The Rollercoaster goes back down for Herman Cain

Cain Romney

We saw last week that Herman Cain was on his way up before the Politico story, and fell off slightly afterward.

Friday brought us a new poll which reinforces past conclusions. Yes, he really was on the way down last week, despite raising money in the seven figures.

The facts: ABC News/Washington Post poll by Langer Research Associates and Abt-SRBI, 438 leaning Republican RVs, MoE 5.5. Mobile and landline handling.

Mitt Romney leads the poll. In fact, he’s unchanged since the last ABC polls from the beginning of October and the beginning of September. He’s at 25 to Cain’s 23 (up 6 from a month ago). Two other candidates in double figures: Rick Perry at 14 (down 3), Newt Gingrich at 12 (up 3).

So all the trends in this poll are about where we expect them to be at this point. Mitt Romney has his core that he’s held onto, but that core isn’t growing. At this point, has Romney won over as a first choice every Republican he’s going to win over?

Cain at 23 though has his lowest reading in a national poll in about a month. Now it’s possible this particular poll is understating Cain’s performance, for Cain to be so much lower than he is in the other polls, while Perry is markedly higher than he’s been in about a month. It’s also possible some minds have changed.

I continue to conclude that based on last week, Cain needs this story to be over. And he seems to agree, given his recent statements to the effect of “End of story. Back on message.” But like a scientist constantly calling for more research, I eagerly await more polling.

    He is not dropping out.
No one will until at least after Iowa.
That will be the measuring stick worth looking at.

None of this scandal business will make it through holidays.
In another week or two people’s attention span will go dormant at least until after New Years.

In other news I just got an e-mail from streiff.
Gloria Allred is to have a press conference to present another Cain accuser and streiff is hosting a party for it.
He said not to bother bringing any cheese as he has plenty.

  • tngal

At least you didn’t go with the online Ipsis poll.I don’t know what to make of onlines. But I was ready. If you did I would have had to comeback with two great straw polls this weekend in SD and FL, and they are about as reliable. :)

Ps. what do you know of Insider Advantage? I could see why they would want to survey so they can target ad buys for clients but are they reliable. They surveyed last thursday. Not that it matters. After Allred has her dog and pony show this afternoon, we should know if support is firm or if it will crater.

I stick to polls with a basis in statistics, using random sampling of the electorate.

We can support whomever. We can work our butts off for whomever. We can do what ever for whom ver. But the simple fact remains that independents have already bought off on the the idea that Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee. And no one, and no amount of money, is going to change that fact.

I don’t support Romney as I think he’s a flip-flopping SOB that will say or do anything to get into the White House. But that level of amoral character is something I will now use to my advantage — i.e. he can say he’s a small government, pro-life conservative and I –and about 2 million Tea Party supporters will hold him to it. Or he, too, will be a one term president.

But bottom line, before even a single vote has been cast, he’s our nominee. Play the game, if you will, but this is what’s going to come out of S.C.. Call the game as you will, but this becomes more clear on a daily basis. Whether we can rally around this RINO whom we hope has had a change of heart is all this debate is about .

That’s reality folks. Ronald Reagan didn’t show up for this electioion, and we need to get out heads aroun that fact. And if you’ve looked at my postes, you’ll see that this is not at all whatI wanted to see.

    You have two options.

You can provide evidence that streiff emailed you, or you can retract and apologize to streiff. And no “sorry for if you were offended” nonsense. An apology for lying about him.

I prefer predestination, because I don’t know what’s in store. Which means that what I do may affect the outcome.

The logical outcome of your fatalism is that you should go ahead and enjoy yourself elsewhere because what you say and do politically won’t matter anyway. If we want to “waste our time” – that’s our business.

  • septembergurl

He is in double digits everywhere. Really remarkable and accomplished by his focus on substance. How I would love to see him as our VP debating Slow Joe.

Even more interesting is Rasmussen’s head to head with Obama, just released today. Previously Net had the worst numbers vs Obama, something like a 20+ point gap. Today, it’s Obama 44, Newt 38. Just 6 points back.

That puts Newt in my top tier, with Romney, Perry, Huntsman and Cain.

It’s obvious that Perry is also recovering support, though slowly. I think he has benefitted from the bye weeks with no debates. Saddle up, Rick! There’s a debate this week. please go in with a strategy you are able to execute!

Just ask President Ron Paul or Republican nominee Sarah Palin about their quality.

  • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil truth

Newt’s main plus is his debate performance. But if he keeps rising, the media eventually will turn their guns on him. At that time we’ll see if he’s done his homework as to how to handle his past record – because we know what they’re going to fire against him. And hopefully he’s prepared if there’s stuff that the public hasn’t seen before. He’s got no excuse to be caught unprepared.

