Handel alone in first in a messy race

Oxendine Handel Deal

As we cross past midnight in Georgia, it becomes primary election day in that state. So let’s look at one more poll of the Republican side of the Governor’s race. There’s almost certainly going to be a primary runoff, but with three credible candidates and two spots, somebody’s going to be left out when the music stops.

According to Mason Dixon the one left out will be Nathan Deal.

Yes yes, we just saw a poll with Deal tied for first, but now Mason Dixon for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Deal’s in third. Just random noise? Genuine movement in an unstable multi-way race with several also-rans? We have no way of knowing.

But here’s what the poll says: Karen Handel leads at 29, John Oxendine is in second at 22, and Deal is just out of the runoff at 20 (MoE 5). With a Margin of Error that large, it’s nearly a coin flip between Oxendine and Deal for who’s really ahead of the other (57/43 Ox/Deal, per my model), so now we’re piling caveats on caveats.

But, in a multi-way race with no clear frontrunner, that’s all we’re ever going to do until the ballots are counted. We should count ourselves lucky we only have three candidates likely to make the runoff, honestly.

Where is Eric’s list of recommendations for the Georgia primaries. I did not print it out and now I need it!

I haven’t seen a single TV ad, mailer, or gotten a robo call from Handel campaign. But, I have seen/received all of the above from the other candidates. They have all been mean and deceptive. If I wasn’t one to do my research, I would vote for Karen just so none of the others could win.

This time, I printed it out. Now I am ready to go vote.

called him and said Karen Handel was NOT very Pro-Life. Didn’t change my vote but it did for my wife.

The good people of Georgia seem poised to follow the reccomendation of their next President and put Handel into the runoff, but who her opponent will be isn’t at all clear. There’s no reason to even bother trying to figure it out via the polling, it’s simply going to depend on turnout. Whoever has better machine, Deal or Ox, is probably going to get that second ticket into the runoff. I’m hopeful that it doesn’t really matter which one gets the ticket, it seems that Handel is likely to win either way, but certainly she’s going to need a good runoff campaign. Hopefully she will have the resources she needs to beat back whatever negative/smear campaigns might come her way, and it would be nice to see a really nice cushion between 1st and 2nd in the final vote tally. I look forward to seeing the results!

While I’d like Handel to win, I may vote for Deal to eliminate Ox.

And then vote for Handel in the Runoff

I meant to say, Neil, that there are four recent polls (see RCP for details) and three of them have Deal in 2nd and you picked the fourth one to focus on.

    Is there any particular reason?

for those voters still in need of this data, I suggest Political Insider James Galloway’s AJC article of June 3, 2010

    Handel has these pro-life endorsements.

I just voted and the gal at the poll said turnout had been “steady.”

I was number 421 to take a Republican ballot at 9:30 AM.

Around here, there are Oxendine signs on corners but not in yards.

Mostly handel signs in yards with one or two Deal signs.

My wife and I voted around 2:00 PM. The lady at the poll told my wife there has been only about 100 people in that voting location all day. There was no line of people waiting when we were there. I rarely watch television, but I have not seen any Haldel adds yet. If it were not for the internet news sources that I visit regularly, I would not even know Handel or Deal were on the ballot.
