Tech at Night: Eric Cantor: SOPA’s dead.

Tech at Night

SOPA is dead in the House, says Majority Leader Eric Cantor, until there is consensus. Since there’s never going to be consensus on Internet censorship, Cantor seems to be saying the issue’s dead in this Congress.

The President went mushy on SOPA, Harry Reid and Senate Democrats decided to push forward, but Eric Cantor, Darrell Issa, and House Republicans want to kill the bill. That’s a clear, bright line, folks.

Turns out primary threats matter more than vague protests.

Hey, if Rupert Murdoch wants to hold Google accountable for every search result, then let’s come after Rupert Murdoch for every classified ad ever run in any of his newspapers, eh? Have any ‘pirates’ ever advertised there? Massage parlors? Other lawbreakers? Betcha they have.

And I bet Google hasn’t hacked anybody’s phones. Or committed perjury before British inquiries related to those phone hackings, like James Murdoch and British elements of the News Corp. empire have. Oops.

If the FCC doesn’t like Republican efforts to constrain their freedom of action on spectrum, it’s their own fault for creating that mistrust that now exist. Nobody believes Julius Genachowski has any intent to obey the law. He thinks he’s above the law.

Again, thanks to all at RS for being on top of this issue. May this abomination stay dead and buried for all time.

Now that the National Space-Based Positioning Navigation and Timing Committee has knifed LightSquared here’s to them twisting it as hard as they can.

Calls, emails, primary threats . . . this crap sandwich needed deep-sixing.

    There shouldn’t be a “Hollywood’s favorite Republican”.

This bill was a perfect example of what Congress
should NOT be doing. Giving the “Justice” Dept
more control of anything would be malpractice.
Obama and his bots have clearly shown their
desire to silence any with opposing views and
can never be trusted with an avenue to censorship.
They are already brainwashing kids with revisionist
history and praise of marxist “principles”. Listening
to 8 year olds sing about “income inequality”,
Che Guevara and solar panels is truly chilling.
Newsflash to Congress: there is NO way to stop
piracy in foreign countries any more than there is
a way to stop spam. I’d be happy if the government could stop China from stealing US
technology. However, just to do business there,
they are giving it away. Check out GE’s Chinese
deals to be totally disgusted. SOPA is an open
road to censorship and malevolence. Always be
mindful of the dangers of unelected bureaucrats
    controlling life with no accountability.

Thanks RS and Neil for this update. It’s obvious that the only way to get the House and it’s more mushy members to fall in line, is with the threat of a primary challenge. I would worry however, that once the elections are over, they will feel free to vote for a version of SOPA, safe in the knowledge that they have 2 more years.
    We must remain vigilant.

expect from the sponsers of the bill when we call.them? My rep just said that iwas in committe markup, but gave had no dates for when a vote would be taken.

This isn’t Committee leadership killing it. This is House leadership saying it.

Neil, this is completely OT but I keep getting this error when trying to create a new diary:

“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

Why is this so and how does one obtain “sufficient permissions” to create a diary? Been a long time registered member but just recently started commenting. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Make no mistake…..your work on this column helped kill it. Great work.

Smith, and anyone legsilator supporting this garbage, still need to get primaried yesterday.

I read the Hill site. – SOPA is not dead, it?s been ?shelved? and won?t return ?until a consensus is reached.?

Protect IP (PIPA), the Senate version of the House bill, is still very much alive, and has not even been shelved, much less killed. It is equally as bad of an idea as SOPA, even if most protests are being directed at SOPA recently.

As far as I can tell from searching, Wikipedia, Mozilla, WordPress and Reddit are joining the protest starting tomorrow. They are just some of the bigger sites and there are many others.

I thot it was interesting that Cantor is speaking for the House, instead of Boehner.

This site has good info and a link to updated sites/networks that are also joining the protest.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

SOPA is the House version of PROTECT IP + some other bill criminalizing infringing streaming.

And guess what? To become law, the House *and* Senate have to pass the bill.

So yeah, I’ll leave stupid lefty protesting to stupid leftys.

  • earlgrey

today, I was wondering what it was.

I thought they just mis-spelled Pippa Middleton’s name.

  • asap100

I wouldn’t of known about SOPA if it wasn’t for leftest protesting .But I will thank the right for telling their reps that if they vote for this , they will get primaried .

This might be one of the rare issues on which right and leftest people agree .

I wasn’t aware that the websites I mentioned were lefty sites and don’t understand why you would think so. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I read RightScoop, I would not have known too much about this legislation.

I thought protesting, emailing/calling/faxing Congress & the White House was not only a Citizen’s right, but their duty.

Protesting against those in Congress that want to take our freedoms are a #1 priority in my opinion.

As for the House “and” Senate needing to pass the bill is the way it’s supposed to be. What makes you think this won’t work out the same way the Cut/Cap/Balance did?

I think you put too much trust in Eric Cantor’s “word”, or perhaps some think the House & Senate will reach a consensus and the bill won’t take “too” many of our freedoms, just a few.

I thought that Redstate would be in agreement with the protests against another assault on our few remaining freedoms. Especially in view of the fine Tech at Night articles.

Sign me, greatly disappointed in your response.

I was talking about PROTECT IP in May, when they were still pushing Net Neutrality.

    They’re worthless.
