FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

RS Interview: Ricky Gill (R CAND, CA-09 PRI)

Before we talk about this race, some quick background on this district: as you probably know, California did some pretty severe internal redistricting after the 2010 Census. What you probably didn‘t know – but probably suspected anyway – is that the Democrats who run the state managed to pervert was supposed to be a nonpartisan process by the blatant use of astroturf, front groups, and damaging and/or starving the ability of redistricting commissions to detect both.

The not-exactly-known-for-being-nice-to-conservatives-and-libertarians group ProPublica has a lot of the gory details; held up for particular disgust in that article is the case of Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney, who had on the payroll Paul Mitchell, a redistricting consultant who just happened (according to ProPuiblica) to draw the maps for a supposed grassroots site called OneSanJoaquin. OneSanJoaquin provided astroturf arguments to the commission designing the CA-09 district: “[t]ranscripts show that more than a dozen people delivered or sent the canned testimony to the commission, which accepted it without question. There’s no sign that commissioners were aware some of the letters had been downloaded from the mysterious OneSanJoaquin page. ” End result? McNerney is now literally moving from an old district that he barely won to a new one that’s scored as D+7. Yes, literally: the man doesn’t even live in this district.

And thus we come to Ricky Gill, who is somewhat determined to not let McNerney do that without a fight. Ricky is a local resident who was appointed to California’s State Board of Education by the previous governor; and while he’s very young (when he announced his candidacy earlier this year he was only 24) he’s already demonstrated an ability to outraise his opponent*. We talked about the race and the district:

Again, Ricky’s site is here. You may want to keep track of this race on general principles: if the ProPublica article is confirmed there may be a lot of repercussions down the line.

*Quick note there: notice how the Capitol Weekly’s ‘redistricting expert’ is, hey, Paul Mitchell! Who ProPublica fingers as being the guy that drew the redistricting maps… that Paul Mitchell liked so much! And that’s how this sort of thing gets perpetuated.

Ricky Gill voted with the liberal democrats when he was the student. Representative on the California board of education. His parents ran a clinic “the small business he talks about” picketed by Operation Rescue and now claim they were always pro-life. He fund raised for Restore the Delta” a Sierra Club backed group who gets guest appearances from George Miller. That is the California smelt issue you may have heard about. Other than the 24 year old’s access to his dads money he is not a serious candidate. Local Republicans are just shaking their heads. There is a viable republican candidate in the race. John Mcdonald is 43yr old high tech executive with 3 successful startups with over a billion dollars of market capitalization. He has actual life experience in the private sector and in family life. He’s been married for 21 years and has 4 daughters. Most importantly, his conservatism is authentic. www.johnmcdonald2012.com

I have become more and more convinced that the way we elect people to the House of Represenatives has to be reformed.

The dems have pulled this dirty trick in CA and AZ, while in IA and IL dems are squeezing the Republicans without hiding behind the “non-partisan” lie. Meanwhile, in PA, VA and NC Republicans are rightly re-organizing the maps to reflect the state’s conservatives, but they are also engaging in some chicanery as seen by the division of Ashville into two disricts to deny the people that live their a representative (they may be peaceniks but their community deserves a voice)

Here in Texas, the two parties have a pretty buddy-buddy system that ensures the re-election of Republicans and Democrats.

The whole process has to change.

Young man we need more diversity in the party especially in CA to rebuild. Gov Haley recently hosted a fundraiser for him. He has proven to be a great fundraiser and I am impressed by way he speaks.

I am glad you posted something on so called Independent Comission Moe its a reminder to all of us to never let these so called Independent Commissions come to pass because we have seen in CA, AZ, NJ, and ME how they always side with the Democrats. I hope you do front cover on this its a total disgrace at what these slimy Dems have done in California and how its gonna cost us some seats.

California will lose between 3 and 6 seats in the House – not so much due to the reapportionment process as the demographic shifts since hte last census. Gill has a good chance to take this seat – he is well financed, smart (Princeton; UC Law), a second generation immigrant, a Spanish speaker, and well connected – Young guns; Jeb Bush, Nikki Haley. He is what the California Republicans need to develop to remain relevant.
