Good evening. We have a great deal of new polling that’s flooded in. Much of it is interesting too, so rather than pick and choose which polls I’ll cover in depth and which I will omit, instead I’ll give a quick look at all the good ones.
We’ve got Senate races in Nevada, Connecticut, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, Missouri, and Delaware, plus races for Governor in Illinois, Rhode Island, New York, Hawaii, and Florida. I told you it was a lot.
Nevada: Republican Sharron Angle got her second straight poll lead, as CNN/Time has her up 42-40 (MoE 3.5). Still, when I see two candidates bouncing back and forth with tiny leads, I call the race effectively tied. Note the oddity though: CNN has RVs going Democrat Harry Reid +11 and LVs going Angle +2.
Connecticut: Republican Linda McMahon loses more ground as the same CNN poll puts her down 54-41 to Democrat Richard Blumenthal (MoE 3.5) and Rasmussen has her slip to 54-43 (MoE 4). Good week for Blumenthal, but this might stick.
West Virginia: Republican John Raese leads again over Democrat Joe Manchin 50-44 (MoE 4) per Rasmussen. The wheels might be coming off for Manchin, thanks to Barack Obama.
Ohio: The wheels might also be coming off for Democrat Lee Fisher as Quinnipiac puts Republican Rob Portman up 55-36 (MoE 3.1).
Missouri: Continuing the wheel-loss theme, CNN/Time has Republican Roy Blunt ahead of Democrat Robin Carnahan 53-40 (MoE 3.5).
Delaware: I don’t know if Republican Christine O’Donnell ever had the wheels on securely to begin with. Unless she turns Democrat Chris Coons into a newt, and ensures he doesn’t get better before election day, results like this Fairleigh Dickinson 53-36 showing (MoE 3.5) will just keep on coming.
And a pair of races in New York: Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand got a pair of much-needed double figure leads over Republican Joe DioGuardi from PPP (50-40, MoE 4) and that CNN/Time one (55-41, MoE 3.5). Likewise, CNN/Time has Republican Carl Paladino back down 41-55 (MoE 3.5) behind Democrat Andrew Cuomo in another seeming reversal of that post-primary bounce the New York Republicans got. We will have to watch that state.
In Illinois Democrat Pat Quinn seems to be overcoming the Blago curse and is at least only down 8 in Rasmussen to Republican Bill Brady, 46-38 (MoE 4.5).
Linc Chafee returns in Rhode Island as he leads the Rasmussen poll for Governor. As an independent Chafee has 33 to Democrat Frank Caprio’s 30 and Republican John Robitaille’s 22, MoE 4.. This is one independent run that seems to hurt the Republican, unlike the usual trend this year.
Hawaii is positioned possibly to return Republican Charles Djou to the House, and is also possibly ready to elect another Republican governor. Democrat Neil Abercrombie does lead in the Daily Kos/PPP poll, but Republican Duke Aiona only trails 47-49 (MoE 2.7). That’s competitive.
Ready for another Florida recount? Democrat Alex Sink leads the new poll but only 41-39 over Republican Rick Scott, MoE 3.5. The Zogby poll for TCPalm.com reverses Rick Scott’s recent leads, but keeps it so close we can’t be sure what will happen. Well, it’s Zogby, yeah, but at least it’s not Zogby Interactive.
If I had to name one trend for all of the above, I’d say we’re starting to get a picture of what the final battleground will be. Some states that one side or the other thought would be close, will not be, and the last pushes will be in the key states.
And again, here’s hoping for no ugly recounts!
Jeff Emanuel
I was just looking at that CNN poll and....
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 8:16PM EDT (link)found the whole thing a tad suspect as you yourself noted above. I will stick with Rasmussen as the ONLY polling that I will “trust”.

I watched a little of the Conn. debate
bobbymike (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 8:25PM EDT (link)How anyone could vote for that freak Blumenthal is beyond me.
I ask you does he not look and talk like a creepy, live with his mom, scare the neighborhood kids weirdo?
What’s he made of plastic?
His job creation answer should have put him down 20 points but it goes to show you that Democrats and liberals really are complete ignoramus’s and jackasses (thanks Rush for the accurate description) when it come to economic matters.
Blumey has spent his entire career destroying jobs and business. Ya that’s who we need in Washington.
I think these polls
ericc Wednesday, October 6th at 9:11PM EDT (link)were taken before the debate, but maybe I’m wrong about that.
I so badly want to believe that Blumenthal’s dreadful debate performance will move the needle back in our direction. How you can vote for somebody who so clearly demonstrated that he has absolutely no clue how jobs get created is beyond me.
Not only was his answer to that question inexcusable,
IronDioPriest (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 12:53AM EDT (link)but McMahon’s answer was so perfect and easy for even the most idiotic Leftist to understand. I don’t know HOW anyone who has a clue about the American entrepreneurial tradition could watch that and have a question as to which candidate is the right one. She literally knocked it out of the park and made him look like an utter fool.

