Steve Jobs died today after a long battle with cancer. He was 56. Founding NeXT would have been enough to turn anyone into a cult hero in his field. Acquiring Lucasfilm’s Graphics Group and turning it into Pixar would have made anyone a respected business leader.
But for Steve Jobs, those were feathers in his cap called Apple, the company he co-founded with Steve Wozniak, and then later saved from extinction by returning to lead it again. He led Apple to its point today as the most valuable corporation in America, measured by public market capitalization. To do that, Jobs had to beat Microsoft and he had to beat IBM. He won in the end.
Far from just a visionary, people from Apple have always said he was a hands-on leader, who had a personal stake in the success of the company and of the products he helped create. Apple ][. Macintosh. NextStep. iMac. MacOS X. iPod. iPhone. iPad. Jobs leaves behind an incredible legacy, and his death will be felt by his industry, and the world. RIP.
My focus tonight having been on Steve Jobs, I’m going to run through the rest of my queue of stories more quickly than usual:
Sunlight wishes it had Jobs’s attention to detail. Their Enforcement Actions database is suffering from integer overflow as it mis-reports anything over about 2 billion dollars in fines.
According to Free Press, Prepaid Wireless Internet doesn’t really count as competition because, well, it’s inconvenient to the cause of claiming there is no competition.
Copyright enforcement is out of control. Even as Barack Obama signs ACTA, the treaty that aims to spread the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and more to the rest of the world, In California we are now subject to warrantless copyright raids by the government. Isn’t that special? By the way, Public Knowledge can’t make up its mind. The Soros-funded group opposes ACTA, which only exports laws that already exist in America, but favor actual government expansion at home. Hmm. Typical of OSI-funded initiatives to promote liberty abroad and big government in America.
When Apple censors apps, the outrage is palpable. But when Google censors apps, they get a pass, it seems.
The FCC continues to be an opponent of innovation and freedom in the marketplace as it seeks to put spy, er, GPS chips in all phones by government dictate. There is no legitimate reason for government to demand that. It’s hard to laugh at insane European regulation when the Obama socialists are just as bad as the Brussels socialists.
And yes, the FCC’s run by socialists. That’s why they want to tax your Internet in order to pay for the Internet of others. That’s what “Universal Service Fund reform” has been code for all along, just as I warned.
House Republicans are busy. They passed a bill to reclaim some “broadband” stimulus money, while in committee Greg Walden continues to work on America’s pressing spectrum issues, issues that he won’t be rushed on, as they need to be done right. Republicans are also looking at Government’s role in Internet security. Psst, guys: the answer is ‘none beyond advisory.’
For some information on the LightSquared/GPS dispute from the other side, visit GPS World, which you can tell by its name has a particular focus.
Patent trolls now claim to own WiFi, a threat to small businesses across America. Stop the madness!
Why are Richard Blumenthal, Al Franken, and Sheldon Whitehouse seeking to ban binding arbitration for wireless contracts? Is it because the ABA has been shedding jobs lately and lawyers need more work?

It's a sad day for America
GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 8:54PM EDT (link)Steve Jobs did more to shape this current American culture than anyone else: from the original PC — the Mac — to the iMac to the iPod to the iPhone. Each product became the “kleenex” of its type. The iPod opened the digital music “egg” for all music lovers. The podcast created an entire new way to distribute audio, especially talk.
For years, industry analysts and executives wondered if Apple would ever make a “tablet”. They complained that Apple was avoiding the tablet market. Now, the iPad is the standard of the tablet market. And that’s with only two revisions over the past two years. Those skeptics are have grown to like crow meat.
From Toy Story to Toy Story 2 to you-name-the-Pixar-film; it was the standard for all animated movies. Disney even bought Pixar, which had beaten Disney at its own game. After the purchase of Pixar by Disney, Steve was the largest single owner of Disney stock.
Steve even overcame Pancreatic cancer for much longer than most. I fear that with Obamacare, if you or I get pancreatic cancer, we won’t stand a chance.

What's Apple's Profit Margin?
kowalski (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:14PM EDT (link)If you were looking for a “robber baron” corporation to penalize for “not paying its fair share” I don’t think you could find one better than Apple. Don’t they make like 30-35% before tax and something like 17% post-tax? Why doesn’t Harry Reid want to take some of that back? Doesn’t he think that Apple makes enough at 10% or 5%?

LOL, that is an unfair slight against Jobs
JSobieski (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:32PM EDT (link)Being CEO of Apple is a lot harder than being the lead singer for U2. There are way more decisions to be made, far more complexity to manage, and infinitely more ways to screw things up such that you end up losing money.
I myself don’t own any Apple products. I frankly don’t care for trying to make geekiness cool. I think geekiness is its own form of cool, and I detest the pseudo-geekiness of Apple fans.
That being said, products are always a combination of product attributes and marketing attributes, and everyone here in Michigan wishes that someone like Steve Jobs worked for one of the Big 3.

apple has one of the lowest R&D budgets in the Tech world
sbm1 Thursday, October 6th at 5:08AM EDT (link)Their focus on relatively few products means they get a lto mroe bang for their buck. They don’t have a lot of “google labs” going on. They don’t experiment in vain…they identify the item, and perfect it….
Similar to why German car companies are much more succesful than american car companies. Porsche offers 4 models, it takes you 10 seconds to think of 911, Cayenne, Boxter, Cayman…Mercedes has C, E, S, A, B, R, M and G class, that is it….
GM, excluding vans has 29 model types (15 Chevy, 4 Buick, 5 Cadillac, 5 GMC)
Fact is, that Apple will only be able to maintain high profit levels as long as Samsung, Sony, or Microsoft or no one else comes up with products which press that margin. For me Apple did lose some of its lustre in their taking Samsung to court to block the Galaxy pad….had Gottlieb Daimler tried to claim that all cars were copies of his and taken Henry Ford to patent court, where would we be?
and they shouldn’t be doing charity on the corporate level…pay your employees well, and if they want to give money to charity, they can choose the charities most important to them.

