Draft Suggestion: Ken Cuccinelli for VA-SEN

From the diaries by Erick

In 2012, the people of Virginia will have the opportunity to replace their sitting US Senator, Jim Webb. Webb is a Democrat who had served in the Reagan Administration as his Secretary of the Navy. He wasn’t in that role for less than a year. Because he refused to reduce the size of the Navy, so he resigned. In 1979, Webb had written an editorial about how women had no place in combat situations. This, unsurprisingly, offended some people. In 2012, the people of Virginia need someone to stare down Webb and recapture this US Senate seat. I think Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli could be that candidate.

Cuccinelli is a former State Senator, first elected in a special election in 2002. He was staunchly pro-life, supporting a number of pro-life related regulations. He pushed stricter immigration laws including allowing businesses to sue competitors using undocumented workers and pushed to change state law to establish that the inability to speak English in the workplace is cause for disqualification for unemployment benefits. He pushed for eminent domain reform and fought tax increases / former Governor Warner’s bloated budget. He’s an all around conservative that would make the grassroots very happy in Virginia.

Then…let’s add on his tenure as Attorney General. First, he joined in an amicus brief with a number of other states to help fight the federal government’s suit against Arizona. Second, he issued a legal opinion stating that police enforcement officials to investigate the immigration status of those they arrest. Third, he plans to file a suit against the federal government’s March 2010 new fuel efficiency standards. The fourth is the reason I like to call him my hero – his suit challenging Obamacare.

In the case of Commonwealth of Virginia, Ex Rel. Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, II v. Sebelius, Cuccinelli sued the federal government over the individual mandate part of Obamacare. You can read more details about the case here. The bottom line: Cuccinelli won and the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia ruled that the individual mandate is unconstitutional. While the courts did not block the implementation of the law while it works through the court system – this was a big step towards the dismantling of Obamacare. Cuccinelli helped lead the charge – and won the first skirmish of the overall battle against Obamacare. That has made him a grassroots conservative hero, that will provide him with some nationwide momentum going into 2012.

Webb voted for Obamacare – and Cuccinelli is the man who struck the first blow against the bill. Cuccinelli can challenge Webb on the constitutionality of the legislation and on the constitutionality of much of the federal legislation that comes through. He can challenge Webb on his misogynistic remarks from the past. He can challenge him with a perfectly conservative record on fiscal issues.

If you want to learn more, check out his official website here. I think he’d make a solid candidate – and hope we can convince him to run.

Running for office is tough work and requires total dedication and a burning desire to win. “Drafting” anyone is just wrong. If you have to convince someone to run you have already lost.

Fred Thompson (although I love his ideas) was disastrous. The notion that “golly gee, I’ll run if the American people want me to” is totally non-committal garbage and is a losing proposition. I hope we never make that mistake in “convincing” someone to run when they may not have the total desire within themselves in the first place.

Show me a qualified person with much ambition and desire within themselves, and I’ll show you a winner.

and Fred Thompson was my candidate until he dropped out. It was a disaster. I think it’s funny that you look around google and you see Draft Chris Christie, Draft Paul Ryan, or the best one a while ago, Draft Scott Brown, hahaha.

Cuccinelli would make a great Senator or Governor for Virginia. If he chose to run for the Senate seat, he would certainly represent it better for the conservative cause than Webb ever has.

However, Webb should not be knocked down for his comments regarding women in combat. Webb was a combat-decorated Marine in Vietnam, and he was right. Whether it was/is Vietnam or Afghanistan, women should not be in combat.

There are plenty of other issues to run against Webb on, and he can be defeated on those issues.

Seems to me that I have seen plenty of women in the Wounded Warriors project that have sacrificed as much as their male counter parts. I’m more than sure that many here will have a big problem with your statement. You can support Webb anyway you choose, but, his sexism is more than a little objectionable. I also had a problem with his novel where he writes about a father having sex with his son.

He can do far more for the country where he is as VA AG then he would as 1 out of 100 U.S. Senators.

  • proudgop

I think he will be Gov Nominee for GOP but I really do not think George Allen is best candidate for us.

  • jstjoan

But it’s a great idea. Heck, if he manages to get Obamacare repealed, he could run for anything he wanted to and likely win.

  • E Pluribus Unum

The only question would be, will he go for it? It’s not just the resume with this guy. He is one special dude.

Last week, on local talk radio, the host asked Cuccinelli about the Webb Senate seat. He said with no question or hesitation, he is not interested in the seat. He has already, and repeated once again that he will run for re-election as Atty. Gen., and left the door open for a run as VA Governor.