  • usedtobelib

(today it’s that ambulance chaser Gloria Allred) keeps Obama in the background. Job numbers, the mess all the states are dealing with concerning Medicare, Medicaid/Obamacare, Nancy Pelosi’s recent inane statements, the pipeline through Canada….all these things are kept off the front page by the Cain stuff. This for a candidate who seems to be skirting some truths, too.

To me what the polls show in general is a 4 person race.
    Romney, Cain, Perry and Newt

Cain looks like he is going down slowly, not too surprising.
It looks like Perry and Newt are gaining from Cain.

In the end -if things don’t clear up soon for Cain it will be a 3 person race with Romney, Perry and Newt.

Iowa will then bring it more to a 2 person race, most likely Romney and Perry :-) .

  • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

that we are reaping the whirlwind from our failure to fix this nomination process, With many of the early primaries being open primaries then the independents get to pick our nominee for us.

Last time it was McCain. McCain at NO TIME ever got a majority of Republicans behind him, then all of a sudden he was the guy.

We ought to be happy this time that it is Romney, There is no way to be sure, but I feel he would be better than McCain, at least a better campaigner.

  • wennejunk

That may be the outcome in the end, but nothing is determined at this point.

Most of the country, independents included, are are barely paying attention.

They are forming impressions, some are listening to their neighbors, some of whom (perhaps lie you) are influencing them with the inevitability story.

Nothing is inevitable in this race.

  • NeoKong

    streiff never e-mailed.
There is no Herman Cain bashing party.

I apologize to my good friend streiff.
It’s just that I figured streiff wouldn’t mind if I was short on hard facts.

I apologize to you too Neil.

Which is funny because he loves to dish out threats and insults. He just can’t take it when someone treats him the same way he treats others.

And I love how he runs to Neil and others with “they’re picking on me again” the first time someone takes one of his quotes out of context.

That is classic bully behavior. All tough guy until someone squares up to him.

I thought you were saying that we just surrender to the inevitable and learn to “love Big Brother”.

But it now seems like you’re advising us to look to ways to turn lemons into lemonade. If so, then we’re on the same page in terms of taking a more strategic approach.

I agree that with the mounting body count of Romney opponents, that a Romney’s nomination by default is looking increasingly likely. (The Chicago way meets Republican primary 2012). That means we will need to start scenario planning now about 2014 and 2016 in the context of “with friends [in the White House] like this, who needs enemies”.

And keep strengthening our farm team – promising conservatives at the state level.

Zero chance Gingrich gets the nomination. He essentially made a campaign commercial for anyone who would run against him.

  • jackdaniels11

You can call it a “4-person race” or a “9-person race”.

Intrade is where people go when they want to put their money where their hunches are. According to Intrade, it has been a one-person race since the Perry train imploded.

Cain never really threatened Romney’s position as the front-runner.

Polls don’t do what people presume that polls do. Polls do not predict the future. They only tell you what people think who have time to talk to a pollster on the phone. Online polls are even worse because they get “freep’d”, “smurfed”, or whatever you want to call it.

If you want to know which football team is most likely to win next year’s superbowl, you don’t call 1000 likely superbowl viewers and ask them which team they think will win. You go to a website that has the odds of winning, especially if this is a website that actually will take your bet.

It confuses me that so many posters here think that guys like Cain, Gingrich, and/or Perry have a real shot at getting nominated.

I’d love to get them to place a wager on their beliefs. They talk a great game but they’d rather write about their candidate than bet on him.

  • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil truth

I certainly have no intention of slacking on trying to stop Mr. Romney from the nomination. We still fight until mathematical impossibility.

But at the same time, better to start contingency planning now than to scramble later. 2012 is a major test, but not the end of the game (except that an Obama victory may mean crossing the event horizon, especially if the Democrats also keep the Senate and regain the House).

  • tailfins1959

If Perry is able to “cram” for the nomination, Cain has given him a breather as well as Newt might serve that purpose. We may have to settle for Romney, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t at least make an effort. Longshots do win on occasion. We need to take on ex-Congressman Mel Hancock’s (of Missouri’s Hancock Amendment fame) mindset and “just do it” because it’s the right thing to do regardless of the odds of winning.

  • izoneguy

Is Herman going to come out and say it is a case of he said – she said…..???

  • onemovoter

His daughter came out recently to set the record strait about the divorce papers and his ex in the hospital with “cancer”.

She said she was there the entire time and put everything in a time frame that completely changed the original story. I was happy to read about it and know it’s something that really hurt Newt’s credibility with a good chunk of people.

I know that wasn’t the biggest thing, because sitting on the couch with Petlosi (yes my nickname) I think put the biggest nail on Newt. Also early this year he had many negative miss steps. Like I’ve said before, most people have short memories of about a month or two.

