gardasil issue.
With the vacine being a mandate, with an easy opt-out, insurance companies were
obliged to cover a 300- 400 doller shot.
People who wanted it and were to poor to aford it were able to get it, all along with an opt-out option. But you don’t see that, do you.
But why make a vacine afordable and available that will stop a cancer that is 100% fatal. One that has to be given before they become sexually active.
I see you don’t have a problem with people getting cancer.
and tell me how many states have it mandatory for both boys and girls with no opt-out option.
Is there opt-outs for polio, small pox, measle vacines.
And the fact that he withdrew it after the backlash from the legislature and public
means nothing to you. I would note that this politician heard the voice of the people and acted accordingly. Something most politicians don’t do. See Obama.

I also see that Perry is only one who ever ran for President who forgot something in a debate. To you that makes him unfit for President. See Ronald Reagan.

The instate tuition thing, tell me what you know about it.
Who proposed it in the legislature. How many legislatures voted for, and how many against. What level of support for the act is supported by the people of Texas.
Please, address my questions instead of obfuscating.
    Can you answer my questions.

I don’t have rose collered glassses, they are #2 smoke.
My mind is open to all candidates at this time, and if you had been around for more than a couple of weeks you would know that.
I just don’t like to see people who are as misinformed as those like you trying put up bull as truth.

  • suzywuzy

II like your passion about Gov Perry it?s wonderful. I?m sure the Libs are wishing, hoping and praying that he will be the 2012 GOP candidate. Rest assured, he won’t be & you can take that to the bank.

Wuzy? Oh sure, I see clearly that there?s more to be concerned about in 2012 than just the Libs ..

  • gekster

It is simple. Just answer the questions.
Don’t deflect, just give me your answers.
    If you can’t, say so.
If you won’t, then don’t post statements you can’t back up.

  • Common_Cents

did they actively pursue this endorsement?

Have they done any tours or promos with Bauer?

  • Common_Cents

and Perry taking a birther Arpaio on tour in NH, doing a long interview on Hannity radio together.

This needs to be brought out now and have Perry walk this birther endorsement back. This is red red meat for obama to energize his base.

  • oldlady

claims that ”a section of the people got FREE tuition” (as opposed to an instate break on) and that the good Governor forgot ”departmentS” (in the plural). IMHO her lies and gross exaggerations make her unworthy of wasting your time questioning.

  • gekster

That’s why in my first post to her I told her she was uninformed.
I was asking my questions in order to find out how much, and maybe to inform her, but she decided to run away from the questions.
When Perry first announced, and the Texas Dream Act first came up, I did exstensive reaserch on it, and probably know as much about it as anyone else.
I do that so I at least have a clue to what I am posting about.
