Background: Matt Lewis noted with no little bemusement that some folks working for Team Romney had a conference call where folks from organizations from the table below were invited and were given the opportunity to ask questions, while “Townhall.com, HotAir, Daily Caller, Washington Examiner, National Review, Weekly Standard, American Spectator, or Washington Times” got left out in the cold. Ed Morrissey over at Hot Air was willing enough to note that they didn’t give an invite… and I’ll chime in that – as far as I know – neither did RedState. Which doesn’t surprise me in the slightest, given that Team Romney apparently… well. I will be nice.
But never mind that. Conference calls are often themselves tools of a Lower power, anyway. Instead, let’s look again at who got invited, and who got to ask Team Romney questions:
| John Dickerson | CBS / Slate | Romney’s Achilles’ Heel |
| Mark Halperin | Time | |
| Lloyd Grove | The Daily Beast | South Carolina’s Orgy of Scandals |
| Evan McMorris-Santoro | Talking Points Memo | One Email Deleter Endorses Another In New Hampshire |
| David Corn | Mother Jones | Hey GOP 2012ers: You Lie!* |
| Phil Rucker | Washington Bob McDonnell’s Thesis | As GOP celebrates victories, ideological battles between moderates and conservatives remain |
I hope that my next statement is not precisely a surprise: these people are not Mitt Romney’s friends. They’re not friends of the GOP, either – the closest one to that would be Mark Halperin, and he’s neutral at best. Half of the media institutions that they work for would respond to a Republican on fire by throwing sodium at him (or, preferably, her). Which means, among other things, that these people will not help Mitt Romney acquire more primary votes from Republicans and conservatives. It’s foolish to think that any one of the media institutions listed above will break for the Republican in the general election, of course; but it’s downright insane to think that the average GOP primary voter will give a tinker’s dam one way or the other about how, say, The Daily Beast treats Romney. Heck, a screaming match between Romney and the Online Left – or better yet, the former hauling off and smacking a representative of the latter – would only help the former Governor.
[UPDATE] Jazz Shaw got Team Romney to respond in a somewhat, ah, nuanced fashion: they’re falling back on the old 2008 standby of “We had a queue!” Ah, yes, the queue. Let me just save time, on the off chance that somebody from the Romney campaign wants to push back here, too: the queue is the Romney campaign’s problem. Media outlets like TPM should not have been invited to Team Romney’s conference call in the first place. Because they hate us, and will take the opportunity given to them by this queue to ask slanted and poisonous questions.
I put up a list that touches on this topic and others, in fact: I recommend that people peruse it.

Whaaaaat?
jl9999 Saturday, December 10th at 11:21AM EDT (link)“…for no other reason than he is a Mormon..”
That makes no sense. The left hates conservatives of all stripes and Republicans in particluar. Even Mormon detractors among the Evangelicals do not hate Mormons. (Keep in mind bias does not always translate into bigotry except among leftists.) There is no specific reason for the Godless left to single out Mormons. They hate religion wherever they find it. Mormons Baptists, Catholics or Jews – they really love to hate Jews – it matters not.

