FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Preparing for Tuesday’s Day of DOOM in Wisconsin.

Some interesting happenings at today’s Wisconsin’s Brown County Dairy Breakfast*:

[Democratic gubernatorial recall candidate Tom] Barrett was greeted warmly by some of the breakfast-goers — at least one man told him Barrett he was voting for him, prompting Barrett to joke, “Give him a lot of really good food” — but others reacted differently, telling Barrett they were voting for [Republican Governor Scott] Walker and not shaking his hand when he extended it.

Asked if he got this kind of reaction when he ran against Walker in 2010, Barrett said, “No no, this is a newer occurrence.”

Ann Althouse chalks this up to combined voter fatigue/revulsion; I agree, but I do want to take mild exception to BuzzFeed’s title (“What It’s Like At America’s Most Polarized Dairy Breakfast“). “Polarized” implies a reasonably even split; and, judging from the article itself, there was no even split. People at that breakfast were portrayed as being generally tired of the recall, and by implication being generally tired of Tom Barrett, and by implication being generally tired of the Wisconsin Democratic party. I can’t imagine that the anti-Walker forces are going to be happy about any of that.

Honestly? The Democrats should have thrown in their cards when the Wisconsin primary results came in, and it turned out that Scott Walker – despite not actually having an actual primary opponent – managed to get almost as many votes as the entire Democratic slate combined. Admittedly, that would have meant that the Democrats would have to have confessed that they had thrown away tens of millions of their supporters’ money – money that could have gone to other candidates; candidates that could have won – but as it stands Wisconsin Democrats have merely thrown away that money anyway. There’s a certain moral courage involved in not throwing good money after bad…

…oh, right, I forgot. We’re talking about the Democratic party leadership, here.

Moe Lane (crosspost)

PS: I need hardly say to my Wisconsin readers: Go Vote On Tuesday. That’s because I know that my Wisconsin readers are already eagerly counting the days until Tuesday, and that they blocked out their visit to the voting booth months ago.

*This is one of those American local political traditions that generally get ignored by inside-the-Beltway types, right up to the point when there’s an actual election and it turns out that such events are often accurate harbingers of DOOM.

It is AMAZING how many people are saying that they are going to vote for Walker! There is sense of unity that I have not felt since Bush 2000. And the best part is this, come November, the VOTER ID WILL BE IN PLACE! Which means that Obama and his Chicago thugs will not be able to “disenfranchise” all the legally placed votes. Also, make no mistake about it, the unions here and the liberals in general here are non-too-happy with the DNC or Zero-in-chief. There is a very real sense of bad blood between them, I don’t know how motivated they will be to help out Zippy come November. I am beginning to believe that Wisconsin may go RED!
As for Barrett I leave this parting gift so he can sleep at night…

  • JimmyGee

and Liberals used in the same sentence. It’s a dish best served cold…

  • checkmate2012

for all of us watching & hoping Walker wins in a landslide & the great Lt. Gov. too. Ya’ll have a brave and smart Governor.

Hopefully the 14 yellowbelly Dems that fled the state rather than voting will get voted out whenever their election is! And then amend the State Constitution to make recalls only if someone breaks the laws…another issue.

Cruz & Walker supporters are sympatico!!

Off topic, but better than ice cream: Holder and Axelrod fighting with each other!

    unions are bad for america

18 GTP volunteers called all over Wisconsin this afternoon.

We were gratified, even amazed, by the warm telephone reception we received.

Overwhelmingly, the people we reached supported Scott Walker. Two told us that the lawn signs in their respective areas were 50:1 Walker:Barrett. One told us that with the exception of his collegep-age son, six members of his family were voting for Walker.

A few self-identified union members, including a school teacher, said they were voting for Walker.

Anyone in the greater New York City area who wants to join our TP can contact Gotham Tea Party through our webpage: http://www.gothamteaparty.com/

So if you want to be an activist, we’re (one place) where the action is!

