What are the depths of Peter Gleick’s depravity in the Heartland global warming smear attack? [UPDATED]

[UPDATE: The preliminary steps of removing Peter Gleick from positions of authority and respect have begun: he's 'resigned' from his position with the National Center for Science Education, and his scientific ethics task force chairmanship(!) for the American Geophysical Union.  One wonders whether groups like the MacArthur Fellows Program and NAS will insist that Gleick cut all ties from them, as well.  Nobody's really expecting the Pacific Institute to join in, of course: it's a well-known reliable quote machine for the American Left.]

OK, quick background: last week there was a bit of fuss when a variety of documents appeared that purported to show that there was some sort of nefarious global warming ‘denialist’ (that’s what a Lefty calls somebody who has noticed that, hey, the temperature’s not actually rising the way that people told us it would) conspiracy centered around the Heartland Institute. The Heartland Institute was not amused by this, and has been making it clear that at least one document was a pathetic forgery. This latter point has generally been conceded by all the players, if tacitly, and the great walkback is beginning. I recommend Watts Up With That for those looking to monitor further developments: that site has been all over this story.

But let’s go back to what got revealed, for a moment. The documents can be grouped into two categories: a variety of materials that global warming advocate (and lecturer on ethics*) Peter Gleick admitted stealing from Heartland**; and the aforementioned pathetically faked document. Since we now know that not even Gleick is standing by the provenance of said document, let us ignore it completely. What it says is irrelevant. It has no bearing. I did not even read it before my summary below of the documents that Gleick stole, solely to keep it from contaminating my assessment. So, what’s in those documents?

  • Fundraising plan – confidential budget and fundraising information that has nothing to do with Heartland’s positions on climate change policy (thus, not germane). Also, this was a general fundraising plan, not one specifically concentrating on climate change.
  • 2012 Budget -…Umm, it’s their general budget. No line items for Sooper Sekret Globeal Wharming Projekt here. Just salary/line item information that’s nobody’s business except Heartland’s.
  • January 17, 2012 Director’s Agenda – They read a bunch of reports at that one. Which happens at every meeting, everywhere, and will continue to do so until the end of time, amen.
  • Notice of January 17, 2012 – I assume that it’s here to get more phone numbers into the internet stream.
  • IRS Tax forms – Man, I hope that whoever is hosting these documents has a good lawyer.
  • October 18, 2011 Director’s meeting – See the entry for the January 17, 2012 Director’s agenda.
  • Board of Directors contact list – Hey, let’s make sure that Heartland staffers get a lot of personalized hate mail/stalkers/harassment! Smooth move there, Peter Gleick.

…In other words? Nothing. No conspiracies, no nefarious plans, nothing really of particular interest to outsiders – except, of course, for contact information for Heartland’s top staff, which is provided in handy-dandy format for the Left’s near-psychopaths to use to try to make a bunch of climate “denialists’” lives miserable. Which is really the point to this sort of thing; it’s not actually about the climate, and it’s not even really about the politics. It’s about shutting people up.

What makes it even more annoying, of course, is that the people that want to do the shutting up in this case aren’t, well, very bright. Megan McArdle took this memo apart, and effectively concluded that it was written after the fact by somebody who was under the mistaken belief that they could successfully reproduce the tone of global warming skeptics and conservative/libertarian activists. Speaking in a semi-professional manner; no, most people can’t. The ability to successfully imitate people that you despise – truly imitate them, and not just lampoon them – is exceptionally difficult, because in order to think like somebody you have to empathize with them. The problem there is that it’s hard to be empathic toward somebody whom you hate.

Well. That’s the generic problem. The specific problem for wayward ethicist Peter Gleick – not to mention the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Sciences, given that Gleick’s unethical behavior directly reflects on both groups – is that he’s claiming that he got the original document before he stole the other ones. Which should be easy to check; he kept the email, right? And it’s on a server that can be checked, right? – And, given that Gleick is so cavalier with other people’s property rights, surely he’ll make it very easy for investigators to see whether or not he’s guilty of libel, as well as identity and intellectual property theft…

Moe Lane (crosspost)

*You know. Ethics. It’s the meta-concept under which we categorize thoughts and precepts like, oh, Thou shalt not steal.

**I quote Gleick: “…I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name.” The organization would have apparently not provided that information to this particular… researcher… voluntarily; and, given what Gleick did with that information once he illicitly acquired it, you can hardly blame Heartland.

“Why should I give them more of my data to misrepresent to the public?” (HT: Michael “Hockey Stick Curve” Mann)

The fraud and misrepresentation and class warfare attacks being used through this lie is an interesting thing.

