RS Interview: David Rouzer (R CAND, NC-07).

Well.  North Carolina just sort of… fell apart for the Democrats over the last few years, huh?  The Democratic Governor is fleeing her job, the legislature flipped, the districts have gotten redrawn to eliminate some truly egregious gerrymandering, and the upcoming Democratic convention in Charlotte threatens to be a public relations disaster.  It’s not very surprising, then, that NC-07 Democratic incumbent Mike McIntyre is sweating this election – Cook has him as Toss-Up, which is pretty much solely because of incumbency – and it’s even less surprising that Republican NC state Senator David Rouzer is eager for the general election.  We talked a little on the election, and what got done in the state legislature over the last couple of years:

is not the nominee. There would have been so much more energy in this race. People are still in shock over how the establishment won this one at the last minute.

Happily what had been a hard fought primary sees Sen. Rouzer and Mr. Pantano coming out the other side and joining forces to give the incumbent plenty of free time for the indefinite future.

The Republicans in charge if redistricting became the masters of gerrymanding themselves. The final map of NC7 bore no resemblence to the originally
proposed maps. (see Rucho-Lewis 1 vs Rucho-Lewis 3) They hired someone from La Raza to be part of the process and the final map was drawn for pro-amnesty State Senator David Rouzer by not only including his home county of Johnston, but keeping it whole, while counties that were pro-Pantano were split. If you listen to this interview all you hear is agriculture and Johnston County. Forget that there are several counties in the district that are coastal, have double-digit unemployment, and have no major Ag interests. Johnston County elected him, and that is who he will represent.

David Rouzer won’t vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker like McIntyre, but don’t confuse him with a conservative. He is a career politician who doesn’t believe in term limits and wants to make Congress his retirement plan while bringing home some pork for his Big Ag buddies. And by reading RS for many years and commenting occasionally, I know how much you love those Ag bills….

But only because of their own gerrymandering. If we had gotten a true coastal district, we would be enthusiastically sending Ilario Pantano to DC to fight for us. Instead , we have a choice between versions of milquetoast with Rouzer and McIntyre. Yippee!
