Unaccountable and Unacceptable: Fast and Furious and the Incompetent Administration

Today, Obama’s top lawyer takes the stand. But in the eyes of the American people, Attorney General Eric Holder has already been found guilty.

Holder is testifying before Congress about his role in Operation Fast and Furious— the failed federal gun-trafficking sting that resulted in the death of a border patrol agent and the loss of more than 1,400 weapons to Mexican drug cartels.

When he testified on the scandal last month, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley pointedly asked, “Who will be held accountable?”

If Holder has his way, no one.

It’s all terribly symptomatic of the outrageous bureaucratic incompetence plaguing the Obama administration.

Time and again, a department embroils itself in a reckless scandal, feigns ignorance, and denies culpability. When the facts suggest otherwise, they refuse to hold anyone accountable—despite the chorus of demands for resignations

Today, it’s Holder in the hot seat. When the Fast and Furious scandal came to light, he unsurprisingly denied any knowledge or wrongdoing. While the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms—the agency responsible for the botched operation—is part of the Justice Department he oversees, he pled ignorance.

But old memos and emails proved he knew much more than he let on. So when the Attorney General finally relented and complied with a Congressional subpoena last month, he faced an appropriately harsh grilling.

To recap: Over 2,000 guns were knowingly sold to straw purchasers with the plan of being traced to Mexican drug cartels. When that scheme failed, over 1,400 guns were lost.  More than 500 weapons have been recovered so far in the United States and in Mexico. Worse still, trafficked guns were later involved in the death of a border agent.

And yet, where’s the accountability? Where’s the outrage? The Justice Department carelessly empowered Mexican drug cartels and Holder still has his job.

Yet he’s not the first secretary seemingly unashamed of his managerial malpractice.

Before Holder, there was Chu—Steven Chu, Obama’s Energy Secretary. His scandal: Solyndra. When the stimulus-backed solar energy company went bankrupt, it took 1,100 jobs and half a billion dollars in taxpayer money down with it. Did anyone in the Energy Department take responsibility for a loan program gone so dreadfully wrong? Did any official admit that spending taxpayer money for political favors was gross mismanagement?  Not a one.

And then there’s Timothy Geithner, Secretary of the Treasury. Last April, he predicted in no uncertain terms that there was “no risk” of a U.S. credit downgrade. Then in August, after the President failed to lead on deficit reduction, Standard and Poor’s announced the downgrade of the national credit rating from AAA to AA+.

I immediately called for Geithner’s resignation saying, “The Treasury Department is no place for such irresponsible stewardship.” I was hardly alone in recognizing that Geithner needed to go; numerous congressional leaders agreed. And yet, there was no accountability from the administration.

It’s only a matter of time before another Obama official reveals his or her incompetence. And, we can be sure, no one will take responsibility. They’ll spin a trademark web of deception to cover up their negligence.

In recent days, President Obama has attempted to cloak himself in the mantles of former presidents. On Tuesday, he made a campaign stop in Kansas to channel Teddy Roosevelt. While there, he invoked Dwight Eisenhower.

He would do well, though, to echo Harry Truman. On his desk in the Oval Office, President Truman placed a sign. “The Buck Stops Here,” it read.  President Obama has no such sign, but the mantra should apply equally: ultimate responsibility for each and every one his administration’s failures—and they are many—rests with him.

The leadership deficit in the Obama administration begins with the man who put the team together. Incompetence starts at the top. If no one is held accountable for his team’s many missteps, voters will undoubtedly make sure the buck stops where it’s supposed to.   If Obama won’t fire Geithner, Chu, and Holder, we will. We’ll fire the whole team—in just 11 months.

To say someone is “incompetent” is to say that they are incapable of performing the duties of their job. Certainly that is demonstrably true of almost everybody in the Obama administration, from Obama on down.

But it is too easy in these situations simply to fault Holder and Chu for “incompetence.” In each of these scandals these footpads have been in service of an agenda. In Chu’s case, the agenda was promotion of “green energy”. In Holder’s it has been that of expanded gun control. And no, heads will not roll for the simple reason that people have been doing what they’ve been told to do.

That said, normal politicians would roll some heads if only for the sake of appearances and to deflect the criticisms. These folks won’t do that either. Hubris is part of it, but also their outlook: they are the best and the brightest, not accustomed to being challenged or having to account to anybody. Remember, Holder skated on his handling of the Marc Rich business. Obama seemingly has never been told “no” in his life. Believe me, people see the arrogance and overweaning pride, and that is the real issue here. Plus dishonesty, of course.

With the help of the mainstream media, the scandals will be dropped down the memory hole…..

Please , please , please, help the Republicans hold the line and hold the Dems accountable for these actions and prove once and for all that the ends do NOT justify the means and just because you intend something good, does not make the wrong right.

Please produce weekly reminders of these incidents throughout the 2012 campaign season. The American public needs to hear, over and over and over, how deeply corrupt and incompetent their Democratic party overlords truly are.

government should be SMALL. The corruption inherent in the system only grows with the size of government. Progressives either don’t care or don’t believe that they are as corrupt as the next guy. It’s a disgrace.