The question is: is this overblown theory going to be successful in taking over more of our lives to the left’s insatiable appetite for control or will it fully collapse under the weight of the corruption and fraud that has to perpetuated to keep the lie going?

  • http://www.twitter.com/AWG9_yoyo yoyo

…I guess right after the Weather Stabilization Pegasus(eses) take flight.

My guess, it will collapse before it gets much larger. $5 and $6 gasoline tends to cause such things.

He stopped being a scientist and started being a dirty trickster.

He should send his resume to WikiLeaks. Sounds like a good fit for them.

Glieck should be prosecuted and punished.

If you have to lie for your cause, then it is a pretty crappy cause.

The people in positions of power have always known that AGW is bogus. They aren’t concerned about the seas rising and 50 million climate refugees floating offshore. They just need to convince the useful idiots to become true believers of whatever the new threat to life on earth is, so that the idiots will surrender their liberty for safety. And, of course, the idiots will insist that we surrender our liberty too – before it’s too late!!!!!!

The bigger and scarier the lie, the more easily the idiot sheep are shorn.

  • Next93

The line that they think should make us willing to give up our liberties is usually “But what if you’re wrong?”.

Well, I’ll bite – what if I’m wrong? If there really IS a link between man-generated CO2 (and cow-generated methane) and global temperature, and we don’t adopt a cap-and-trade plan (and thereby enable a trillion-dollar carbon trading industry), then according to the self-same models that purport that CO2 is destroying the planet, we’ll have delayed the crisis by about 5 years over the next century.

How about this – if I’m wrong,we can use the money we’ll save by not implementing Al Gore’s get-rich-quick scheme to solve problems that you claim that warming might cause – like moving people out of coastal flood planes, implementing irrigation programs, and improving the standard of living in the developing world.

Some RedState readers will remember that I have several articles here ( http://www.redstate.com/russellc/ ) about the long-term smear of skeptic climate scientists, and the central character in them is anti-skeptic book author Ross Gelbspan. Although Moe doesn’t mention it above, this Heartland flap appears to have originated at the enviro-activist site Desmogblog, where guess who is their star blogger? Ross Gelbspan.

I detail those troubling ties and how far back they go in an online article which appeared on 2/19 at Steve Milloy’s site, “In Case of Heart[land] Attack, Break Glass” http://junkscience.com/2012/02/19/in-case-of-heartland-attack-break-glass/

The Blaze, one thing jumpeed right out at me: How can this lying POS say he doesn’t know who sent him the original info? I am betting he does in fact know and can’t tell anyone because that is the person’s identity that he used to get more information in the first place.

Looking at the big government tyrants who made a point of telling America that people who use fictitous names when writing on the internet blogs, sites, etc are in fact liable to face criminal charges, (also when posting on Facebook while using an account where you protect your real identity)this “senior fellow fraudster” has certainly warranted chargs of E-fraud to say the least .He will never be charged with anything, as he is a puppet-master of the left, and laws only apply to those nasty evil right-wing extremists who demand that the government spend less than what it takes in each year.

A PhD hydrologist neighbor of mine just sent me a article by a Australian scientist who noted that last year’s (May 2011) 4-day eruption of a volcano in Iceland wiped out5 years of all manmade carbon footprint reduction efforts undertaken on Earth. He then notes that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in its entire YEARS on Earth.

While this has no direct relationship to any alleged sculduggery suggested by this article, it does merit consideration by anyone planing to social engineer human life in ways that severely alter mankind’s quality of life or his/her achievement of it.

This sort of real world perspective of man’s true place in the universe is the global warmers’ most inconvenient truth.

to the fraud and level of corruption of the scientists and media. The media were far more interested in Governor Sarah Palin’s emails than the ClimateGate emails. I think its time the GOP took it to task with hearings that put scientists on the record while reminding them any lie spoken or sent to congress could result in punishment via the courts. Subpoena number one to Al Gore.

with exposure usually comes remorse, usually. Glieck may be sorrier though for being caught. I visit the dump once or twice a week to spread cheer and brotherhood, it’s the least I can do for the retarded.
However, does any Normal Person expect anyone, anyone at all on the left to admit to doubt, admitting to error you can forget about. It’s an old story, you start to lie, you can’t stop. Especially if you have psychopathic tenedencies.
The wall of climate mythology continues to crack, one of the greatest scams, if not the greatest, continues to fall. With backs to the wall expect more viciousness than usual.

I presume they may also want to de-industrialize us. This would be very fortunate for some other nations-who will certainly not curtail their mfg-like China. Making us poorer-just as good.

