Joe Miller in third? Not so fast.

Miller McAdams

Continuing Politico’s apparent strategy of linking to obscure polls that say bad things about Republicans for shock and traffic value in this wave year, the site now reports Joe Miller to be in last place.

For several reasons, one has to discount this poll’s predictiveness of the coming election.

First off, according to Politico, the poll was commissioned by a Democrat-friendly site The Mudflats (which is apparently inaccessible at present due to attention drawn by Politico). Without seeing the details of question order, rotation, and other details so often not reported in the poll-ignorant press, we can’t even guess what kinds of bias were averted or not.

Second, Politico reports that the poll had no screening of respondents. That there was no checking for registered voter status even suggests the poll’s designers at The Mudflats either weren’t interested in or don’t even know the best practices of the industry needed to make horserace political polling predictive of elections.

Third, again, even with the latest court decision voters will not have Lisa Murkowski’s name in front of them without taking specific, unprompted action. Her voters have a higher hurdle than either Republican Joe Miller’s or even Democrat Scott McAdams’s.

Oh, and not really related to the poll, but fourthly: only Politico could take word that the NRSC is spending a half million dollars on Miller’s behalf, and turn it into bad news for him. Because seriously, after the Orion poll and now this, what’s next for Politico? Some guy in his basement reporting Barbara Boxer 18 points over Carly Fiorina? Brace for it.

Miller Will Win

victrola Thursday, October 28th at 1:29PM EDT (link)

I will say that’s a really good thing Murkowski’s name doesn’t actually appear on the ballot, I think Miller would be in real trouble.

I just don’t see a write in candidate winning a statewide election, and it looks like Murkowski is pulling heavily from the Democrat. I see her ending up with 10%-15% of the vote, and most of it taken out of the Dem’s hide.

Remember how to spell it now....

Write in Ruling From Alaska Supreme Court

What is it about "write-in" does the court not understand?

GregInFla (Diary) Thursday, October 28th at 10:56PM EDT (link)

it means you write in the name. From what Sarah Palain said on Hannity today, if someone just writes “L-I-S-A-C-O-W-S-K-I” they can count it towards Murkowski.

Dumbocrats loving their lies

jollygiantsd (Diary) Thursday, October 28th at 1:40PM EDT (link)

Even the KosKids are using this new poll of lies and running with it.
Of course in my state of FL, they lie about how Sink is 8 points ahead, not 8 points behind (at the time, her massive lies commercials must be changing a few peoples minds as she is now 4% behind). I see they recently changed this to say she is 2 points behind now 47-45% instead of the real 48 (or 49-50% depending on the polling source) to her 44-45%. The story thsy link even says specifically “…but by 4 points (48-44) among those who say they are most likely to vote.” 4 points is a big difference from 2 points.
Of course we know they will be crying foul when their illegal votes and bullying failto get their Commie Sink in office.

Is there really any good polling of Alaska?

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, October 28th at 2:00PM EDT (link)

Given the small numbers, the geographic distances between various subcultures (how do you travel to all these outposts on a limited budget) and the mishmash of ideology and relationships, how can one find a representative sample.

And how many people who say they will write in actually take the trouble to do so? It’s very hard to model that since write-in candidacies are so rarely a significant factor.

I would discount pretty much all polls at this time and wait to see the results of the only one that matters – Nov 2nd.

THe other issue here is how is the SOS going to count votes.

Minor mis-spleelings count

chihank Thursday, October 28th at 2:16PM EDT (link)

The AK Division of Elections says minor mis-spelling will count.

Say someone write-ins “Murkcowsky”, then the vote will count. But if someone write-in “Lisa M” or “Senator Lisa”, then it won’t count.

Expect lawsuits filed by Murkowski to demand all mis-spellings count on grounds of voter intent. The Murkowski camp will insist that write-ins of “Political Whore” or “RINO Witch” to count in their favor.

Pretty sure they said "Lisa M" *would* count (nt)

What if a few people write in Larry Murkowski, Lisa Miller, Lance Murcowski, Lisa Sue Murkowski, wouldn’t these people have an equal claim on those votes that might otherwise be given to Lisa Murkowski because they are attributed to miss-spellings or incomplete names?