And everyone of these writers will attack Romney w/ a vengenace if he's the nominee
circlegranch Sunday, December 11th at 7:32AM EDT (link)and religion will be a part of it. If Romney emerges from the Convention as the nominee, we’ll start seeing specials on TV about the history of the Mormon faith. They may not attach them directly to Romney but they’ll be enough to drive the majority of the Evangelical vote away.
Jennifer Rubin and several other ‘important’ journalists went after Perry over the ridiculous hunting camp rock to make sure that it was Perry, not the rock, that was painted as a really bad guy. Romney has escaped indepth scrutiny from the Left Media but if he is the nominee, he’ll have no more cover or get no more passes than any other Republican crowned the winner. The list of persons noted on this invite list all will do their mightiest to get Obama re-elected. The main pathway to his victory is to destroy the GOP candidate. They’ll go after Romney’s wife and her pricey imported horses, the new extravagant mansion being built in CA. Nothing will be sacred. Of course, they enjoyed this interview but it will all be used against Romney in the end.
All one has to do is visit MSNBC regularly and you’ll find which people the Left want to be our nominee. From early AM where Mika and Morning Joe sing the conservative praises of Jon Huntsman till the end of the programming day where they are now going hard on Newt, the Left Media (aided and abetted nowadays by the Right Media) wants to pick our candidate. There is no way that Mika Brezenski (sic) will ever vote for Huntsman or Romney, yet she frowns and almost comes to tears every morning talking about the stupidity of the tea party that they can’t understand how important it is to get a real conservative on the ticket. Obama has a boatload of attacks ready for Huntsman as they will paint him as a good friend. They will probably release emails between the two and all sorts of other compelling evidence to show that Huntsman really isn’t as conservative as we recall him to be as Utah’s gov. True or not (since when does truth matter), the Admin will successful label him as a moderate that has few policy differences with BHO. Same with Romney. While everybody plays nice now, are we ignorant enough to think that someone like David Corn will ever say ONE GOOD THING about the GOP nominee?
Apparently, Team Romney has thrown in the towel on trying to attract the tea party vote and has decided to try and win over the Left instead. This is a great expose but I am surprised to note that Hannity and Coulter appear not to have been invited.
At least we would expect the left wing press to attack

Just not Conservative for my taste, no fire in his belly. He also comes off as condescending. Why in the world would he do exclusives with liberal news/web sites!! I may not be big on Trump, I do have an idea of the kind of questions he will ask, the very same ones which we have yet to hear, questions which cut to the bone…It looks bad for the others not to attend, what are they afraid he will ask?

Mitt would be a dumber choice than McCain was.
ihateliberals Monday, December 12th at 11:07AM EDT (link)The reason is that we already made the mistake of not listening to the people and pushing a candidate on them. All of us conservatives knew from the moment McCain was nominated that we had lost the White House. If you are going to have a Liberal in the White House he might s well be from the liberal Party. The same scenario is happening with GOP pushing Romney. The GOP is a doomed Party. No matter what happens after the 2012 election we will see a new party come from the Republican party. The conservatives are feed up with RINO’s and untrustworthy Republicans that lie about being conservative. John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, John McCain, Olympia Snowe and many many more RINO Republicans. I would be more than glad if conservatives were to get our party back but the Elite Republican Guard won’t bend. I would rather have a conservative Party that loses for a few times than to continue with the bologna of the RNC one more day. If we chose Romney as the nominee then the country loses. If we elect either Obama or Romney the country loses. I hope and pray that enough conservatives vote this time to change the Senate and keep the House. A Conservative President would just be a bonus then.

Romney is not a true conservative,
nancysabet Friday, December 9th at 10:58PM EDT (link)which is why he can’t inspire the party base; he is essentially Democrat-Lite. He will most approach to governing and the liberal Democrat approach. Perry articulates this well enough on the campaign trail, and he’ll continue to improve in the crappy “30-second sound bite” formats that the contemporary media attempts to pass off these days as sorry-ass excuses for debates.
This just furthers the narrative that Romney is
westcoastpatriette (Diary) Friday, December 9th at 11:51PM EDT (link)actually afraid to face the base of the party as he knows he has too many flip-flop skeletons and non-conservative positions that he would rather not have to address.
The way he is handling all of this is alienating conservatives even more as he appears to be a coward on top of being a disingenuous Republican. That’s why so many wealthy people who run for office are unable to connect with people–they really live in a world so alien to most of us that they have to punt to try to understand us. That’s how Romney comes off to me–trying to fit in a culture that is foreign to him and the more he flip-flops to please, the more people despise him. A vicious cycle for him and one that is irreparable–and he knows it. So, the only way he can win is by using his money and power connections to create a smooth pathway to victory without having to satisfy the masses. Sad.
Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His name in the dance: let them sing praises unto Him with the timbrel and harp. Psalm 149:1-3