That's absurd.
jsanzone (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 11:20PM EDT (link)Sure, he wasn’t ideal by anyone’s standards (except for, perhaps, ironically, the people of Delaware’s), but nothing about his voting record suggested imminent Specterism. He would have resembled Brown/Snowe/Collins in voting against/stopping some of the worst legislative initiatives, and oh, yeah, given us committee chairmanships and crucial SCOTUS nominee votes.
That’s a pretty high mounth you’re trying to climb.
http://www.2010blog.net
20/10 Blog
Are you really suggesting that
rsexteriors (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 1:39AM EDT (link)Castle would vote AGAINST an Obama SCOTUS nomination?
Does not matter if we control the committee because Snow, Collins, Graham, Brown, “Castle”, and other RINO’s would vote with the dems to CONFIRM anyways and then the Republicans really look like Smucks because they CONTROL the Senate but can’t stop a nominee from getting approved.
And don’t talk to me about filabuster because we can filibust with 48 or 49 just as well as we could with 51.
At some point Republicans have to decide if theri PLATFORM mean ANYTHING, Why have a platform and then go out and actively SUPPORT people like Castle who disagree and run against that platform and will vote against it??????????????????????????????????????????
Just so the Republicans can control committee’s and say we’re in charge???
Perhaps you should learn how the Senate works
Adjoran (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 2:22AM EDT (link)Controlling the committees is the key. Castle would never get to vote for an Obama nominee if Judiciary Chairman Sessions held them up in committee.
Castle’s lifetime ACU rating was 53 – pure squishy moderate, not “left liberal” as the insane posse claims. Castle would be with conservatives a little over half the time, including the votes mandated by the leadership as party votes. Coons will vote with the Democrats and Obama 90%+ of the time.
So your math skills need some brushing up, too.
If it’s a 50-50 Senate split with Biden giving the Dems control, every judge Obama gets confirmed will be thanks to people like you. Hope you are proud.
I am proud and PRINCIPLED
rsexteriors (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 10:44PM EDT (link)How do YOU know what committee assignment Castle will get? YOU DON”T. Isn’t your squishy Graham on that Committee? Isn’t he one of the main instigators of the “Gang of 14″ who promised no filibuster of judicial nominee’s?
Just a few RINO’S can and have screwed the whole Party in the past and will in the future. The majority of Republicans should not have to kiss Rino’s butt and allow them to block our agenda.
My math is fine. You say he has a ACU rating of 53. What VOTES. Sure he probably voted with the Republicans every time they wanted to name a road or bridge or post office and voted with the democrats on all important legilation.
NO every judge will not get confirmed if PRINCIPLED Republicans block those judges. Once we get rid of the RINO’s the Conservatives can stick together on such issues.
Who says Castle would be with us on the so-called Mandated votes?
You ASS-U-ME allot Adjoran.
If people like you were not Constantly trying to destroy O’Donnell she would be much closer now. I hope YOU are PROUD of YOURSELF.
Yeah, Castle spent a lot of time advocating for Obamacare and stimulus

He supported things like Cap & Trade, but it wasn’t like he was whoring for a camera in which to support Obama.
Castle was/is flawed from a policy perspective, but when you go beyond facts you beclown yourself.
Castle has been in Congress for a long time—he did far less damage to conservatism than John McCain did, and we all voted for McLame for President.
Did you know that China has been losing manufacturing jobs since 1995? For the specific data, see Table 1 in the following link: http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2005/07/art2full.pdf

rsexteriors (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 1:43AM EDT (link)We were all told to hold our nose and vote for McCain. McCain the Maverick because the Left LOVED McCain and we NEEDED him as our candidate so we could appeal to MODERATES and WIN.
How did that work out for us???????????
I’m tired of holding my nose and voting for RINO’s and I am not going to do it anymore. And I will financially support Conservatives over RINO’s in the primaries for now on.
No more compromising principles. When you do that you end up with a Republican Controlled congress full of Rino’s that do that EXACT OPPOSITE of what they were elected to do and then you end up with a Democrat SUPER MAJORITY and Barrack Obama.
That is OUR punishment for holding our nose and voting for RINO’s
That was then and this is now
reverelth (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 9:15PM EDT (link)Dems didn’t need 60 Specters to do the damage they did, just one.