For instance, if 1000 Lisa Murkowski voters simply write “Murkowski,” who is to say that those weren’t intended for Larry instead of Lisa. Likewise, if 500 write “Lisa M,” couldn’t those be just as much Lisa Miller’s votes as Lisa Murkowski’s?

There is no reliable polling here

fbks (Diary) Thursday, October 28th at 2:40PM EDT (link)

anything from Mudflats is very suspect. These so called polls are released for the benefit of influencing the election, rather than taking a realisitc snapshot of where the election really is. Miller should have dealt with his Borough issues months ago instead of allowing the rumours to fester for months and now in front of voters the last few days of the election.
If Lisa wins she will be the worst type of Republican, she is beholden to maintaining corrupt interests of the Native Corporations and openly courting Dem voters. The Corporation leaders and AFN are behind Lisa, but many rural voters do not like her and will go with the Dem. Rural goes Dem for almost all candidates which indicates that Lisa is exhibit “A” of a RINO.
McAdams admits he is a full on progressive liberal Democrat. The unions are split between Lisa and Scott. The reason I support Miller is although he has the ethics issue at the Borough and is running a poor campaign, he is far and above the best on the actual issues. Lisa is wrong on the issues and has been involved with more serious ethics issues as a sitting senator.

If Republicans were smart

victrola Thursday, October 28th at 5:01PM EDT (link)

They’d have someone with a similar last name throw her hat in the ring.

My guess is the name would then have to be spelled exactly the same in a situation like this, otherwise, how could you determine who the vote was for?

[Look, a jeep!]

ThinkFirstThenVote Thursday, October 28th at 6:30PM EDT (link)

Check with your friends and relatives in AK

My sister said she gets a lot of calls polling her – and she’s never been involved with either party so who knows how they got her number.
But she voted for Miller in the primary – has always voted Republican — and she’s not voting for him now — and she says she doesn’t know anyone there who’s voting for him now. She’s voting Murkowski.

Honestly, I think it’s hard for any Alaskan to say they’re for limited government with a straight face.

They pay no state income tax, they get 184% back for anything they do pay in federal taxes, they get permanent fund checks and when oil went up, Palin made the simplistic decision to simply divide up the cash and send out more checks to each and every citizen (which meant 7 checks for her household). And then of course, they ask for the lower 48 to kick in more the next year for all the infrastructure they need. Uncle Teddy was how they referred to Ted Stevens because he brought ridiculous amounts of pork back to their state.

I’d say Joe is done — and the Tea Party needs to do a little more vetting of their candidates and not pick a lawyer to lets his beard grow out so he looks a little more “rugged” and Alaska-like to get elected.

I'm sure you think you're really clever.

I doubt you live in Alaska

fbks (Diary) Thursday, October 28th at 8:16PM EDT (link)

and your post is unhelpful. It is really difficult to predict how this election will go and there are very powerful and corrupt interests behind Lisa. The reason the issue of ethics is pounded so hard for Miller is because his base tends to be Christian and the idea is to brand him as unethical.
Miller’s incident at the Borough are wrong, no doubt, and his campaign is not run well. As a sitting senator Lisa was the subject of an ethic’s complaint which could have resulted in a prosecution. The reasons she avoided the prosecution are not clear.
The election will come down to voter turn out. The only reason I have not yet voted is I am suspicious of the integrity of the division of elections. I do not want my vote thrown out with a batch of early ballots through some legal finding. It is critical to keep this seat from the Dem, and I predict Lisa would be very problematical for a Republican parity or small majority in the senate.
Miller is right on the issues and Lisa is both unethical and wrong on the issues. Not to mention the probability she will swing between the Dems and Republicans as the wind blows to obtain her way.
If you have friends or relatives in Alaska call and encourage them to stay with Miller.

I’m still concerned that the Democrat will sneak in and win – leaving Alaska with two Democratic senators and almost surely sending our possible Senate majority to perdition.

Not predicting, but a few more manufactured last minute media scandals and corrupt state officials and we could end up with 46-47 seats.

I do believe it. He was the first person I thought of when the whole thing came out about Miller’s employment records from the past.