Hard Right?
jl9999 Saturday, December 10th at 11:34AM EDT (link)Answer one question for me. How does a hard right help get Romney elected in the general? Isn’t it bad enough that we have created this hard core social conservative nomination process? I have never understood why the Party did that. It makes it enormously more difficult for our guy to win if he has to defend some seriously nutty positions that only pander to the a small fraction of the voting public. I use the Constitutionalist’s memes as an example.
Well, I think he is too muddled to be viable.
snowshooze (Diary) Saturday, December 10th at 3:58PM EDT (link)He might do better under some other ticket.
I understand he might be considered a right winger back home… the bluest of the blue…
But he doesn’t much appeal across the Republican Conservatives.
He has spent years building his network and machine that still, cannot do much to bring in any fresh support.
I think he has all he will get and has had all he is going to get for quite some time.
Kinda like the Ron Paul followers.. they will follow him off a cliff.
If he crosses swords with Newt tonight… ( Does he have the guts? Does he have a choice? ) He’ll get gutted. The only thing he has going for him is they have some of the same problems.. as in the individual mandate. And both of them having been all over the map.
Anyway, Romney is trying to run the safe bet, right up the middle. Or left up the middle. He’s in sales. But he doesn’t know what to sell.

Here.
The Daily Caller piece you cite in your post is wrong.
Tonight (as we do with every call) we sent out a media advisory to our regular press inviting members of the media to join the call. We use a phone conferencing system to manage these calls.
Participants who join the call are then invited to ask a question after the opening comments by pressing “1” on their phones. Question are fielded on a first come, first serve basis. We do not screen out any media organization. Whoever notifies the operator by pressing ”1” first gets to ask their question first.
On tonight’s call we answered a every single question in the queue. Every reporter – conservative, liberal or nonpartisan – who wanted to ask a question got to ask one. Organizations that were not called on either didn’t press the number “1” or never joined the call in the first place.
Take it for what you will, a valid excuse or not.

Really the left are not voting in GOP primaries
tomatin Saturday, December 10th at 12:46AM EDT (link)A candidate trying to reach the middle is expected going into the general but trying to appeal to the lefty press now is nuts.
Not necessarily true:
rickbull Saturday, December 10th at 1:37AM EDT (link)Many states have “open” primaries where the voter only declares affiliation when going to vote. Since the only primaries for the D’s in 2012 will be for congressional seats (House and Senate). Many lefties will declare Republican and attempt to pick our nominee in those open states (I live in one). Romney may very well be courting those “lefty crossover votes.”
We do have the capability to get even, though. Find out which open states have vulnerable reps and senators, and see if we can get the worst D nominated for the seat.
This the reason that I advocate declaring party at registration rather than at the voting booth.

sunshinek67 (Diary) Saturday, December 10th at 11:37AM EDT (link)“Newt hit buzz saw in meeting with Right leaders” in the washingtonexaminer.com explains it pretty well. Also, the “HotGas” flub, which is hysterical in itself because that was MrEd’s 1st choice for blogsite name.
Clearly when you look at the Blitzer interview he was pressed for name, wasn’t sure and said something like I don’t know HotGas or something….but the media picks it up and says Oops, another one! Someone posted that a very plausible scenario is that a Perry aide probably showed him some data as he was entering the room for the interview. And Perry is supposed to be able to recite it into his robotic database to be available for perfect retrieval upon request. Only problem is this, Perry is not a robot, he is human and prone to “call his dogs by the wrong name”.
Have fun with Perry’s malapropisms or whatever you want to call it, he certainly has no problem with self deprecating humor. It works, people laugh, see that you are human and not some slick talking smooth politician. We need an agent for change, real change in a very broken Washington system, Perry represents that to many. Newt to a degree, including myself, but no track record of consistency exists. That is factual.
Looking at Perry’s record over the current “frontrunners”, I will take a gaffe here and there with a solid record, professional and personal, of conservative governing than a glib “smart” politician/unregistered lobbyist with little, or no executive experience and a checkered conservative record.