Apple paid all its due state and federal taxes. I do hope, Sobieski, you are not being serious in diss’ing the free market economy.
Please, if you have to put down standard free-market economics, think of all the extra state sales tax that those prices supplied to the non-thrifty states. Plus, that label on every box that says “Engineered in California” has given millions of people worldwide their first impression of California. Jerry Brown should be indebted to Jobs for his state’s reputation.

I've been around since the Apple 0
kowalski (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:20PM EDT (link)And yeah, Steve Jobs is alright, he had an idea about the GUI after visting Xerox PARC, but I think most of his stuff is hype. I wouldn’t have owned an early Apple computer. In fact I wouldn’t have owned most of them, I don’t own an iPad, an iPod, or an iPhone. I think they’re glossy shiny gadgets.
Some of them are OK computers, but I’ve just never really understood the cult of personality.
I don’t like to speak badly of the dead but I just don’t have the reverence for him that a lot of people who are currently making money off his company’s stock seem to, as a person. I’m sad he’s died prematurely of what looks to have been a long and difficult struggle with a very painful disease. But as far as the computers are concerned and the other products? They’ve always reminded me of the Jordache Jeans of consumer electronics.

Well, I will say that Jobs did help
kowalski (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:33PM EDT (link)Jobs did help, in some way or another, to expand the Apple brand beyond the point where you had to be hanging multicolored hankies out of one’s back pocket in order to own one.
But really, Apple owes more to Adobe than anything. It PostScript and all of the Adobe software that really makes a Macintosh what it is. That and the fact that Microsoft is a true “reverse-engineering” competitor in the sense that they engineer their products more *after* they release them than before they do.

Perhaps you are right that Apple is the way to go now, but that was not always the case
kyle8 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 10:19PM EDT (link)For about two decades I avoided Apple and went with PC, not because I liked Microsoft’s infuriating products but because Apple was goddamn expensive, and you could never find software for it until a year after it was available for PC.
Now, some of that has even seeped over to Apples revolutionary pod and pad products. If you can wait a while, if you don’t have to have the very latest thing, you can get a competitor product that is half the cost.
“Nothing works like freedom, Nothing succeeds like liberty”

Yep.
Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 10:29PM EDT (link)I made the move to Apple about 4 years ago, when my disgust with Microsoft and all Things Windows peaked. I haven’t looked back. While Macs remain on the expensive side, I believe the quality of the componentry and the hw/sw integration justifies that cost delta. Most of my co-workers are Windows users and they constantly express envy in my Macbook Air and how fast and easy I do my job, compared to their incessant battles with Windows.
I’m a convert, although I don’t consider myself an Apple cultist. I’m very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Jobs, but I think he’s positioned Apple for success far into the future. So his legacy will live on.

Sure, you can get a competitor’s product, but it’ll be a plastic piece of trash that overheats, has serious “driver” problems, or simply lacks in engineering to polish and integrate.

Jobs' impact is beyond the "computers"
GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:35PM EDT (link)Sobieski, it’s the cultural impact that was important, not the actual computers. Steve invented the digital audio distribution model, bringing music to billions in a new way. And many a musician to listeners’ ears for the first time. MP3 players are here pretty much because of his vision. The phone as a computer is largely due to Steve. Sure, he has others who work for him. But his leadership truly made things happen.
Also, Apple products simply work. I’ve got over 10 macs in my home, and nothing that runs windows. Add 3-4 ipods and an iphone for my wife. Vision and leadership and commitment to quality: it’s what CEO’s get paid for, and Steve was worth every penny.

ihateliberals Thursday, October 6th at 12:45PM EDT (link)Jobs was nothing more than a PT Barnum of computers, “There’s a iFool born every minute” and “An iFool and their money will soon be parted” . Jobs was most likely the best marketer ever. he could sell a Freezer to an Eskimo but he never invented anything. Apple does make good products but the computers themselves a just big paper weights. .If IBM had not made the mistake they did with the microchip and allowed it to be cloned most likely we wouldn’t have nearly the amount of computers in the world as we do now. Apple and their arrogance charge way too much for their products and even back in the beginning not many people could afford computers.
I use to develop software and build computers for companies in the 80′s and 90′s. Apple I could design my software to run on mainframes, min-computers and PC’s. When i would try to convert my software to run on the Mac platform it would cost me almost tripple to write them same software and get it installed as it would for any of the other platforms. The arrogance i encountered trying to work with the people of Apple was intolerable. As a consultant many times i wuol dbe call din to upgrade the Apples in an office with more disk or memory. I could go into a firm and totally convert them from Apple to a PC platform with more powerful PC’s than the cost of upgrading the Apple’s they had.
Jobs was brought back to save Apple and he did but if it had not been for the iProducts Apple would not be the giant it is today. AS better products like the Androids etc get on the market and become cheaper without jobs to continue to market the Apple crap it might just go by the wayside. One can only hope.
