FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

A tale of two campaigns: contrasting Romney-Ryan’s access with Obama-Biden’s.

So, to review the bidding: when Romney picked Ryan, Establishment Democrats (and their liberal lackeys) cackled in response that the GOP would now have to hide from the entire state of Florida, thanks to Mediscare. No way that they were going to go all-in, there.

Yeah, about that?

Not so much. Note the signs: generally speaking, ducking an issue – or state – does not mean ‘showing up in the symbolic epicenter of a supposed controversy. With your mom. And with a big honking sign stating your position being used for your camera backstop.’ In fact, that’s kind of the opposite of ducking. If anybody in that crowd didn’t know by the end of the speech that Paul Ryan wants to talk about Medicare, it’s because they were deaf, blind, and lacking someone to sign the speech into their hands.

Meanwhile, the President is… limiting the size of his rallies? Wait, what?

“We have plenty of time for big rallies,” a campaign spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said between the rallies on Thursday. “Our focus right now is on exciting our supporters and winning over undecided voters and the smaller and medium-size events are the best venue to accomplish that because the president can closely engage with the crowd.”

Via JMF. What makes this NYT article particularly entertaining is the date: August 9th. On August 11th Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan for the VP slot, and since then Romney-Ryan’s crowds (and donations*) have soared. Annnnnnd that’s why Romney kept his pick a secret for as long as he needed to (which is to say, until after the Friday papers came out)…

Moe Lane (crosspost)

*Somebody remind me in December to do a post on what the differences were between the Romney & McCain campaigns at this stage, particularly our reaction to their respective VP picks. I’d do one now, except that I think that I’d rather wait until writing that post won’t give the opposition party potentially valuable campaign data.

This post brings up a good observation about how the campaign strategies are differing. With regard to the smaller crowds for Obama, that might not be by his choice and I wrote a blog post on this a few days ago about this same topic but compared the rhetoric coming from the Leftists with that of Romney and Ryan. The unhinged, desperate nature of the Leftists is becoming obvious to more people and the glory days of people showing support for hope and change has dwindled and the small crowds validate this. Team Obama are digging their own political graves with these stupid memes regarding tax returns, throwing grannies off cliffs, etc. #popcorn!

Breitbart. It was brilliant. He explained clearly why action needs to be taken to save Medicare, otherwise it will go bust. Ryan explained how Medicare was there for his mom and grandmother, and he wanted it to be around for future generations.

Good luck DNC on trying to spin that one. Looks like Romney/Ryan just took the fight to you and you lost, big time.

Hiding from Florida is not an option. Without those electoral votes, the path is not pretty. Fortunately, the Romney campaign saw this right away, and is not going to let the Dems scare seniors down there where the election will be won or lost.

Ryan is going to have to keep hammering away in Florida. He’s likable, and if he can swat away Obama ridiculing the revisions in his budgets, I think he can save Florida from going blue again.

  • ctredstater

he really owns his material. and he is sharpening how he makes his points. his timing – the applause lines – the strength of his logic – the “offense v. defense” – it truly is inspiring to see.

    Wow that was great!!

Many of us in the Indiana TEA Party groups are waiting to see what Romney does to try to reach out Ron Paul groups that are the TEA Party. With Johnson pulling large (for a third party) % in polls I begin to winder if Romney asks Ron Paul to speak at the convention. To win, Romney needs Ron Paul not only state once to vote for Romney but campaign for Romney. If I were Romney, a late September surprise (because of early voting) of nominating Ron Paul as Treasury Sec, would pretty much guarantee Romney the victory.
Until then, I am still waiting for Romney/Ryan to state when the conservatives can expect spending to equal revenue without Social Security spending… 20 years is not acceptable. Try 4-6 years.

I thought the Obama campaign line about limiting tickets was a good correlation to Spinal Tap – and I went to look up the line and saw that Mark Steyn already thought of that – http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/314400/re-we-meant-do-mark-steyn

Mitt Romney is not know as the most charismatic campaigner out there. But he certainly had the sense to know an opportunity when he sees it. What is revealing about Obama is he does not even get the underlying opportunity (beyond the simple photo opp).