It's a weird conundrum isn't it with the Judges -
cactusjack Wednesday, October 6th at 10:24PM EDT (link)Yes Orrin Hatch has lost his way. Yes he’s been there too long. Yes he is drifting in RINO seas with no power. Yes he needs to be gently led into the sunset so a fire-eater Mike Lee clone can become Utah’s second R-Senator. But if you like Roberts, Alito, Scalia and Thomas where they are – especially Thomas – thank Hatch, or at least save one kind thought for him. The wars in the Judiciary Committee were extremely bitter and nasty, it was basically Hatch vs. Kennedy plus Biden and Leahy – and Hatch won.
Besides,t hat's a straw man
Neil Stevens (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 8:48PM EDT (link)Nobody advocated 60 Specters.

What GOOD
rsexteriors (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 8:59PM EDT (link)are the squishes?
A majority with 8 “squishes” is NOT a majority. When you have 8 of your own party voting AGAINST you and BLOCKING your agenda you get NOTHING CONSERVATIVE done. The democrats effectively control the legislation because of those “Squishes”, but then the Republicans take the BLAME for getting nothing done or even worse getting the wrong things done.
The 8 “Squishes” end up CONTROLLING EVERYTHING.
I would rather a large minority then a squishy majority
I have mixed feeling on this, but can anyone tell me
earlgrey (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 9:03PM EDT (link)what about MIke Castle was Repubican (other than his spot on the ballot)?
I am not trying to come off as a smarr$$$. I just know he liked cap and trade, which even some dems didn’t support, and he authored the DISCLOSE Act. Instead of reaching across the aisle, seems he’d be more likely sitting in it.
The Republican Party is changing
Locke (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 10:28PM EDT (link)Whether there is room in the new party for liberals like Castle and the Maine sisters, I don’t know. But as to the old party, the problem is that it hasn’t stood for anything, at least not consistently, which means that there is no clear criterion for what is and what isn’t a real Republican.
In 2008 Castle was rated by The Club for Growth as the most liberal (or strictly speaking, anti-growth) R, but less liberal than 245 Ds. http://www.clubforgrowth.org/projects/scorecard/
His ACU ratings for 2009, 2008 and life were 56, 28 and 52.49.
http://www.conservative.org/ratings/ratingsarchive/2009/House%20Ratings.htm
That 28 stinks, but otherwise the ratings are consistent with his being a “moderate” in a party in which Ronald Reagan was an exception and Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, and John McCain represented the norm.
Reagan was not the exception
rsexteriors (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 10:45PM EDT (link)Of the four (Reagan / Dole / McCain and Ford) who won with LAND SLIDE victories? Thats right Dole /McCain and Ford were NEVER ELECTED at all let alone with Landslide victories.
The difference is that what there is a TRUE CONSERVATIVE, that does not appoligize for being a conservative, running then they will WIN because most of this country is Conservative.
The problem is with the Republicans constantly wanting to PLEASE the media and the left and running RINO republicans. Who did the press want as our candidate in 2008. Thats right McCain and they got him and we lost.
If there had been a real CHOICE in 2008 Obama would have lost.
We have for way to long allowed the press and the dim wit democrats to DEFINE us and have went along with the “Big Tent” Bull. Conservative are a BIG TENT. a big majority of this country. Electing Rino Republicans only benefits the democrats and hurts the Conservative brand because the voters mistake the “R” after their name as being a conservative.
All we have to do is field good Conservative candidates and insist they stick to their promises and we will be in power for a long time
Clarification
rsexteriors (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 10:47PM EDT (link)I meant they were never elected President when they ran
Reagan was an exception. He stood for something; he stood for the right things
Locke (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 11:49PM EDT (link)In contrast to other Republican presidential candidates going back to Hoover (except Goldwater – another exception, but one that did not end well).
The Bushes stood for conservatism, the “kindler, gentler” father who agreed to Democrat tax increases, and the “compassionate” son, who created a new entitlement and agreed to Democrat spending and McCain-Feingold. Among other things. Conservative, yes, but with more than enough liberalism to muddy the waters and allow a Castle to say, “I’m just a little more liberal than that” .
Thats why Reagan got Elected
rsexteriors (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 10:47PM EDT (link)He stood for his Conservative Principles and did not Apologize for it.
The other ones you listed are the “Big Tent” Kiss the Democrats butts type and that is why the lost.
We do not have to worry about not having a majority if we do not moderated and accept candidates that are pro abortion and pro socialist policies.
If we would stop that and run solid Conservative candidates that do what they promised to do then the Republicans would be in the majority for a long long time.
So you'd rather elect Democrats? (nt)