But the rest of us would do well if he did so and said bye-bye…

The absolute lack of accountability on display:
Is it the nerf generation of no one’s a loser bearing fruit?
Or is it pure incompetence and corruption?

I am well aware that as a Republican, you are not necessarily a Conservative.

I am asking you to switch over to the Conservative side during this pre-election period and push for a Conservative candidate. Whoever is the nominee MUST be a Conservative and a Conservative to the middle of their soul and be able to push the big zero into the ground with arguments based on his record. With his record, it shouldn’t be that difficult to do.

If you don’t help us get a Conservative, as described above, on the ballot, I hope you realize there won’t be a second party, namely the Republican Party, because our Communist Leader won’t allow it. It’s time to sit down and seriously think about our nation’s future–is she going to survive…or is she going down in flames? You have a HUGH responsibility to do all you can to LEAD her to the path of survival.

Us Conservatives are willing to keep her afloat and we need your help. Think Conservative, at least during this pre-election period. You, and all Republicans, are being watched and your actions will be remembered in future elections.

Congressman Issa is a very tough guy and he looks to be all in on this investigation. Holder (and Obama–no way would Holder do this without POTUS approval) allegedly went into this insane and poorly planned operation with a deeper nefarious motive–to tighten gun purchase rules for law-abiding US citizens and further erode our Second Amendment rights–and it went horribly wrong. Holder and Obama are responsible for the death of Agent Terry and hundreds of Mexican citizens. At the bare minimum, it was reckless endangerment, criminal negligence and conspiracy and it should certainly result in prison time for Holder and an impeachment for Obama. Partisan politics don’t factor into a situation where there is such obvious criminal behavior. Obama should be taken from the White House in handcuffs for his role in this–impeachment isn’t nearly enough for the gravity of these crimes. It’s outrageous that Holder has brazenly lied under oath to Congress in order to cover his hind end and to protect the Chicago messiah. If they did this for the stated purpose and it backfired due to their total incompetence (which has been repeatedly demonstrated over the last three years) it would be bad enough, BUT they did this to try to further restrict the Constitutional rights of American citizens. I used to believe that Obama was simply incompetent and unprepared for the job and that Holder was another one of his totally clueless stooges, but as more of this scandal (and others) continues to come to light, their evil motives become more and more apparent. In a perfect world there would be prison time for Holder and Obama. In what America has become since Obama took office; the probability of justice for Agent Terry and 200+ innocent people is much less certain. I hope and pray that Representative Issa goes after both of them with everything he has and I support him 100% in his quest for justice in this horrific abuse of power. The American people have had all they are going to tolerate from this corrupt administration and there is a reckoning coming that won’t be as simple as voting them out of office on November 6, 2012. The victims deserve justice for what Holder and Obama have done and I pray that Representative Issa is able to give it to them.

In all of the scandals you noted and the fallout from them would suggest otherwise. Instead I would call this administration calculating. So why do they keep on flaunting law and take for granted the public apathy? Blaming the media alone is too easy of an answer even if it is part of it.
I agree that these scandals should be brought up during the campaign as maybe a 30 second infomercial. Obama promised a transparent administration. Show just how transparent it really isn’t.
By the way it is said that if a man does not stand for something he will fall for anything. Take a chance and show what the Republican Party stands for. I really can’t stand RINO’s or Republicrats. I am tired of deals with budgets that are merely accounting tricks. If the House keeps up compromising what was promised in 2010 then Obama will surely win as your base will become apathetic while liberals paint you any color they want.

He has no fear and will use the full authority available to bring justice to those who lost their lives as well as the Americans who are watching the most corrupt administration to ever represent the executive branch abuse their power and use it against us every day.

    God help Issa.

    Reince -

You need to make sure that 100% of republicans realize that
    1) DOJ ordered ATF to let welfare recipients and felons pay cash for guns that were not followed or retrieved until they showed up at crime scenes in Mexico and US
    2) Brian Terry died – two guns sold under program (ATF had serial nrs) found at crime scene and FBI ‘disappeared” a third weapon to protect a CI
    3) ATF advised gun dealers to stock up in anticipation of sales
    4) Gun dealers complained and wanted assurances – which were given by US Attorney and his assistant – Burke and Hurley
    5) Weinstein knew about gun walking when he wrote memo to Grassley
    6) His boss Breuer congratulated him on his letter but now claims he never read it although he transferred from office e-mail to personal e-mail four drafts, including final
    7) DOJ (Tracy Schmaler) concocted “ATF botched sting gone awry” and “Trace failed to lead to kingpins” – No sting, nothing botched, no kingpins – ATF used stimulus money to add agents in Mexico to retrieve guns found at crime scenes! Involuntary Manslaughter

No excuse for any Congressman (including Dems) not to support Holder’s resignation or impeachment
