What to take away from the debunking of MSNBC’s fake Romney WaWa ‘scandal.’

Background: Mitt Romney made a campaign speech today that used the WaWa convenience store franchise’s touch screen sandwich menu feature to make the point of how more cool and efficient the private sector is, when compared to the government. MSNBC doctored the clip to make it look like Romney was merely astounded that we have touch screen sandwich menus now*. Lots of people called MSNBC out on it. Hijinks are now going to ensue.

It’s all going to go entertainingly bad for MSNBC (and every enthusiast that uncritically believed the aforementioned doctored clip); and yes, I’m sure that everybody reading this is all broken up about that, too. But that’s not the point! You know what the point is? It’s that… do you know WHY people were able to debunk the story just in time for it to embarrassingly explode all over MSNBC? It’s because somebody in the audience was recording the speech.

WHAT I TELL YOU THREE TIMES IS TRUE: ALWAYS KEEP A VIDEO CAMERA WITH YOU WHEN YOU ATTEND A POLITICAL EVENT. ALWAYS KEEP A VIDEO CAMERA WITH YOU WHEN YOU ATTEND A POLITICAL EVENT. ALWAYS KEEP A VIDEO CAMERA WITH YOU WHEN YOU ATTEND A POLITICAL EVENT.

ALWAYS.

So you can someday be famous when the video goes viral. I love that guy!!!

And you know what else? It IS flippin’ amazing that you press the button and your hoagie magically appears.

with Ed Harris I think and Dean Howard. The lies, the lies. Then they had a panel on how racist the Daily Caller Report was but Michael Medvev was on and tried to provide sanity.

The one woman said, see the label racist just is empty to Reps. so unless you use the N word, it means nothing to Reps. Duh, when you overplay your shallow words they mean nothing! It was priceless and proved our points. Wish I knew how to insert idiot videos!

No policy discussion, just a racist- unbelievable.

Have another person videoing you. That way you have proof and charges can be pressed.

…the libs are telegraphing their own stupidity. I’ve heard it said the a person declares how dumb they are by how dumb they think everyone else is. Did they honestly believe that people in this day and age would buy something like this? If this is indicative of the next 5 months, it might be wise to invest in a popcorn company. Now THAT’S entertainment! :D

They did this with GHW Bush in the 92 election cycle if I remember correctly. Then it had to do with price of milk. What ever you can do to make the target look like a putz. They go back often. GW Bush just let them roll on it and look where it got him. So at the very least Romney’s surrogates need to get out and beat this down.

  • Michael M. Keohane

show “McCarthy” today, someone would record the show and it would be all over the internet and bloggers would have a field day running down all the “inacuracies.” MSNBC does not realize that times have changed and that they can and will be held accountable.

All four or five of them. Or maybe not, since they’re likely to be lefties already anyway…

  • commonsenseobserver

For Romney to arrange an interview on MSNBC, and scold them on live TV for doing this. Even better if it’s Sununu. Then roll off the list of problems America’s facing, the solutions he has (which the Democrats have obstructed), and stomp off agrily.*

    *Not really.

some of the time and you can fool some of the people all of the time but thanks to video phones you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

  • septembergurl

Back then it was barcodes. They filmed Bush in a supermarket marveling at the barcode technology that made it easier to scan items. The media made it look as if Bush had never seen a barcode, whereas he was making the same point Romney was, the superiority of the private sector in getting innovation to make people’s lives easier.

Rich Guy Out of Touch. It’s amazing how very few themes they have and how they go back to them even now, when they can be so easily refuted. They still think they control the media.

It’s not like anyone was watching MSNBC flush what was left of their integrity down the toilet. I mean the only time MSNBC had any good ratings news it was conservatives flipping over to watch Big Eddie melt down after Wisconsin voted to kick his precious unions to the curb.

in The Kool Guy’s entourage is trying to score some points.

    Reward for outing him/her?

I’m just done being “astounded” by This Administration’s increasingly outrageous mechanizations. Now, it is just how many we are witnessing.

When November comes and goes, someone really ought to write a book or three…….

It’s easier nowadays. Some things are getting better.

Me or your lying video camera?

  • PowerToThePeople

stations try this crap in this day and age. You would think they learned a bit of a lesson after the all powerful Dan Rather was punished for trying to twist information, but I guess they have not.

Way too easy to debunk bad news for anyone to think they can try to purposely twist the truth.

  • Jack_Savage

If conservatives were as bad as the left says we are, they would have no problems getting as much video as they could air. The fact that they have to make up things shows that they are involved in projection more than anything.

But you know what? This will STILL be a meme on the left, and they will repeat it and giggle and elbow each other on the back like fifth grade girls who think they have some big secret.

  • brojohn2

Who is trying to get his own message out, I enjoyed the speech portion. I have tried those machines, they are kind of neat, like the personal check out machines at Walmart, quicker and easier than standing in line behind 10 other people who all want to do the same thing you do, pay for their purchase and leave.
If we could just wake up the Federal Government to get out of the way and let the people do what needs to be done, it would be a heck of a lot faster, and much more effecient than 25 bureaucrats all giving different answers to the same question.

  • oldpete

In this we see would be “Hot Dogs” in the left press use their own words to turn themselves into a “weener”!!!!!

All together now !!!! “Wish I was an Oscar Mayer- weener”

  • barleycorn

Its not enough to point out the biased editing. The pretense that a presidential candidate must be conversant with fast food touch screens should be challenged and debunked. Does anyone quiz their surgeon on his knowledge of touchscreens?

The Romney campaign REALLY REALLY REALLY need to steer the candidate away from this casual sort of folksy anecdotal story telling. Reagan was great at it, Romney is not.

Romney needs to be a look you in the eye big picture guy who knows how the economy works and how to make it work. Mrs. Romney and various surrogates can provide the warm fuzzies.

  • earlgrey

then I saw what they did and I was really mad.

I think one of the benefits of Romney’s speech style is that it makes the results of even deceptive editing unremarkable (IMO).

following MSNBC’s being leapt upon by many, many folks who had heard the Romney quote from beginning to end, was their lame “explanation” that they hadn’t had time to play the whole thing.

They then played only the edited part and what followed it, not the preceding remarks about the doctor who received a 33-page form to complete for changing his address. The context was, of course, that Wawa, being a free market private enterprise was so much more innovative and efficient than our government. But what they played managed to avoid any such clarification.

It was totally dishonest (no!), but likely effective with all those who had not heard the true “complete quote.” Lordy, these people really are evil.

Some groups have taken to seizing people’s cameras to delete the video before it can be posted. (Police have been especially noted for doing this if you are taping them, though it would not surprise me if other groups did it, too.)

A decent percentage of you have smart phones. Look for the app Qik. (Website www.qik.com has more detail and a list of supported phones.) You get an account with them (free account, free app), and link the app in your phone to the account.

Properly configured, taking video with Qik streams the video to the website on a password-protected account where you can post it to youtube, facebook, twitter, etc later. (At least that used to be, not sure now. The iPhone version now seems to have some security issues.) In a secure version, taking the phone does no good, as the video is already online where it can be grabbed and used later. In a less secure version, I would recommend attempting to lock your phone if someone is trying to grab it from you.

There may be another app that does similar. If there is, I’d love to hear it.