Why is it that some from our side feel that the absolute only way to a majority is to kiss a bunch or RINO’s butts?
We just need good Conservative Candidates and after Novemeber 2nd there will be many more Conservatives willing to run in 2012.
It is harder to get true Conservative candidates because most do not aspire to be politicians and do not relish having their character destroyed by not only Liberals but the Republican party as well. Most of them are out earning a living

Good comment jeffreywturner
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 9:35PM EDT (link)Although I would say that sending a Marxist to DC, to teach the “establishment republicans” a lesson would be a little off. The message would be against the “conservatives.” Isn’t O’Donnell the anti-establishment?
As they say, the Republicans always know how to snatch defeat from victory. Nope, O’Donnell wasn’t a pure enough, or a candidate that could win. That mantra started long before the primary. I’m talking about the Republican perceptions here, and especially the damage Rove did to her. It happened right here on this site. No comments about the opponent, Coons, the Marxist, just that O’Donnell couldn’t possibly win. Even though Castle was a known Liberal quantity, O’Donnell got the bashing and trashing, even after she “won” the primary. Great job in possibly giving the seat to a D. If she doesn’t win, it will be more because of the so-called Republicans than it will be the damage inflicted by the Dems. No one could have done her more damage than some in her own party. Teachable moment? I absolutely go with Rush, those that are embarassed by O’Donnell, Paladino or even Palin are those that are not serious about getting rid of the Progressives that are destroying this country. Talk about purity tests.
Right, Scope.
realskinny (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 10:47PM EDT (link)Rove and Dr. K did a great deal of damage to her by continuing to trash her after the primary as though Castle could be resurrected. Rove even disseminated several pages of talking points against her after the primary.

jeffreywturner (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 12:12AM EDT (link)Have no doubt, I would LOVE to be proven wrong and see Christine actually win.
In fact a victory for her would give me great personal satisfaction as I might get to see Keith Olberman’s head literally explode live on election night.
I am just facing reality though.
Look, I love Jim Demint. He is my Senator. But with all due respect, it is easy for him to be so cavalier in his call for ideological purity when he hails from my beloved South Carolina (the best Carolina, though NC should’t feel bad, they are second best and that is still pretty good). Nobody was more pissed off than I was about the Gang of 14, and I am all for a primary challenge to Lindsey Graham. SC should rightly have 2 solidly conservative Senators. However, DE is not SC. Getting a guy like Castle in the Senate from DE would be pretty darn good, just like getting Brown in MA was pretty good. Give Castle a break. You guys are acting like he was another Lincoln Chafee, who essentially NEVER voted with conservatives. Chafee really was useless. Castle would vote with conservatives at least half the time and maybe more.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
Not sure you got what I was saying.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:48PM EDT (link)The “purist” conservatives got it in their mind that they would “teach establishment Republicans a lesson” by defeating the establishment’s chosen candidate, Mr. Castle.
So, in order to teach this lesson, the purists took out Mr. Castle by nominating a lightweight with little or no chance of victory, thereby making the Marxist Coon’s ascension to the US Senate a near certainty.
Again, I say that is an expensive lesson, and my purist friends may be cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
On a personal note, let me just say I am in no way ashamed of Ms. O’Donnell, and I absolutely LOVE Sarah. Nothing would make me happier than to see Sarah Palin issue a beatdown to Obama and replace him as President in 2012. However, I have what is called a “brain”. And as much as I love Sarah Palin, I would not advise her to run for Senate if she happened to reside in a liberal state like California. By the same token, we shouldn’t run candidates like Christine O’Donnell in a liberal state like Delaware.

pilgrim (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 12:05AM EDT (link)Registered GOP voters in Delaware are the only ones who voted in the DE primary, and a majority of them voted for O’Donnell. Are you calling all of them “purist” conservatives? What you are saying about “purist” conservatives makes absolutely no sense.
Are you from the future? If you are not from the future you can not declare that there is no chance of victory. Talk about absolute certainty about a defeat before the vote takes place sounds like troll talk to me.
Actually yes, those would be the folks.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 9:19PM EDT (link)You say “purist” as if that is a derogatory term. Do you think being a purist is a bad thing? If you do, then that says more about you than it does about me, now doesn’t it?
Furthermore, I would place my conservative credentials up against about anyone on this site.
Now, as to your point, given that registered Republicans probably make up about a third of Delaware voters, and probably about half of that number turned out to vote, and just over half of that number voted for O’Donnell. So, that means about what, 9%, give or take, of the people of Delaware are the who we are talking about here. And yes, I think it is safe to say 9% of the folks are “conservative purists”. Not that this is a bad thing. I just consider myself to be more of a conservative “realist” myself.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
another way of looking at it is
pilgrim (Diary) Sunday, October 10th at 2:34PM EDT (link)The registered Republicans that believed Castle would be the very best nominee for the general election were not enthusiastic enough in their belief to bother to show up at the polls in sufficient enough numbers to win the primary. If you want to continue to be disappointed at the Delaware voters don’t look for any sympathy from me.
Perhaps you didn't read my original post thoroughly.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Monday, October 11th at 1:15AM EDT (link)I am not looking for sympathy, and I want Christine to win.
I didn’t say I didn’t want to see any more DE polls period. I said I didn’t want to see them unless they were good for Christine. Big difference.
I am just disappointed in the shortsightedness of some folks that I genuinely feel are on “my side”, and every time I see another poll showing a blowout for Commie Coons it is like rubbing salt in an open wound.

