FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

How much longer can Claire McCaskill last in Missouri?

If you’re a Democrat, then the latest poll from Mason-Dixon should not be combined with alcohol and/or used in conjunction with heavy machinery: she’s not just losing.  John Brunner beats her 52/41; Sarah Steelman, 49/42; and Todd Akin 49/44.  And that’s registered voters.  These are the kinds of numbers that you’d expect to see from a challenger; an incumbent that far underwater needs an exit strategy, quick.  Guess the Democrats guessed wrong on how quickly McCaskill was going to fade.

Mind you, the person who should really be worried right now is Missouri governor Jay Nixon.  The Democrats have written off the state in the Presidential election; Claire McCaskill is starting to swirl the drain; and the DCCC seems to have decided not to really push at the three first-term Republican incumbents this cycle.  Nixon’s looking very, very alone right now.  Such a shame…

PS: Primary’s August 7th.  McCaskill is, by the way, running unopposed in the primary.  …Oops?

COMMENTS

    …intransigence.

The Democrats just refuse to learn. After 2010 one would think that the Dems would distance themselves from Obama and his policies, but they just can’t bring themselves to believe that We the people really really don’t like their policies.

I like to call my Dem senator, Mark Pryor, once every couple of weeks to remind him, through his staff, that we kicked Blanche Lincoln to the curb after repeated warnings to stop voting like a CA leftist and we’re just chomping at the bit for 2014 to get rid of him. You’d think he would stop voting with the Leftists in order to keep his seat, but no, he still votes with Obama and Reid. He’s toast on 2014 just like Claire is toast in a few short months.

  • Neil1030

… The Dems might try to dump her and run someone stronger, like they did in NJ in 2002??

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Unless Dick Gephardt, the servant of labor unions everywhere, were to come out of the rest home, but he’d get stomped to. Which means Clair bear will get the tail kicking; she so thusly deserves for being an ObamaSyco.

  • poorwilber

The Democrats will have to find a replacement that will run against Obamacare. In Missou, in that case, you might as well vote for a Republican.

  • freemanja1991

just like Bob Kerry in NE she is the only person who can raise the money not to just a spot on the ballot. but actually run campaign.

  • emptybucket

Missouri has come to its senses. Hasn’t Missouri been Red for many years? Was it Claire who supported Obama that some pundits felt helped put Missouri in the Blue column in 2008? This diary added a cheerful note to my day. I follow Missouri politics as have relatives there….conservative relatives.

  • Kyle-MI

It was one of the few bright spots from 2008.

  • califgal

looking good, but can someone analyze Ohio for me?

I know that the state unemployment figures there are not as bad as they are for the rest of the country, but they’re still bad, and that Obama is leading there is very troublesome.

From all I’ve read, the Romney team believes he needs Ohio to have a chance of winning the Presidency. I can’t see that Ohioans or anyone else’s votes will be won over by a candidate at the Olympics although months ago, that trip might have seemed important and to have cancelled it at the last minute might have sent the wrong message. The Israel trip I understand given many Jews, dems at heart, hate Obama’s attitude and treatment of Isreal.

I’m left feeling that Romney plans on naming Portman as his VP choice, and left thinking he believes that will win him the state. My gut says, “Beware of such thinking” but I admit I know nothing of the internals of Ohio and have no real sense of people there.

Can anyone help me understand the Romney strategy to win Ohio?

  • votemout2012

Akin is a fiscal and social conservative who will stand on principle and not cave to republican establishment. He proved this with his NO vote on TARP. Pres Bush had contacted him personally for support of TARP but Todd stood his ground. I sense all the negative ads by the Brunner campaign has taken its toll. 1/2 truths and distortions how elections are one. Todd has shown his integrity by running a positive campaign running on his proven record of leadership.

  • Bill S

Rural MO is heavily conservative/GOP. But it is almost offset by the heavily Democrat urban areas of STL and KC. A look at the results map from the 2004 and 2008 elections tells the story.

    http://www.mapsofworld.com/usa/presidential-election/results/missouri-2004-2008.html

You can’t be more obvious than that.

