So Much for Unity! USA Today: White People Killed MLK Jr.

I’m old enough to remember when Martin Luther King Jr. Day was a time where we remembered a great man and the sacrifices he and others like him made to see the end of institutional racism in America and in Americans themselves. MLK wasn’t just a hero or icon for the Black community, but for all Americans.

Today, in 2017, we get “Whites killed MLK” in USA Today.

This is no way to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of judging people for the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

Accusing all white people of being responsible for MLK’s death flies in the face of what the Reverend Doctor preached. Do we still have a long way to go? Absolutely. But publishing articles accusing an entire race for something James Earl Ray did does nothing to bring us together. It’s a huge step back toward dividing Americans along racial lines and setting the marker back at “you will be judged based on your race, not for who you are.”

That’s not who MLK wanted us to be and putting up articles of this nature on the day we set aside to honor him is shameful, but sadly unsurprising.
