The “Don’t You Love The Citizens United Case?” Friday Open Thread.

I mean, I personally love the Citizens United case. Aside from liking free speech, it seems to be a positive spur to creativity. Check out this latest spy spoof from American Crossroads, with Barack Obama starring as the almost-urbane secret agent trying to fumble-finger the rest of us into giving up our missile defense plans:

For the record: no, really, Vladimir Putin really does go parading around shirtless, and on a horse. (shrug) It apparently plays well in Russia.  As does planning to give away the store on missile defense; which should cheer up the President.  At least the notion is popular somewhere

Open thread.

The Left completely mis-understands Citizens United.

Citizens United was a great First Amendment decision.

This ad really gets the point across. I think it should be put on youtube.

  • http://www.thehayride.com MacAoidh

    …disagree about the ad.

The hot mic incident wasn’t funny, it was terrifying and outrageous. To make a funny ad out of that just falls flat. And more, it trivializes it.

A better ad would be to bunch the hot mic incident with the leak of Israel’s air bases in Azerbaijan into an ad which seeks to scare the poo out of everybody who has a clue.

An even better ad than that would present Obama’s betrayal of the Israelis and ask what Jewish American voter would even consider supporting this man in November.

This makes two TV shows he’s quit on in 15 months:

When you’re too wack for Al Gore, you’re just plain too wack for TV.

  • clintonformccain

What, pray tell, is Current TV?

  • pcscipio

But would someone please explain why it would appeal to any informed person when: 1) what Obama said to Medvedev is how international affairs always have been and always will be conducted, and 2) what is our national interest in having an ABM system deployed in and for Europe? Really, if we can use that system as a bargaining chip with Russia, why not?

The Citizens United case involved difficult balancings of freedoms, and even if you think they came up with the best possible solution it is hard to be enthusiastic about it. I am not a scholar of the case, or even a lawyer, but from what I can see the most problematic element of it is the equation of spending money with speech. I know it is not the most scholarly source, but wikipedia said, “The majority argued that independent expenditures are a form of speech, and limiting a corporation?s ability to spend money also limits its ability to speak.” (If anybody here knows more than I do, and wishes to challenge this characterization of the majority argument, I would welcome it.)

The media, and especially the television media, rarely amounts to much more than propaganda, no matter who is being suppored or attacked. To allow unrestricted flows of propaganda, from any source in the world, to wash over the American citizenry during critical moments is at best risky. We open ourselves up to the manipulations of groups whose interests are very much not to be equated with those of America.

I do realize that the American experiment is inherently risky, and that the government does not exist to ensure the perfect protection and safety of every person. And it could be argued that the court did get it right. I might even argue that myself. However, it is hardly a conclusion that I am enthusiastic about. It is at best a painful reality.

Envision Germany from 1933 to 1945. Ah, the good old days. Anyway, who’d you complain about?

  • Tbone

if any group has anything in common with the Nazi’s it is the liberal left that supports murdering ethnic babies through Planned Parenthood, seeks to stifle opposition speech, is anti-Semitic, marches in lockstep to its evil ideology and is personified in really rather stupid and inane semi-literate intellects such as the one you so willing display every time you post.

You doubtlessly voted for Obama because he was a cool black man and in doings, you could assuage your white guilt. Either that or you are so plain dumb, you thought he was qualified for something above pizza delivery guy.

  • EyeofMitt

Why are you so upset? You can sure play the 9′s, but you can’t take it.

pcccipio, please post here more often. I read through a few of the comments you wrote and would like to see more.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Are you also a Democrat that equates the right-wing with National Socialism?

  • EyeofMitt

banned. Well, I read some of the few posting he or she had — and agreed with some of them (pro-Romney). I mainly just liked that he called Tbone on his negativity. Is this a satisfactory answer?

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

But the guy called Tbone a Nazi because he wants to defeat the left.

And you stuck up for the guy.

And you idiot Mittbots wonder why we don’t take your boy seriously.

  • EyeofMitt

What balancing? On one hand, there’s freedom of speech.

On the other hand, there are bureaucrats and other petty tyrants who wish to stifle opposition to elected officials.

There’s only a toughie there if you consider liberty to be dangerous.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

You were a Perrybot, now you’re a Mittbot.

    Candibots are all alike though.

  • Tbone

could be found just below the tail of the dog that Mitt strapped on top of his car?

I thought I had apologized for that.

If not, and you know where I can find the dog, I’ll apologize again.

  • EyeofMitt

And in this case your snark is triple disgusting. Tell us all again Tbone, who you are voting for in the general election. Gary somebody or did you decide to sit home this year because you claim a (R) vote in CA does not matter much? Sounds more like a load of excuses to me.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

    Oops.

  • Tbone

That it why it sounds like a load of excuses.

You are the one who showed up in this thread for the sole purpose of making a fool of yourself, which you have accomplished as is your norm, and now you are asking me to respond to you inanities? Why should I? All it would do is further confuse you in your thinking that you serve some other purpose in this life other than that of a potential organ donor.

I am thankful that Mitt pays you to post here otherwise you would have stupidity as a hobby as opposed to it being your profession.

  • Tbone

as I spelled his name wrong. Actually, it was his fault for spending all his money on radio spots.

  • EyeofMitt

    Hostile much? Try decaf.

  • Tbone

I am sure you family does the same thing all the time.

Now, I have tired of you and I am sure you have lots of places you need to be apologizing for Mitt’s views whatever they may be at the present. So go outside and check the weathervane and then get busy.

briteness gave a great, nuanced explanation of his feelings on Citizens United. To reduce it to a false duality is doing everybody a disservice.

… It relates to the specific means of implementing a 60 year old law, so the answer is ‘probably not.’

  • rabun1016

This is a great ad. And, well done. Sadly, candidates other than Ron Paul have had zero cleverness in their ads. Romney is supposed to have an ad guy, Stu Stevens, as his campaign manager, but his stuff is dreadful. Santorum’s ads have been as boring as he. Newt is a guy who can write great ads, but when he is staring in them, they lose credibility.

  • ww2nd95

I’m not sure where they’re going with this, trying to portray Obama as underhanded. I have no doubt that he is, but this ad isn’t much.. seeing as how just about every leader from every situation is from world leadership to the head of fortune 500 companies, have and will always talk to counterparts in this type of manner. He really didn’t say anything damaging, beyond sounding somewhat arrogant, and we’re making a big deal out of nothing. We really need to leave these kind of junk political stories alone and talk about the more important stories of the day, like jobs and the economy.. Let the left focus on the non stories.