  • Bill S

But Brunner’s TV ads are killing Akin’s chances. Money talks.

  • votemout2012

Sad because I fear Brunner is the Akin donator who refused to support him after the TARP vote. Easy to run with no record. Just say what the people want to hear. Of coarse conservative pundits could weigh in for Todd because he does have the conservative credentials but they remain silent. MO will end up with another Roy Blunt type candidate who will say what it takes to get elected then receive a 62% rating from Heritage Action. You are right only way to win is go negative and ample purse to do it.

  • mikwcas

ON THE “LIKE” BUTTON AND SMILE :)

  • emptybucket

memory is going fast…guess the disappointment of McCain somewhat blanked out anything good from 2008. Thanks for straightening me out. In the future I’ll double check my “memory” before posting.

So hope it is true that Missouri will not be so close in an election that it takes two weeks to figure out who won. Don’t think Claire will have to worry about those kind of statistics.

  • Xasteius

  • renl57

In MO, any Dem running for Senate would have to repudiate the standard-bearer of his party–Obama–and his policies, in order to have a chance with voters who are likely to vote for Romney in a state landslide.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

He’s been endorsed by Senator Ron Johnson (R), endorsed by Senator Jim Demint in 2010. Brunner will most likely follow in Johnson’s lead which would mean he would get around an 80-90% Heritage Foundation rating.

Sarah Steelman has an endorsement from Senator Mike Lee (R), also endorsed by Senator Jim Demint. She would also have a good conservative rating. Mike Lee has a

Todd Akin has served well in the U.S. House. He has a good conservative record.

ALL would be good replacements over Claire McCaskill. The key is that the GOP MUST unite after the primary. There must be no more bickering. After it’s over…it’s over! UNITE TO DEFEAT AIR CLAIRE!

  • gflyer3364qt

Was also glad to see that Heller is up to 51 in Nevada. This was a Rasmussen poll, one of the few I trust. He’s been leading for some time, but it was close and he hadn’t broken 50. Now it looks like Berkley is self destructing since the fraud issue. Now it’s Heller leading 51-42. The Senate race in Nevada is much more important that the presidential race there.

Not sure you are correct about DeMint endorsement. Please add link if you can with endorsement. Brunner has ties to chamber I think where endorsements come from. Todd has proven conservative record no guessing involved. If Brunner win not sure I can support some one with NO integrity.

  • http://barbershopvalues.com daconia

As a MO resident, I can only say “good riddance.” She voted against her own constituents and against the interests of her own state (the very purpose of a Senator).
A humorous aside: My recent (not very nice) comments to Claire were answered by a robo e-mail and addition of my name to her fund-raising list. I guess she mistook me for Rodney Dangerfield!
Does anyone have any opinions on Steelman?

  • onemovoter

That was during the time before Obamacare was to be voted on but we knew it was coming down the pike. She was holding townhalls throughout the state and it was the same everywhere. Very few came in support of Obamacare.

McCaskill did say that if we didn’t like what she was doing, we’d have the opportunity to vote her out in the next election for her seat.

WE INTEND TO DO SO!!!! We had a vote after Obamacare was passed, on whether we wanted to follow the law or not, and 73% voted NO, which is incredible considering we are basically a 50/50 state.

As far as the Governor spot, no one has really been advertising for that seat on the GOP side. I have seen Nixon ads that were all positive so far. So I don’t think he’s feeling any heat yet from the GOP side. The way it looks, Nixon will get back in, if the GOP doesn’t step it up a whole new level.

  • commonsenseobserver

Both Akin and Steelman would be excellent candidates to replace McCaskill. Let’s just hope the primary doesn’t have a divisive effect, like in the Wisconsin Senate seat, where Baldwin now leads Thompson by 7 points and Hovde by 3.

  • votemout2012

If you listened to her debate you know she will not be able to debate McCaskill. She has a terrible time articulating her message. Todd superior knowledge on all issues stands out. Brunner okay as long as he sticks to his talking points.

