Twitter’s funniest judge, Don Willett, had some serious ‘splaining to do at his confirmation hearing Wednesday.

Willett, known for his jokes and memes on Twitter, made the mistake of joking about his desire to marry bacon — I mean, who doesn’t want to do that? — the day after the Supreme Court decision on Obergefell v. Hodges, which made same-sex legal across the country.

Leahy took the tweet as some kind of opposition to the ruling and attempted to get Willett to admit he disagreed with the decision. Willett was then forced to explain to the Democratic senator what humor is.

“Senator, as for the bacon tweet, that was the day after the Obergefell decision was issued and it was my attempt to inject a bit of levity,” Willett said. “The country was filled with rancor and polarization. It was a divisive time in the nation.”

“And you think that cut back the divisiveness with a comment like that?” Leahy asked.

“Senator, I believe every American is entitled to equal worth and dignity,” Willett said. “I’ve never intended to disparage anyone and would never do so. That’s not where my heart is.”

Watch the bizarre line of questioning Willett was forced to answer:

Someday, when our children ask who killed humor and comedy we can just play this clip for them.