Romney is the Republican equivalent of Obama
Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Saturday, December 10th at 9:24AM EDT (link)Long on rhetoric, light in accomplishments, skilled at divisiveness and short on ideas. He contrasts his policies against opponents not on the basis of facts or merits, but using terms designed to provoke unmitigated emotion.
Romney has never displayed he can do anything other than bend with political winds to appease whimsical, destructive ends. Romney as a job creator? Really? When has Romney created numerous jobs? Proof?
I don’t even know what Romney’s policies are…today. He is a slippery chameleon that has co-opted the Left’s tactics.
“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

The truth is
tbrickert (Diary) Saturday, December 10th at 11:46AM EDT (link)I can understand the Romney camp not addressing RS? The hatred here for him is so thick anything he says would not be received. For instance, why not post the response Romney gave Hotair instead of interpreting it, here it is:
“The Daily Caller piece you cite in your post is wrong.
Organizations that were not called on either didn’t press the number “1” or never joined the call in the first place.”
Now as someone asked on Hotair, were the conservatives invited? Since the complaint is about who was permitted to ask questions, I have to assume they were.
A sample of a Romney presidency. reaching out, bowing
johnt Saturday, December 10th at 5:24PM EDT (link)being nice, apologetic, all to people who will or would never stop hating him. Really, it’s nothing personal, hate is in the leftist/liberals bones. It’s their oxygen, and even though Mitt is decidely a moderate he remains outside any hope of even toleration, much less respect.
There is a mental block in Repub ranks, a total inability, no matter how close or how long they’ve known and dealt with these, our enemies, to have a simple awareness of this hate. Lambs to the slaughter.

A Few Points on Mitt's Thinking:
pcscipio Saturday, December 10th at 6:20PM EDT (link)Politics is about winning and losing. Mitt’s aiming to win the general election.
Not everything to the left of Red State or the other Republican/Conservative new media are considered “liberal”; CBS, Time, and Slate are generally thought of as middle of the road, and The Daily Beast, TPM, and Mother Jones are very, very popular sites.
Mitt will never, ever appeal to the Republican Conservative base to any great extent, so his strategy is probably to get past the Republican primaries and win the nomination by waiting for Newt to self-destruct and for the clout of his Eastern big-contributor money to kick in.
Recent polling data in key swing states indicate that the number of voters identifying themselves as independents is growing, that Obama is facing a serious challenge in battleground states, and that independent voters will very likely be the key to the 2012 election.
Many of the voters he needs to win the general visit these websites. Mitt’s just getting an early start.

Reagan didn’t get all that many more dems in 80 than Ford did in 76. Reagan got 26% of dems in 80, Ford got 22% in 76. No one ever talks about Ford dems, He got fewer dems than Nixon did in 72. Nixon got 64% of dems in 72 but no one ever talks about Nixon dems, who were the Reagan dems before Reagan.
Since 92 and Clinton no GOP candidate has really gotten that many dems om the level of a Reagan/Ford/Nixon
The parties are much more pure today on both sides. McCain actually got more dems than Obama got Republicans.
Neil: what am I saying that is so controversial. Why do you name call like the Alinsky liberals?
reaganbuckley Saturday, December 10th at 7:16PM EDT (link)1) Yes it is a primary, but the candidate will eventually run in the general and often the candidate will need to expand his/base to win.
2) I (and many others) like candidates who are willing to mix it up with people who don’t agree with them. It can harden a candidates convictions and make them a stronger candidate in the general. Newt’s usually willing to mix it up and I think Romney is trying to show he can too.
3) I don’t think Time magazine falls under the radical leftist category.
4) Please refrain from name calling. They are the tactics of the Alinsky liberals.
5) What am I saying that is so controversial? That a candidate should expand from his/her base to win an election. Why is that wrong?