I think O’Donnell hurts the Republican brand in general this election, she’s become the face of the tea party. I can’t tell you how many non-political people know about her. She’s a joke.
There’s more to nominating someone than slogans, we need competent, intelligent, and VIABLE conservatives if we want to defeat the Left in this country. This isn’t amateur hour.

You prefer Marxists over RINOs?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
JSobieski (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 8:46AM EDT (link)You must be pretty happy with the time period from 2009 to the present.
Marxists over RINOs (is there a better way to characterize the 2008 Presidential election) is exactly why we have Obamacare. RINOs like McCain are also precisely why the Senate couldn’t pass Cap & Trade. If we had a Senate limited to 30 DeMints Cap & Trade would already be law, and even harder to unravel than Obamacare due to the creation of artificial markets.
RINOS are better than Marxists. Conservatives are better than RINOs. Preferring Marxists over RINOs is bad if you care about the country.
I do not love the fact that some “snot nosed” and “perfect” conservatives “would rather watch our Country die” and express a preference for a Marxist over a RINO.
The country is dying, and you are expressing a preference for Obama over people who managed not to destroy their country during their tenure.
Do not support Marxists, not even to make a “snot nosed” point.

I Reserve Judgement on DE SEN For The Next Two Weeks
IJB Wednesday, October 6th at 8:53PM EDT (link)O’Donnell has just gotten her first ad up, so I’m inclined to give her two weeks to see if her advertising (I’m hoping this new ad will be followed up with a couple of more, at least one of which will hopefully be a Coons attack ad) moves any numbers. Yeah, it’s possible that everyone in DE has already made up their minds about her. But with polling still showing Castle would have beaten Coons soundly, this tells me that Coons’ support is weak – O’Donnell has a chance to peel off some of that support if she runs the right ad combo.
On CT, I want to wait a week or two to see if those numbers ‘firm’ for Blum. – two weeks ago, there seemed to be a ‘surge’ for Patty Murray, but that fell away after about a week. I suspect we’ll see the same thing in CT, and in 1-2 weeks it would not surprise me if CT is back to a 48%-45% race. Also, the GOV’s race is tightening there, and that may help McMahon.
The credible polls in NY still seem to show Gillibrand right at 50%, which still tells me she’s beatable. The NY GOV polls have been all over the map to such an extent that I’m not sure I trust any of them right now. In any case, I haven’t written off NY yet (and we still look good to gain 2-6 House seats in NY alone!).
Of the most recent polling, I really think the most encouraging bits are HI GOV being much closer than we were led to believe (ditto HI-01); CT GOV closing (and even in RI GOV the GOP candidate has finally broken 20%!); and OH, PA, WI and WV SEN polling all firming up for us.
Right now, it looks very likely that we’re going to end up with a 50-50 Senate (likely *without* Harry Reid). If that happens, it should be fun – the D’s will still “own” the Senate, but with only 50 votes they’ll be incapable of managing it. At all. That’ll be a blast.
P.S. Looking at all of the available House polling out there, things are still all bad for the Dems – it really does seem like +60 might be the GOP’s *floor* right now!