  • PowerToThePeople

did not punch Barrett as he is one scummy SOB.

First thing Walker and the state Congress need to do once he wins on Tuesday is eliminate the whole recall thing except in the case of a felony conviction. I say conviction as I have no doubt that the left would use one of their lackey prosecutors to file a charge just to loophole through the law. The whole recall thing is a slap in the face to every citizen of the state considering it is nothing more than an attempt to thwart the will of the people concerning the last election and is an attempt to not allow the will of the people to be heard in the next scheduled election. This whole recall thing has been as embarrassing to the state of Wisconsin as the Dean scream.

They have not “thrown away tens of millions of their supporters? money.” They have thrown away tens of millions of union dues. Based on the dramatic decline in union membership since the Walker reforms, it appears that union rank-and-file members are not particularly supportive.

And because the unions now have to go door-to-door to collect the dues, this money will not be easily or quickly replaced.

  • zachv

My vote for Walker on Tuesday is going to be on the most satisfying votes I’ll ever take.

  • proudgop

PPP did poll over weekend and they just release it

    Walker 50
    Barrett 47

keep in mind its Politics 101 weekend polls always favor Dems

“No Mandate For Any Particular Action Seen In Upcoming Presidential Election”.

    That’s when I’ll know it’s a win.

  • riverwood

My wife and I saw Tom Barrett.. Just ignored him as there were signs all over saying “no political soliciting please”.
The event was to promote the dairy industry and not some big city mayor who probably had to stop at Fleet Farm on the way there to buy a pair of Wranglers for the first time…and yes, they looked brand new.

By the way, excellent breakfast for six bucks.. You got an omelet, sausage, caramel rolls, yogurt, deep fried mozzarella cheese sticks, deep fried cheese curds, milk, coffee, and fresh cheese. No beer though. In Wisconsin, you have to go to a church picnic for beer (and yes, I have pictures to prove it)

  • acat

This has not been cheap, and it has been a complete waste.

There really ought to be a way to make them pay for their own folly.

Preferably in ca$h .. can’t get a good exchange rate on pounds of flesh anymore.

  • checkmate2012

Weird that Barrett was there if no politicking was allowed. Hope the cows moo’d Barrett!

  • romeg

treated to an NPR piece wherein the thesis was ‘What a tragic loss of collective bargaining rights for all those poor government employees’. I expected the presenter to burst into tears at any moment.

Yes, I’ve considered the source but I keep hoping that somewhere in the halls of NPR there is a budding conservative or Libertarian just as John Stossel was at ABC.

  • commonsenseobserver

PPP, of course, had a lead of 4 points for Walker.

Statistically insignificant, but I think this race will break narrowly for Walker.

I’m hoping for a margin of 6 points or more for Walker.

  • acat

Also .. Omelet? Scrambled or sunny side up, please!

    Mew

  • checkmate2012

as you just posted about- crack me up! Over-medium please :)

  • riverwood

Bit is was really scrambled eggs with ham and lots of cheddar cheese.
We were thrilled because our serving line had three of the Packers serving food. They gave up going to Donald Driver’s annual charity softball game to promote our leading industry.
And sadly, no bacon. They served 7000 people this morning. Kind of hard to cook that much bacon.

    Go Pack..13 World Championships…next year..it’ll be 14

  • acat

    Actually .. two.

First CAC on the PPP poll you mention with a reminder that weekend polls favor the Dems.

Second, CAC thinks he knows the reason Barrett kept releasing internal polls showing he’s losing … because they show the race is going to be closer than any other polls.

If I can remind everyone? These are Dems. They stole a Senate seat for Stuart Smalley. They *WILL* try to steal Wisconsin.

    Don’t. Let. Them.

    Mew

  • riverwood

And (retiring) Herb Kohl were there too. I think the signs were to keep people from passing out campaign literature. Walker and Kohl were pretty low profile though.

