Don’t Immanentize the Eschaton.
– William F. Buckley (HT: Culturewars.com)
A lot of people think Barack Obama has pretty much performed a shameful act of biotic reproduction with the poodle when it comes to his reelection bid. The logical reasoning goes as follows:
A) Barack Obama has failed to solve our economic crisis.
B) People are sick and tired of hearing him whine about “This mess we inherited.”
C) This means Former Governor Palin can relax with bus tour. We could win the White House running her pet Yeti and save all the expense of holding a primary season.
I make it as far as step B with no great desire to dispute the logic and reasoning. I’m not even getting close to step C unless the pet Yeti has a lower unfavorable rating than the former Governor of Alaska. After watching the GOP hand the Democrats a Congressional Seat in NY-26 this week, I’m upgrading my odds on Barack Obama’s 2nd Term. They were at 60%. I now have him at 80%.
But RMJ, the guy sucks as a president. He’s not creating jobs, his healthcare plan is a homesick abortion, and when he can figure out why he’s currently bombing Libya, it would be darn chipper of him to politely inform the rest of us. Logic dictates the James Earl Carter had a much higher chance of beating Ronald Reagan.
And that last sentence is where the argument against the impending 2nd term for Barack I fails. Logic dictates nothing to America’s first Postmodern President. He has mastered the art of deconstructing logic and replacing it with Political Gnosticism. Anyone standing there butt-to-flank with their fellow zombies and chanting “Yes We Can!” has succumbed to faith-based politics.
Obama sells “Hope and Change.” He is a master of the empty, meaningless symbol. He has so successfully punched each person’s hot-buttons that nothing he says has to be grounded in logic. He just has to hit the correct pitch and rhythm. If he can sell 51% of the voters the opportunity to avoid being racist like those other people, he nearly becomes unstoppable. The camera rolls and the journalist stands prepared to cast shame and opprobrium on anyone who speaks evil of Barack I.
What we need to implant firmly in the public mind is this. Voting for Barack Obama does not represent voting against racism. It doesn’t end the scourge of racism any more than making Kimbo Slice the CEO of Krispy Crème Doughnuts somehow lets us all pretend blacks weren’t imported here from Africa and sold to perform slave labor on large, agrarian plantations. There is no escaping the sad and brutal episodes of American History.
There is the possibility of making a conscious decision not to let that history ruin your present or allow dishonest politicians to turn off your intellect. There is the possibility of us pointedly and repeatedly reminding President Obama, and all of his enstupidated followers, that a nation staring at 9% unemployment and a $25Tr budget deficit in ten years needs a little bit of economic leadership. We could tell the president and his evangelized, deracinated flock that screaming “Paul Ryan is a poopy-head!” is not a viable response to the fact that Medicare will be bankrupt like a Donald Trump investment strategy by 2024.
This needs to get out there. The results from NY-26 show us that the message “Paul Ryan’s Dad was a Nazgul” + “Mediscare! Mediscare! The GOP will cancel your Medicare!” currently gives the Dems a shot in Congressional districts that are +6 GOP in partisan composition. Compared to His Royal Disingenuousness, Barack I the Republicans are magnificently right on every major issue of the day headed into election 2012. We are also about to get our butts kicked in the same, repetitive, predictable fashion that the Washington Redskins do every year when they travel to the Meadowlands to take on the Giants.
The GOP is back where we were in William F. Buckley’s heyday. We are standing athwart an evil history, desperately yelling “Stop!” No matter how logical and accurate an observation it may be, nobody really wants to be informed that they won’t be going to heaven without having to die first.
That precise lie is what Barack Obama, the Political Gnostic, promises them. Can we get something for nothing? “Yes.We.Can!” As long as people still believe that fallacy, Barack Obama is almost a shoo-in for his 2nd term. God save our American Republic.

buddha1556 Friday, May 27th at 11:57AM EDT (link)whether to laugh or cry after reading (and fully agreeing with) this. I wouldn’t take issue with so many walking off a cliff if I wasn’t forcibly tethered to them.
I just wonder how long the media can keep this up.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 11:57AM EDT (link)Normally, the middle of the electorate only cares about money. (middle being those 20% not committed to one side or the other)
Accordingly when the economy sucks, the incumbent doesn’t stand a chance and when its booming the incumbent is unbeatable.
It seems to me that the only possible difference this time around is that the media is going to unprecedented lengths to convince people that the economy does not suck. I just wonder if they can keep it up for another 17 months.

Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 12:01PM EDT (link)you have a valid point. People may well stop “feeling good” about reelecting Barack I if their tummies rumble too loudly.

What changes do you see?
acat (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 1:59PM EDT (link)Seriously. What can Obama do, without pissing on the base and risking suppressing turnout on his side, to turn the economy?
Reduce government red tape? Doubtful, AFCSME is behind him all the way.
Provide some stability in the tax code, allowing investors to jump back in? Not his style thus far, he wants the government, not the market to pick the winners.
Stimulus 2.0 (or whatever number we’re on) ? Not without rolling the GOP in the House over the debt ceiling/budget .. this is actually the most likely, but .. stimupalooza circa 2008/2009 and the idea that our great grandkids will be paying for a high speed rail line to nowhere is what spawned the Tea Parties…
Further, the only segment of the housing market that’s moving right now are foreclosures. This puts a major damper on the mobility of the workforce – fewer people can pack up and move to Texas following jobs without dumping their houses, and nothing’s moving .. at least in the Chicago market.
Looking at the other side of this, I don’t see the “welfare states” (more accurately, the debtor states of Illinois, New York, and California – all Dem strongholds) turning their economies around, and I expect pressure to increase on Obama to bail them out… which he hopefully won’t be able to do.
We’re not necessarily going to double-dip, but if energy costs don’t stabilize (and that’s highly dependent on the Middle East stabilizing .. which ain’t happening) we’re going to be in for some stagflation.

$xxx Million of the stimulus dollars went to fraud artists and tax cheats.

The current economy has been normalized
Kyle-MI (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 12:25PM EDT (link)It certainly isn’t getting better despite what the propaganda arm of the Democrat party (a.k.a. the MSM) has been pushing. On the other hand, it hasn’t been getting worse, yet. It has sort of bottomed out and stayed at the bottom. People are nervous, but they have not been loosing jobs. Without criticism from the MSM (and with its support), the current rate of unemployment has become the new normal. People are starting to get use to it and become more comfortable with it.
I'm afraid you may be correct.
uselogic Friday, May 27th at 3:06PM EDT (link)The drumbeat, day after day, in the MSM is…. “This is the new normal. America is in decline; get used to it.” It is numbing. I hear and see its effects on my non-politically engaged friends and family. We will have to be especially good this time or the a$$clown wil get reelected.
And of course, it’ll be Bush’s fault.
Kyle8, it's called acclimation.
lineholder (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 3:38PM EDT (link)Acclimation is a scientific theory supporting the manner in which organisms adapt to changes in their environment. Acclimation is also a psychological premise for behavior modification theories. It’s the “frog-in-the-pot” syndrome.
A lowering of our economic living standards is only one of the things we’re becoming acclimated to in our society. Another example would be rule of man over the rule of law.
I could go on and on about this subject all day, so I’ll try to stay off my bandwagon here. The point is that there are many instances in which organisms adapt to the changes in their environment in such a way that it promotes self-preservation, self-reliance, and ability to survive, despite those changes.
We are human beings, not lower organisms. Human beings can consciously choose how we respond to the changes in our societal environment, so the acclimation efforts that may be made to lead a society of people in the direction of specific pre-determined desired outcomes defined by certain sectors of that society don’t always succeed. It can backfire in a very potent way.
That’s what we need to do here…we need to make the kind of choices where this backfires.
It sounds complicated, but it really isn’t. And it is truly fascinating subject.

I think that the "No one can BHO in 2012"
steve010 (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 12:19PM EDT (link)is a really bad strategy on the part of the left and the MSM. If the guy is unbeatable then the enthusiasm that he needs to bring the same voters out to the polls is diminished even more.
How many people bet on the Jets in Super Bowl III? Baltimore was favored by 22 points. The first time voters that came out in 2008 will listen to this strategy argument and just say to themselves, well I guess he doesn’t need my vote, why bother. That is a sure losing formula in the states the (R)’s need to turn.
If that's what the Left Is Doing...
Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 12:24PM EDT (link)I’ll put his reelection odds right back down to the historical precedent of 0.60. I think he Left has gotten very organized and highly motivated. The “Paul Ryan wants to push Gramm-ma-ma down the Odessa Steps” meme is being pushed daily. We need to push back w/ “She can’t collect Medicare from a bankrupt program” response with both barrels. If we don’t we won’t even realize the extent to which we are burnt toast until it’s too late.