Senate Races
proudgop (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 9:11PM EDT (link)Listen CT was always going to be tough for us to win minus Dodd. I mean the last Republican to win a Senate Race in the state was Prescott Bush I think. I also fear a lot senior citizens are turned off by wrestling aspect to Linda.
I am happy with movement we saw this week in WV move into our column the NRSC ran great ads: A vote for Manchin is vote for Obama and we have seen movement in CO for us ( minus PPP poll) and a slight uptick for Kirk in IL as well as Angle in NV
I need to see poll in WA but I still would have to give Dino underdog aspect because of nature of state.
On NY as I have said in NYC its dead. 2 years ago was my first Presidential election in this city and I have to admit the Democrat machine was damn impressive ( at every subway stop, knocking on doors, a lot rallies, signs galore/pins, people passing stuff out on subways) and I have seen nothing minus some ads ( in fact Chuck Schummer has most ads out now which is odd and he doesn’t even mention Democrat in his ad or Obama) and Gillibrand first ad notes she took on her own part. Heck, we want as low as possible turnout in city as possible so
DiGordio needs money but I think he can call Gillibrand a flip flopper on a lot positions and tie her to Patterson he might have a chance ( slim but I’d think perhaps we have better shot here then even CT now)
I guess I can accept that loss in CT, but someday, somehow we must make it possible for an R to win in these states.
earlgrey (Diary) Wednesday, October 6th at 9:26PM EDT (link)I guess that is what gets me. Do we write off certain states (Ok, maybe Vermont), and only fight in the purple ones? Perhaps too deep for a weeknight, but most of us are in it for the long haul and if the past two years isn’t enough to change minds, than what will?

But if either faced a strong challenger that they could lose a primary to, they’d do what most politicians do and thats try and save their own hide. They look at others like Crist and Murkowski and know they probably couldn’t pull off an independent run so they’d switch. They have the popularity and the political environment in their state to pull it off.
And who would provide that "strong challenge"?
mbecker908 (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 8:40AM EDT (link)You have absolutely no fact – pesky things – on your side. The only thing you’ve got is an intense dislike of the ME Girls, who BTW, have never really cast a vote that hurt our side. They’ve both cast lots of non-conservative votes, but typically on issues where the vote was well decided and theirs didn’t make a difference. On a few controversial issues where the vote was close neither has ever taken the lead to break ranks they’ve followed others – most notably Specter – and again, their vote didn’t make a difference to the outcome.
Frankly, somebody like Graham or Voinavich does a whole lot more damage than either Snowe or Collins. They’ve been pretty reliable on our side – albeit tenuously at times – their whole career but overall they’ve done no real damage.
As conservative as possible - that should be the test

Allow the incumbent a margin for fear, but require that he continually push the envelope. That means being at least a little more conservative than his constituents.

Kay Bailey Hutchison, Richard Lugar, Lamar Alexander, Thad Cochran, Orrin Hatch, Mike Crapo: probably fail.
Snowe and Collins: don’t know.
Ideology is far from the only element of electability. Maybe there are more likeable or charismatic or articulate candidates than Snowe and Collins who could be more conservative and still be no less electable. That’s what Maine Republicans should look for in a primary challenger.

P.S. Does anyone remember the “maverick 8 or 12″ group of “moderate republicans and democrats” that controlled the senate for many issues that came up? You're making false presumptions here
Finrod (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 4:29PM EDT (link)You’re assuming we knew in advance that O’Connell has no chance of winning this seat (a presumption that I still don’t think is valid). In a wave year like we’re looking at (Scott Brown), that isn’t valid. Who would have thought as recently as three months ago we’d even have a chance in Wisconsin against an entrenched incumbent– a state Rasmussen now has in the Lean GOP column.
Running O’Connell instead of Castle is a high-risk, high-reward strategy, like I was saying. Of course getting Coons instead of Castle is a loss, but getting O’Donnell instead of either is a fairly big win.
I also think we need to be looking at the bigger picture beyond just one election. From the reports I’ve read, the Delaware GOP seems to be very calcified, always running ruling-class moderates and liberals, providing an echo, not a choice. O’Donnell may be the start of breaking that up and rejuvenating the party in Delaware. In the end, that could be a bigger benefit in the long run than losing one Senate election. Turning blue states into purple states moves battlegrounds onto our opponents’ territory and shrinks their safe areas. This also means, presuming she would want to run again, that we already have a vetted conservative candidate for DE Sen in 2012 (and 2014 if it comes to that).

Scope (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 7:29PM EDT (link)The Dems, with their majorities in both houses this year, could have passed anything they wanted. They worked hard to peel off some of the squishy R’s in order to claim their bills were “bipartisan.” Now you have the D’s running so far from their voting record that you would think they had the devil chasing them. Hey, they do, imagine that.
I'd rather have majority power on the Judicial Committee....
tacoslayer (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 9:01PM EDT (link)But who needs Political Power when we have our holier than thou ideology to keep us safe from an Obama loaded SCOTUS…..
Right??
Castle was a turd.
But he was our turd.
Castle would have beat Coons….probably rather handily. But who needs victories when we have righteousness….Right??
You can rail on about Coons the bearded marxist all you want….if you really think you are going to swing any Coons voters over to O’Donnell I gotta piece of Tuscon oceanfront for you….
But don’t let me stop you from preaching to the choir.
Tacoslayer, Castle isn't an option.
Aaron Gardner (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 9:26PM EDT (link)Either support our new turd or STFU.
Do you understand now?

