A long, drawn-out death rattle for Komen for the Cure?

You no doubt remember that controversy: Komen decided to stop funding Planned Parenthood, the Left erupted in rage, Komen backed down. Victory for the liberal feminist movement! …And how does victory look now?

Well…

Reuters: “Komen said it had had problems meeting targets in about half of the five fundraising events it has staged since the blowup. One in Lafayette, Louisiana, raised less than $400,000, below its $500,000 goal, and another, to be held in Fort Worth, Texas, is also struggling.”

News4Jax: “The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization is failing to meet its fundraising targets after the charity decided to cut and then later restore funding for Planned Parenthood, a leading provider of birth control and sexual health care.*”

NWCN: “Eastern Washington’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is less than three weeks away, but so far, registration and fundraising numbers are down. Organizers think the drop in support is likely related, at least in part, to the national debate between Komen and Planned Parenthood.”

You’ll notice that none of these articles really try to address in any kind of detail why Komen is still having problems with fundraising, despite the fact that according to the established narrative of events Komen should not be still suffering. After all, according to that narrative Komen is now even more on the side of the angels, given that they purged all those horrible, horrible pro-life women from positions of authority; so everything should be fine. And yet, it’s… not. Well, to be marginally sympathetic, the media has a problem here, because there are two explanations, and neither is good for the narrative.

The first explanation is that pro-choice feminists are incredibly nasty, spite-filled, and inherently vicious individuals who think that any infraction against them can only be wiped out by blood; they are thus unlikely to be satisfied until the leadership of Komen goes out and publicly beats to death ten pro-life members of their own family. That’s ten each, of course. The second explanation is that a goodly number of pro-life women also contributed to Komen, and while they may have been able to ignore the PP [connection] before they’ll be blessed if they’ll ignore it now. And – as usual – the Left is not picking up the slack.

Yes, now that you mention it, the two scenarios are not mutually exclusive. But Komen had better hope that it’s one or the other – because if both are true then there’s only way that alienating the Left with your presumption and the Right with your cowardice can end, and that’s with the entire edifice toppling to the ground. Even with only one scenario being true it’s going to be a while before the Right forgives and forgets; possibly too long a while for this particular institution.

Mind you, liberal feminists can prove me wrong by funding Komen to 120% of previous totals… actually, yes, I did type that out with a straight face. But only because – false modesty aside – I’m very good at this sort of thing.

Moe Lane (crosspost)

*The executive director for Komen’s North Florida affiliate would like you to know, by the way, that his group never had an affiliation with PP in the first place. Good luck with that, sir.

keeping us current on the Komen incident. Your analysis of the situation is right on in my view.

“Those right-wing extremists are letting politics get in the way of ending breast cancer! Komen is going under because CONSERVATIVES HATE WOMEN!”

What’s the reason this isn’t the new narrative?

As noted in “Who Really Cares”. conservatives contribute much more money to charities than liberals. Relying on a liberal base if you are not political, is a little dangerous for that reason. When you slap conservatives in the face you can expect less enthusiasm for your cause. And those are the people most likely to contribute.

usually does the most good in the end. I was actually quite surprised at how easily and quickly Komen rolled over and played dead. I find it very frustrating that Left can get its way with such obvious tactics of intimidation and bullying (are those the same?).

competing for the same dollars are seeing a positive change (or perhaps a slower decline… the economy doth suck mightily)

I noticed a couple ads for Komen’s cancer walk and – until they splashed the Komen name – was confusing it with these guys.

Since Relay For Life has been around for a while, I find Komen doing a walk-fundraiser to be .. interesting.

They are saying that the radical conservative decision to defund Planned Parenthood caused thousands of progressives to find new charities, and that is killing Komen. They are actually taking credit for it.