Debates
superpatriot Saturday, December 10th at 11:17PM EDT (link)While debates are good and fun to watch, I’m getting a little sick and tired of the empahsis placed on them.
It takes away from the real, important goal. Beating Barack Obama.
That being said, we want to elect a candidate who can represent the republican party and comfortably dethrone our current white house resident.
Perry is my primary choice. However, debates are not his greatest strength. He did OK tonight but did not look all that comfortable and persausive. Although he has a good platform and good ideas, I think he would have a tough time presenting these to the public in a debate with Obama.
Gingrich has a history. We all know that. However, he looks incredibly smooth in virutally everything he does. I mean, he discussed values and infidelity on stage without batting an eyelid.
Romney, Paul, Bachman, and Santorum will all be done.
Gingrich will be our nominee.
It is our job to unite and consolidate behind him so he can crush Obama next year.
Perry just isnt a good nat'l candidate
jaykali (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 6:37PM EDT (link)He has had so many gaffes and he just doesn’t sound knowledgeable of all the various things you have to know to seem presidential. Maybe it doesnt matter that he couldnt list all 9 supreme court justices but I promise Obama & Newt could. It just makes you look dumb. It was the same problem Cain had. It’s just part of the deal running for president.
Once again, it was 8 justices that voted to
center77 (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 6:52PM EDT (link)ban prayer in schools, one voted against, so that is what Perry was talking about. One thing I know is that I feel that it does not matter as much as record and plan. Character would be one of the best weapons for and against a candidate.

center77 (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 6:57PM EDT (link)I strongly feel our cahcnes of beating Obama will be very low. The fact is he has a lot of baggage, and when people go to the voter box, they will judge a candidate by what they have done, My mother said it best the other day, she cannot go through another mess like the one that had Newt and the Congress goin gafter Clinton because of his cheating and lyin gabout it. I see no reason to think that if Newt is our nominee that we will not spend a good portion of the next year talking about all the things that he has done to show us he has character issues.

Gingrich can't beat Obama in a debate
David123 (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 7:20PM EDT (link)if Obama is “too busy doing important presidential business” to debate him.
If I was Barrack Obama, I’d be “too busy” to debate Newt. And I’d have Michelle out telling everybody what a wonderful husband and father I am. And I’d have some of my people, and all the people I could persuade in the MSM going all-out negative on Newt.
David123
I feel like it's time to hitch the wagon to the Newt train
jaykali (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 6:33PM EDT (link)It’s kind of Newt’s race to lose at this point with the non-Romney vote consolidating to Newt. And he does say things that get him in trouble.
I really want a winner and I’m nervous ab Newt but at least he is a guy ppl can rally around. Conservatives hate Romney and have warmed up to Newt. I think his embracing of the Tea Party has served him well.
I think we shall see if grassroots picks a better candidate than the establishment. It appears that grassroots is winning this round by not electing the ‘John McCain’ of this election cycle. And if the trends hold (big IF) but lets say they do it would of course by Newt v Obama.
While I do think ppl overestimate Newt’s ability to kill Obama in debates, obviously that will be a big strength of his. I say ‘overestimate’ bc these debates are going to have George Stephanopoulos and Brian Williams and other shills moderating so they will protect ‘their guy’. Believe me there will be plenty of questions that make Newt look bad and Obama look good (do we remember the SNL skits of the Clinton/Obama debates last time?). That being said I love how Newt takes on the moderators so even if Obama is able to only expose himself to a few debates (which would be in his interest) and stack it so that all the moderators are in his corner, I think Newt more than anyone has the ability to get his message and attacks levied.
I fear a little bit how young people are going to get enthused by an old fat white guy but they dont decide elections. And winning national elections is more and more ab a) articulating ideas and b) inspiring the electorate. Obama did both last time and he was good at articulating ideas (even if they were hollow) like ‘healthcare for everybody!’ and was very inspiring of course.
Newt is very very very good at articulating ideas and thinking on his feet. His interviews, stump speeches, debates, etc I think will serve him well if he cannot go off the deep end as he does sometimes.
Onto his flaws which are many. Flip flops to me dont matter as much bc you can demonstrate flip flops on any candidate. Religion, marital affairs, etc dont matter as much but the marital affair stuff is definitely going to hurt Newt. Hopefully he could make up some ground by persuading Women with his ideas.
And so I can talk myself into Newt. I know this batch of candidates isnt great and Newt has neither money nor organization but he can piece it together by the general. So all is not lost. It will definitely be a David v Goliath type of showdown but Obama is so unpopular it just might work. We’ll see.
You've been saying this since you first joined, more or less.

