Leave it to the Babylon Bee to be the voice of reason after two nights of tumultuous Democratic presidential debates.

During the early part of Thursday night’s debate in Miami, FL, several of the candidates started talking over each other – and the moderators couldn’t get control of the situation. That’s when Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) stepped in:

It was Sen. Kamala Harris’ turn to speak as the rhetoric was flying Thursday night at the second 2020 Democratic presidential debate.

As her fellow candidates shouted around her, the former California state attorney general smiled and raised her hands.

“Hey, guys, you know what? America does not want to witness a food fight. They want to know how we’re going to put food on their table,” Harris said to raucous cheers and applause.

Her parting of the debate waters in Miami came after an exchange between former Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Eric Swalwell of California on old vs. new leadership within the Democratic Party — and other candidates had wanted in.

In the aftermath of the debate, numerous fact checks were done by mainstream media news outlets about the candidates and their claims on various issues including border security, abortion, and the Green New Deal.

The Babylon Bee, however, zeroed in on probably the most disputed claim of the night: Was Harris telling the truth when she said Americans didn’t want to see a food fight break out?

As it turns out, she was wrong:

When polled, over 90% of Americans responded to the survey, “FOOD FIGHT! FOOD FIGHT! FOOD FIGHT!”

Many said that seeing the massive food battle royale between the many candidates would bring them much more joy than Kamala Harris putting food on their table.

In fact, it is also false that Americans want Kamala Harris putting food on their table at all.

Again, a vast majority of those surveyed responded that they were happy to put their own food on their own table, thank you very much, despite the detailed report from the Harris campaign that outlines a delicious “gruel cube” delivered weekly to every home [for] American families to gnaw on for seven days, providing all the needed nutrients, vitamins, and energy with much less waste.

I think in Politifact terms, Harris’s claim would come pretty close to being classified as a “pants on fire” lie.

Because of course most Americans wanted to see a food fight last night. Amirite?

In all seriousness, props to the Bee for catching something a lot of us didn’t: That Harris said “They want to know how we’re going to put food on their table” as if it’s the government’s responsibility to provide for all Americans.
