As I’ve said before, I don’t know how much Joe Biden’s campaign is paying their sign language interpreters, but my guess is that they’re not compensating them nearly enough for the Herculean effort it takes to keep up with the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee when he goes off-script and/or starts rambling.
The latest instance of a sign language interpreter giving it their all for the Biden campaign was during a recent campaign swing through Pennsylvania. As my colleague Bonchie reported Friday, Biden invented a new word – “trunalimunumaprzure” – which, as of this writing, not one person, not even anyone on his team, not Biden himself, has been able to translate.
At the time, the only video circulating was of Biden alone making the comments during his speech. But another video has surfaced in the last couple of days showing the sign language interpreter’s reaction to the word. It was something else, to say the least.

As my colleague Nick Arama reported the next day, Biden invented another word – “badakathcare” – while on a campaign stop in Michigan. We don’t have video of the sign language interpreter trying to figure out what Biden said in that instance, but we’ll certainly be on the lookout for it.
The Pennsylvania speech isn’t the first one where a sign language interpreter for Biden was caught on camera having problems making heads or tails of his prepared remarks.
During a virtual event in September, Biden was saying something about “environmental justice” but the message got lost in the translation big time – not just from listening to whatever it was Biden was trying to say but also from watching the interpreter’s gestures.

As I said before, his sign language interpreters should be getting paid top dollar for their work. In the event he wins the election, my money’s on the Biden campaign creating an official “Office of the Sign Language Interpreter for the President of the United States”, because they’re really, really going to need it.