I think people’s short memory will work for Perry since it’s still another 2 months to go. Perry’s best bet is to go positive or at least just say he’d like to invite people to compare the ideas he’s presented with others. Perry has to get his positives up to get his overall polling up.

  • tailfins1959

We actually vote in elections, whereas viewers participation in the Super Bowl is limited to just watching.

If Romney were the juggernaut his supporters pretend him to be, he’d be able to get more than 25% support. Fact is, he’s just the candidate of choice for northeastern and beltway liberal republicans, and southern and western republicans have little or no affinity for him whatsoever.

Romney might be the favorite, but it’s only slight, and if one distinct conservative candidate emerges, Romney is toast. His only hope is to keep a number of conservatives in the fight for as long as possible to split up the conservative vote.

If four women are blowing the same kind of smoke, gang, there’s gotta be a fire somewhere.

Did Clinton actually tell Paula Jones to “kiss it”? I don’t know. I wouldn’t be willing to bet my entire life savings on it. But her story has added credibility when you consider it in the context of the below allegations.

Did Clinton rape Juanita Bennett? Probably, yes. Either that or she’s the best liar I’ve ever seen.

Did Clinton forcibly grope Kathleen Wiley? Probably, yes. He never denied that he did. His response to the allegation was, “The Oval Office has no curtains.” Thanks, Slick Willie. The question was, “Did you forcibly grope her and then intimidate her to keep her from coming forward about it?”

Did Clinton rape Elizabeth Ward Grayson in the back of a limo? Elizabeth’s friend, Judy Stokes says that he did and that Elizabeth herself told her this.

Did Clinton rape Hillary while on vacation in Bermuda in 1979? Edward Klein, a former editor for the New York Times Magazine, says that he did on at least one occasion and that he bragged about it to his friends. My source for this is “The Truth About Hillary” by Ed Klein.

Did Clinton ruin Monica Lewinsky’s and Linda Tripp’s lives? Yes.

Did he falsely smear Ken Starr, Matt Drudge, Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston, Henry Hyde and everyone else who either opposed his liberal agenda and/or did their constitutional duty to defend the U.S. Constitution from all enemies? Yes.

I am not saying that all of the rape/sexual battery allegations are true. But even if one of them is true, Bill Clinton was simply the worst individual that we ever elected as president. He should be registering once a year as a sex offender so that officials can keep track of his whereabouts in case any young women go missing.

Is this a threadjack? No. Here’s the tie-in: we can’t put our stamp of approval on a guy with this much baggage. I understand that people here hate Romney for both conscious and subconscious reasons but Herm Cain represents the depth to which people here will stoop to avoid an obvious conclusion: Mitt Romney is the only Republican who can beat Obama.

When you compare Romney and Cain side-by-side, there is a clear winner. Cain owes a lot of his success to the same kinds of programs that got an unqualified Barack Obama into Columbia University and later Harvard Law School.

Romney’s background is a testament to the man’s competence. We don’t have women coming forward to accuse Romney of luring them into a hotel room for an inappropriate encounter or getting them to sign an NDA and then having Romney tell half-truths about what happened on TV while denying his victim the opportunity to tell her side of the story.

    Cain is pathetic.

I doubt this woman is going to do much to discourage current people who support Cain to abandon him. The kind of people who admire or even at the very least take Allred seriously are not exactly the demographic that would vote for Cain anyway.

After seeing the Cain-Gingrich debate and looking at new Iowa polling data, I’m becoming increasingly more convinced that this is a Romney-Cain-Gingrich race, and the others are pretty much out of the running.

  • red_oakster

which means he has little chance in Iowa. And there’s no path to the nomination without a good finish in Iowa. Gingrich might have won the nomination in 1996 when he would have been the conservative movement’s alternative to Bob Dole. But Gingrich was busy having an extramarital affair at the time. Today, there’s no reason to expect that he can get past the gadfly threshold.

I watched the presser also. The accuser seems to be a credible person, and a registered Republican. I loved the way Allred, in her speech, called Cain’s actions against Sharn Bialek his own version of his “stimulus package.” We shall see if her credibility holds up under the media spotlight, which will be an exhaustive search.

When she described what he did to her, a lawyer analyzing the statements said that if true what he did was sexual abuse, not harassment. She said that she asked Cain what he was doing, and his reply was- “You want a job don’t you.”

Before the presser was over, the Cain campaign had already addressed the Allred presser, and of course took their own shot at Allred as a celebrity lawyer, which she is. Now it’s Allred’s fault for his woes.

currently in the race needs to be reduced so we can start to see a real challenger to Romney emerge and yes I do not consider Romney a conservative.

Let’s say it comes down to Romney and one other, Romney consistently gets about 25% of the vote which leaves 75% for the other candidate but obviously he is going to peel away some from the other dropouts. Even if Romney takes 30% of the remaining 75% that’s only 22.5% meaning Romney gets 47.5% total. My concern is everyone stays in the race for the long haul and splits the vote and we end up with Romney.

accusers stayed quiet and did not give interviews until today is that they are all, like Sharon Bialek, white?(or at least not african-American?)