Modern conservatives are well founded in the effective, proven Judeo-Christian principals of individual salvation, charity and responsibility. We know that these are the underpinning of our success and the sin of selfishness is the functional opposite. Selfishness places self before God in clear violation of the Commandments. We give not to get but in a pure desire help those in need but not to those who act against or instead of our principals. Few outside of our belief system can understand what they have never experienced. Unselfishness is un-natural to sinful man. We give to help, we withhold, not to punish, but to not help what we don?t accept as proper. We are not their (PP?s) enemy but are lovers of the greatest good. We give because we joyfully want to not out of duty or guilt or greed or for acclaim. We give much because of the joy. Sometimes we rationalize and ignore principal to do an apparent good. After all we are sinners saved by grace seeking the light. We are certainly still sinners, but will continue to work out our improvement. We were fooled in this case, we have learned of the hidden association. We will be less likely to be fooled in the future. There are better ways of supporting cancer cure and treatment research than through an organization that skims funds to allow inappropriate actions.

How many grandchildren, teachers, engineers, doctors and preachers have died so an abortionist can be employed. Roe v Wade made abortion legal not right. God is not us, and will not change because we find his precepts not to our liking.

they believe that as much as they believe the sky is blue. They will blame whatever happens to Komen on the right and never stop to question.

The Komen Reversal was actually worded a bit artfully:
“Ms. Brinker assured Mr. Lautenberg that Komen would again make Planned Parenthood eligible for grants, and he told her that was just what he and his colleagues had been seeking.” (NYT, Feb 3, 2012)

It was my thought that restoring eligibility, but not actually awarding any grants, was the dodge that they were employing while waiting for the media circus to die down. It appears, however, that they bungled communications on both ends of this fiasco.

in the minds of both the left and the right. All they have now are the moderates, and some militant left ‘true believers’. These ‘true believers’ will continue to offend. Komen will not recover, imo.

This is really the key point. During the whole kerfuffle, people kept referencing other breast cancer groups to support. It will be interesting to see whether they’ve benefited in any way from Komen’s problems – my guess is that to an extent they have, but Komen was such a juggernaut and had such great marketing it may be that no one is in a position to really fill that void. OTOH, one of the big criticisms of Komen was that it wasn’t efficient enough with its dollars, so maybe even with some amoutn of loss in total dollars you end up with a net win for breast cancer screening and research.

    Republicans hate women.

They were idiots to go one way then the other. They should have stuck to their guns once the decision was made. What they did just made them look totally unprincipled.

then asked for and received a refund of our donations with an explanation as to why. I turned around and sent that donation to another worthy charity.

  • Next93

Conservatives give much more of their own money to charity than liberals do.

Liberals are more than happy to give other people’s money to charity (jumpin Joe Biden being a prime example).

  • falconrap

do conservatives give much more of their hard earned money to charities, they also largely outnumber liberals by around 2 to 1. So those who made the idiotic decision to stay tied to PP, cost them far more support than they would have lost if they dumped PP. In fact, in the brief moments after they announced at first they were stopping support of PP, their donations went up.

Oh well. Maybe someone, somewhere, will learn a lesson from all of this. It’s not like this is the only charity for breast cancer.

  • buckeye

Liberals are known for giving far less to charity (I can site data if needed).

So if nothing else, if you’re just an apolitical charity caught between the rock and a hard place of upsetting either liberals or conservatives, the opportunity cost of upsetting conservatives is much, much higher. It’s a mathematical… this case demonstrates that reality.

  • greyeagle

Once I found out that Komen was filtering donations to Planned Parenthood, I sent my money elsewhere.

  • 6t9boss

money at all .How can you go out and ask for money to save womens lives so they can go kill their babies?
That’s the message Komen is sending…We want end breast cancer and also support killing unborn babies….that IS what abortion is.
That just doesn’t work on so many levels.

Coke is feeling the pull of the left boycott/right boycott after supporting then pulling away from a group that supports Voter ID laws. (they pulled away after the left tsaid it was boycotting.

Now comes word Hala Moddelmog, president of Arby’s and a woman (she claims to be anyway) is blocking conservative customers on twitter.

I suspect the the Komen feud is the first in what will be a long season of businesses and organizations getting slammed from both sides.

I hate that Arby’s is blocking the conservatives. I liked arby’s. Not the same ole burger joint. But, I can make my own roast beef.

…..and in the process, they have torpedoed a charity that was doing good work.

    Way to go, PP!