My wife is a medical professional
steve010 (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 12:34PM EDT (link)she has worked in skilled nursing facilities for almost 3 decades. We were having this discussion the other day about Medicare. She didn’t know that everyone has to have Medicare as their insurance when they turn 65. When I told her that there is no choice even if a person has millions, she was flabbergasted. If she and her co-workers don’t know how Medicare actually works, then we are in trouble.
Obama is not unbeatable
jaykali (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 1:11PM EDT (link)And with all the hand wringing going on ab Republican candidates, I think it will be okay. We will elect someone competent. We’re not going to run an idiot out there. The democrats have to run on personal attacks, mediscare, ‘hope/change’, ‘win the future with hover cars’ bull-crap and I think credibility is lost. Obama doesnt have the sex appeal he had before, period. People can say all they want that ‘he still has it’ but the fact is he ran on hope last time and he has to run on reality this time which doesnt look as good quite frankly.
They are going to lie ab medicare but i think shining light on it just shows that a) they have no plan and b) its not as bad as ppl think. This is different than obamacare which was built on smoke and mirrors and looks worse and worse as you get into the details.
Chins up people, we’ve got a chance.

Conversely, anyone the LSM/pundits tell me is unelectable, ‘has to many negatives’, or the best one ‘isn’t a serious candidate’ becomes much more attractive to me. My dream ticket at this very moment of anyone I could choose is Palin/Cain. My pick of who is out there now is Cain/????
I may not agree with what you say but I’ll defend your right to say it to the very death.

The economy is going to get worst and the Democrats and the MSM are going to blame the Republicans
vinnster2 Friday, May 27th at 1:56PM EDT (link)I am sorry to say that is what is going to happen. The dip that is coming is unavoidable. Obama, Democrats, and the MSM will blame the delay in raising the Debt ceiling (I have little faith in Reps holding their ground), or that Reps did not pass a budget that Obama wanted. Or the Reps cutting spending on (pick one)…
The economy is going to get worse and regardless what the truth is, it will get blamed on the Reps and Obama will win.
I hate the thought of it, but it seems obvious at this point.
John Galt is alive and well.
Not A Foregone Truth
Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 2:00PM EDT (link)The GOP just has to hit back.
1) Raising the debt ceiling for someone with a budget plan that will give us a $25Tr debt in ten years is like handing a flask of Everclear and the Car Keys to pack of teenage boys.
2) You can’t legitimately criticize Ryan if you have zee-row plan yourselves.
3) The US Sen has not passed a budget for 750 days and counting….
bring all of this out and the Dems have the ball smacked right back across the net at them. It’s doable, we just need to start doing so early. Don’t let a meme take hold uncontradicted.

acat, I also think we should consider
lineholder (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 2:27PM EDT (link)getting strong local networks up and running. One of the agendas set forth in the G8 meeting addresses greater regulation over the internet. This could become an international effort to “stabilize media forces” relatively soon. Combine this with some of Neil’s posts about moves being made by the FCC…it does look like we’re moving in the direction of censorship via regulation.
It is possible that the Dems are hoping this might leave both Repubs and Conservatives in a sad state of affairs between now and Nov. 2012. Perhaps they are hoping this will depress the base of voters and prevent us from GOTV efforts. This may or may not be true, but all things considered, I wouldn’t put it past them. and would rather have a plan in mind dealing with the worst case scenario rather than have it suddenly upon us with no options at all.
Either local networks or other creative options…anything that will let us communicate with each other through to the election.

There was no, literally no, right of center media at all, whatsoever.
And voter affiliation was over 50% Democrat, and less than 1/3 Republican.
So don’t go saying how bad things look and how there is no way we can beat Obama, He is very beatable.
Will it be a cakewalk? Hell no, it never is. But all it will take is a decent candidate and some people in the party who are willing to bring to fight to Obama.

I don't understand...
swvapatriot (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 9:18PM EDT (link)why I have only seen two mentions anywhere that it was flat out dirty politics that cost the NY election. For crying out loud folks, there was a false Tea Party, Demon-crat candidate that pulled 9% of the vote. Had this sleaze-ball not been there, it would have been a 3% Rebublican victory.
Instead, ignoring this fact, all of a sudden many are wring their hands and crying, “All is lost!” What a crock! There are more of us than there are of them, as the 2010 elections abundantly proved.
No army has ever won when the troops hunkered down and told each other they would all be killed. How about rolling up our sleeves,
getting busy with anything and everything it takes to make it work, and never accepting the possibility of defeat.
We must think like the Marine general, who, when told his division was completely surrounded by the communist armies said something like, “Good, we’ve got them right where we want them, now they can’t get away.” Or better, Churchill who said, “Never, never surrender.”