I figured this out last week, when there were no photos of the women, although two of them work in the DC area and the NY Slimes had staked out one their homes. And then quietly unstaked. No perp walk video, no high school yearbook photos, no pictures of them although they are midlevel professionals working in pr. After Friday they were free to speak after the NRA lifted the confientiality.

Nothing. The media suddnely backed off and got all respectful of the women’s privacy. Right. It’s entirely possible that when Politico started researching the story they figured an Anita Hill situation. As they got deeper they found out the accusers are all white. Uh-Oh. Not sure we want to pursue this! But it’s too late to stop so they simply stop investigating and reporting.

I go to the other sites and in the last 15 mintues have been to about 6 of them. The hot airs, and politicos, etc. I get away from the ususal posters here and read what others are posting elsewhere. I am seeing a lot still supporting Cain.

I have found a few guys saying they’d “tap her”, quite a few claiming she’s not that attractive and number of men and women discounting the whole thing because, as I said. No sex. She said stop he took her home. He made a play and got rebuffed.

And of course a lot are skeptical because of the Allred angle. She is not altruistic. She’s helping someone, or hopes to get numbers for her dismal tv show. Van Sustern she ain’t.

Curious, why didn’t she jump out of the car and run? Why didn’t she slap the thin dribblin snot out of him? Why are all vicitms coming to light from the 90′s. How come we’re not seeing any from say 2006. And while I am not saying the story is completely untrue..I ask myself. why did she go to the office in his car. She said she lost her job. Needed some career advice. She could have just asked for an address to the office bldg and took a cab.

Right now herman Cain’s biggest problem might be Mrs. Cain. I’ll let them sort it out.

And if everyone is so intent on peeking in people’s closets from ten-15 years ago, here’s a tip..stay out of mine. Skeletons and dirty laundry are probably the nicest things you’ll find. The rest would scare the sh*t out of you.

If Romney wins Iowa, the race is over and that 25% glass ceiling will suddenly go a lot higher. If Cain wins, he could consolidate part of Newt’s supporters and make a race of it. With his baggage, I’m not sure Newt could ever pull off Iowa, unless all these Cain allegations won’t go away and Cain deserters mostly settle with Newt.

Speaking of which, if Cain is innocent and wants to put these allegations to rest for good, I think he or she should submit to a polygraph. If he is lying, he needs to quit the race STAT.

I?m not in love with any of these candidates. If not for his baggage, I would probably go with Newt. I?m not particularly sure 2012 is going to be a year that voters are going to be overly concerned with Newt?s 3 weddings and any affair(s), however, let?s not forget that Obama once got an opponent?s divorce files unsealed. He is desperate and will stop at nothing to hold onto power. Otherwise, I like the way Newt is calling out Obama for what he is ? an incompetent, radical president.

On the other hand, Romney is from MA, so you know he?s been vetted. If the best attacks they can muster up are that he doesn?t have a ?core?, I think Team Obama is pretty much screwed.

On the third hand, unless we get a Senate with 66 Jim DeMint?s and House full of Joe Walsh?s, I think you can tag the toe of the USA no matter who we elect this cycle. The die has been cast. The full system meltdown may not happen in our lifetimes, but happen it will. Just hope you or your children live in the middle of a cluster of red states so that the new, smaller union can write a new socialist-proof Constitution.

can lead to all sorts of logical impossibilities, read the novel, “Catch-22″ by Joseph Heller.

The rules said that you can get sent back to the U.S. if you are too insane to complete the required number of missions. Yet the doctors labeled everyone as “sane” if they complained to the doctor that they were insane. Wikipedia explains the wisdom of Catch-22 in its wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22

Here is the pertinent excerpt: “There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he were sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.” (p. 46, ch. 5)

For an example of well-intentioned animals trying to create a democracy while trying to maintain the inapplicability of the elite to their own rules, read George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, which is a fable explaining the seeds of doom planted in Russian Revolution (and to a degree, Mao Tse-Tung’s revolution) but I suppose its lessons could be applied to any organization that tries to protect the power of an elite group of “organizers” while capturing the energy of a large mass of individuals.

I sympathize with you, though. I was once on a school committee that had instructions from the faculty that absolutely no hierarchy or patriarchical system could be used in the planning or execution of a week-long event. Try getting someone else to do something when everyone is considered an equal. It usually results in anarchy or in a hierarchy that just doesn’t call itself a hierarchy.

I worked in mental health for many years and denial is a real thing.

I so much wanted to give Cain the benefit of the doubt, but with each new allegation, Cain’s style of defending himself–as well as the cast of supporting characters who stubbornly defend him–are falling into classic patterns of behavior associated with someone in deep denial.