  • votemout2012

    Going with Randall.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

I said he was endorsed by Ron Johnson, who was endorsed in 2010 by Jim Demint. Essentially, Brunner has been endorsed by a strong ally of Jim Demint.

  • commonsenseobserver

    Just saying :P

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Freedomworks for America has endorsed John Brunner: http://www.freedomworksforamerica.org/candidate/john-brunner

Remember, they are the organization who has helped Ted Cruz and Richard Mourdock a lot! :)

Ron Johnson’s endorsement (also Tom Coburn has endorsed John Brunner):
    http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2012/03/coburn-johnson.php

Listen to the radio interview that John Brunner and Ron Johnson had together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWruP7yT4Cw

Remember: Ron Johnson has a 100% from the Club for Growth and 95% from the Heritage Foundation (only lower than Jim Demint and Mike Lee)

Tom Coburn has a 100% from the Club for Growth and 90% from the Heritage Foundation.

I have no doubt that if John Brunner is nominated, he is worthy of our support. He will be a conservative voice in the senate. And NO Republican should think about supporting Claire McCaskill or not voting.

(Note: I’m simply defending Brunner. I have nothing against Akin or Steelman. They would both be good senators and should they win the nomination, I will support them fully.)

  • gflyer3364qt

Obama is a few points ahead among DECIDED voters, but he can’t seem to get above 47. Romney is at about 44-45. Ohio went for Bush in 2004. Bush got 51% of the vote, Kerry got about 49, Ohio went for Obama in 2008. Obama got 51.5%, McCain got 47%, third parties got the rest. In 2010, Ohio elected Republican governor, Senator, and House delegation is 13 Republicans, 5 communists. Latest Rasmussen poll July 18: Obama 47, Romney 45. Romney is closing in. 47+45=92, which leaves 8% undecided. 75-80% of the undecided goes against the incumbent. (Google the incumbent rule if you’re not familiar.) Ohio also rejected Obamacare back in Novemeber. Romney will win Ohio with 51-53% of the vote.

  • commonsenseobserver

But I’m just worried about his lack of electoral experience. We can’t bet on a Ron Johnson every time.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

He has the endorsements of Freedomworks for America (who has endorsed Ted Cruz and Richard Mourdock), Senator Ron Johnson (who has a 95% from the Heritage Foundation and a 100% from the Club for Growth and was endorsed in 2010 by Jim Demint), and Senator Tom Coburn (who has a 90% from the Heritage Foundation and a 100% from the Club for Growth).

I don’t understand why so many people here refuse to consider supporting him. He’s run some negative ads against Todd Akin, but that doesn’t mean we should refuse to support him if he wins the nomination. He would be a great conservative.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

would you support him over Claire McCaskill?

  • commonsenseobserver

Winning the Senate is a key step to restore America, and defeating McCaskill is essential for that, and I’m confident John Brunner would be a much better Senator who would not fight President Romney and Congressional Republicans at every turn.

  • votemout2012

I have not given one dime to these super pacs. I have sent numerous inquiries to freedom work about their endorsement. What is their criteria to lend their support? Funny no response. Brunner is well connected. Akin just doing his job watching out for MO voters. Wonder if these endorsements more to do with candidates willing to go along with votes instead of standing on principles. I can tell you after watch Brunner attack Akin with distorted Ads and half truths he will NOT get my vote. He has spent 5 million of his own dollars to buy this race with sleazy attacks on Akin. He will NEVER get my vote.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

I get mad at Republicans, Libertarians, Conservatives, Constitution activists who refuse to support the GOP nominee (there are exceptions—Scozzafava vs. Hoffman).

A vote for Claire McCaskill is a vote for Obama. You have shown a lot of common sense.

  • votemout2012

Todd has a record. Brunner can talk the talk. Plus 5 million of his own money to trash the other 2 conservatives in the race. Sorry he is a sleazy who cannot win the race on his own merits. He has been a huge donor to Akin in past. Now he runs and suddenly Akin is a out of control spending liberal. Get REAL! Some one is a phony and it is not Akin

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

if Brunner wins the nomination, and you don’t vote for him….you are essentially supporting Harry Reid for another term as majority leader. Because if Claire McCaskill wins, winning the senate will be much harder.