  • acat

Scrambled eggs sounds more ‘farmery-y’, though.

    Glad it worked out.

    Mew

  • lineholder

32D/34R/34I split…not sure how that’s biased to the Dems

Everyone make sure they get out there and vote on Tuesday!!!

  • checkmate2012

BTW, I love omelets! Interesting morning indeed. Good luck on Tuesday!

  • commonsenseobserver

Which is why Wisconsinites must vote for the good of Wisconsin, and the good of America. If they choose correctly, they will be a beacon for the entire nation.

  • riverwood

But they’re on my phone. About a six foot skillet heated by propane with five to six people turning the eggs constantly. It looked like a wok on steroids.
Nice dairy operation too. A family farm operated for over 125 years..milking about 800 head of cows three times a day. I’m surprised PETA wasn’t there..oh I forgot..they don’t eat dairy or meat

  • mikeymike143

zollistar, i know its a coordinated national effort, theres also a tea party group in indiana(i think its monica boyer’s group but i am not 100% positive) doing the same thing. and others.

i know we sent a couple of people to wisconsin(on their own dime, our group cant afford to pay for things like that) last month to see what we could do to help. its really been the tea party that done a lot of the heavy lifting for the walker campaign in this recall. and also in the mourdock and cruz senate races.

i think we will go 3-0 with walker, mourdock and cruz being the ”tea party winning trifecta”. :)

  • checkmate2012

Go Cheeseheads! As us mice say, if you don’t have cheese in the house, you don’t have food!

  • acat

The question is in the ratio.

Are 32% of likely voters in Wisconsin Dems?
Are 34% of likely voters in Wisconsin GOPers?

Which way are those “independents” going to split, and .. are they *really* independents or Dems ? (hey, it has happened…)

It seems to me, by Walker crushing the entire Dem slate, that maybe the 34% is a tad low…. further (again, see CAC over at Ace of Spades) it *looks like* Barrett doesn’t have the momentum in the early vote that he needs, but Walker has it in spades.

I think this will be close… but I think it will go to Walker.

Don’t get lazy, Wisconsin! Get out and vote!

    Mew

  • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

and we have at least one member who made the trek to Wisconsin to spend 4-5 days helping on the front lines.

  • checkmate2012

story in WI, I think it was on Wallace’s show. They said that tons of TEA groups have been there all year and their efforts have gone mostly unknown due to the union Capitol noise invaders.

The efforts will pay off on Tuesday I’m sure, regardless of the PPP pole.

  • PowerToThePeople

so my guess may be within that range, but I am predicting a
5% to 7% win for Walker. It would not surprise me if you see it reach upwards of 10% and then you will see Obama mark this state off as a loss.

Had someone run against Walker other than Barrett, it might have been a very tight race, But Barrett is a joke even to his own side. The guy is Biden 2.

  • JimmyGee

    How sweet is that??!!

  • JimmyGee

With early and absentee voting. City of Milwaukee is in cahoots with the dem’s (that should surprise no one) by having early voting open on Saturdays and SUNDAYS. It will be interesting to see the count from Milwaukee.

  • Dave_A

Apparently more Dem-leaning folks are around to be polled on the weekend,.

  • Dave_A

    Beer, Brats, Cheese & Venison… Cold Dead Hands… Etc…

  • trutexan

Of course, it was not favorable. It neglected to include the tiny little points about property taxes going down for the first time in 14 years, not a single teacher was laid off and school districts are saving millions. You know…trivial points.

I have load of family in WI and yes, they have circled the date on their calendars. Tonight is like Christmas Eve.

  • The_Gadfly

whose name I have forgotten and can’t seem to find at the moment. It is important to vote for her too so we don’t get a split decision.

  • westcoastpatriette

    Something like that.

  • acat

    Remember Norm Coleman’s “loss” ?
Remember how they tried to steal Florida?