One of the reasons we see this pattern over and over whereby men in powerful positions test the limits of their invincibility is because a person who wants to continue in denial must surround themselves with enablers who help them believe their lies about themselves. Everyone who plays the game does so because there is so much to lose if they don’t play the game. (Including Cain’s wife).

Basically I reject Cain on the merits. I do however believe these allegations cut directly to a serious question of character, how a person treats his wife and family is a great indicator of a persons values. How seriously a person takes their marriage can also be an indicator as to how seriously they take other oaths, such as those to uphold and defend the constitution. I don’t know that Cain did or didn’t do anything wrong, I do think the question is fair in light of the circumstances.

People are going to get sick of hearing about Cain and his sex scandals when they really want to focus on the issues and the candidates.

For better or for worse, it comes down to his-word-her-word and in the end it doesn’t matter as he isn’t electable.

It make take awhile but I do have hope in most fellow citizens that they will see the light and realize Cain isn’t Presidential material, period.

The TEAM from Chicago has set up the playing field. Cain will fight the “drip….drip” for the next year. If this one doesn’t do it, they’ll trot out another one. He’s done. Stick a fork in him.

Republicans are dealing with the smartest people in Applied Political Science the world has ever seen, and yes, they’re smarter than you. They’re better politicians than you. And they’re more ruthless than you. I learned that when I lived there. Today proves it conclusively.

Cain’s campaign is going to be from this moment forward a hopeless attempt to combat a never-ending cavalcade of new allegations against him that will last until after he takes office, even if he should survive the Primary.

I don’t think they have anything they can use to counter this, and it doesn’t matter whether the whole thing is a complete fabrication. They’ll settle it for several million dollars a few years from now out of court. The fact is that they’ve won this round. Cain is finished. The “air went out of Cain’s” balloon with a huge pop this afternoon.

Nobody has ever successfully fought these kinds of streams of allegations. It’s a Jack Ryan all over again and what’s worse is that it doesn’t even *matter* this time whether the allegations are true.

If we knew all we knew about Vain, but he was gonna be the leader of North Korea, the entire world body would be on edge, because everybody would be like this guy has no experience, is very temperate, and does not have a firm grasp on what his rivals are doing, can there really be that many people who after watching the disaster called Obama really believe Cain is the right choice. In what has he done that makes people feel he is qualified, I cannot think of one thing. we would like our leaders to have experience, know where they stand, and have a record of fighting for what they beloved it. Cain has not done a good job at any of these. To even consider Vain over Perry is just so 2008, I thought as conservative we would not fall for the American idol stuff, there was a reason when he was thinking about running the crowed was chanting, run, Rick, run. In any high office or close to any high office (and the law school I used to work for graduated both The Former Mayor of Chicago and the CEO of McDonald’s Corp.) you know that the reason everyone there seems so heavy is that everyone is always looking over their shoulder.

The city is 10,000 times heavier than anyplace else. It needs broad shoulders because it’s so crushingly heavy. That weight has come down on Herman Cain today and he is not going to be able to support it. His campaign is finished. Continuing to fight the war will only lead to a more humiliating and even more destructive final humiliation. That’s how Chicago works.

This woman from Chicago as a blonde, white, “registered Republican” is the most brilliant single piece of work that I’ve ever seen by a political campaign. Cain has always been the weakest candidate due to his lack of any elected experience plus all his gaffes. Now this sex scandal makes it even worse.

If he delivers the cuts required, it’s going to mean significant reduction of the federal workforce and a drastic restructuring of Medicare and Medicaid (not to mention genuine common sense health care reforms for everyone after repealing ObamaCare). There will be pain.

It is highly unlikely that the pit we are in can be surmounted in four years. It was deep enough when Bush failed to block Pelosi and Reid’s spending; Obama has made it so deep we’ll be lucky to ever get out, and only after great effort and sacrifice. There’s not going to be much in the way of real recovery except for pent-up demand, but even that isn’t inexhaustible when unemployment remains high.

If the next President fails to take these necessary but probably very unpopular actions, the situation will continue to deteriorate and get worse.

Either way, look for Hillary or Bayh in 2016. We may be able to hold the Congress and, if the Republican Prez has done well, divided government won’t be too bad for four years.

A lot of the enthusiasm and intensity on the right has been riding behind Cain. Valid or not, that’s how it has been. If he just drops out, we stand to lose that intensity…which we can count on it as sure as we’re breathing that the left knows full well.

*(blank look)* Newt, you go first….. from the Newt/Cain debate.

I was watching the twitter feed during that debate and several noticed that the applause for Cain was tepid in response to what Newt was getting. They also noted this was actually a very supportive Cain crowd to boot.

