FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

The Left’s expected, contemptible, and blatant hypocrisy over ALEC and stand-your-ground laws.

I’m not really all that into blogging about the Zimmerman/Martin shooting.  From what I can tell, what happened was that there was an confrontation that might have very well been avoidable; it ended with a genuinely tragic ending; and that there were actually pretty much no wider partisan implications at all, despite the attempts of the Online Left to fit a Latino Democrat onto the Procrustean bed of WASP Tea Partier.  All of which is contemptible of the Online Left, by the way.  Expected, but contemptible.

Still, the news that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has decided to stop working on criminal bill advocacy because of liberal push back on ALEC’s work on stand-your-ground laws is of interest.  Said laws, for those unaware of them, essentially confirm the right of a citizen to defend themselves if attacked; and (as Clayton Cramer and Glenn Reynolds note) such laws are very important from a feminist perspective.  Particularly when we’re talking about, say, battered women.  Amazing how quickly people on the Left stop caring about that sort of thing when it gets into the way of going after perceived Righty groups, right? Again: expected, and contemptible.

The problem that may arise for the Democrats in the future here is that while Lefty groups like Common Cause and ColorofChange are eager to go after ALEC (mostly because of ALEC’s work on fighting voter registration fraud), those groups are probably going to be a bit quieter about this:

…of the 15 states that have passed variations of the law since 2005, the year Florida’s model legislation became law, eight — a majority — had Democratic governors when the laws were enacted. None issued a veto...

[snip]

Democratic governors who signed “stand your ground” bills, or otherwise permitted them to become law, include Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana, Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, Brian Schweitzer of  Montana, John Lynch of New Hampshire, Brad Henry of Oklahoma, Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Janet Napolitano of Arizona – now the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

This is particularly interesting because former Governor Granholm is now screaming about stand-your-ground laws, despite the fact that she signed one into law in 2006.  But if we want to talk about relevant Democrats, well, Secretary Napolitano bragged about passing Arizona’s law.  And then there’s California: turns out that stand-your-ground has been the standard rule of thumb there for over a century.  But - oddly enough – a mention of any of these particular inconvenient truths is not immediately apparent on the websites of either ColorofChange or Common Cause.  Which is hardly surprising: neither organization is particularly interested in offending its Democratic masters.

Yes.  I chose that word deliberately.

There has been a lot of murders in Florida, but rarely does “stand your ground” come up. A large percentage of the cases were women abducted and murdered or have disappeared and have not been found.. The Zimmerman-Martin case was tragic, but may not have occurred as has been bleated on the liberal media. I live near that city and Sharpton and the like have been rabble rousing the populace there. Zimmerman did have a broken nose and a huge cut on the back of his head. NBC and I believe it was ABC was guilty of editing. Zimmerman was seen by paramedics on the scene. It is also reported, that Martin was not the innocent boy either. I guess this all will come out in the trial. I do not think that Zimmerman can get a fair trial here. One thing for sure, the second degree murder charge is really a stretch.

because they know they can’t get a conviction. Zimmerman was right in stand-your-ground but the lethal force he used end badly. I don’t believe in neighborhood watch groups. I think it promotes a cop wanna-be attitude in people that can cause the kind of confrontation that occurred with Zimmerman and Martin. If you want a Neighborhood watch group you should have to get a license and anyone that volunteers should have to undergo training and some sort of screening.

If Zimmerman gets a fair trail he wil be acquitted and if he doesn’t get a fair trail then the justice system will have failed and he will get convicted. What everyone seems to forget here is that the Martin family can still sue Zimmerman in civil court for wrongful death like Goldman did OJ.

Publically frog-march him and hope that this placates the mob. Somewhere Pilate’s iniquitous poltergeist looks for a basin, some soap and a towel. Not that Zimmerman is Christ-like in any other manner, but this is a total railroad job to prevent the city from going up in flames.

but they no doubt have several dozen liberals ranting on phones and using multiple email addresses to file complaints and convince executives they have size. money and a clue what they are talking about. So they fooled some execs but those voter ID laws are needed regardless of the fakeness. I live in GA, at one point the state offered free ID’s after the voter ID law and I think there were some grants to provide a free ride to get that ID.

Sure COC has other issues but most are fake outrage because liberals just discovered ALEC which has existed for several decades. Shows you how smart they really are.

They always use the word “We” so as to make people think they are big. I doubt 81,000 have ever done more than sign a stupid website list.

Though it claims to have more than 81,000 “members,” the group, which is registered with the IRS as a 501(C)(4) advocacy organization, has a small paid staff of four people and revenues of $515,219, according to its 2010 Form 990 tax return. Only $21,000 was listed for employee salary and benefits costs.

James Rucker is named by the 990 as executive director, but no compensation figures are included for him, even though he is listed as devoting 40 hours per week to the organization. Only one other officer is listed, Heidi Hess, who is named “director,” but spends only two hours per week on COC business and receives no compensation, according to the 990.

George Zimmerman still has the right to an Immunity hearing, where he can claim self-defense, based on the SYG laws. The SYG laws are still very much on the books, and in effect in Fla. It is a mini hearing before a judge only, and his attorney can bring witnesses and other evidence to the hearing. The decision is to be based upon a preponderance of the evidence. Remember there was an eyewitness to the scuffle, who signed a sworn statement that Zimmerman was on the bottom, and Martin was on top of him beating his head and face. He said that Zimmerman was the one calling for help. He left the scene to go to his upper level apt. to call 911, and while in his apt. was when the gunshot occured. The judge can decide that Zimmerman in fact did act in self-defense, and Zimmerman is exonerated. The Prosecution can appeal the judges decision. If Zimmerman wins again on appeal, he is completely free of all and any future criminal and “civil” liability against him. If that is the case, the Martin family cannot sue Zimmerman for anything.

If Martin’s attorney does not go for this bite at the apple, so to speak, Zimmerman is not being represented by a competent defense attorney. I doubt O’Mara will give up this opportunity.

by the wind’s direction. No doubt, if you bothered to look into her backround on SYG laws she had “reservations” about signing the bill in 2006, but the call volume probably made her mind up for her, plus it was an election year and she needed the points.

This was the campaign where she told everyone in Michigan they would be ‘Blown Away’ by her expected outcomes.
Well, we in this state ‘got blown’ {or hosed, depending on your outlook} and she went away just a few months ago.
    So, there is that….