I don’t know how you feel about Jim Demint, but he only has four more years in the Senate (he’s not running fore re-election). If the senate is taken by the GOP, he will likely be the chairman of the Commerce committee. But if we don’t take the senate, then he will be stuck as ranking member with Democrat Rockefeller as chairman. I want Jim Demint as chairman!

Please reconsider. Support who you want during the primary (who I presume is Akin), but we must support the nominee.

  • votemout2012

You mean what we need is another go along to get along republican? No thanks! That is why our country going down the toilet!

  • gekster

    That’ll show them stupid rino’s.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

I have nothing against Akin. I will support him fully should he win the GOP nomination. In fact, I don’t have a specific preference in this race.

But I think it is wrong to refuse to support someone if the person becomes the GOP nominee. 6 more years of McCaskill is something we can’t afford!

  • votemout2012

Sorry supporting the wrong person will do nothing to help our country fix any thing. Conservatives need to unite behind candidates who are committed to fix this mess. I want Proof of what they will do. Wasn’t it just recently when Erick pointed out all those new tea party conservative from 2010 and their dismal voting records.

  • votemout2012

What does that have to do with Brunner? We have no Proof how Brunner will vote. What is Brunner’s relationship to Johnson? I like DeMint but did he attend any of MO debates with these candidates? It was eye opener!

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

instead of chairman? Do you want Rockefeller as chairman instead of Demint?

You want 6 more years of McCaskill? You seriously think that sending Air Claire for another 6 years is a good idea. That’s your choice. America will thank you for sending Air Claire back to the Senate.

I’m no fan of RINOs. I despise RINOs like Murkowski (who wrongfully ran a write-in campaign), Bennett (defeated by Lee in 2010) Alexander, Lugar (defeated by Mourdock), and others. But the right place to get rid of RINOs is in the primary. In the general, we must support our GOP nominee to get people like Jim Demint in leadership positions.

I won’t try to convince you anymore. I hope that Missouri Republicans pick their candidate and then get behind the nominee. Unity will defeat Air Claire and hopefully Harry Reid. United we stand, divided we fall. Evil can only win if we are divided. The choice is yours.

  • gekster

then get off your butte and go work for them.
Whinning on a blog won’t get it done.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

because you don’t believe he is conservative…go to the polls with THREE WORDS IN MIND…

    CHAIRMAN JIM DEMINT! :)

  • votemout2012

Let’s continue to support candidates who will do as they are told by republican leadership as our country circles the drain. It may stem the flow for awhile anyway .

  • APA Guy

Chew on that for a moment…especially when conservative budgets and the repeal of Obamacare run from the House to the senate, only to find such legislation DOA with Dems in power.

There is too much at stake to whine in the name of purity. We dance with the GOP once they are our candidates because the alternative is exponentially worse for our country…end of story.

  • commonsenseobserver

Which underscores the importance of voting Conservative in the primaries and voting Republican in the general.

  • commonsenseobserver

    Sen. McCaskill’s: 13%

    Sen McConnell’s: 75%
    Rep. Cantor’s: 55%

    Sen. Reid’s: 5%
    Rep. Pelosi’s: 16%

    The “centrists”:
    Sen. Collins: 34%
    Sen. Kirk: 64%
    Sen Brown: 42%

    Sen. Nelson: 22%
    Sen. Lieberman: 8%

    Enough said.

  • commonsenseobserver

Lower score than an Illinois Senator…

In any case, Republicans are far superior to Democrats.

  • votemout2012

I have been off my “butt” making calls, attending events, passing out flyers, making donations. But we ALL know nothing tops 5 million in negative ads. Whining on a blog might get some one else off their butt and look at these candidates and make a different choice.

  • gekster

All I’ve seen is you whinning and saying you arn’t voting for the Republican candidate if it isn’t the one you want.

  • APA Guy

You need to ask yourself what your ultimate aim is here, votemout2012. If you intend to take purity to the grave with you, you and those with your stubborn streak (Ronulans, I’m looking in your direction…) may well take the country to that same plot.