A few other comments jumped out at me in reference to Cain. They said that this debate format shows that once he has to actually get past the 30 second statements and actually discuss details, he falls very flat, and people get to see a lack of depth of knowledge. Of course it was interesting to keep hearing from both Cain and Newt, terms and ideas already espoused by Perry for quite some time.

I watched Hannity’s interview of Perry, and towards the end Perry made a very astute observation. He said that Obama may have intelligent people around him, but they aren’t very wise. As a leader you have to have knowledge and wisdom to pick the right people to do the things that need to be done correctly. Otherwise you get what we have now in the White House.

It’s just a mastery of the task. It’s a highly developed art form at this point.

My Dad is an old-school guy who thinks that people still have thick skins and I’ve had to warn him on so many occasions that he has to be extremely, extremely careful of what he says and what he jokes about with people, particularly women.

He’s got an abundant and effusive sense of humor and he makes jokes and off the cuff comments that could *easily* have resulted in a sexual harassment lawsuit in the past ten years. He’s hated me for having to criticize his sense of humor. He has never meant any harm to anyone.

But *nobody* who arrived after approximately 1990 has a sense of humor in anything, most particularly in terms of sex. I’ve had to warn him at least a half a dozen times, and compared to the things Cain is alleged to have done, his stuff is TAME.

And Cain is a Conservative Republican and he’s BLACK on top of that. So it basically doesn’t even matter what he meant when he said whatever he said. He’s finished. There’s no countering this. It’s his word against her word and for the rest of time immemorial it will be that and his campaign is finished, and if it isn’t finished there will be nothing but a stream of stories.

Now that the story has broken there is no way to prove the negative.

But this can only be done ONCE. This gun can only be fired a single time. This time it got Cain.

As the male secretary for a female law school Dean, I came back to help my Dad with his business and I had to SCHOOL him:

“Do not EVER send jokes in email that can even be remotely construed as sexually suggestive. And keep your jokes to yourself when you meet with people in person. You are living in a world circa 1965 when people weren’t at each other’s throats about everything and had a sense of humor. You have absolutely no idea what you’re getting yourself into particularly if the recipient is a woman you work with. You will die, die, die with your head on a pike one day and people will dance around you for Sexual Social Justice.”

Herman Cain isn’t a lawyer, he’s a businessman – a very successful businessman – and I have every reason to believe he’s a guy a lot like my father, who probably made a couple of jokes in the past 20 years that some people found offensive. Now that he’s running for President he is learning just how interesting the real world of law in the United States is. It’s a minefield of people with no sense of humor at all.

He’s being killed right in front of us all. And the worst thing is that there isn’t anything we can do about it right now.

Is that if you put all these people in a room together and gave them 12 hours to work it out, and forced them to work it out, and say sorry to each other, etc., none of this would have ever made a headline.

We’re wasting not just our time destroying people’s lives and careers we’re wasting the whole country’s. It’s political class high drama. For those of us not living in the political class, most of us would just as soon they dropped it.

Who is going to lead the Key Club? Who is going to be the Valedictorian? Who is going to be Most Likely To Succeed?

It’s the same story in high politics that it is in all of the high schools in this country except these are the people who make the laws and control our nuclear weapons and *decide our lives*. There’s nothing more important about it than that, it’s the same exact phenomenon. It’s all about who is going to be allowed to be a member of the Club.

The smaller the Club gets, the more arcane the rules become. Legal academia is a very small club and the rules are so arcane almost nobody can understand them. But once you’re in the Club, you practically have to kill someone to get kicked out. Herman Cain is not being allowed into the Club. The New Yorker is going to explain his erstwhile campaign in a piece of more than 15,000 words and it will make perfect sense in retrospect. He just wasn’t their kind of Black man.

    1. White women in peril – yes, they get more & more sympathetic coverage.
White women accusing black man of sexual assault — not so much.

    2. Why do you think we had no pictures or video of the two women who got settlements? The media knows who they are. We had pictures of Gary Hart’s bimbo in days — and that was before the internets. We had a picture of Mark Sandford’s squeeze in 24 hours, and she was in Chile or Argentina. My point — you get the visual very quickly usually. Jon Martin was asked Sunday why there were no specific details and he answered “These are sensitive sources.” Why?

    3. What’s going to happen: Bennett (lawyer for the first woman, the one Herb cops to) says that the story from Sharon Bialek is very similar to the one his client has told. She will go public soon, as ill the other women. They will all be white. Their stories will be similar.

    4. You would like it to be a media assault on Herb. It’s not. In days to come we will find out how & why the media decided to bury the story.

lame, lacking staff, etc. Cain cannot have thought he would go the distance.

Recall that he ran for President in 2000, but dropped out early. It was said to be lack of funding, but now I wonder — perhaps someone warned him against running, given the sex charges against him just a few years earlier. Herb then regrouped, built a new career as a motivational speaker , talk show screamer and opinion writer. He enjoyed success (tho losing the Senate) and was encouraged to run for President.