Please don’t ask Cuccinelli to run for a seat where he couldn’t possibly accomplish as much as he can here in our state. If anything, after a 4 year term as VA Gov., he will be ready for the Presidency. The Senate would be a waste of a brilliant, and conservative mind.

I would like to see him serve out his term as AG, he is doing a great job there. In the future he would be a great governor for us.

VA has several other strong, conservative, electable Republicans, who can likely defeat Webb in 2012.

While this is a good idea at the core, it would be a shame for Cuccinelli not to finish out his term as AG. As of last week he has completely ruled out this race, in the radio interview mentioned above. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2010/12/cuccinelli_confirms_he_is_cons.html

In 2013 he will either be running for re-election as Attorney General or running for Governor. It is my hope that he will bypass both of those offices and jump into the battle for the ages against Sen. Mark Warner for the other Virginia seat in the US Senate in 2014.

These posts need to be showcased for every potentially competitive Senate race (and that includes the blue states like New York and Washington, places where this blog sometimes was AWOL in promoting promising candidates in 2010).

Since Cuccinelli has made it clear he’s not running, who else is out there in Virginia? Liz Cheney is one name that springs to mind. Let’s look for someone who would be an exceptional public servant. My model is incoming Utah Senator Mike Lee: an accomplished career combined with an unquestioned commitment to constitutional principles and a robust pursuit of American ideals and interests abroad-but not necessarily elective office experience.

where he said no to the Senate seat, but maybe to the Governor position.

If I’m not mistaken, this page also includes an on-line poll of the possibilities for Webb’s seat. I’ll have to do some research on Jamie Radtke.

to my comment above concerning an interview, I am talking about a different interview that took place on WCHV with Joe Thomas, also last week. I’ve also linked the Washington Post interview above.

I am strongly against Cooch running for any Senate seat. He is so much better and brighter than a Senator. I believe that he will run for Governor, and, will beat Bill Bolling, current Lt. Governor by wide margins. I’ve read that Bolling is known as a moderate. No thanks.

    Allen v Webb rematch.
    McDonnell v Warner 2014
    Cuccinelli Reelected
LT Gov Bolling runs for Governor

  • jaydickb

He had his chance in 2006 and really blew it. I’m not sure he could beat Webb if Webb decides to run again, which he may not.

We need a stronger candidate than Allen. Cuccinelli would be a strong candidate, but he would also be a good AG or Governor. I’ll vote for him no matter what the office is.

  • Mike

….are missing, and you should definitely take a look at him.

Chris Saxman. I know for a fact that the state GOP wanted him to run in 08, but he declined, looking for a better opportunity at a later date. If I read him right, he might launch a primary campaign this time — and I honestly like him better than Allen.

And I think he’d absolutely destroy Allen at a convention fight. In a primary, not so much — Allen’s name recognition and formidable fundraising would be too much in Virginia. But in a convention?

I’d bet a bag of my favorite coffee that he’d wreck Allen in that fight. And I don’t mess around with coffee :D

  • Scope

much about Bill Bolling. During the last campaign I heard many call him a moderate. To be honest I voted strongly for McDonnell and Cuccinelli, and Boilling for the clean sweep. Bolling gave up “his turn” last time and let McDonnell run. It must have been because he knew that McDonnell had a much better shot at the win. If Cuccinelli runs for Gov. in 2013, it’s his. I think it may depend on where all of Coochs court challenges are at the time.

  • freemanja1991

I am not familiar with him. Whats his story. And last I heard there will be a primary not a convention for the GOP Senate Race in 12.

  • Mike

Here is something you might read, regarding his intentions:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Saxman#Potential_2008_Senate_Candidacy

Read that, then the following section on his withdrawal from his re-election campaign. I don’t have the contacts I once had out in the Shenandoah Valley, but I know for a fact he would’ve won in a landslide.

Maybe, just maybe, he’s looking at a shot at a higher seat.

  • Mike

I know that he would’ve beaten Gilmore like he stole something, no matter what type the race was. Allen is a good bit stronger, and his name runs deep in Virginia — but if Saxman can hang competitive with fundraising, I genuinely believe he is a better candidate than Allen.

And with the electorate the way it is, who knows? Maybe he could pull it off.

  • freemanja1991

I don’t live in Virgina. So I don’t get all the info. But I do know Bolling wants to run for Gov.