Conservative in the primary, GOP in the general…that’s our best hope…and the rule of this site, I should add.

  • votemout2012

I suppose having a Brunner who admits he likes some parts of O-care will be a shoe in for total repeal. (Same thing Blunt has said as well) Chew on that for a while genius.

  • APA Guy

I thought I was the only one who noticed this poster’s predilection toward taking his/her ball home when the game isn’t played his/her way.

Why people would risk the future of the country on purity at a time like this is beyond me.

  • gekster

He’s not the one I wanted, but he is the one we’ve got.

  • commonsenseobserver

It’s how the bill was designed to attract the support of special interests.

That hardly means we support it, because it’s all mixed up with nonsense that outweighs the likeable parts, and the two are impossible to separate.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

as a Texan if it doesn’t go our way on July 31st, you’ll have to go to the polls in November and pull the lever for Dewhurst (now that is a real profile in courage for the cause).

  • votemout2012

Full repeal on O-care will only occur if we have committed Conservatives. Too bad we don’t have ppl out their sending out their support for ppl who will turn this country around.

  • APA Guy

Holy smokes…my tongue is on fire.

  • votemout2012

Conservatives never seem to get what they want. But like sheep we should all get in line and pull the lever for the “republican” who can win…Sad

  • APA Guy

I am always amused when purity elements go down this jaded path. Is it your contention that sitting in your living room on Election Day, voting for some no-chance-in-hell-to-win 3rd party candidate, or voting for a Democrat will somehow be better for this country than voting for the GOP candidate?

At least with GOP candidates we have a chance to right the ship. With Democrats, we KNOW what we will get.

It’s not “sad”…it’s a reality based on the consequences of making a foolish choice i.e. taking your ball and going home. We are in the fight of our lives here. Now is not the time to stomp in disgust because we don’t get who or what we want all the time.

  • PowerToThePeople

but his 62 score is 62% voting our way compared to 0% you will get with a dem.

Can not win every election. If the good guy does not get in the first time, you come back and try again the next time and the next time again if needed. But the fight for purity is done in the primaries, the general is reserved for keeping out as many democrats as possible.

To not vote is the same as voting for a democrat. It is the childish way to act and you have a choice, be an adult and fight the democrat invasion or be a child and go home if your preferred candidate does not win.

This is why we have elections, to get the best into power. If we fail, we keep trying each and every primary. If we succeed and then the person turns out to be crap, we do it all over again. But because we live in an imperfect world, we will never achieve perfection. But less the perfect is much better than the alternative, the democrats. They have complete solidarity in the general when it comes to beating us, we must do the same. It must always be conservative in the primary, republican in the general. If you do not accept that, then you are an ignorant person not worthy of our effort to convince you of the necessity to defeat democrats.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Roy Blunt noted RINO voted against it; Clair Bear McCaskill noted ObamaSyco voted for it. In fact, noted liberal Republicans Brown, Collins and Snowe all voted with Roy Blunt and Jim DeMint on OCare. There is no Republican who votes worse than Clair Bear.

Please take your inspiration from Erick Erickson; Erick doesn’t believe the GOP should have nominated Mitt Romney except his favorites didn’t run and the voters chose Romney. Erick has not sit around whining and crying about what might have been (Billy Kristol, Chucky Krauthammer – I’m looking at you) – he’s done what it takes to win the White House because the idiot currently occupying it – is a disaster.

The money thing to me is where you lose it – the ability to raise money is a good thing in politics. I can guarantee you, Claire Bear won’t have any compunction about punching Akin’s lights out with piles of campaign cash. It wounds me when I see conservatives acting like this guy about money…(the answer is go out and raise a pile).

I love Akin and I hope he wins but I’ll support Brunner or Steelman if he doesn’t and to be consistent I’ll support Dewhurst if he beats Cruz, though my skin will crawl.