But what happened at the NRA?

Obviously, after a lifetime of hard and dedicated work in government and the private sector, when Herb was appointed CEO of the NRA he experienced some kind of midlife crisis. Now, the NRA is a professional trade association, such as proliferate in DC — professional trade groups that lobby for their industry.

(Yes, Iowa voters, in your genius, you have picked a lobbyist as your
    “Outside Washington outsider guy”)

Oftentimes, these lobbyists use alcohol, attractive people, expensive restaurants, resorts , etc, to persuade members of Congress and others to vote for or support legislation that affects their industry. I can only imagine that is even more the case in the Restaurant Association lobby.

So, Herb was in the middle of all this, he had a love nest, er, apartment that he was given by the association and to which he brought at least one woman who woke up later in his bed.

After a few years the NRA canned Herb, then settled with the most troublesome women. Because of the race angle, Herb would probably have gotten away with it had he not sought higher office.

Now, we have to deal with the fact that he has dealt a blow to our primary that may be fatal. That is, he might have re-elected Obama.

I didn’t get to see it on Fox but it’s being put out on Twitter.

Ace from AceofSpadesHQ is really coming down on Cain. Ace has been an equal opportunity basher when it comes to candidates, so I know with all of what’s coming out, it’s going to be real tough on Cain. This is now a full court press on Cain.

Some say Newt might be the next to pick up those that are dropping from Cain. The news outlets will then savage Newt again just like with Cain. This is why people should do their research on the candidates and know who is the best candidate for them. As you can see, it’s just a pack mentality following the least hardest hit candidate that might have a chance and isn’t Romney. I hope that they will wise up and finally see that Perry is really the closest to a majority of voters for the GOP race.

Cain has not been my first choice, but definitely my second. I have met him, heard him speak and been a fan, and a fellow Georgian. Cain is toast as far as I’m concerned. I resisted Politico’s hit job and watched as they put the full court press on him. I don’t care for faceless, nameless accusers – if you want to accuse then have the courage to do so face first. Although, I recognize these women did not come forward – Politico pushed this forward. That said, a person accused multiple times of sexual harassment is a relevant story and despite what the libs may say – personal character matters. Serial sexual harassment is not the kind of character I am looking for in our candidate. I also watched and supported Herman as his campaign bungled the response for days. But todays accuser and Cain’s response throughout have made up my mind. The woman seems credible and her account does as well. In addition and as importantly, is Cain’s response throughout. I have given them margin as his campaign has been inaccurate and lame in their response but it is Cain’s response and behavior that trouble. There is an arrogant – you can’t touch me – dimension to Cain’s response that I find very offputting. Confidence is one thing, but arrogance is different. It also indicates to me that Cain may well be guilty of being another wealthy man with a sense of entitlement and lack of morals who feels that the can do things his way. Well,
for me I don’t care if he comes up with a 0 – 0 – 0 plan – that’s how much chance he has of getting my vote. I’m sorry to say – I liked Herman – then – not now.

It takes an open mind to come to that level of discernment that’s plenty evident in your insightful piece.

I have a favorite candidate too, and my posts thus far have made no secret of who that person is (he wears cowboy boots and eats a lot of burgers whilst campaigning).

That said, I should hope that a crisis like this would not prevent me from similarly setting aside ideology/preference in order to face hard questions about the candidate, had it been him.

Like yourself, I am not comfortable with how Cain has handled the allegations thus far. This isn’t to say that I believe he is culpable. We simply don’t know yet, and may never know for sure.

Your astute behavioral assessment, however, paints a textbook picture of one’s sense of empowerment reaching pathological proportions and in turn creating a self-contained, self-sustaining reality of its own.

We see this in dysfunctional families whose only source of cohesion is sadly the perpetuation of a family myth or “secret,” even with the benefit of clear evidence to the contrary.

We even see this in violent relationships wherein both the victim and the perpetrator help sustain an interpersonal dynamic (cycle) that feeds on itself by a combination of denial and an ever divergent power differential whose asymmetry is axiomatically accepted by both parties.

It’s a creepy thing when paradigms become so large that they block out the last bit of light shed by reality.