I understand that DE is now done.
tacoslayer (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:26PM EDT (link)And I suspect you’ll be among the first to start whining when Obama loads the courts.
Do you understand now??
Hardheads and asses
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:45PM EDT (link)don’t last long around here. You do not have to like the rules, but you are in another house, common courtesy dictates you follow the rules or show yourself to the door.
Rules are easy here, conservative in Primary, republican in general. The next rule is even easier, If you do not like who the people chose, that is your business, but we do not damage the party or the person running. If you do not like the peoples choice, stay silent. The time for debate and campaigning was right up to the results came in for the primary. After that it is either support the choice or stay silent. Not that hard, but it is written in stone.
There are no first amendment rights at private sites and this one is no exception. If you persist, they will show you the door. If you feel that strongly about the decision made the people in Delaware, start your own blog and express that viewpoint. But in this house you must respect the rules of the owner. That is simple courtesy and respect, which so far you have shown you possess little of either!
Well, there are
aesthete (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 12:07AM EDT (link)but they apply only to government (i.e., the feds can’t make a law banning political speech on RS).
“It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.”
-P.J. O’Rourke
You are correct
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 1:18AM EDT (link)I was simply referring to the fact that a private party can restrict or even eliminate speech on their property. I have always loved the cries of “1st Amendment rights” on sites when the host site bans certain speech.
But you are much more correct than I was. I should have been more specific.
tacoslayer, what's the matter, don't like taking your own advice?
Aaron Gardner (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 12:03AM EDT (link)Or was that just a show to earn you some modicum of credibility that you could then burn later?
conform and celebrate diversity….or else!!!

This is too funny,
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 1:15AM EDT (link)how much do you want to bet, after being shown to be hypocritical and/or a liar, that he comes back and claims his friend, brother, wife, husband, partner, dog used his computer and this account without his permission.
powertothepeople is correct
Bill S (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 12:22AM EDT (link)And I suggest you heed the advice therein and support the nominee that was chosen by the voters of Delaware.

This pro-Castle argument is laughable, since
JSobieski (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 12:24AM EDT (link)Senator Grahamnasty votes in favor of Obama’s picks on the Senate floor, the idea that he would vote on the J committee to bottle up the nominee is ABSOLUTE WISHFUL THINKING.
You would have more likelihood of success hoping for power failures to prevent the committee hearing from ever occurring.
As long as Graham is on judiciary, there was and always will be a 0% chance of what you describe actually occurring.
51 Rs are not enough to stop Obama’s picks, and there is little reason to think that Castle would be to the right of Senator Graham.

Hawaii in play
Hiloconservative Wednesday, October 6th at 11:01PM EDT (link)Don’t write Hawai`i off yet despite the state’s partisan lean. Abercrombie has basically repackaged Obama’s empty platuitudes of two years ago and is trying to re-run the 2008 race. He’s promised the moon but provided no plan on how to get there or pay for it and Aiona has been hammering him on it. Aiona and his running mate Lynn Finnegan are both dynamic, young, attractive and running hard, while Abercrombie and his running mate have ben acting like they were already elected. That PPP Poll also found that Obama is only at 53 percent in a state where he is a favorite sun. Charles Djou also stands a very good chance at beating Colleen Hanabusa who doesn’t even live in the district and has already run for congress 3 times from the safety of her senate seat that she refuses to give up.

One factor in DE that keeps getting ignored
civil truth (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 3:46AM EDT (link)Which is that Castle has refused to endorse O’Donnell. Following a close primary, particularly in a blue-leaning state like Delaware, the failure of Castle to close ranks is a key factor in O’Donnell being so far down.
(And for all I know, he may be actively working against her in Republican circles.)
Not to mention that attacks from other leading Republicans against her right after the primary plus the media assassination about her high school days (witch) right after the primary, when undecideds were forming their first impressions of her immediately turned many undecideds against her, making a comeback even more difficult – while ignoring Coons youthful Marxist papers.
Could O’Donnell have won – hard to tell, but her loss doesn’t send any clear lessons for 2012 – except that “moderates” who act like poor sports and attack (or at least publicly fail to support) their party’s nominee (clearing showing that they prefer Marxist Democrats over conservative Republicans) are almost surely going to tip the balance against a marginal candidate – especially when the media play the macaca game.
Not that O’Donnell didn’t have weaknesses – but it’s hard for such a candidate to win a war on two fronts in a state like Delaware.
I hope that our “moderates” Republican leaders enjoy their appointment with death camps, if they should get their way.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