We'll see if it works - Newt gets himself into jams
jaykali (Diary) Monday, December 12th at 11:07AM EDT (link)And Obama ads will play soundbites of all these conservative politicians saying Newt wouldn’t be a good president. I will be very curious to see if Newt’s ideas and attacks on Obama can make it through or if he will get mired in defense of past marriages, flip flips, etc. Not sure, I would think the electorate is more about ‘what have you done for me lately and what is your plan for the future’ but who knows?
I wish SOMEONE would ask Obama how taxing millionaires is going to close a 1.5 trillion dollar deficit hole. He NEVER has to give specifics. All he says is ‘fair share’ and we are supposed to believe that that is going to make any sort of real difference? Frustrating.
that's
anonymousbosch Sunday, December 11th at 8:22PM EDT (link)that’s why Newt wants the 7 “Lincoln Doglas” Debates. There won’t be any moderators. It’ll just be the two of them.
If Obama declines he looks scared and cowardly. If he accepts, Newt has him in a debate with no moderator in fornt of the public for 90 minutes.
A very good startegy,
Obama will accept. If he doesn’t he loses.
Obama's going to play it smart
jaykali (Diary) Monday, December 12th at 9:32AM EDT (link)They are obsessed with the politics of everything. Remember McCain wanted townhall style debates? All Obama has to do is say no. I think you will only get a few debates and they will be NBC, ABC & CNN, all with friendly moderators so it’s not going to be Obama standing up there taking a beating.
We have to hope he gets a little overconfident. It’s not often you get a head to head chance to attack the president so Newt will really need to impress. I think the debates we have will be pretty important. If Obama stumbles it could be a big swing for Republicans. If he plays it safe with his filibuster non-answers and talking points that he’ll get away with bc moderators don’t give him follow-up questions then all he has to do is not screw up.

blarman Monday, December 12th at 10:43AM EDT (link)#1 Why do you care? So Romney goes off and tries to pander to a bunch of nobody media groups and gets laughed at. Aren’t you glad you weren’t included in that bunch?

#3 If Romney can’t win the nomination, why waste your time?
It seems to me that pouting about being left out is rather petulant and childish. Instead, why don’t you ask for an exclusive interview? That is, if he’s at all relevant anymore… Good grief, and I thought liberals whined a lot.

Its not about who doesn’t like you, its about those who do and the undecided which is one reason why excluding media backfires. This shows what a temper tantrum prone overly sensitive whiner Romney is. Could such a hot head be capable of handling the daily bashing as president? Remember this is the same Mittens who argues with constituents.
RomneyCare is Right Wing Socialism –
Romney “severely conservative”? That’s the opposite of a “compassionate conservative” like George W. Bush? Actually, we know what a severely conservative is. It’s Dick Cheney and Mitt Romney is no Dick Cheney.
WHY DO YOU HATE MITT ROMNEY SO ?
sterling2 Tuesday, December 13th at 1:00AM EDT (link)You are going to diasprove of certain celebrities and politicians etc. from time to time; it’s your work . That is understandable. But your attitude towards Mitt Romney is more than just criticism, or negativity. Your attitude is oppssessive. Your blood-lust for his failure, pain and defeat is not normal, and you probably have been thinking it doesn’t show.
If there is one great “wrong” with Mitt Romney it is that he is too perfect. This is a prime target for abuse- the haters have found their whipping post — it couldn’t be easy for a really nice guy like Romney.
You won’t admitt this : you can give reason after reason why Romney is such a bad person, but underneath it all–YOU KNOW that you hate a Mormon–especially a Mormon president . THAT is the ONLY absolute truth about you and your rancour towards him.
And don’t underestimate Mitt Romney–he’s a man who gets what he wants. Beneath that coy smile and smooth demeanor is a strategist . Mitt Romney is nice –LIKE A FOX .