I myself advocate reality-based, conscious living . . . but, admittedly, fall short of that ideal more often that I would care to even speculate!

the sooner he gets out, the sooner the American People can choose another candidate and transfer their allegiance. Much like Sarah Palin — many needed to know she was out before they could aggressively support another candidate. The sooner that happens, the more likely it is that that candidate defeats Romney. The longer it takes, the more likely that Romney is the nominee.

personally, I feel that the longer Herman sticks around, the harder he makes this on all conservatives.

to be clear, I don’t have an opinion about the allegations, other than that four separate cases is not good. my beef with Herman is that first of all his spokesman said a big nothing, then he denied, then his campaign director blamed the Perry campaign, then someone else. then there were other allegations. I know that he probably was bound by confidentiality agreements, so fine. why not take 3-4 days and issue a statement when all the ramifications have been researched. instead what might be a nothing burger of a story has turned into a monster. I would think that someone running for president would have a better plan in place

that let a “false” accusation destroy both himself and seriously damage the standing of the party. Seth you don’t know Cain is innocent and frankly Cain isn’t helping himself. Lashing out at everyone while you scream at the wind isn’t making your case any stronger. Get a grip, do you really think dredging up Reagan and W is somehow going to make everyone stop considering the information comming out daily. Is this really supposed to make us join you in closing our eyes and chanting “Cain is the best, Cain is the best”. Your self worth shouldn’t be tied to a politician’s success and make no mistake Cain is a politician. Take break go for a jog clear your head, the sun will come up tomorrow even if Cain isn’t the nominee.

Sorry ya’ll that d@mn cricket was driving me nuts….

there is a bit of room for levity, here, isn’t there?

    the rest of them.

The Founders would look at today’s political reality and shudder in disgust. They envisioned a country where a man’s peers judged him to be the best person for the job, any political job–local or national– and sort of “draft” him into it. He would “serve” one or two terms and then go home to his farm or business having sacrificed, usually reluctantly, to do his “duty”. The Founders would have viewed anyone actively “running for office” as proof of being unqualified for the job. How far we have fallen.

  • davesinsanantonio

the traditional media refuse to do their job. Instead they are following their own political ambitions (creating and supporting that “sitter”). Obummer has his own sexual skeletons in his closet, and the media refuse to do due diligence. That, of course, is not to mention their failure to do due diligence on his campaign finances, his crony business dealings, his failed foreign policies, his attacks on real jobs and real job creators in America, his phony environmentalism, etc. etc.

Thankfully there are new forms of media to get some of the information to the voters. Hopefully they will read and heed.

His name is Herman. The shortened version would be Herm, not Herb. Herb is short for Herbert, and Humphrey has been deceased for decades.

See, now you’ve got me doing it!!!

In a few national polls reported today of republicans Cain is tied with Romney at 21% one Quinnipiac has Cain ahead nationally 30% Romney 21%. Now if we talk about Iowa the latest polls are even worst…for Romney, he’s behind Cain in several polls 30% Cain, 21% Romney, Gingrich 12% rounding out the top three. Their have been some calling polls “scientific”, would that be like the “science” behind global warming or ebonics. Because we know now, that not one of these “scientific” polls predicted the results of the 2010 midterm elections, weren’t even close.

  • msjallen

the Demos were running scared to have another black man run against 0 so THEY have to try to eliminate Cain.
I have read through most of the post here and can’t believe the pettiness among so called conservatives. No wonder the GOP has such a poor showing to the American public.

Cain is inept! He knew these accustions were coming and he did nothing to defend himself. This affirmative action star thought he was ‘untouchable’ His entire camapaign is a disorganized jumble of cliches and boring slogans.

  • spelunker

When the current republican candidates are all assembled, N.Gingrich is the smartest one in the room and he has more expereience than all of them combined. His martial problems bare little relationship to the dire economic and political straights we find ourselves in today. We need someone in the WH who can begin to unravel them. Gingrich and Romney top the list of those with the necessary experience and toughness to get things done. Cain is inept, Bachmann is too inexperienced, Perry has kinda lost his way, The others are just tokens.

  • spelunker

    H. Cain is an opportunist who wanted to vault his affirmative action stardom into the WH. He thought his race and appointed poistion on the Fed Bank Board in Kansas City would give him a teflon coat that he could used to fend off negatives. His cliches have worn thin and he has not been able to articuate his own programs, like taxes. You don’t use hush money and sealed documents when you have done nothing wrong.

  • jakeofalltrades

I used to be a Cain supporter. If these people think I’m going back now, then they’re exactly as crazy as they act.

  • ihateliberals

Conservatives need to get out and vote for their conservative choice now. keep them in the running and as each one gains more then we should shift support to them. The three stooges need to go. Romney (Moe) , Perry (Larry) and Cain (Curly). If any of these three get the nomination i dont ‘ care what Rush or any of the other Radio talking head s say Obama wil be our president for God knows how long. The next big action the Demoncrats are going to try is to repeal the 22 nd amendment and they wil be able to control their puppet. Bill clinton wants to be President again. We didn’t want him in the first place.

  • LibertyWins

Cain is toast get over it and move on already!

He did you a favor by destroying his political career.

  • LibertyWins

    Awesome!

  • LibertyWins

was the first of many things that I found Cain to be irrelevant.

Thank Herb for wasting October for us all!
