Nobody Is Better Off Without ‘Em

Why The South Really Should Rise Again

The National Institute for Literacy estimates that 47 percent of adults in the City of Detroit are functionally illiterate, with staggering rates recorded in some of the suburbs as well: Southfield at 24 percent, Warren at 17 percent and both Inkster and Pontiac at 34 percent illiterate.

(HT: Detroit Regional Workforce Fund)

I was just kidding with the provocative subtitle. The South should not rise again. It’s hot down here in August and getting up would require me to expend effort while putting down my ice-cold mint julep. I blog these things because I’m Conservative, mean, and…a Southerner. This is completely and totally different from the kind, noble and enlightened reasons that inspire people such as Thomas Geoghegan to write in the Wall Street Journal that Boeing’s decision to move work to a plant in Charleston, SC was a threat to American enterprise.

The noble and learned Toothless Tuesday Canon recently grew still larger in both volume and perspicacity. Better Off Without ‘Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession is Chuck Thompson’s kindly and avuncular attempt to explain to all us folks down Huntsville Way that ain’t done none of that-thar book-larnin’ why we should just take our hookworm-ridden feet and hit the highway. His love song to the land of magnolia trees and kudzu begins as follows. He poses the following quandary which I can only assume is rhetorical.

On the first page, the author wonders why the American electoral system must be “held hostage by a coalition of bought-and-paid-for political swamp scum from the most uneducated, morbidly obese, racist, morally indigent, xenophobic, socially stunted, and generally ass-backwards part of the country.”

Well shuuux, that’s a tough one, Chuckles. I’d consult Congressman Conyers from Detroit. Once he’s done talking you through that famous “Good and Welfare Clause” you can find right there in the US Constitution, I’m certain it will be as clear to you as a typical sample of Vice President Joe Biden’s verbal diarrhea.

Perhaps we don’t measure up to the ethical standards of Robert Torricelli or Jon Corzine. Maybe it’s our failure to show the fiscal wisdom of the State of Rhode Island. Or for that matter, our charitable giving doesn’t even compare to the New England Region as a whole as you can see on the chart below.

American Chrity By State As A Percentage of Individual Income

But we can’t secede. These Northerners in The Mist such as Thomas Geoghegan and Chuck Thompson are just too much fun to feed an occasional grub. So we’ll be nice and recognize that all 57 states are in this together. It would be unpatriotic to abandon our proud American brethren up in Oiho.

Thus, just because we care, we’ll continue working hard to make sure The South isn’t indicative of a decline in American Enterprise. As J.E Dyer patiently explains, the State of South Carolina will continue production in all of the following industries plus several more.

South Carolina also has a BMW plant, a Honda plant, a Bosch plant, a Caterpillar plant, an American LaFrance plant (fire engines and ambulances), and a Daimler plant, all employing highly-skilled labor to manufacture big, intricate stuff that has to work. That’s in addition to the Milliken, BASF, GE, Core, Bose, BP, DAK, DuPont, Eastman, Mitsubishi, Albemarle, MeadWestvaco, PhilChem, Roche, Mount Vernon Mills, Invista, Metromont, Johns Manville, Alcoa, Kimberly-Clark, Shaw, Jarrett, Mohawk, Anderson, AccuTrex, Sonoco, and Cox Industries plants..

The South will rise again. But it won’t happen through violence (such as what we see daily in Chicago) or stupidity Chuck Thompson, bless his heart, needs to be more charitable. The nut-job in Texas needs to stand down and perhaps finish off my julep for me so he can relax.

We are one people in the United States. We are one people whether we particularly like one another or not. When the South rises again, it will be a rising tide that lifts all boats. God bless America. God bless each and every part of America. Unity. That is all.

No way is it that low.

Now, the smart immigrants leave the city as soon as possible, but I can see enough arabs, indians, slavs, and chaldeans sticking around to bring literacy above 50%.

