Rossi gets in

Murray Rossi

Yesterday the word came down that Dino Rossi is in fact entering the Senate race against Patty Murray in Washington. Additionally, we have a University of Washington poll for May on the race that also came out the same day.

Let’s see how he’s starting out.

Previous polls had shown him only slightly behind Murray, and the UofW poll shows no different. Murray leads 44-40, with a margin of error 3.9. That puts Rossi at a 30% chance of being ahead per my model.

Rossi starts off behind, but campaigning should be expected to change that since Murray has been running for re-election all along, but Rossi has been sitting out. It’s a race in Washington.

Is Rossi pro-life?

Rossi Prolife

msbs05 (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 4:50PM EST (link)

From Life of the Party

While in the Washington State Senate, Rossi was one of only a few Republicans senators who voted in favor of a bill (SSB 6537 in 2002) to require hospitals to provide emergency contraception to any sexual assault victim who requested it within 72 hours of sexual contact.

Dino is Catholic and believes that every soul has a value. For him, this is an issue of conscience, and he’s not going to compromise his views just to be elected. As a state senator he never sponsored legislation, or even an amendment, on this issue.

Dino Rossi supports a woman’s right to use contraceptives.

In your view, does "contraceptives"=abortion?

RINKER Tuesday, May 25th at 4:56PM EST (link)

Just asking.

No

msbs05 (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 6:10PM EST (link)

To me, contraceptives are not an abortion, since it keeps the women from getting pregnant and an abortion is getting rid of an unwanted fetus. Some people believe the “quiver full” philosophy, that you should let God decide how many children you have, and they do not use contraceptives, but I do not personally take that stance.

I tried to list the info fully on Rossi, so everyone could make up their minds. Info came from his 2008 campaign.

The emergency contraception thing isn't pro-life

Sean (SIConservative) (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 9:51PM EST (link)

The morning after pill can be an abortifacient. As far as SSB 6537 is concerned, I’m not familiar with the bill, but it’s extremely troubling. Even many elected Democrats support conscience exemptions, and the majority of Americans also support the right of private hospitals (often Catholic) not to distribute emergency contraception.

Even so, he’s clearly better than Murray on that and a host of other issues. I’d still like to see him elected, but given this information I am no longer considering a financial contribution to his campaign. I’ll send my money to someone else.

Getting rid of Murray would be wonderful

Replacing her with Ronald McDonald would result in a distinct improvement in the average IQ of the Senate.

Can the Dems buy another one?

wonder95 Tuesday, May 25th at 5:08PM EST (link)

Let’s see if the Dems can buy this election the way they did the first one against Gregoire. They don’t have ACORN this time (who was convicted of “the largest case of voter fraud in state history”), but I’m sure that won’t stop them from trying.

One has to interpret this that Rossi doesn't put

much stock in the attacks that the DSCC has been leveling against him for the past couple of months, or else he presumably wouldn’t have jumped in.

Accusations of shady business dealings, for the most part.

Anyway, this has to be seen as an act of confidence on his part.

I’m a Democrat who’s so worried that my party’s fascist policies are going to cause us huge losses in November, that I’m coming to RedState to try to cause trouble.

Rossi can win.

thomasburkby Tuesday, May 25th at 6:18PM EST (link)

That Washington State has a Republican as attorney general demonstrates that a conservative can win state-wide, as Rossi would have done against Gregoire in the absence of fraudulent voting in King County (Seattle). That’s especially true now that people are seeing the disastrous results of socialism up close and personal.

This is not like supporting a RINO out of pragmatism. Rossi is no RINO. Admittedly, primary opponent Clint Didier is a good man and a fine conservative. However, I have no confidence that he is as adept at dealing with the media or going head to head with Murray in debate as Dino Rossi will be.

Further, on the west side of the state (where about 78% of the voters live) Didier is an unknown. He’s not even that well known on the east side of the mountains. Since approximately half the electorate has already voted for Rossi previously (against arguably a stronger opponent), the effort needed to win over an additional percentage point or two is nothing like the mountain Didier would have to climb in gaining enough independent support to win. Thus, while Didier might be a shade more pure ideologically, we should support Rossi. This is an even better chance of taking out a Left Coast Liberal than the Babbles Boxer race.

Murray is certainly vulnerable, but Republicans can never take a Senate race in the state of Washington for granted. The state is still liberal, and as Critz recently demonstrated, good campaigns can survive tough environments. This should prove a highly competitive race, but if people start taking it for granted as you suggest, I guarantee you 100% that we will lose.

Of course, SI

I am in no way suggesting that everybody should get on the bandwagon and make Dino push it. I’m just saying this – Rossi will win this going away.

As in, not close.

Now everybody, grab an oar and get to work!

If Rossi wins, it’ll be with less than 52%, probably less than 51%.

I love fun. Wanna bet?

E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Wednesday, May 26th at 3:23PM EST (link)

Totally as a side affair, knowing we’re all going to lean into it hard to get Patty the Brain ousted.

I’ll take Rossi for 54.500% and up, you take below. Sound good?

The stakes? A 12-pack of Fosters. I have a similar gentleman’s bet with djemi over the composition of the US House after January 1, 2011. I believe the bet is, I have 257 and up for GOP.

OK then, it is a wager

The race is winnable

Hiloconservative Tuesday, May 25th at 9:44PM EST (link)

Rossi can definitely win in this political climate, which is unlike any that Murray has ever faced. The only thing that kept him out in 2004 was King County, which kept producing uncounted votes for Gregoire every time he pulled ahead. Eventually they got the outcome they wanted and only then did they want to bring that matter to an end. Hopefully, he can win by a big enough margin that the machine bosses in King County can’t steal it, because I doubt all of those votes will be counted without them knowing how many it will take to put Murray ahead.

Go Rossi

proudgop (Diary) Tuesday, May 25th at 9:56PM EST (link)

I can’t remember but didn’t Murray say something controversial a while back about Obama? anyone remember what it was about?

Rossi will make it a race and he will help out congressional candidates in the state too

I hope he runs a different type of campaign though from previous 2 times;

Rossi needs to get Murray talking

Likely Dem, to Leans Dem, to Toss-up. Speaking of toss-up, thats what I feel like doing when I see Murray’s face.
Seattle is not in a good mood right now. A lot of people who tend to vote Dem, are sick of the government bs and failures. Didier being to the right of Rossi, may even get the nomination. Rossi best take care to stake out his positions carefully, making sure he’s in touch with the electorates mood. That being said, he’s a good campaigner and well known, and I’m glad he is running. The more choice for the primary the better.

Probably best sign of National Mood...

You’ve got a 3 term Democratic senator running against a Republican who has run for Governor twice. There is no “getting to know you time” needed.

I’m all for emergency contraception and abortion, but only for female offspring of Democratic congressmen (and women). In fact, I think the new health care law makes this mandatory (page 1793).

I’ll stick with Sarah Palin and the Tea Party, over the same old establishment. Maybe if Rossi had pulled his thumbs out of you-know-where earlier, he’d have our support.

Rossi, go home. Go Didier!
