Most here seem to be in agreement that there’s nothing Romney can do to change their minds. That’s exactly what did him in during the last primary.

It’s just probably starting to sink in on the Mittster..

First they know Romney just isn’t liked by the GOP base. So they think the whole Romney electablily argument is bunk.

Second they know Romney will be more harmless to liberal causes in office. They all know Romney will never fully repeal Obamacare because it’s Romney’s biggest legislative accomplishment in office too. They know Romney will bow to public pressure and never do anything to end entitlements. The lefties actually think Obama is too centrist so he’s not much different from Romney.

The left-wingnut? Really? Why hasn’t he been declared strictly quarantined by all Repubs? Right thing to do and no downside since no one who might possibly vote Republican except by mistake reads/watches/listens to Comrade Corn.

Romney, in all his political genius, is such a lock for the Republican nomination that we haven’t even had the primaries yet and he’s already pandering to the center!

Lucky are we to have one with such political acumen as our de-facto leader.

Which has an open primary. He is competing with Huntsman, who has the money to go long distance. The media keeps saying this will be a long primary. But it’s much riskier for Romney, if he’s weak in NH.

Gingrich is eating into his lead, and suddenly he isn’t looking so inevitable. He has been forced to run further to the right, playing harder in IA now, and he has to remind his friends on the left that he doesn’t mean what he says to the right.

on Newt? It is brutal! I think it is quite interesting that Mitt or Willard is hitting Newt hard right before a debate. Do you think Mitt will actually attack Newt? Mitt always comes across in debates like he is above the fray, except the time when Rick Perry threw him off. Mitt comes across as spineless but maybe not???

Long on rhetoric, light in accomplishments, skilled at divisiveness and short on ideas. He contrasts his policies against opponents not on the basis of facts or merits, but using terms designed to provoke unmitigated emotion.

Romney has never displayed he can do anything other than bend with political winds to appease whimsical, destructive ends. Romney as a job creator? Really? When has Romney created numerous jobs? Proof?

I don’t even know what Romney’s policies are…today. He is a slippery chameleon that has co-opted the Left’s tactics.

I mean, nuts vote too, they are a constituency, their babble and foam should not shut them out of the arena. Romney is reaching out to the ravers of America, betting that they can get a pass on Election Day from the nut house. Smart! Maybe they will heap less abuse on him.

I can understand the Romney camp not addressing RS? The hatred here for him is so thick anything he says would not be received. For instance, why not post the response Romney gave Hotair instead of interpreting it, here it is:

Politics is about winning and losing. Mitt’s aiming to win the general election.

Not everything to the left of Red State or the other Republican/Conservative new media are considered “liberal”; CBS, Time, and Slate are generally thought of as middle of the road, and The Daily Beast, TPM, and Mother Jones are very, very popular sites.

Mitt will never, ever appeal to the Republican Conservative base to any great extent, so his strategy is probably to get past the Republican primaries and win the nomination by waiting for Newt to self-destruct and for the clout of his Eastern big-contributor money to kick in.

Recent polling data in key swing states indicate that the number of voters identifying themselves as independents is growing, that Obama is facing a serious challenge in battleground states, and that independent voters will very likely be the key to the 2012 election.

1) Yes it is a primary, but the candidate will eventually run in the general and often the candidate will need to expand his/base to win.

2) I (and many others) like candidates who are willing to mix it up with people who don’t agree with them. It can harden a candidates convictions and make them a stronger candidate in the general. Newt’s usually willing to mix it up and I think Romney is trying to show he can too.

3) I don’t think Time magazine falls under the radical leftist category.

4) Please refrain from name calling. They are the tactics of the Alinsky liberals.

5) What am I saying that is so controversial? That a candidate should expand from his/her base to win an election. Why is that wrong?

While debates are good and fun to watch, I’m getting a little sick and tired of the empahsis placed on them.

It takes away from the real, important goal. Beating Barack Obama.

That being said, we want to elect a candidate who can represent the republican party and comfortably dethrone our current white house resident.

Perry is my primary choice. However, debates are not his greatest strength. He did OK tonight but did not look all that comfortable and persausive. Although he has a good platform and good ideas, I think he would have a tough time presenting these to the public in a debate with Obama.

Gingrich has a history. We all know that. However, he looks incredibly smooth in virutally everything he does. I mean, he discussed values and infidelity on stage without batting an eyelid.

Romney, Paul, Bachman, and Santorum will all be done.

Gingrich will be our nominee.

It is our job to unite and consolidate behind him so he can crush Obama next year.

It’s kind of Newt’s race to lose at this point with the non-Romney vote consolidating to Newt. And he does say things that get him in trouble.

I really want a winner and I’m nervous ab Newt but at least he is a guy ppl can rally around. Conservatives hate Romney and have warmed up to Newt. I think his embracing of the Tea Party has served him well.

I think we shall see if grassroots picks a better candidate than the establishment. It appears that grassroots is winning this round by not electing the ‘John McCain’ of this election cycle. And if the trends hold (big IF) but lets say they do it would of course by Newt v Obama.

While I do think ppl overestimate Newt’s ability to kill Obama in debates, obviously that will be a big strength of his. I say ‘overestimate’ bc these debates are going to have George Stephanopoulos and Brian Williams and other shills moderating so they will protect ‘their guy’. Believe me there will be plenty of questions that make Newt look bad and Obama look good (do we remember the SNL skits of the Clinton/Obama debates last time?). That being said I love how Newt takes on the moderators so even if Obama is able to only expose himself to a few debates (which would be in his interest) and stack it so that all the moderators are in his corner, I think Newt more than anyone has the ability to get his message and attacks levied.

I fear a little bit how young people are going to get enthused by an old fat white guy but they dont decide elections. And winning national elections is more and more ab a) articulating ideas and b) inspiring the electorate. Obama did both last time and he was good at articulating ideas (even if they were hollow) like ‘healthcare for everybody!’ and was very inspiring of course.

Newt is very very very good at articulating ideas and thinking on his feet. His interviews, stump speeches, debates, etc I think will serve him well if he cannot go off the deep end as he does sometimes.

Onto his flaws which are many. Flip flops to me dont matter as much bc you can demonstrate flip flops on any candidate. Religion, marital affairs, etc dont matter as much but the marital affair stuff is definitely going to hurt Newt. Hopefully he could make up some ground by persuading Women with his ideas.

And so I can talk myself into Newt. I know this batch of candidates isnt great and Newt has neither money nor organization but he can piece it together by the general. So all is not lost. It will definitely be a David v Goliath type of showdown but Obama is so unpopular it just might work. We’ll see.

#1 Why do you care? So Romney goes off and tries to pander to a bunch of nobody media groups and gets laughed at. Aren’t you glad you weren’t included in that bunch?

#2 Given the amount of antipathy towards Romney from the authors here at Red State, why WOULD he invite you? Of course, given that the others he invited hate him, too, maybe it wouldn’t have been such a mismatch.

#3 If Romney can’t win the nomination, why waste your time?

It seems to me that pouting about being left out is rather petulant and childish. Instead, why don’t you ask for an exclusive interview? That is, if he’s at all relevant anymore… Good grief, and I thought liberals whined a lot.