…educated at the Univ. of South Carolina who has lived and worked in SC, AR, and TN I wouldn’t mind secession if it allowed us to control our borders to keep the damn Blue staters out and eating out our states like they’ve done to the Blue states they’re fleeing from.

The double-edged sword of conservative governance is that our states attract businesses who then recruit workers from across the country many of whom are from Blue states who can’t seem to connect the dots between Democrat governance and the poor fiscal situation in their states.

Just look at NC for example. Once solidly Red it went fr Obama in 2008 because of the influx of non-Southerners drawn to NC by the dramatic growth of Charlotte and the Research Triangle area of the state. Would NC vote for Jesse Helms today? No.

Even TX is slowly becoming less solidly Red due to in-migrations of moronic Californians.

Secession, although unrealistic, woud at least keep the socialists out. There doesn’t seem to be any other way to keep them from voting other than denying them entry in the first place.

And the people up North should get on their knees and thank God for the South because if not for us this country would already be a European style welfare state. We’re the ones keeping disaster at bay.

-and then move there as soon as they are ready to retire from places like Fairfax or The Oranges. It’s hilarious.

And Alabama is foolish enough to encourage them by not taxing pension income.

I live in Bella Vista, AR which has a large number of northern retirees. We’re trying to get a Walmart Neighborhood Market built here and the lady who owns the property recently successfully had her property rezoned to commercial so WM coud build the store there.

Well a bunch of granola crunching retirees successfully forced the zoning issue on the Nov ballot.

I’m sure the decision will be upheld but it never should have been challenged in the first place. The property OWNER petitioned the city council to have HER property rezoned for the new store and they agreed.

The retired hippies don’t like WM so threw a fit. I wish they’d all just leave.

once they move to Dixie. They used to adopt our ways, with NC being the prime example of a recent change. Yes, they now can’t connect the dots it seems.

……Well, if the North really wants us to seceed, why not humor them? Unlike the last time, they’re at least willing to let us go peacefully :) .

and require that they pass some constitutional amendments to get back in…

Question 1) Someone has broken into your house at night. What do you do?

Question 2) Name the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution.

      Question 3) Define ‘tolerance’

Question 4) What does ‘freedom of religion’ mean to you?

it almost sounds as if your mood parallels my own today. You’re a fellow Southerner so you’ll understand what I mean in using the phrase “sick and tired of being sick and tired of…”, correct?

The “book larners” have been using classic conditioning (think Pavlov’s dog) for years now to get various sectors of our society to conform to their own way of thinking or their own expectations of behavior.

Lots of people seem to be hitting that “sick and tired of it” point lately.

You look beyond it, and that’s where you see so many good things life…unity, freedom, liberty. Intangible things that “dem dar book larners” don’t appreciate or respect.

It’s pretty amazing. I’m enjoying it. Hope you do the same.

    • Repair_Man_Jack

to point out that people aren’t necessarily drawn to the South. Many of them are fleeing.

  • cbartlett

    to describe those northerners!

FYI – the “secede from the union” message has been said very often in Texas for many years. (You can actually find bumper stickers promoting it in many novelty stores.) Most of the time it’s in jest but, fair warning, there are enough guns in this state to run off the Yankees and defend the borders if the rest of this country keeps falling off the cliff.

Not like those wise guys in Chicago, those Gumbah’s in Jersey, those gangbangers in Harlem, or those arabs in Dearborn.

If accent is a sign of smarts, I’d put every ‘hick’ with a Joisee or Noo Yuck accent, based on voting patterns alone. I’m a big proponent of the idea that leaders reflect their constituents.

But hey, what do I know? I’m just one of those dumb hick southerners.

  • proudmarinemom

We who live so close to the Line in Washington –once a Southern city, but no more — have always envied her. The South sends us kind winds, kind words, kind welcome. The South is like a gentle, calm hand on our shoulders.

How lucky you (y’all) are to have been born there,