This is a great example of what is fundamentally wrong with Barack Obama (beyond his campaign).

Joe Biden is their eighteen inch Stonehenge.

who have caught the immense grass roots wave of our lifetime and are riding it all the way to the election. Barack Obama is simply splashing around in a kiddie pool, trying not to get too wet.

While there may be some Ron Paul groups operating under the Tea Party banner, not all Tea Partiers are Ron Paul acolytes. Many Tea Partiers are rather annoyed at Ron Paul followers claiming the banner, y’know.

I haven’t seen where Johnson is polling notably well .. he’s a better candidate that Ron Paul, but – especially with Ryan on the GOP ticket – Johnson’s presence in the race is hard to explain. I also note that you assert Johnson’s poll numbers as “good” without a link.

Treasury secretary is a nothingburger job. Clearly, if someone as willfully stupid as Turbo Tax Timmie can do it, most village idiots would be fine. I would not put Ron Paul there, though .. I’d make him Sec. Education…

Finally, you mis-state or mis-understand the Ryan Roadmap rather badly…. but I’ve offered you enough free pointers already.

I wish Johnson would go away. If Romney loses because of this, Johnson is selfish in staying in the race just to get his message out – that he doesn’t like either candidate. Neither do I, HOWEVER, the lesser of two evils is better than Johnson handing the election to Obummer.

Joe Biden and wee man Robert Reich dancing around a miniature stonehenge.

The Republic would be better served by a GOP Congress and Dem (especially Obama) White House because it would force a significant clarification of the limits of the executive branch.

I don’t particularly want to live through that experiment, but the theory appears solid, which is why I view winning the Senate as the priority.

I am not worried about Johnson. The Libertarian Party do best on fiscal ussues, and in the west and southwest. Ryan trumps Johnson in that the Ryan Roadmap is plainly having an impact while Johnson appears a sore GOP primary loser; further, Libertarian GOTV generally sucks, while Romney is calling in LDS resources on top of GOP ones to do GOTV.

Johnson has ended his career for nothing.

I just traveled the entire state from the Keys to Pensacola and finally after three days and 2,000 miles I found one lib in South Florida and he was afraid to talk issues.Looks good down here from my standpoint.

  • JSobieski

I say “I told you so”. The guy is a superb communicator and putting him on the ticket was the only to put him on TV each and every day.

There is more to optimistic with this ticket than with any ticket since 1984.

  • reclaimit

But I am willing to bet you weren’t visiting the places where Obama voters are found. Dog tracks, prisons, strip clubs, and universities, for instance. Most polls have the Chosen one ahead down there. And the general concensus is that the governor is going to have a tough time winning reelection. His favor ability is lower than Romneys. Still, with Ryan, I think we can pull it out. We have to.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

Ron Paul groups are not the Tea Party. Tea Party groups aren’t the Tea Party either, but that’s another discussion.

Ron Paul supporters were never going to vote for Romney anyway. Gary Johnson is a net positive for Romney, because those that were going to vote at all were probably going to vote for Obama like they did in 2008.

There is no way a bill will pass congress that makes Social Security solvent in 4 years. Ryan’s plan isn’t ideal, but it has a real possibility of being passed and gets us going back in the right direction.

I just hope she doesnt get too attached to Rick Scott. She’s a future star, and anything she can do to keep deadbeat Democrats from showing up at the polls with electric bill envelopes or food stamp vouchers, thinking that’s “valid enough” will be a great help going forward. Florida is probably the dirtiest fraud state and she can win that battle.

  • septembergurl

Ferguson is somewhat anti-Obama so not a surprise. But really a broadside at Obama’s failures.

Like many of us, Ferguson was lukewarm about Mitt, but that has changed since the selection of Ryan. Great in itself, it also says a lot about Mitt, that he intends to have a consequential Presidency. If Ryan is any indication, Mitt will bring together a great team to lead our country out of the morass in which Obama has put us.