More to the point: I heard the 1980′s volcano in Mexico-Chacon- spewed more carbon oxygen etc. compounds into the air than man has since he has been on earth-about 100 times more. That is 10,000%. So man altogether has spit out one hundreth of one volcano worth of global warming effluvients. That puts a period to man’s causitive responsibility-if it is even warming-which is dubious. Best, dlc

  • dennis1111

    Chacon = 100 times man’s. That is 10,000%

Only arrogant contol freaks (and worse) can think that there is man made climate change.
Fortunately this mania seems to be on the downslope.
I look forward to being able to laugh at them all in the near future.

…it may not be coming anytime in the near future….

a few weeks ago, the Morgantown WV city council unanimously passed a resolution supporting Lisa Jackson, Obama, and the EPa for their efforts to stop global warming.

then…..a few days later, a major energy company announced it was closing five electricity generating plants in this area, purely because of the aforementioned anti-global warming efforts….

really bad timing, there, city council….so they immediately declared the thing had been passed without being read – sound familiar? – and they had no idea and so on and so forth…and scheduled an emergency meeting for a “do-over”….

result? the thing was voted down….yay…..but it was four to three….it almost went through again….

point being…..how do we force these government people to actually PAY ATTENTION TO THE REAL SCIENCE?????

….and yes, i am hoarding light bulbs….i have no faith at all that the ban will be lifted…..

I heard on the radio the day after Mt St Helen’s blew up that it spewed out more pollution that all American factories did since America’s first factory. Others heard the same comment independently and in our later discussion, all agreed that that report was never broadcast again. EPA silenced their own report because it contradicted what they were claiming, that man-made pollution far exceeds natural pollution. As far as I know, EPA have never identified any natural or background pollution. Because of that, no city in America will never meet their “standards” and we will forever have that scientifically dishonest bureaucracy driving manufacturing offshore. The greed and deception of the EPA is more responsible for America’s collapse than any other cause.

the problem is that our kids are being indoctrinated with this stuff int he public school system. I had a public speaking class last semester and during one session of speeches, no less than three or four speakers (recently out of high school) used carbon footprints as arguments for whatever they were speaking for. An example is one speech where the kid was talking about smart phones and spouted out all of the energy that was being saved by using that instead of a laptop, desk top, GPS receiver etc complete with numbers and all. It is obvious that they believe this as if it were a religion. It may be obvious to a lot of us that this is a giant hoax but I believe that getting the masses of “Y Genrs” to realize that their religion is a lie is going to be a very hard task to complete. Telling them AGW is BS would get you the treatment as if you were a blasphemer just as if someone were to tell me God does not exist. The tone is that you are stupid if you do not believe in AGW.

  • funwithknives

It IS ” The Religion.” No Ifs, Ands or Buts. Or as close to Religion as small, closed minds can come up with.
Just as Fundamentalist Islam {or any other Faction of an agenda -driven choosing} Bastardizes and Discredits the message and the messengers, in a like manner, so does this swarm of harpies, and their M. O .
They know ,and remember that so many are dupes/useful idiots, and regularly will jump to conclusions if it squares to “what they believe.”
Facts won’t sway them and excuses will abound until your premise becomes “their idea.” Sadly this often is the case when, and only when, it affects the one you address.(like being fired when your job disappears due to perceived AGW)

Otherwise, you are just talking to a wall.

Good or bad,you well find the truth here.

The Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) is what its name suggests: an international panel of nongovernment scientists and scholars who have come together to understand the causes and consequences of climate change. Because we are not predisposed to believe climate change is caused by human greenhouse gas emissions, we are able to look at evidence the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ignores. Because we do not work for any governments, we are not biased toward the assumption that greater government activity is necessary.

The UN warned us, I think in1988, We had 10 years, then we’d be under water.Did not happen! Al Goard is so scared about the water level that he bought a beach home for security. It’s that or he is running a insure scam to collect his flood insurance.

It is for all puposes a religion, a faith past questioning, replete with dogma, protocol, it’s own saints, projected hopes and heaven, it’s outsiders or sinners, it’s bible the media, and make no mistake, it’s retribution.
And they scorn the properly religious.
Did I leave out fanaticism? Only because the Normal , who locate their faith in other, sanctified places, are so accused. That’s not very tolerant of our friends on the Left.

    Why wait?

  • huapakechi

Will there be a prolonged investigation into the exact means that Peter Gleick managed to acquire these documents?

I would expect nothing less than the ongoing witch hunt that has resulted from the Climategate I and II releases, never mind those exposed the fraud and corruption of the high priests of global warming.

On the other hand, that expose is likely the reason that there is such vitriolic animosity against the person(s) who released those communications to the public.