proudgop (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 8:18AM EDT (link)needs a better run camapaign. I go to her facebook page daily and she hasn’t shown anything to indicate she is on the ground daily meeting the voters it almost seems she is hiding
she has 2.6 mill and yet she finally just aired her first ad. the clock is ticking she is down at least 3 touchdowns
DE's Senate race is so bogged down with other issues
aesthete (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 9:39PM EDT (link)that extrapolating anything about the state of conservatism based on the results of the race is useless. O’Donnell’s personal baggage, the race having focused on her past as a “ban everything for the children”-type talk show personality, and lack of articulation of conservative principles makes this race more an outlier than anything else.
I’ll say this: some very popular conservatives really dragged themselves and the conservative movement in the mud by impugning the character of conservatives who weren’t sold on O’Donnell, and that is more
“It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.”

And some very popular
rsexteriors (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:04PM EDT (link)Republicans, and many here on RS, not only tried to destroy her during the Primary, but committee the ultimate sin of trying to ensure she loses the General by continuing to try to destroy her for days after she won the primary.
Name one person on Redstate
aesthete (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:17PM EDT (link)who did such a thing. Hint: informing prospective voters of their choice does not count as “destroying” her. I highly doubt you could find a single person on RS who prefers Coons to O’Donnell (though unfortunately, there are plenty who would have preferred Coons to Castle).

Anyone who declared she could not win the general
reverelth (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 9:17AM EDT (link)from the prospective of the primary, was tossing her eventual opponent just that red meat.
Notice that is a fetish of Republicans that Democrats don’t do a lot of?
That’s not “informing prospective voters.”

I'm not starting a flame war
rsexteriors (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 10:08PM EDT (link)The FACT is that many did repeatedly keep coming on RS for days after the primary and continue to bash O’Donnell. That is just FACT…
I have not seen anyone say they actually prefer Coons over O’donnell, but some like YOU do seem to be working for that outcome.
If your saying that anyone who supports or supported O’Donnell in the primary actually wants Coons to win then your obviously just an idiot.
I supported and support O’Donnell because she was the best Conservative in the race.
Any I still say that she is going to WIN WIN WIN.
Everyone is talking like the race is over. IT IS NOT.

Some thoughts:
aesthete (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:12PM EDT (link)Things I liked:
O’Donnell did not come off as shrill.
Platitudes supporting the Constitution, and more specifically, renouncing ideas that she will vote based on her religious beliefs. (I liked her answer about Creationism in public schools.)
Support for the Bush tax cuts.
Things I didn’t like:
Apparently supports forcing health insurance providers to provide their services to people with pre-existing conditions (something which is neither the Constitutional purview of Congress, nor a particularly good thing to do from a free market standpoint).
Lacks a solid position on global warming legislation. Isn’t that what stunk about Castle (and Newt/Pawlenty, for that matter)?
Supports the Bush tax cuts for the wrong reason (Laffer Curve, etc), but I’ll give her a pass since many conservatives and libertarians find themselves perpetually wrong concerning the effectiveness of tax cuts for the federal budget.

Short interview
SteveLA (Diary) Thursday, October 7th at 11:20PM EDT (link)It was a short interview, not even really an interview at all.
I’m not sure how O’Donnell would do with say a Chris Wallace interview or some other media heavyweight. So I’m not sure if this was toe in the water test sort of thing or is Ms. O’Donnell going to start giving interviews to media who ask tough questions.

Competency over ideological purity and litmus tests
Because Coons is giving interviews with those who ask tough questions?
reverelth (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 9:12AM EDT (link)Granted she has to play offense while he can play defense.
Does Harry Reid do them?
This business of having to do tough interviews is a recylcled, and hypocritical, lefty meme.

reverelth- Agreed
Scope (Diary) Friday, October 8th at 9:37AM EDT (link)Because almost the entire MSM are partisan hacks, our people don’t need to put themselves up in front of a firing squad, just waiting for the bullet that will take them down. So many of the Democrats are outright making things up against the Republican candidates, for example the made up story that Boehner was having an affair, we don’t need to play in their muddied playground. All they have to do is get a rumor started, or misstated, and it multiplies across the nation.
With the rare times that you see any Dems on the alphabet networks, they are a protected class. When Republicans go on those same shows, it is gottcha time, all the way back to their high school days. If anyone wants to see an O’Donnell interview, go back and watch the Hannity interview. Palin was correct on this one, she needs to speak to those that will be voting for her, not the media that tries to destroy people. I remember Fred Thompson saying, the media likes to take you up as high as they can, just so they have that much further to take you down.