Think about all the advice he gave about what “he would” do if he were in charge. I remember something he said about taking employees into rooms, and closing the door so no one would hear what he said to the employee, but, I believe he said something about the employees wife or daughters or some such thing. In other words he threatened people. I read much of his own words that he himself posted on Alaska newspaper websites. The man has no shame or conscience. I remember him saying that many of the Alaska state employees were underpaid, and, he made it that way. I’m not so sure that he loves Lisa as much, as he hates Palin. Remember he said that the race was between the Palin people and the Murkowski people. He was so obsessed with his hatred of Palin, and anyone remotely attached to her, that he is capable of anything. I suspect one day that hatred will consume him whole.

And gee, in case you missed it

mbecker908 (Diary) Friday, October 29th at 10:08AM EDT (link)

(not a first BTW) the race is in fact between the Murkowski organization and Palin’s organization. And, as far as “hating” Palin, he donated to her and voted for her after she won the Republican nomination. And, another thing you obviously missed, Art’s so-call “hatred” of Palin consisted of pointing out actual, real facts about the things she did and the way she governed for the short time she was actually in charge.

I counted over fifty people just into the letter D. So that leaves a bunch more people through Z. Please by my guest and count the rest. They are primarily republican or non affiliated. Hopefully these people will not got any votes because Joe does not need the siphoning. Maybe the courts will realize there are too many and say no to handing out the names.

…Kuklis, he was denied as registering too late….Alas….Best way to vote write in is to just spell the name correctly….J-O-E M-I-L-L-E-R.. don’t forget to fill in the little oval next to the name after you write it in!

Very Clever

“Lisa M is a Lackey”. Someone was having a lot of fun. And it guarantees that a write-in of “Lisa M” won’t count. Whoever came up with that one is a hero.

that there are no names that are close to the Princesses.

Well, if they write-in L-I-S-A M...then...

audax (Diary) Friday, October 29th at 10:18AM EDT (link)

….Ms. Lisa M L-A-CK-E-Y can say they were really voting for her! But hey scope I had the very best spelling teacher and she taught me that Lisa was spelled J-O-E and that Polish name was spelled M-I-L-L-E-R-ski…anyway, don’t forget to fill in the little oval after you write it in….

Paul Mirengoff from Powerline

Scope (Diary) Friday, October 29th at 11:22AM EDT (link)

is still dumping on Joe Miller. He has an article today talking about the poll that has Miller last, and is treating it as though it came from God himself. He gets a swipe in on Palin at the end also. He also has PDS. He also has ODS. The article was linked over at the Shrill (Hill) site. I’m not linking it as it doesn’t need any more views. This Paul guy seems to be Karl Rove’s brother from a different mother.

Murkowski Foes Pack Write-In List To Cause ‘Chaos’

ummm…WHO started the chaos? NPR still at it.

Defund NPR, let them tread water like Err America on their own private funding.

Mercowsky campaign gave out and mailed bracelets with her name on them

Scope (Diary) Friday, October 29th at 1:50PM EDT (link)

According to this article, which is a total hit piece on Miller, they stupidy publicly state that the Murky campaign gave out and mailed bracelets with the Senators name on them. A Murky spokesman said- “It’s cold in Alaska and people are going to be wearing jackets” and was hopeful that the bracelets would not be visible.

It is against the law to take anything into the polling place with any candidates name on it. I hope the poll watchers check to make sure these bracelets are not worn on election day.

If this is how damn dumb the Murky people are, it is just another reason she lost the primary. Who would publicly state their intentions to break the law?

My biggest concern is that with all this scheming

civil truth (Diary) Friday, October 29th at 8:11PM EDT (link)

…that a number of voters decide to say a plague of both houses and vote for the Democrat. You can be pretty certain that no Democrat is going to want either Miller or Murkowski, and there are not an insubstantial number of them.

If that happens and the Dem wins, then you’ll see real global warming as the Alaska glaciers melt from the recriminations between the two wings of the AK-GOP.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Does polling adjust for write in candidates?

Common_Cents (Diary) Friday, October 29th at 8:16PM EDT (link)

I’d think there would be plenty of slippage when it comes to a write in candidate. Not sure how polling will translate directly to election results. I’d have to think a write in would do much worse than polls suggest.