I’m from Chicago – watch the Illinois returns come in sometime. The whole State reports totals before Cook County reports their *final* numbers .. think that’s by chance?

    Mew

  • acat

CAC at Ace of Spades on absentee/early voting totals so far

    The money shot:

    Total absentees for 08: >633,000
    Total absentees for 10: >230,000
    Total absentees for 12: 183,000

    Mew

  • acat

Again, CAC at Ace of Spades… this time with absentee voting in a GOP area. 1/16 the size of Madison, and – as of June 2 – 1/4 the number of absentees that Madison had.

It seems to this cat, and it matches anecdotal evidence, that Walker’s supporters are the more energized.

    Mew

  • lapert

Can I ask why having early voting open on Sundays implies some sort of Dem plot? Frankly, as someone who would not go to vote on a Saturday for religious reasons I think it is imperative that early voting, if it is to exist, be available on Sundays as well.

  • JimmyGee

    Mmmmmmm……Baaaacccccoooooonnnnnn.

  • Kyle-MI

I am cautiously optimistic about Walker’s chances in the recall, but I have three big concerns.

    1. The incumbent rule which states that the majority of undecideds go to the challenger. This means the race is much closer than the polls indicate.

    2. Margin of error in polling. With Walker sitting at 50-51%, the margin of error could drop easily below 50% that he needs to overcome concern 1.

    3. Margin of fraud. I hope that the election officials in GOP areas hold back their totals until the Dem areas are turned in. I am not asking for anything illegal or unethical, actually quite the contrary. No one gets hurt with a nice, slow, careful counting of the ballots.

  • Duke

“The Democrats should have thrown in their cards when the Wisconsin primary results came in, and it turned out that Scott Walker ? despite not actually having an actual primary opponent ? managed to get almost as many votes as the entire Democratic slate combined.”

This might explain why this past week Oblamer turned Mayor Barrett into a “flyover candidate” when he did 6 fundraising trips on the day Bubba Clinton was attending a rally for him and AF-1 flew between Chicago and Minn/St. Paul twice without doing so much as dipping the wings as they overflew Milwaukee. I think Barrett’s money DID dry up after the primary, except the union cash of course.

  • Mike Ferguson

I must try this fried cheese curd at some point, that’s a new one on me.

  • Mike Ferguson

Figure Walker will take it by 5 points, which I believe was the same as 2010.

  • renny

for fear that losing in WI will could put union dues on the table here in the East/left coast and how NY and NJ politics would change if my dues (I am still in the NEA because I coach in a pub. school) and all other 10s of 1000s of teachers under contract and retired in just these two states were no longer mandatory and no longer automatically laundered immediately into the Dimwit Party!

Fraud alert flags should be waving across the street from every polling place in WI. And challengers should flag any voter they feel any qualm about.

  • zachv

You’re right Gadfly. You will have to vote both for Walker and Kleefisch on the ballot tomorrow. The GAB decided they had to run on a split ticket.

  • mikeymike143

we have concentrated our resources and manpower in a few battles. mostly the mourdock/lugar race and A LOT of help to scott walker. we are his ”boots on the ground”. plus we are backing cruz in texas.

and establishment RINO’s likes to criticize the tea party because we are not ”team players”, but we are proud to back conservatives instead of eastablishment moderates. for instance, mourdock is a FAR FAR superior candidate to lugar in every way, and we are glad that we used so much of our money and manpower to oust him.

we are also glad to be the ”boots on the ground” for scott walker. most politicians talk about cutting spending and do nothing, but scott actually did it. darn right we have his back!!!!

and after the walker race is done you can expect to see more help sent the way of cruz. perrys moderate friend dewhurst is also going down.

  • checkmate2012

I posted my comment above as don’t think they’re getting enough credit for the Walker elecdtion but saw other TEA members talking about call bank supports, etc. Walker will win IMO!

  • bk

I wonder how far over 100% the turnout at UW-Madison will be.