  • elizaliza

Yah, that unemployment can EASILY be blamed on both Bush and Boehner since Boehner blocks about every bill that comes from the White House. Like it or not, we can’t rail against an American Jobs ACT, while cheering on the Keystone thing.
Any blame towards pelosi will be countered by laying blame on Boehner, who has a greater majority than she ever had.

Romney supports tax credits/incentives for companies that go overseas, that surely doesn’t sit well with Independents.

  • commonsenseobserver

After a trillion that didn’t work.

Spending more than $250K to create each phantom job.

And Romney supports comprehensive, long-term tax simplification and reform to stop Washington from picking winners and losers.

    Get over it.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

We must fight for conservatives in the primary, but when the general election arrives, we must support the GOP nominee.

(I hope the purists here realize that after the primary, if they come here and whine about the GOP nominee or suggest voting for a third party candidate, they could be banned from RedState. Just reminding them of that fact.)

Conservative in the Primary….GOP in the General Election.

Remember: Even the worst GOPers still do better than the best Democrats.
Look at this Club for Growth scorecard: http://www.clubforgrowth.org/assets/files/CongressionalScorecard/2011_SenateScorecard.pdf

I pledge to support Todd Akin, Sarah Steelman, or John Brunner…whoever wins the primary.

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

I watched C-SPAN a few days ago and Harry Reid said that he wants to change the rules so that he can pass any legislation by simple majority.

The Democrats are radically changing this nation, and we need a majority to stop them..

(Don’t forget: Voting for your GOP nominee (no matter how RINOish he/she may be) leads to CHAIRMAN JIM DEMINT :) !

  • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Did I just see the wrong headlines about a guy named Richard Mourdock defeating Dick Lugar? Maybe I’m mistaken.

Didn’t I see that conservatives like Thomas Massie and Tom Cotton defeated RINOs in KY and Arkansas?

Didn’t I see Brad Wenstrup and Jim Bridenstine defeat RINOs in Ohio and Oklahoma?

Stop undermining our victories. We work hard during the primaries, but sometimes things don’t go our way.

I encourage you to continue fighting for your candidate in the primary. I applaud your passion for his ideas, but do not let your passion allow you to support 6 more years of Air Claire.

  • APA Guy

Dems controlled congress for the last two years of Bush’s presidency…and surprise surprise, our economic meltdown ensued shortly thereafter.

Then, Obama took office…and subsequently added nearly 6 TRILLION in debt while destroying the value of our dollar and failing to achieve a single one of his economic campaign promises…including keeping U3 under 8%, not increasing taxes on those making less than $250,000, and cutting the deficit in half.

Obama and his Dem idiot tribe in congress have destroyed this country’s economy. You might want to come up with some non-Daily Kos talking points in the future if you wish to post here.

  • votemout2012

Millionaire Brunner is funding his negative attack campaign. Akin has out raised both of his competitors in this race. Unfortunately Todd doesn’t have 5 million in his back pocket to flood the internet, TV with his POSITIVE message. Brunner using his own personal funds!

  • votemout2012

Todd has an 82% quite a contrast.

  • PowerToThePeople

and I think you know that. You are either just a hardheaded fool or an ignorant person.

It is always better to get the best conservative the win in the primary, but if that does not happen, you have to vote for the better candidate in the primary which is always the republican. Even Olympia Snowe, a lousy politician, is much better than the democrat alternative.

It is very simple, work as hard as you can to get the right person in during the primary, if you fail to do that, start getting ready to fight again in the next primary, but in the meantime you have to keep the dem out even if that means voting for the less than stellar republican.

Not that hard to understand. If you are too childish or too stupid to understand that, than you are not worthy of our time and conversation.

  • votemout2012

Lugar was targeted by redstate and other conservative blogs. Correct.

  • PowerToThePeople

if you want to be the pious petulant purist, you should be just as ignorant about Todd considering an 82% is not that impressive, not that much higher than a 62%, and is much lower than what a true conservative should be. Where is you faux outrage when it comes to his 18% record of non conservatism? Why are you not refusing to vote for him and demanding a 100%er prior to your blessing them with your vote.

Sit back and you will realize the ignorance you are spewing.
